his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of

Black manuka is a

UNSIGHTLY blackened
manuka plants are a sign
manuka scale may be
present.
Manuka blight is caused
by the Eriococcus species
of scale insect sucking
sap and exuding copious
amounts of honeydew. The
honeydew is then attacked
by sooty mould which can
blacken the leaves, severely
reducing photosynthesis.
One Australian scale insect,
Eriococcus orariensis,
was discovered at Orari
Gorge in 1937, hence its
scientific name.
The combination of the
sap-sucking by the many
scales on a plant and the
reduced photosynthesis
over a few years can kill
manuka.
This scale species appears
to have declined
due to a fungal pathogen
and has been replaced by
another less noxious scale,
Eriococcus leptospermi.
This scale species tends to
inhabit the new growth
tips, whereas Eriococcus
orariensis inhabit bark
crevices of trunks and
branches.
Adult female scales are
1.25mm long, oval-shaped
and reddish to light brown.
Female scales are wingless
and have antennae
with six segments. The
female has wax threads
that are produced from
pores on the abdomen and
she uses these threads to
construct a white felted sac
to enclose her body apart
from an opening at the
rear.
Over several weeks each
female lays about 50 eggs
which hatch within 30
minutes of being laid.
The nymphs or crawlers
settle on a suitable site
and insert their piercing
mouthparts to siphon the
sap from manuka.
