The museum, tentatively<br />

The Japanese electronics<br />

and video game<br />

company N<strong>in</strong>tendo plans<br />

to convert one of its<br />

factories <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world’s first<br />

N<strong>in</strong>tendo museum, accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to a statement. They have been<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g to construct a gallery as<br />

a way to share both <strong>the</strong>ir product<br />

development history and philosophy<br />

with <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

Tentatively named N<strong>in</strong>tendo<br />

Gallery, <strong>the</strong> museum will sit at <strong>the</strong><br />

site of <strong>the</strong> N<strong>in</strong>tendo Uji Ogura Plant,<br />

one of N<strong>in</strong>tendo’s older factories. It<br />

was orig<strong>in</strong>ally built <strong>in</strong> 1969 and was<br />

used to manufacture play<strong>in</strong>g cards,<br />

later hous<strong>in</strong>g a customer service<br />

center for product repairs. The<br />

factory, however, has sat unused<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 2016 after <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g of a<br />

newer facility.<br />

N<strong>in</strong>tendo, which began as a<br />

producer of play<strong>in</strong>g cards <strong>in</strong> 1889,<br />

has achieved success with its game<br />

consoles as well as with <strong>the</strong> Mario,<br />

Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon<br />

media franchises.<br />

In 2020 N<strong>in</strong>tendo was named<br />

Japan’s richest company. The<br />

release of <strong>the</strong> new game Animal<br />

Cross<strong>in</strong>g: New Horizons co<strong>in</strong>cided<br />

with <strong>the</strong> pandemic lockdown, which<br />

contributed to record sales of <strong>the</strong><br />

N<strong>in</strong>tendo Switch handheld gam<strong>in</strong>g<br />

system. Profits <strong>in</strong>creased by 34% as<br />

<strong>the</strong> company earned over $16 billion<br />

<strong>in</strong> sales.<br />

Pokémon play<strong>in</strong>g cards have<br />

also found renewed <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pandemic, with a<br />

rare sealed Pokémon card<br />

set fetch<strong>in</strong>g $408,000 at Heritage<br />

Auctions <strong>in</strong> Dallas, Texas.<br />

The museum, tentatively titled <strong>the</strong><br />

N<strong>in</strong>tendo Gallery, will showcase<br />

<strong>the</strong> company’s historic products as<br />

well as related exhibits and game<br />

experiences. It is slated to open<br />
