LORD
MAYOR’S
MESSAGE
CR BOB
DWYER
I’d also like to thank each and every one of you
for your cooperation during this lockdown –
please continue to take care of one another
and stay safe.
If you’re eligible, I encourage you to get
vaccinated as soon as possible, in line with
the advice from NSW Health. I believe the
more people who get vaccinated against
COVID-19, the sooner life in our City can
return to normal.
Understanding
Retail in Parramatta
Roundtable
Last week, I led an online roundtable
forum with leaders in the retail industry to
better understand the opportunities and
challenges they might face when it comes to
opening and running their businesses in
Parramatta.
COVID-19 Update
A couple of weeks ago, the NSW Government
announced stricter lockdown restrictions for
the Parramatta Local Government Area (LGA).
While this is a challenging time for us all,
I am confident we will get through this and
bounce back even stronger than before. In
the meantime, please continue to follow the
latest health orders to help protect yourself,
your loved ones and our community from this
highly contagious virus.
As always, Council’s top priority remains the
safety and wellbeing of our community. With
the current mask mandate in place, Council
has partnered with the NSW Police to ensure
vulnerable people in our community are also
protected by distributing 2,000 individually
wrapped masks to those in need. I thank the
NSW Police for their support and assistance
in helping keep the City of Parramatta safe
during this difficult time.
Emerging Civic Leaders Program
A group of inspiring young people from our City recently
took part in the 2021 Emerging Civic Leaders program.
On Wednesday 28 July, I had the honour of
joining an online discussion with 13 inspiring
young people from across our City, who
have taken part in the 2021 Emerging Civic
Leaders program.
Over a six-week period in March, April and
May, the participants, who are aged between
18 and 24, received lessons in leadership
from some of Australia’s top civic leaders,
including former senator Natasha Stott
Despoja, Tim Costello AO, presenter and
academic Dr Susan Carland, and former
Commonwealth Young Person of the Year
Usman Iftikhar.
The discussion explored a range of topics
including the City’s offerings and conditions,
retail needs and aspirations, and retail trends
post COVID-19. It was an insightful meeting
that provided valuable feedback, which will
assist in shaping the future of retail in the City
of Parramatta.
Have Your Say
Council is currently inviting community
feedback on two major projects: the proposed
T-Way cycleway realignment through
Constitution Hill, and the Alfred Street
pedestrian and cyclist access upgrade in
Rosehill. The proposed T-Way cycleway
realignment aims to separate cyclists, pedestrians
and traffic, and involves the building of a new
bridge over Toongabbie Creek.
Our other major project is a proposed upgrade
to Alfred Street, which includes a separated
bike and pedestrian path on the eastern
side of Alfred Street, between Eleanor and
George Streets, as well as priority crossings
for pedestrians and cyclists at a number of
intersections.
To have your say on these major projects, visit
participate.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au
Submissions close 5pm, Tuesday 31 August.
The program included practical skill development
workshops exploring democracy and valuesled
leadership, creative problem solving, and
the power of community.
It was fantastic to talk to this impressive
group of engaged and passionate young
residents and hear about what they learnt
from the program. I look forward to seeing
where the future takes them.
With stricter lockdown restrictions in place for the City of
Parramatta, Council is partnering with the NSW Police
to help protect vulnerable members of our community.
Council is inviting community feedback on two major
projects.
LOCAL NEWS
Mayor confirms he’s out
Uncertainty surrounds Liberal Councillors ahead of upcoming election
NICOLA BARTON
parra news » Tuesday, August 10, 2021
The Liberal Party’s two City of
Parramatta North Rocks Ward
Councillors have announced
they will not recontest this year’s Local
Government Election, as factional wars
stir.
Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer and Councillor
Andrew Jefferies’ decision to call it a day
comes after Councillor Martin Zaiter
unsuccessfully took the NSW Liberal Party
to the Supreme Court, in an attempt to sue
its State Executive over a ‘mismanaged’
election nomination process.
Cr Zaiter launched the civil case against
the Liberal State Executive, which he is a
member of, after it made the decision to
not run nominations in Parramatta.
As it stands, Local Government Conferences
are held so that branch members are
able to preselect nominees for elections.
Parramatta, however, does not have one,
after members voted against its establishment.
In the case of where there is no conference,
candidates will have to run as
independents, unless the State Executive
determines to contest and thus open
nominations and endorse them under the
Liberal name.
Some party members believe it is a
breach of the constitution to remove the
preselection process and leaves the door
open for factional powerplay.
The Court rejected any evidence that
was directed to explaining that dispute
or speculating about what one faction or
another might do.
“While such things may be matters
of great and legitimate interest to the
participants and those concerned with
local government in Parramatta, they are
irrelevant to the legal issues which the
Court has been called upon to decide,” the
Court documents stated.
Following the Court outcome, the Liberal
State Executive opened nominations for
Parramatta.
A Liberal Party source said that the
party’s left and hard right factions, led
by two senior Ministers in the Berejiklian
Government had “concocted”
Current Councillor Andrew Jefferies.
Current Councillor Bob Dwyer.
and “rorted” the process to install their
preferred candidates across all five of the
City of Parramatta Council’s Wards.
Cr Jefferies said he has loved representing
the community over the last three terms,
across both The Hills and Parramatta, but
said the toxicity of the chamber is unbearable.
“For some it’s more about score settling
and bullying than genuine community
representation,” he said.
Current Councillor Benjamin Barrak.
Current Councillor Martin Zaiter.
“That certainly won’t be changing
over the course of the next term and
with the State Executive acting less than
transparently by deliberately dragging
out the nomination process till the
last minute, leaving less than a day for
candidate nominations, while excluding
local branch members from the decision
making process; it’s just not something I
wanted to be associated with.”
Cr Dwyer said it’s time for him to focus on
Current Councillor Bill Tyrrell.
Current Councillor Steven Issa.
his family and his health moving forward.
“It’s been a difficult Council term from
the start and at the end of the day it does
wear you down,” he said.
Parra News understands all remaining
Liberal Councillors have nominated,
however whether or not they will be
endorsed will be up to the State Executive
to decide.
The Local Government Election will be
held on December 4.
Hope blackspot may be fixed
NICOLA BARTON
Wentworth Point’s mobile phone
network blackspot is causing
headaches, as residents working
from home or trying to check in at
venues are often without signal.
City of Parramatta Councillor Patricia
Prociv recently put forward a Notice of
Motion, which was endorsed, calling
for the Council to write to the Chief
Executive Officers of Telstra Corporation,
Singtel Optus and TPG Community,
seeking information regarding upgrades
or construction at the suburb’s mobile
network base stations.
These include stations at 47 Hill Road
(Telstra), 6 Baywater Drive and 19 Hill
Road (TPG Community) and upgrading
the 3G network at 45 Hill Road (Optus).
The issue of slow service is nothing new
for the highly-dense suburb but has only
increased with lockdown and the number
of people switching to a work from home
model.
Wentworth Point resident and community
advocate Clement Lun said residents
and businesses are experiencing difficulties
accessing mobile networks and have
been airing their frustrations online.
“The mobile infrastructure is shocking
in our area and can’t keep up with the
growing population,” he said.
“It’s a real challenge with everyone now
at home and trying to connect all at once.”
Optus, Telstra and TPG told Parra News
that they are investigating the establishment
of additional mobile base stations in
the Wentworth Point area.
A Telstra spokesperson suggested those
experiencing poorer indoor coverage use
a network extension device.
“Customers may also be able to utilise
their fixed broadband connections in their
homes to enable our voice calling and SMS
over Wi-Fi feature on supported devices,”
the spokesperson said.
HSC exams should be postponed
The HSC is one of the most important
times in a young person’s life, but I find
the obsession with getting the exams to
happen on time during the pandemic
somewhat over the top.
The State Government has moved heaven
and earth to get these exams happening,
even redirecting vaccines from regional
New South Wales.
They should have just been postponed.
We’ve all had to deal with postponements,
cancellations and delays during
this pandemic.
Running the exams in December surely
would have been a smarter option.
Lockdown must be tougher
Parramatta is now more than six weeks
into Australia’s most ineffective lockdown
of the pandemic. New daily case
numbers average in the high 200s in NSW
– and are poised to rise further. The virus
has gained a foothold in parts of Sydney
and seeped into the Hunter. It has forced
lockdowns in other states.
A lockdown, of course, is at most an
ideal. Only so much movement can be
curbed. People still have to exercise and
shop. Our essential public services must
go on. Others have no option but to leave
the house for jobs in supermarkets, pharmacies,
factories, construction, logistics
and freight.
But we’ve also learned a few other lessons
since last year. Australians want to
do the right thing. It’s easier when governments
do right by them. By honestly
communicating the severity of the situation
and sacrifice required. By providing
genuine financial support to make compliance
possible. Not backflipping every
few days, such as changing the goalposts
on tradies and HSC students.
And certainly not by raising hopes, then
dashing them. Establishing a one-week
lockdown, then extending it another two.
Then another month. We can all see August
won’t be enough.
Business..................................18-20
Despite the obvious dedication of the
Premier, her senior ministers and everyone
in NSW Health and allied agencies,
it’s now clear our state underestimated
and underprepared for the Delta variant
in Sydney.
Walking in their shoes can’t be easy.
Flawed as it has been, Sydney’s lockdown
has undoubtedly spared us thousands of
cases and deaths. Around the world, we
see countries grappling with Delta and
doing immeasurably worse.
So, I believe the public would sympathise
if the Premier admitted the obvious:
Sydney could have locked down faster
and harder. And in our understandable
desire to keep our society open, we misjudged.
Seeking this forgiveness is essential to
the Premier rallying the public one last
time. Gladys Berejiklian is right that lockdown
is only one part of the solution.
Vaccination is ultimately our ticket back
to a normal life. However, she again raises
unrealistic expectations by implying restrictions
can be eased in any significant
way by the end of August. Vaccination
will take months to be a game-changer.
This means a combination of solutions
and adjustments to settings is required.
Lockdowns are hard for people in all
Entertainment ....................21-27
Business Directory.......28-29
Auto..................................................30
sorts of situations – and those impacts
need genuine attention. But there’s a silver
lining. A more restrictive lockdown
can be shorter. Lockdown-lite in Sydney
simply hasn’t worked and we still have
the chance to switch to something that
might.
So it’s hard to understand why NSW isn’t
imposing restrictions at least as strict as
those that quashed last year’s Victorian
outbreak. Victoria had a curfew from 8pm
to 5am to limit household visits. Essential
workers required permits. Exercise was
limited to one hour. Stores like Bunnings
were restricted to click and collect. At the
very least, this could be implemented in
specific LGAs like Cumberland and Canterbury
Bankstown until cases eased.
There’s more to do: massively surging
the state’s contact tracing capability.
Rapid testing and vaccination of workers
who still need to move around. Genuine
outreach and integration of multicultural
communities. And restoring JobKeeper –
if it was needed in 2020, then even more
so now.
Bromides about how “we’re all in this
together” no longer cut it. Our response
to Delta in Sydney is failing. Where’s the
real leadership and hope to bring the finish
line in sight?
Preserving our history
“Building parks for people”: Government completes major refurbishment
NICOLA BARTON
A
slice of Parramatta Park’s heritage
has been preserved with a
number of conservation works
now complete.
The State Government has completed
$1 million worth of important refurbishments
to historical convict sites, park
pavilions, bridges, gatehouses, monuments
and park amenities, as part of the
Parramatta Park Heritage Conservation
Program.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces
Rob Stokes said the upgrades demonstrated
the State Government’s commitment
to “building parks for people”.
“Parramatta Park is one of the most
beautiful and historically significant
parks in Sydney and this government is
proud to invest in its future,” he said.
“The new Greater Sydney Parklands
has a pivotal role in ensuring Sydney’s
iconic parks, such as Parramatta Park, are
preserved for generations to come.”
Parramatta MP Geoff Lee said the heritage
conservation work and improvements
to park infrastructure made Parramatta
An artists impression of the proposed ‘People’s Loop’.
Park an even better public place for locals
and visitors alike.
“The pandemic has shown us that public
spaces and parkland are critical to our
mental and physical wellbeing,” he said.
“Parramatta Park is a special place for
local residents and this is a great project
to protect its local history and improve the
visitor experience.”
Recently residents have been fighting for
the preservation of 60 mature trees which
were set to be bulldozed to make way for
the new ‘People’s Loop’ project.
The $2.5 million project aims to remove
the majority of vehicles from within the
core of the park.
Councillor Patricia Prociv put forward a
notice of motion in June, following a petition
by the North Parramatta Residents
Action Group, calling for the Council
to not support the removal of the trees,
however, this was voted down.
The Dairy & Ranger Cottages have been restored.
Despite this, following community advocacy
and a pause in works, the original 60
trees earmarked for removal have been
reduced to 30.
The originally planned 86-space car
park in the south-west corner of the park
adjacent to the railway line has been
reduced to 79 spaces.
The original promise of 120 new replacement
trees has also been increased to 170
trees.
CITY COUNCIL
ADVERTISEMENT
A Message from Mayor Steve Christou
For more information visit, www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/arms-out-august
The jab: a solution we can’t get our hands on
The economically crippling lockdown will have
impacts for years to come. And the source of this
devastation is a haphazard vaccination roll out.
While I’ve offered council facilities and resources
to help with the vaccine roll out, we’ve only been
able to administer a limited amount that falls well
short of what we need.
We’ve seen the headlines about vaccination
targets as the ‘path out of the pandemic’, and that
70-80% of eligible people need to be vaccinated
to get to the next phase of an easing lockdown.
But just over 18% are fully vaccinated and we
currently don’t have the doses to reach these
targets.
It’s this constant cycle of telling people to get
vaccinated with some waiting months for an
appointment. Don’t tell us to come forward and
get the jab so that we can live freely sooner, and
then not offer enough resources to coincide with
these promises. Let’s not forget the mental health
and financial implications that will last even longer
than this disorderly vaccine rollout.
Give us more clinics and vaccines so we can get
this show on the road.
During August, I’m launching a campaign ‘Arms
out in August’ to be the first council area with
80% of our population vaccinated. I’m calling
on the State Government to take us up on our
offer to utilise our community centres. Just give
us the nurses and the jabs, and everyone in our
local government area the chance to make an
appointment as soon as possible to get vaccinated
so we can start rebuilding our community.
Thank you to our essential workers
Thank you to our essential workers for the
important work they do to keep our city going
during the pandemic. A shout out to Jason Ralph
and Mohamad El-Sayah for continuing to empty
our bins every week and cleansing the city to keep
us safe.
Perhaps the biggest change for Jason has been
the kind of waste he is picking up — he now
collects bins at COVID-19 testing clinics. Over 20
years in the role and somehow he doesn’t mind
early starts or the smell. Although lately he has
noticed he is getting the odd thumbs up or wave
as he picks up public bins. I don’t think people
have a true understanding of the work people like
Jason do, particularly when it’s done before they’re
even awake.
Mohamad normally spends his days picking up
roadkill or clearing car crashes but the pandemic
means his job has a different focus. He’s now in
our “cleansing team”, and travels the area, which
has been deemed a COVID-19 hotspot, to sanitise
public spaces and dispose of abandoned face
masks. The step-father to a four and five-year-old
feels blessed to have a job and to contribute to
community safety.
We don’t often get an insight into the life of
unseen essential workers so this is to recognise
and thank them.
Boost for mental health
services needed
With this prolonged lockdown, we must
carefully consider mental health and
the severe impact of financial pressures,
loneliness and isolation. Particularly, I believe
teens are vulnerable. Normally in a social
and educational environment, they’re now
being home schooled in isolation. They’re
missing out on vital experiences, growth and
educational opportunities and are becoming
susceptible to long term mental health
problems. I believe extra free mental health
services across the board are desperately
needed to see us through this. I have written
to the Premier and Health Minister asking
them to provide free counselling services to
the 8 local government areas in lockdown.
Change afoot at
famous theatre
NICOLA BARTON
Plans to redevelop the Riverside
Theatres are one step closer to
being realised, with a vision for it to
become the centrepiece of Parramatta’s
revitalised arts and culture precinct.
The City of Parramatta Council is driving
forward with its ambitious redevelopment
plans, after voting in a closed session
recently to progress its concept proposal.
The Council will use the $100 million it
obtained from the State Government after
it sold its Riverbank Car Park to make way
for the Powerhouse Parramatta project.
Despite years of uncertainty that the
upgrade would ever come to fruition,
Council has agreed to begin exploring
design options, developing functional
specifications and validating cost estimates.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob
Dwyer said the Council is ready to take
Riverside into the future.
“Riverside Theatres is the heart and soul
of performance culture in western Sydney
and for more than 30 years has attracted
some of the world’s best artists, nurtured
local talent and showcased the diverse
and vibrant stories of Sydney’s Central
River City,” he said.
“Our vision is that Riverside Theatres will
become the centrepiece of Parramatta’s
revitalised arts and culture precinct: a hub
of performance excellence that attracts
talent and investment, complements the
Powerhouse Parramatta, and welcomes
the whole community.
“We look forward to working with partners
in the government and private sectors
to breathe new life into the iconic theatre.”
The news of the redevelopment progressing
comes after long-serving Director,
Robert Love steps down after 20 years at
the helm.
Craig McMaster, who brings with
him more than 30 years’ experience in
global entertainment, theatre and venue
management will take the reins moving
forward.
Mr Love said he had enjoyed every
moment of his time at Riverside Theatres
and looked forward to seeing the evolution
of the next chapter in the venue’s 33-year
history.
“I am sincerely grateful to have had the
opportunity to be Director of Riverside
Theatres over the past two decades; it has
truly been the role of a lifetime,” he said.
Auburn: Three charged after
dramatic late-night arrest
Three men have been charged and
$10,000 cash seized following an incident
in Auburn recently.
About 11.10pm on Saturday, July
31, officers from Auburn Police Area
Command’s Proactive Crime Team were
patrolling McLean Street, Auburn, when
they approached a Nissan R50, which
was parked illegally with two men sitting
inside and the internal light on.
The driver and passenger aged 29 and
28-years-old exited the vehicle before the
younger man fled on foot.
One officer detained the older man,
while another officer pursued the
younger man on foot, running into the
backyard of a house on Mary Street.
When the male constable attempted to
speak to the man, two male occupants
of the home aged 31 and 60-years-old
approached the officer in an aggressive
manner and threatened him.
The officer requested the men step back
on multiple occasions, which they failed
to do, before the officer deployed OC
spray.
During the altercation, the officer
backed out of the property and the gate
was closed on him by the occupants,
before being forced back open by police
a short time later.
During this time, it’s alleged the
28-year-old man fled the property.
The younger male occupant was
arrested, while the older man was
spoken to along with a number of other
occupants.
Police also seized $10,000 cash at the
time.
The two men aged 28 and 31-years-old
have since been charged in relation to
the incident and both remain before the
courts.
Following further inquiries, the
60-year-old man was arrested and
charged with ‘intimidate police officer
in execution of duty’ and ‘resist or hinder
police officer in the execution of duty’.
All three will front court at a later date.
Wentworthville: Police appeal for
dash cam footage of accident
A young boy was airlifted to hospital
POLICE SNAPSHOT
Compiled by Nicola Barton
after being hit by a car at Wentworthville
recently.
About 4.40pm on Thursday, July 29,
emergency services were called to Lane
Street, near Veron Street, Wentworthville,
following reports a child had been
hit by a car.
A three-year-old boy was treated at
the scene for injuries to his head before
being airlifted to The Children’s Hospital
at Westmead.
The driver of the vehicle, a 36-yearold
man, was uninjured and taken for
mandatory testing.
Officers from Cumberland Police Area
Command attended and launched an
investigation into the circumstances
surrounding the crash.
As inquiries continue, police are
appealing for anyone with information,
or dash cam footage of the incident, to
come forward.
Anyone with information about this
incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers
on 1800 333 000.
Police cracking down on poor
adherence to COVID rules
NSW Police will be conducting a
compliance crackdown on the use of QR
check-in and face masks in and around
supermarkets and large retail premises
in the Greater Sydney area.
There is no reasonable excuse that
members of the wider community are
not adhering to current health orders
and using the QR check in and wearing
face masks.
NSW Police Force will have a zerotolerance
approach to members of the
public and businesses breaching these
orders.
Recent health advice has shown that
supermarkets and large retail stores are a
known source of concern when it comes
to spreading COVID-19.
Businesses not complying with the QR
checking system will receive a $5000
fine.
Members of the public who fail to check
in using the QR code will be fined a total
of $1000.
Not wearing a face mask carries a fine
of $500, unless the person has a medical
exemption.
Vaccine rollout has left
Western Sydney behind
ADVERTISEMENT
Julie Owens Bulletin
Last week the Federal Government released data
on vaccination rates across the country.
The data revealed that Parramatta has one of the lowest
vaccination rates in Sydney – just 35.1% of residents over
15 have had their first dose and only 17.7% of us are fully
vaccinated.
We came in just behind south west Sydney including
Fairfield, where the vaccination rates are 33.1% (first dose)
and 14.6% (fully vaccinated) and the inner south west
including Canterbury-Bankstown, where the rates are 33.5%
and 16.1%.
This is not a coincidence. All the ‘Local Government areas of
concern’ facing the harshest lockdown restrictions recorded
lower vaccination rates than the rest of Sydney.
The contrast with places like the North Shore, where more
than half the residents have had their first dose and 26.9%
are fully vaccinated, is stark.
There’s a straightforward explanation for this. People in
Western Sydney are younger on average than people in
parts of Sydney with higher vaccination rates.
In Parramatta, more than half the population is under 40,
meaning most of us weren’t eligible to get a first dose until
after the current lockdown started and the health advice on
AstraZeneca changed.
Prioritising the most vulnerable members of the community
in the vaccine rollout – seniors, people living in aged and
disability care and frontline workers – was and is the right
thing to do.
The problem is, the Morrison Government has bungled this
rollout so badly that we are now several months behind the
original vaccination targets and Western Sydney has been
left behind.
My office has been inundated with calls from people who
are confused about the health advice on AstraZeneca
because Scott Morrison failed to communicate it clearly in a
stream of panicky late night press conferences.
We’ve also heard from many people who are struggling to
navigate the government’s website to book an appointment
for Pfizer or AstraZeneca.
It seems that GP clinics are not accepting online bookings
Help during lockdown
Scan the
QR code for a list of
local services that can help
if you, a
loved one or your
business is struggling to
get through lockdown.
I managed to book in for my vaccine – but most of Parramatta is still
waiting.
for new patients, so people who can’t get the vaccine from
their usual GP face an uphill battle.
Walk-in vaccination clinics have started to appear
in Western Sydney (not Parramatta) and many local
pharmacies are now taking bookings for AstraZeneca.
Sadly, the same shortages that have plagued GPs
throughout this rollout are also affecting pharmacies. As
of the end of last week, less than half of the pharmacies
approved to administer the vaccine are ‘online’ and
pharmacies in COVID hotspots are reporting a two week
wait to receive vaccine supplies.
Scott Morrison waited until December 2020 to ink a deal
with Pfizer when other countries were securing supplies in
June. Now, after condemning lockdowns, he’s telling us they
will continue until 70%-80% of the eligible population is
vaccinated.
This is a tall order when we are still relying on a leaky hotel
quarantine system, we’re at the back of the queue for Pfizer,
and the government is still failing to get the supplies we do
have where they’re most needed.
The NSW Premier has asked us to “keep trying” to get the
jab. Thanks to the Morrison Government, that seems to be
all we can do.
LOCAL NEWS
Epping dream home
Stunning penthouse the last of its kind on the market for “years”
NICOLA BARTON
A
rare, luxurious penthouse property
is up for grabs in Epping and
is said to be the last of its kind for
“years”.
The two-storey, five-bedroom residence
is positioned on the uppermost floors of
the tallest of three towers, the 29-storey
Langston Tower, and has price expectations
of about $3.3 million.
It’s the last remaining penthouse at Cbus
Property’s development, The Langston.
According to Adrian Pozzo, Cbus Property’s
Chief Executive Officer, a similar
property is unlikely to become available
in Epping for some time.
“With no new residential high-rise
projects currently under construction in
the Epping town centre, it will realistically
be years before a penthouse of this size
and calibre becomes available again,” he
said.
“We have already had significant interest
in the property from local north-west
Sydney downsizers, from areas such as
Beecroft, Cheltenham and Carlingford,
who are looking for something with
The incredible penthouse has amazing views, and a $3.3 million price tag.
comparable living space and status to
their current homes.”
The Langston Tower penthouse boasts
five bedrooms, incorporating two equally
sized master bedrooms with ensuites, on
separate levels.
“In this sense, the penthouse presents
a great opportunity for purchasers who
might be seeking a home where they can
also comfortably accommodate their
parents or in-laws with their own family,”
Mr Pozzo said.
“With stunning interiors that span two
levels and more than 230 square metres
of internal living space, there is plenty of
room for large families.
“Also, with 180-degree views that reach
to the Sydney CBD to the south, and all the
way to the Blue Mountains to the west, it is
clear that this is a very special property.”
The development features a pool deck,
with a 20 metre pool and poolside cabanas,
as well as a wellness hub with a yoga
and gym studio.
Its Sky Lounge & Dining offers a landscaped
ter race capturing views of the
Sydney CBD skyline, plus shared dining
rooms and spaces to celebrate special
occasions.
A podium-level, residents-only garden,
features barbeques, casual seating areas,
play zones and open green spaces. A
shared co-working space is also provided
for residents to easily work from home.
“We are looking forward to welcoming
our future residents to The Langston,
where they will enjoy a convenient and
connected lifestyle set within a highly
liveable and accessible precinct,” Mr
Pozzo said.
NICOLA BARTON
Fed up Granville residents say they
feel ignored after 30 long years
of campaigning for the removal
of illegally dumped asbestos near their
properties.
It is believed to have been dumped in the
reserve area between residents’ backyards
and the A’Becketts Creek canal by James
Hardie in the 1960’s.
Local resident Sam Mitry first lodged
a complaint with Parramatta Council
back in 1990, and has lodged numerous
complaints since.
Despite his decades of campaigning, Mr
Mitry says “tonnes of asbestos” remains at
the site.
“How can the NSW Government spend
many millions of dollars in Parramatta
but ignore fixing the horrible health and
safety risk here?” he said.
City of Parramatta Councillor Phil
Bradley, who has advocated on Mr Mitry’s
behalf over the years, told Parra News
residents were sent letters some years ago
warning of the risk and were told to not
hang washing outside on a windy day and
to clean their shoes before entering the
house.
“Children have used the asbestos parts as
chalk to write on the stormwater concrete
channel,” he said.
LOCAL NEWS
After 30 years of complaints,
serious health risk remains
City of Parramatta Councillor Phil Bradley with Granville residents Sam Mitry and
Rashid Chowdhury.
“Still we have buck passing between
State Government agencies.”
Cr Bradley says there are also noxious
weeds such as asthma weed and castor
oil plant growing in the affected area,
believed to cause health issues among
residents.
In 2016, City of Parramatta Council
conducted a risk assessment and soil
investigations of the land.
This confirmed the presence of asbestos,
likely associated with historic disposal by
James Hardie Industries.
This was reported to the NSW Asbestos
Coordination Committee, which
convened a working group including the
NSW Environment Protection Authority
(EPA), Safework NSW and the Western
Sydney Area Local Health District.
An EPA spokesperson said interim work
completed on the embankment has previously
included covering by shotcreting
(spray on concrete).
“The long term management of
A’Becketts Creek is complex and requires
significant planning from an environmental,
geotechnical, engineering and
land ownership perspective,” the spokesperson
said.
“Multiple NSW Government agencies
and City of Parramatta Council are working
on this long term solution.”
Work to stabilise and encapsulate the
embankment is ongoing.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
With Saturn still sauntering through
Aquarius, it’s one step forwards and two
steps back! You can also expect some
communication mayhem this week, as
Neptune and Jupiter increase confusion
and impatience. Loved ones will
certainly test your tolerance and selfrestraint.
If you are firm and flexible
(which is a tricky balance) then you’ll
be able to navigate your way through
the constantly changing landscape. Patience
and persistence are the keys.
HOROSCOPES
BROUGHT TO YOU BY BOHO ASTRO - JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Jupiter and Saturn are visiting your seclusion
zone. So – whether or not you’re
in Covid lockdown, quarantine or isolation
– slow down and reflect on where
you’re going, and where you’ve been.
When it comes to a much-needed holiday,
be patient and plan carefully. It’s
also a time when unresolved relationship
issues could be dredged up all over
again. Venus and Mars encourage you to
be proactive about healing the past and
heading towards a brighter future.
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Feisty Aries folk need to have an ambitious
project to channel all their fiery
energy into. (As original celebrity chef –
and birthday great – Julia Child declared,
“Find something you’re passionate
about and keep tremendously interested
in it.”). This week – with lucky Venus and
powerful Pluto activating your work and
career zones – you’ll be given the opportunity
to influence or help those around
you so don’t waste it. It’s time to lead
with style and substance!
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
This week’s stars highlight your occasional
inclination to jealous or overbearing
Bullish behaviour. It’s time to loosen
your possessive grip on a loved one,
otherwise you’ll just drive them away
with your demanding and stubborn demeanour.
You’re also in the mood to text
and tweet and communicate but are you
posting confusing mixed messages? And
are others happy to hear what you’ve got
to say? Strive to be more diplomatic, especially
at home and work.
Are you feeling hemmed in at home or
within the confines of your local neighbourhood?
This week’s stars favour
cleaning, de-cluttering, renovating and/
or extending your present living space
so it’s more open and spacious. Twins
need room to breathe! Expect some domestic
confusion and family drama, as
impatience and uncertainty overtake
common sense. If you try to escape from
your current commitments, then loved
ones won’t be impressed.
This week a relationship with your girlfriend,
boyfriend, sweetheart, spouse or
business partner gets a powerful boost
as Venus makes a lovely link with Pluto.
So make the most of the diplomatic
vibes and improved communication.
On the weekend Mercury, Venus and
Mars encourage you to contribute your
Crab talents to a worthy cause within
your local neighbourhood. If you do,
then satisfying community connections
and positive friendships will follow.
The Sun and Mercury are both moving
through your sign. So it’s time to tap
into the very essence of what makes you
the feisty, creative, dramatic Diva that
you are. Don’t let pandemic problems,
relationship rumbles, work worries or
financial fiascos diminish your flamboyant
style. Be inspired by Leo model and
actress Cara Delevingne (who was born
on August 12, 1992). “Be brave. Believe
in yourself. Make yourself proud.” Spoken
like a true Lion!
Mercury vamps into your sign on
Wednesday night (London time) where
it joins Venus and Mars. So you’ll be
at your clever, charismatic and proactive
best. But you could still experience
problems with a family member, close
friend or work colleague who is envious
of your numerous talents and achievements.
Don’t waste precious time feeling
disheartened and disappointed. Just
flash them a vibrant Virgo smile and encourage
them to follow their dreams!
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
With Venus, Mars and Mercury activating
your karma zone, be careful how you
treat other people (in person and online).
Self-indulgent behaviour, unrealistic
expectations and unfair criticism will
just boomerang back on you! So your
mantra is from birthday babe, model
and actress Cara Delevingne. “The energy
you give off is the energy you receive.”
Some quiet meditation or soulful contemplation
will help you get through the
week in a more relaxed state.
The stars highlight your love life, as
Venus and Pluto invite Cupid to pay you
a visit. If you’re attached, organise a romantic
candle-lit rendezvous or a cosy
weekend getaway. Singles … it’s the perfect
time to download a new dating App,
refresh your online profile or go on a first
date. It’s important that you look for a
lover who is also a friend. Killer curves or
bulging biceps will mean nothing if you
can’t connect and converse in a deep
and meaningful way.
This week be careful your spontaneous
Sagittarian spirit doesn’t land you in
unexpected trouble! You’re keen to communicate
(in person and online) but,
if you blurt out the first thing on your
mind, you could find yourself regretting
your haste. Many adventurous Archers
are keen to head off on an overseas
trip, an interstate interlude or a weekend
getaway. But make sure you doublecheck
your itinerary (and current Covid
restrictions) before you go.
Venus and Pluto boost your charisma,
so make the most of it (especially on
Wednesday and Thursday). Mercury
also joins Venus and Mars in fellow earth
sign Virgo, which activates your perfectionist
side. If people want to get things
done promptly and professionally, they
need to put a conscientious Capricorn in
charge! Inspiration comes from famous
Wild West sharpshooter (and birthday
great) Annie Oakley, “Aim at a high mark
and you will hit it.”
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
DIGITAL AGE LAWYERS • 8858 3211 • WWW.DIGITALAGELAWYERS.COM
By Eleni Tsoromokos, Solicitor
When it comes to children and parenting
in relationship breakdowns, parents
will negotiate or even commence
proceedings to reach a consensus about
the new family structure and how time
with the children is to be divided.
However, this often leaves grandparents
in a position of uncertainty as to whether
they will be ‘permitted’ to maintain a
relationship with their grandchildren.
Sadly, the practical result in many cases
is that grandparents are left feeling like
their time with their grandchildren is at
the whim of their estranged son-in-law or
daughter-in-law, with time often reduced
to birthday parties or school events.
However, there are legal mechanisms
that provide for the rights of grandparents
in certain circumstances. The Family Law
Act states that, as an underlying principle,
it is in the child’s best interest to have a
“right to spend time on a regular basis
with, and communicate on a regular basis
with, both their parents and other people
significant to their care, welfare and
development such as grandparents”.
The law recognises the importance of
maintaining grandparent relationships,
so much so that grandparents are specifically
named as having the right to apply to
the Court for an Order to spend time with
their grandchildren. However, it is important
to note that applying to the Court is
not the only avenue for grandparents.
Other steps include starting a dialogue
with the parents, arranging mediation to
discuss issues, entering into a parenting
plan that expressly outlines a grandparent’s
time with their grandchildren, or
entering into Consent Orders (agreements
sealed by the Court). When the household
in which a child lives in is dangerous or the
child is at risk of neglect, abuse or violence,
then grandparents have the right to step in
to apply to the Court for custody.
Every family and situation is different,
however, and what works for one family
may not work for another. In this sense, it is
always important to seek specialised legal
advice to ensure a tailor-made approach
for the best outcomes for children.
BUSINESS
WITH GRAHAM FITZPATRICK
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
Why paid advertising remains a
key component to marketing
I
would like you to imagine you are
starting a new business back in the
pre-digital age.
In a time where local newspapers and
the Yellow Pages were business essentials.
Imagine after months of planning,
renovating, decorating and training,
you have finally thrown open the doors
of your new store, office or workshop.
You are now open for business.
But where are the customers?
In this time before social media businesses
had no choice but to spend money
on advertising.
They advertised in directories, local
papers and other advertising platforms
to attract customers to their business.
Those that did not advertise either went
nowhere or went out of business.
So why do we not do it in today’s
marketplace?
In this digital age businesses spend
large amounts of money on creating
awesome looking websites.
They also spend lots of time creating
compelling content on social media
pages.
But again, where are the customers?
Where is their advertising?
The principles of good marketing and
advertising has been around for a long
time and have not really changed.
Marketing and Advertising experts still
talk about consistent, paid advertising
being important.
So let me ask you these questions.
Do your customers know you have a
website? Do they know you are actively
on social media? Are you advertising?
If you answered “maybe”, “I think so”
or “no” to these questions you need to get
active and start doing paid advertising
now.
Ad words, paid content, paid ads,
boosted posts, sponsorship and all other
types of online advertising should be
part of your business plan and marketing
strategy.
Newspapers, billboards, radio
stations... you need to consider where
your customers are and how you attract
them.
Nothing should be off the table as far
as your strategy and considerations for
advertising go.
You need to shout it from the rooftops
and let people know who you are.
What you do. And how they can contact
you.
BROTHERS HAVE
PLENTY TO SHARE
EMILY FESZCZUK
Starting as buskers alongside Tash
Sultana and Tones and I, folk
rock duo Pierce Brothers have
made a name for themselves in
Australia and around the world.
The twin brothers, Jack and Patrick Pierce
released their new album ‘Into the Great
Unknown’ earlier this year and are hoping
to share it with Sydney audiences during a
live show in October.
Patrick Pierce told Parra News that the
Melbourne duo’s supportive family led to
their interesting real names and career in
music.
“Mum and dad had three kids and wanted
one more but got twins so Jack is actually
John Patrick and I am Patrick John…
funny thing is until I was about 15 I just
thought that was how twins were named,”
Patrick said.
“It wasn’t until our older brothers started
playing guitar that we thought it was the
coolest thing ever and our family had a big
focus on creativity so they all backed us.”
Exploding onto the world scene in 2014
with their breakout EP ‘The Night Tree’, the
musicians have been honing their skills
leading into their new album and national
tour.
“In the past whoever brought up a song
was sort of the Director and our last few records
we did between tours when we had
time so it was quite disjointed but this time
we were staying at a studio with a guest
house during lockdown,” Patrick said.
“It was a completely new way of making
music that we had to get used to but we
became so in sync and had this creative
language and understanding of what we
wanted which created songs so much better
than anything we had ever done.”
Despite Patrick describing them as a folk
roots duo that jump around like a punk
band, ‘Into the Great Unknown’ deals
with serious topics that are very relevant
in today’s world and the huge uncertainty
within it.
“Trepidation came through a lot as Jack
was about to have a baby and I was about
to get engaged so we were dealing with
those big changes in life,” he said.
“We talk about dynamics shifting but
around the world there was big storm on
New Channel Seven drama ‘RFDS’
will premiere this Wednesday, August 11
at 8.40pm. Based on real-life stories of
the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the series
stars Stephen Peacocke, Rob Collins,
Justine Clarke, Emma Hamilton and Ash
Ricardo. ‘RFDS’ was filmed on location
in and around the NSW outback town of
Broken Hill.
‘The Block: Fans v Faves’ premiered
at 7pm on Sunday on Channel Nine. The
hit series will go to head to head with
‘The Voice’ on Channel Seven.
The eighth and final season of cult
favourite ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ will
premiere on SBS next Friday, August 13 at
9.25pm. It’s understood the eighth installment
will tackle the Black Lives Matter
movement, the pandemic, and the New
York first responders at the frontline of
the crisis.
New quiz-panel show ‘Question
Everything’, hosted by Jan Fran and Wil
Anderson, will premiere on the ABC on
Wednesday, August 18 at 8.30pm. In a
world dominated by fake stories, fake
claims, scams, frauds and outright lies,
‘Question Everything’ will dissect the
news, sort the real from the rumours,
separate fact from fiction and flatten conspiracy
theories back down to Earth.
All five episodes of the new season
of ‘Five Bedrooms’ will be available to
stream on Paramount+ from this Wednesday,
August 11. Season two is exclusive
to the new streaming service, and at this
stage there is no confirmation it will have
a free to air screening on 10 at some point.
Popular US fantasy series ‘Sweet
Tooth’, which is filmed in New Zealand,
has been renewed for a second season by
Netflix.
Paris Hilton has made a comeback to
television with her own cooking series.
‘Cooking with Paris’ is currently streaming
on Netflix and sees the socialite
cooking in the kitchen with some of her
celebrity friends.
Prayers up to the legend Bob Odenkirk,
the star of ‘Better Call Saul’, after
he collapsed on the set of the hit show
and was rushed to hospital. It was later
revealed the 58-year-old suffered a heart
attack, but reports out of the US say he’s
now on the mend despite being fairly
touch and go in the immediate aftermath.
Odenkirk rose to fame playing the same
role on one of the best shows of all-time,
‘Breaking Bad’.
Foxtel has announced a new threeyear
deal with the NBL and ESPN. From
next season, all 140 NBL regular season
games will now be available on ESPN.
Customers stay happy
Bridgestone earns praise as centres deliver quality service and support
NATHAN TAYLOR
Bridgestone is living up to its
promise of customer service via
its network of Bridgestone Select
and Bridgestone Service Centre stores
throughout Australia, with Canstar Blue
declaring Bridgestone customers as the
most satisfied in its annual rankings.
Bridgestone was named as one of the
top performers in the Car Tyre Retailer
category, with Australian motorists giving
a perfect five-stars across three of the six
core criteria: Overall Satisfaction, Quality
of Tyres, and Value for Money, and four
stars in the remaining categories: advice
by staff, customer service and range of
tyres.
According to Bridgestone Australia
Director of Sales, Heath Barclay, the
accolade is recognition of the collective
effort undertaken across the network,
particularly over the past 12 months.
“Our Bridgestone Select and Bridgestone
Service Centre store owners take great
pride in representing the Bridgestone
brand, and this is reflected in their service
delivery. We’re honoured to be recognised
Bridgestone continues to impress customers.
by motorists for customer satisfaction
because it showcases the incredible
commitment from our entire network to
exceed expectations,” he said.
“The past 18 months have been tough
on everyone, but we’re delighted that
Bridgestone stores remain a trusted
source of expert service, quality products
and that our collective team continues to
put customers first.”
Bridgestone has also been named as
‘Australia’s Most Trusted Tyre Brand’ for
eight consecutive years in the annual
Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brands
survey, and the only recipient since the
tyres category was introduced.
“Australian motorists trust Bridgestone
tyres, and they have confidence that the
best customer experience is through a
Bridgestone Select or Bridgestone Service
Centre store,” Mr Barclay said.
“We take great pride in knowing that our
customers are driving out of Bridgestone
stores all around Australia in safe hands,
having had an enjoyable experience with
our local experts.”
You’ll find Bridgestone Select outlets in
Smithfield and Silverwater.
Eels’ top four finish
in serious doubt
NATHAN TAYLOR
As their top four hopes hang in the
balance, Parramatta will be missing
inspirational hooker Reed Mahoney for
the remainder of the season.
The 23-year-old left the field early in the Eels’
big loss to South Sydney last Friday night on the
Gold Coast after injuring his shoulder.
The talented Queenslander has a history of
shoulder issues, having been sidelined by a
similar injury earlier this season.
Mahoney’s absence is a huge loss for
Parramatta who will be staring down the barrel
of four straight defeats when they take on the
in-form Manly Sea Eagles this Saturday night.
Despite the return of halfback Mitchell Moses
from a back fracture, the Eels were no match for
the red-hot Bunnies who piled on six tries to two
in the 40-12 demolition.
South Sydney led 32-0 before Parramatta’s first
points came via Maika Sivo in the 56th minute.
“The boys are disappointed, they just
outplayed us, they were too good, simple as
that,” a dejected Eels coach Brad Arthur said.
“They controlled field position, they iced their
plays when they needed to and when they had
possession they capitalised on it. They are playing
full of confidence and things work. We are
just down a bit on our confidence, I think.”
Whilst still in fourth on the NRL ladder,
Parramatta sit equal in competition points
with the Roosters on 28 points. If sixth-placed
Manly defeat the Eels this weekend, they will
more than likely leap-frog Parramatta in the
standings.
Arthur said the prospect of finishing in the
top four is still alive despite looking incredibly
precarious.
“There’s still four weeks to go but we can’t be
worried about the top four finish at the moment,
we have to worry about getting some football
back on that we know that we need to be playing
and find our rhythm again,” he said.
Following their date with Des Hasler’s men this
Saturday night, the Eels face the lowly Cowboys
and high flyers Melbourne and Penrith on the
run home.
Parramatta would need to win at least two of
their remaining four games to have any shot of a
top four finish and two bites at the cherry.
