Everything is fine until a man over the intercom says they only have an hour left of flight. A man sitting a few rows in front of her gets up. She has no interest in the man until he stops in beside her chair. ‘’Evie Blanchet?’’ He stares at her in shock. ‘’And you are?’’ ‘’We met this afternoon.’’ Realisation dawns on Evie as she remembers the man named Liam from the Louvre Museum. She undoes her seat belt and gets up. She realises they are almost the same height. ‘’This can’t be happening.’’ She chuckles bitterly. ‘’I can’t believe it.’’ ‘’I guess it must be fate.’’ ‘’I don’t believe in things like fate,’’ she says. ‘’Then what do you believe in?’’ Evie doesn’t reply. The man on the intercom comes on again, warning passengers of turbulence, but Evie is already shaken. Liam’s phone buzzes. He shows Evie the text. I see you’ve met Miss Blanchet; it reads. He asks if she’s received something similar. ‘’Aren’t you supposed to have airplane mode turned on?’’ He shrugs and asks her to check. She turns on her phone and reads the message without unlocking it. I see you’ve met Mr Blanchet 42
Evie’s hand trembles. She and Liam lock eyes. ‘’I don’t think this is normal,’’ he says. They both receive another message, at the exact same time. Now that you’ve met your partner, you’re ready to play. 2003, BOSTON Evie’s friends are waiting for her at the airport. They ask her about Paris, gushing over the sights she must have seen. Evie nods along and smiles, but remains distracted by the man named Liam Blanchet. He gave her his number and told her to send him screenshots if the strange number messages her again. She hasn’t gotten any new messages, but the most recent one burns in her mind. Now that you’ve met your partner, you’re ready to play She doesn’t understand. What game? Is Liam her partner? And how are the random texts connected to the Gardner heist? She reads more articles about art theft when her friends drive her home. Luke asks if she wants to go to the bar with them, she replies that she’s jetlagged. She knows she should probably go with them, if she doesn’t, she’ll just spend the evening reading about art robbery and going through the anonymous text messages. She politely refuses anyway. Her small apartment is silent apart from the sound of her keyboard. She reads about art theft. In 1994, Edvard Munch’s ‘’The Scream’’ was stolen. Recovered three months later.
