KICK-OFF 3PM

Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
dig. So, Louisy went looking for work elsewhere.
infrastructure projects. I used to drive
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
would see their names on tenders,” he says. “So I the lorry, and
construction and went to them is all a and fundamental said ‘I can’t beat the others on part of all supply pump too.” chains.
price, but I’ll be there when I say I’ll be there’.” This
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
WALKING THE LINE
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO NIGEL
PEARSON, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED
WITH BRISTOL CITY FOOTBALL CLUB.
T
here’s no doubt that Nigel’s
vast experience and quality
will ensure his side arrive
here today well organised and with a
nice blend of youth and experience.
They possess a real attacking threat,
which is complemented by the
solidity of a good formation, and we’ll
need to ensure we meet what will be
a very tough test if we’re to emerge
with the sought-after points. We’re
looking forward to a good challenge
and to sharing a post-game drink
with Nigel and his staff.
I’m writing these notes the morning
after our frustrating defeat to AFC
Bournemouth.
Having started the game very well
and looking in control, we gave away
a poor first goal that clearly impacted
us as a team and energised our
opponent. We were then very much
on the back foot for the remainder
of the half and conceded an easily
avoidable second goal that really
damaged us going into the break.
We needed a reaction after half-time,
and the players again deserve a lot of
credit for the manner in which they
responded. We got the early goal and
then, in truth, attacked fluently and
consistently and created a number
of chances that I believe merited at
least a point. Unfortunately, their
goalkeeper was in inspired form,
and we failed to apply the finishing
touches to some excellent forward
play. Right to the final whistle, the
players pushed forward, and we were
literally an agonising few inches away
from equalising with the last kick of
the fixture.
A first defeat of the season was
a bitter pill to swallow, but these
are the moments when teams gel
together and players learn both
individually and collectively.
Let me talk about the first
Bournemouth goal. Our defenders
are tasked with being brave and
moving into positions to accept the
football and make good decisions.
Rob Dickie, along with all our
We stand for clean sport.
Even for your skin.
Sport is the most beautiful thing in the world, and nothing must be allowed to pollute that beauty.
That is why, besides developing increasingly high-performance materials that have a low impact
on the environment, we at Erreà are the first teamwear company in Europe to have been awarded
STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX ® certification.
This certification sets extremely strict limits for substances harmful to health, which is why our fabrics
defence, does this consistently well and
has had an outstanding season thus
far. On this one occasion, a mistake was
made, and we were ruthlessly punished.
What was most pleasing, however, was to
see Rob continue to be brave, continue
to take the football and indeed in the
second half I thought he delivered an
excellent display, combining composure in
possession with good physicality out of it.
Rob responded as you hope any top
young player will. All of our players will
make mistakes through the course of a
season, it’s the only way we ever learn.
Yet, they all to a man, display the strength
of character for being better for such
experiences. They’ve shown this in the
way they took a point from Reading having
been 3-1 down, or the manner they
reacted to being behind against Barnsley.
I believe our supporters recognise that
we’ll have some really good days and some
not so good ones. But there’s one attribute
that must never change and that’s the
commitment to the cause. As long as
our fans see the players show the hunger
and desire, the fight and the passion,
whenever they pull on the shirt, then I know
we’ll be backed every time. The points at
Middlesbrough when down to 10 men, the
fightback against Barnsley, the late goals
at the weekend and the last-gasp chance
that saw us almost take all three points,
are examples of the players showing such
character.
I’ve consistently mentioned the impact
of our supporters, both home and away.
The players are absolutely responding
to the fantastic support that was again
so evident at Bournemouth on Tuesday
evening. In return, the players are
giving everything every time they enter
the pitch and this ‘collaboration’, this
togetherness of our players and fans,
will have a huge impact throughout the
course of this season. Thank you as
always for such backing!
Enjoy the game!
GRAY SEALS LOAN MOVE
QPR signed striker Andre Gray on loan from Watford
for the remainder of the season on the final day of
the summer transfer window.
Woverhampton-born Gray started out at
Shrewsbury Town before spells at non-League
Hinckley United and Luton Town.
He moved to Brentford under Mark Warburton in
2014/15, scoring 17 league goals as they reached
the Championship play-offs. The following season,
Gray netted 23 times to fire Burnley to the Premier
League and he was also part of Watford’s promotion
success last term.
The 30-year-old forward has been capped five times
for Jamaica.
KELMAN’S GILLS SWITCH
CHARLIE Kelman has joined League One Gillingham
on loan for the remainder of the season.
The 19-year-old striker came to QPR from Southend
United last October and made 15 appearances in
that time, with 13 of those coming from the bench.
Gills boss Steve Evans said: “Charlie is an exciting
talent who has a big future at QPR.
“Mark Warburton and Les Ferdinand are big fans of
the boy and our supporters will love this lad.”
BANSAL-McNULTY
JOINS CRAWLEY
AMRIT Bansal-McNulty has joined League Two
Crawley Town on loan.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who joined QPR at the
age of 14, will stay at The People’s Pension Stadium
until 3rd January 2022.
The Northern Irishman has previously headed out on
loan to Torquay United, Dartford and Como in Italy.
Crawley manager John Yems said: “Amrit comes
highly recommended from QPR. He’s a good young
addition to the squad and I’m sure he’ll do well here.”
KANE HEADS FOR COVENTRY
TODD Kane has joined Coventry City for an
undisclosed fee.
The right-back signed for QPR from Chelsea in the
summer of 2019 and made a total of 65 appearances
in all competitions for the R’s, scoring three goals.
Sky Blues boss Mark Robins said: “He’s a player
with quality and versatility, and also brings with him
experience at this level.
“He adds to our options and is a good player to have
within the squad.”
HAVING SCORED ON HIS QPR DEBUT
AS A SUBSTITUTE AT READING, THE
DEADLINE DAY LOAN ARRIVAL FROM
WATFORD IS NOW AIMING FOR A
REGULAR STARTING SPOT…
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 13

HOOPS
Andre - you made your QPR debut
as a second-half substitute at
Reading. You must have been pleased to
come on and play your part by starting
the comeback?
It was a dream debut to come on and
score. It was an important goal at the
time as we were 3-1 down so it gave us
that boost and belief that we needed.
You could see in your celebrations in
front of the away end when the lastgasp
equaliser went in just how much it
meant to you?
Definitely. I thought the QPR fans
were amazing all afternoon. We were
the better team on the day, so it was
frustrating to find ourselves 3-1 down.
That knocked us back a bit. But I got us
back in it and then for Stefan [Johansen]
to get the equaliser in front of the
travelling supporters was a great feeling.
You joined QPR on transfer deadline day
from Watford. What attracted you to
the club?
I just wanted to start enjoying my
football again. The manager also played
a massive part in my move having
previously worked with him at Brentford.
It was an easy decision.
How does Mark Warburton compare to
other managers you’ve played under?
What does he do differently?
I think it’s his attention to detail and the
belief he has in his squad. I had a bit of a
rocky time at Watford so it was important
to be somewhere I can get back on track.
I felt like this was the best place with the
best manager.
It kind of feels like the end of an era at
Watford with both yourself and Troy
Deeney leaving in recent weeks?
Possibly, but that’s football. As the years
go by, players get older, and teams go in
different directions. It happens at every club.
I had a rocky time at
Obviously, we’ve got two pretty decent
strikers in Charlie Austin and Lyndon
Dykes so it’s not going to be easy for
you to dislodge them?
No, of course not, and that’s another
part of football; you don’t come
somewhere and not expect to have
to work hard to get your place in the
team. It’s no different here. I know the
challenge ahead so it’s down to me to
work hard and prove to the manager that
I should be starting. Everyone needs
competition. It’s healthy.
HOOPS
I know the challenge ahead
so it’s down to me to prove
that I should be starting
You helped Burnley to promotion
from the Championship in 2015/16
- what’s the secret to getting out of
this division?
A lot of hard work. You have to play it
quite smart. At QPR we’re a footballing
team, but we have to be cute at times
and not overplay. We might need to grind
results out on occasion. You can’t play
pretty all the time especially in the winter
when the pitches start to roughen up.
It’s about digging in and having a strong
team ethic.
You’re here on loan, is a permanent
move something that you’re aiming for?
Of course. I came here to help the team
and to do well. We’ll see what happens
after that, but that would be a great
option for me. First and foremost, I’m
concentrating on the season ahead of
me and then we’ll see.
HOOPS
We’re a footballing
team, but you can’t play
Having come up through non-League,
do you think you appreciate being a
professional footballer that bit more?
Possibly. As footballers, you probably
take things for granted at times. It’s
not until you’re out of the side that you
realise how much you miss it. It’s going to
be an important year for me to get back
on track. This is what I want to do and
what I enjoy doing.
You recently became a dad to twins - how
are you finding that? Tiring, I imagine?
You could say that [laughs]. The game’s
sleep the night before! It is tough but I
wouldn’t want it any other way.
Will we see Leigh-Anne (Pinnock,
partner and singer in Little Mix) at a
QPR game soon?
I’m sure she’ll be there soon once the
kids are a bit older. Hopefully she’ll get
down before the end of the season.
You played under Nigel Pearson at
Watford - what can we expect from his
Bristol City side?
An honest team. A team that will work
hard and be very resilient. Again, I come
back to playing in the Championship as
that’s what most teams are like. There are
no easy games, anyone can beat anyone
and that’s the beauty of this league.
It’s an experienced dressing room at
QPR with some promising youngsters.
It’s a good mix, isn’t it?
Before I came, I took a look at the squad
and watched a few games. It’s the
perfect mix. You do need the experience
at times, but you also need the youth as
well to play with no fear and bring that
spark. We’ve got that in abundance.
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
Bristol is famously the only major city in England never to
have had a Premier League football club.
However, with some big investment both on and off the pitch,
the Robins from Ashton Gate will be looking to right that
wrong sooner rather than later.
Struggles throughout the early 1980s left City in the fourth
division of English football before a resurgence the following
decade. The Robins then yo-yoed between tiers two and
three but have now remained at this level since 2015/16.
Redevelopment of their iconic ground has left City with a
stadium fit for top-flight football and, boasted by a squad
filled with talent, the Robins could be ones to watch this term.
That said, City have started the current campaign somewhat
inconsistently and will need to find their feet sooner rather
than later in order to mount a promotion push come May.
Experienced boss Nigel
Pearson took the
management reins at
Ashton Gate in February
following the short-lived
tenure of Dean Holden.
Having begun his playing
career in 1981, Pearson
enjoyed prolonged spells
with Shrewsbury Town,
Sheffield Wednesday and
Middlesbrough before
hanging up his boots
in 1998.
He quickly moved into
management with a brief
stint at Carlisle United
followed by caretaker
spells at West Bromwich
Albion, England Under-
21s and Newcastle United.
Pearson was named
Southampton boss in
2008 but was soon on the
move again, joining
Leicester City.
A brief stay at Hull City
followed, but the former
defender was back with
the Foxes in 2011,
overseeing their rapid rise
from League One to the
Premier League.
Leading City to a famous
escape from relegation in
2014/15 was his final act.
He was replaced by
Claudio Ranieri and, well,
you know the rest…
Pearson then spent time
with Derby County, OH
Leuven and Watford
before taking charge of
the Robins.
The midfielder is no stranger to
the Football League with the
majority of his early career at
Leicester City played in tiers
two and three.
King was then a major part of
Leicester’s Premier League
to dwindle, and he headed out
on loan to Swansea City, Derby
County, Rangers and
Huddersfield Town prior to
linking up with Nigel Pearson
again at OH Leuven in 2020/21.
He’s now followed Pearson to
for the R’s in recent
years, with a number of
points for his respective
sides.
The Austria international
rose through the youth
ranks at Stadlau and Rapid
Wien, before making his
professional debut in the
Premier League with
Aston Villa. After five
years at Villa Park,
Weimann moved to Derby
County, notching just nine
times in 81 games.
A move to Bristol City in
2018 kickstarted his career
and Weimann became the
first Robins player to score
a hat-trick away from
home in the top two tiers
of English football since
1978 with a treble in a 3-2
win at Sheffield United in
A spell at Ipswich Town preceded a move to Bristol City in 2013
JET joined the R’s on a free transfer in June 2015 and bagged a
he left in 2018. Emmanuel-Thomas now plys his trade in the
THE ‘R’ GENERATION FANSITE WRITER PENS HIS LATEST
COLUMN FOR THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME…
T
hree friendlies, five league games and
two cup ties since the return of fans, and
Championship football’s relentless
calendar quickly became the norm again. Then,
just as we started getting comfortable, the
international break arrived to turn this on
its head.
It feels like club football (in its true form) was
absent for 14 months, came back for a few
minutes, then decided to go away again.
Somehow, after being treated to a month of
triumphant displays from QPR, a break of two
weeks started to feel every bit as long as the
lockdown era.
As we waited patiently for the team’s
return against Reading, QPR’s international
players did their best to make it an entertaining
couple of weeks - none more so than our
Scotstralian striker.
Lyndon Dykes’ goal against Coventry before the
international break, which turned a scrappy affair
into a comfortable victory, was frankly beautiful.
Whilst the two winners that he subsequently
netted for Scotland were comparatively less
attractive, they’re a perfect example of how
Dykes is continually the man who pops up at
the right place and the right time for both club
and country. When that’s the case, who cares
whether the goals are pretty?
With the addition of Ilias Chair’s first goal and
assist for Morocco whilst playing alongside
Adel Taarabt, it’s difficult to contend that the
international break has nothing to offer for QPR
fans. It’s also a plain fact that Euro 2020, which
provided a charcuterie board of tasty football
and moments of genuine pride in supporting
England, could not have happened without the
chance for managers to test and tweak their
squads at intervals during the club season.
So, the international break is actually brilliant,
definitely underrated, and everyone should love
it - except a trip down the M4 was enough to
remind us why the Championship is really what
it’s all about.
Notwithstanding the lexicological irony of the
Select Car Leasing Stadium being effectively
inaccessible by anything with four wheels, the
trip to Reading was good bang for your buck.
A full away end (and some), a late comeback,
a debut goal for Andre Gray… stand up if you
love Rangers.
Criticisms can be made of the performance and
were voiced by Mark Warburton, frustration at
being beaten by a long ball over the top, and a
periodic lack of attacking threat. Even so, it’s
difficult to give too much thought to that stuff
when it felt so good to be back again, yet again.
Unbeaten in six prior to Bournemouth, top
scorers in the division, and a clear idea of what
needs to improve... keep at it, Rangers - and next
time you have to take an international sojourn,
hurry back soon!
good touch, and he was a goalscorer.
But Bob was big, strong, and quicker.
On that day, Bob was fantastic. He was
just awesome. We had everything in
place with the defensive way we played
and the squeezing up. Both teams
displayed incredible hunger in the
semi-final. It probably wasn’t a great
exhibition of football but there was
some outstanding commitment. I
remember West Brom’s Andy King
broke his nose in the first half. I was
faced by two very experienced and
strong centre-halves. I’d played against
them on and off up until that point and
they always tried to hurt me by coming
through the back of me. In those days,
defenders would try to intimidate you
in the first 20 minutes. There was a lot
of violence out there on the pitch at
Highbury that day! I’ve spoken to West
Brom defender Brendon Batson
recently and he was saying that they
thought they were going to win by
playing football. But he also said that
they were surprised by the power, the
determination, and the aggression
that we matched them with. The
togetherness of the QPR players
shone through.
We had incredible support that day,
didn’t we?
What really made the occasion for me
was the sea of Rangers fans behind the
In those days, defenders would
try to intimidate you in the first
goal on the North Bank. The QPR
supporters and the West Brom fans
were tremendous. Then there were
unbelievable scenes afterwards. In the
dressing room at Highbury, you could
stand on a ledge and open a frosted
glass window to peer on to the street.
We got the window open and there
were about three of us with our heads
stuck out to look for our parents in the
crowd celebrating outside. I have a tear
in my eye thinking about it now!
On to the final, it was QPR versus
top-flight Tottenham. In those days,
the cup final was the biggest
occasion of the football season,
wasn’t it?
As a kid growing up, I had two
ambitions. One was to play for England
and the other was to play in an FA Cup
final. I went to watch the 1978 cup final
with a friend of mine when Ipswich
beat Arsenal 1-0. As a footballer, all the
preparation, media coverage and
interviews build from the moment you
win the semi-final. You do everything
differently and I’m not sure that’s a
good idea. You stay more often in
hotels, and you vary where you train.
You’re kept away a little bit from what
would be your normal routine. I don’t
think that helped us. In the week or
even the fortnight before the final, we
changed too many things. It felt like it
took a long time before the actual
game came around. If it was down to
me, I’d have kept everything normal in
the build-up by training at Greenford
as usual and not having everyone
together in hotels all the time doing
promotional stuff. I think that got in
the way of a better Rangers
HOOPS
We were a good enough side
to beat Spurs and we should
have won the replay
performance in the first match at
Wembley. I believe we were a good
enough side to beat Spurs and we
probably should have won the replay.
Everybody had a different view on it.
There were certain players like Terry
Fenwick and Gary Waddock that
probably revelled in the extra
preparation. However, I liked to do my
training, get away from the spotlight
and be at home so that I could take my
dog for a walk. But the FA Cup final is
what it is. I’d never done it before, and
I’ve never done it since so I can’t
compare it to anything else.
Glenn Hoddle gave Spurs the lead in
that first match before Fenwick
headed our equaliser after Hazell
nodded on your long throw from
the left…
We deserved it. The long throw was
something we worked on in training. I
have to say that Bob came up with a
back header that’s about as good as
you could possibly get. And Fen knew
he was going to score before he
headed it. Apart from that, it was a
very tight game with not a lot of
chances in it. We were playing
against tough people like Graham
Roberts, Steve Perryman and Paul
Miller who were around my spot on
the pitch. It was rough and
aggressive. They didn’t make it easy
for us. We tried to do the same thing
with their playmaker Hoddle by
denying him space on the ball. He
was a clever player. For us, if my
strike partner Clive Allen hadn’t got
injured early on then it might have
been a different story. Even so, it
HOOPS
almost felt like winning it on the
Saturday because we came from
behind to grab the equaliser. Towards
the end, I was basically receiving the
ball from our keeper Peter Hucker to
kill time so that we could get another
chance with a replay. I must have been
doing that thinking, ‘If we play them
again, we’ll beat them!’ Otherwise, I
wouldn’t have been winding the clock
down and I would have been saying to
myself, ‘We’ve got a goal back now.
Let’s get another.’ I probably felt
Tottenham were a bit better than us
on the day. Then that evening, we had
a banquet booked in a hotel which was
quite a celebration as we knew we had
another go at winning the cup. It was a
bit of a party. The next day - the
Sunday - we had to start preparing
ourselves for the replay. Again, that
was hard. We were in hotels and had
trips to training facilities. Nothing was
normal for us, and I found it difficult.
Even so, the replay came around really
quickly, and I don’t remember that
week dragging. Time flew by and I was
back into my stride when we returned
to the Wembley pitch.
That replay took place the following
Thursday evening when we did
everything but score in a 1-0
defeat…
We were unlucky. Gary Micklewhite had
a goal disallowed for us and it should
have counted. But we had other
chances. I hit a diagonal ball over the
last defender on the right-hand side
and John Gregory sidefooted a volley
right on to the crossbar. If that had
gone in, it would have been a great
goal. England keeper Ray Clemence
made a couple of superb saves for
them too. We gave Spurs a difficult
night. And don’t forget they were a
very good side. Steve Archibald and
Garth Crooks up front - that wasn’t
bad, was it? And any team that had
Hoddle in his pomp was going to be
difficult to play against. We did really
well over the two games, but the loss
was hard to take. After that, we were
more or less on a plane straight away
for an end-of-season trip to America.
We had the benefit in our squad of
having a lad called Steve Burke, who
was the funniest fella I’ve ever met. We
were in a departure suite at Heathrow
with a few drinks when Steve walked in
to do an hour’s comedy routine of
impersonating people and telling jokes.
By the time he’d finished, we’d
forgotten about the pain of losing the
final and we were off to America to
have a good time. Steve was a star
man for me because he got us all in a
better frame of mind.
FOUR second-half goals against Division
Three opponents Portsmouth gave Rangers a
comfortable lead to take into the return
fixture at Fratton Park.
On an evening of non-stop rain, the R’s forged
in front on 13 minutes. Man of the match Gary
Micklewhite sent over a cross, and Pompey’s
Peter Ellis turned the ball into his own net.
On the hour mark, Micklewhite played John
Gregory through for a smart finish. And Gregory
struck again four minutes later following good
work by midfield maestro Tony Currie.
Micklewhite produced two more neat strikes in
the 84th and 88th minutes to add gloss to
QPR’s victory and silence the Pompey Chimes.
Hoops boss Terry Venables said afterwards:
“With all the rain, there would have been a doubt
about staging this fixture in normal
circumstances on a grass pitch. As it was, our
new Omniturf plastic surface played excellently.
“We’ve given Gary Micklewhite the matchball.
He’s claiming that the first goal was down to
him and that means he got a hat-trick!”
In a Daily Mirror match report, Nigel Clarke
wrote: “One of the legacies [previous manager]
Tommy Docherty left behind at Loftus Road
won this second round, first-leg tie for Rangers.
“Gary Micklewhite, a free transfer snapped up
from Manchester United, scored twice and
made two of the goals.
“Micklewhite was on his way out of Rangers until
Terry Venables arrived, liked what he saw and
gave him his first match of the season last
week. And after a match of industry and
aggression [against Pompey] the 20-year-old
was presented with the matchball.”
PROGRAMME SNIPPETS: R’s secretary/
programme editor Ron Phillips wrote:
“Cup fixtures between ourselves and
Portsmouth are rare events - we never
seem to get drawn against these
particular opponents.
“We can, therefore, expect a more
interesting game than usual and, as
Portsmouth are currently going well in
their own division, we can expect a tough
fight on our hands - both today and at
Fratton Park on 27th October.
“Our installation of an artificial playing
surface at this stadium now presents us
with the opportunity to stage youth
matches here before the first team and
reserve games for the rest of the
season.
“Such youth fixtures will normally kick off
on Saturday mornings at 11.30am.
Prices of admission will be that
chargeable for the first team or reserves
game taking place that day and
spectators watching the youth fixture will
simply remain in their seats to see the
second match start at 3pm.”
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and
welcome to the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium for today’s
game against Bristol City.
City have enjoyed a decent start to the
season as I write prior to their midweek
game at home to Luton. They’ve won
twice on their travels already and have
a talented squad who will provide a
tough test for us to overcome. They
also have an excellent manager in Nigel
Pearson who I had the pleasure of playing
alongside at Sheffield Wednesday. Nigel
was a top player and a great guy to have
in your changing room and was always
destined to become a successful coach
and manager.
Since my last notes we gained three
valuable points against a very good
Coventry side who played well in the first
half. However, second-half goals from
Lyndon Dykes and Yoann Barbet got us a
good win that enabled us to go into the
international break still unbeaten.
After the break we made the short trip to
Reading and what a game we witnessed.
I felt we totally dominated the opening
half hour and were deservedly a goal
ahead. However, we got punished for
switching off defensively to go in level
at half-time which was disappointing
given our dominance in the opening 45.
The second half was a real roller coaster
of a game and emotions as we found
ourselves 3-1 down with 12 minutes to
go. It was great to see Andre Gray get
his first goal for us to set up an exciting
finish with captain Stefan Johansen
scoring an equaliser very late on. You
could see what that goal meant to the
players, bench and all our supporters
as it was a cue for great celebrations
together. Once again, the comeback
showed the belief, the character, and the
desire that’s within the group to go to the
end and everyone deserves great credit
for that.
We then went down to Bournemouth
on Tuesday evening to face another
unbeaten side. Bournemouth have a
very good squad full of quality, pace,
energy, and experience who I fully expect
to be there or thereabouts in terms of
promotion come the end of the season.
Our unbeaten start ended but we came
away with many positives from the game
and possibly could have got something
as the Bournemouth goalkeeper made
a number of saves as we pushed to get
back in it having been 2-0 down at halftime.
I think it shows how far we’ve come as
a team that we left the south coast
disappointed to lose against one of the
best sides in the division. I’m sure Mark
and the players will take the positives
from the game and look to bounce back
this afternoon to hopefully start another
unbeaten run.
As fans will know we launched our very
popular Forever R’s a few seasons ago
where we look to recognise and really
appreciate the contribution made by
former players, coaches, and managers
to our great club. Obviously due to the
pandemic and having no fans in the
stadiums we haven’t been able to do
any inductions over the past 18 months.
However, it’s something we’re looking
to restart soon. We’ve inducted more
than 100 former players in the past five
seasons which is something we’re very
proud of as a club. It’s you, the fans, that
make it so special with the support, love,
and appreciation you show when the
players and their families return to the
stadium. Thank you for that tremendous
backing.
Former players and their families are
always welcome at QPR, and we’ve had
many at games since fans were allowed
back. I just want to mention that today
we have a true QPR great and legend in
Phil Parkes at the match together with
family and friends. Phil was part of that
incredible team here in the 70s. What a
fantastic goalkeeper he was.
Phil has already been inducted into the
Forever R’s, but it will be great to see him
here once again and I’m sure he’ll get
a wonderful reception if we’re able to
introduce him on the pitch at half-time.
It was also great to catch up with Jamie
Mackie on the QPR Loftcast on Thursday.
Jamie served the club really well and is
very highly thought of at Rangers. We
discussed football in general, all things
QPR and his transition from player to
retirement which can be difficult, as I can
personally vouch for. Again, throughout
the season, The Loftcast will be looking
to have former players join us. With that
and Forever R’s, it just strengthens the
link with ex-players who’ve represented
this club so well.
Thank you as always for your wonderful
support. Enjoy the game.
Come on you R’s!
TONY INCENZO’S RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
NO COFFEE
OUR recent Carabao Cup victory over Oxford
brought back vivid memories of the horrific
1986 final when the competition was known as
the Milk Cup.
Rangers were abysmal on that Sunday afternoon
35 years ago at Wembley. Absolutely abysmal.
And Oxford deservedly beat us 3-0.
My preparation the night before consisted of a trip
to the West End. As was commonplace for me in
the 1980s, I spent my Saturday night with mates at
the Empire nightclub in Leicester Square.
And what was commonplace with the Empire
was that we always got chatting to members of
the opposite sex.
Indeed, my new-found lady friend on that
particular occasion was very friendly indeed.
When the club closed at 3am, she invited me
back to her place for what I will politely describe
as “a coffee”.
Under normal circumstances, I always accepted
such invitations with eager gratitude. But not
this time!
I proudly announced: “I’m extremely sorry
but I have to get up in the morning as I’m going
to Wembley to watch Queens Park Rangers win
the Milk Cup!”
I still remember the look of bemusement and
indignation on her face as she toddled off
towards the taxi rank.
Anyway, I made it to Wembley full of expectation.
I’d been in attendance when Rangers triumphed
at Chelsea in the last eight and I travelled by
special train up to Liverpool when we won the
semi-final.
But quite simply, our team failed to turn up for
the final. It’s one of the biggest disappointments
of my whole life.
In hindsight, maybe I should have swerved
Wembley and gone back for that coffee after all…
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
TWO guys stood in reception
at the Ealing Gazette offices.
With apologies to today’s
guests Bristol City, this was
all about west London rather
than anything linked to the
west country.
One of the pair was Ian Stewart
who had dazzled on the wing
as he helped Queens Park
Rangers into the top flight in
1982/83 (and might have a few
pointers for Mark Warburton’s
present Prem wannabes if
asked). Ian was an affable,
friendly guy who I’d got to
know through covering the R’s
and sharing a mutual passion
for music. Alongside him was
Paul Cook. Paul flipping Cook!
The famed drummer of the
Sex Pistols himself.
Cook and Pistols guitarist Steve
Jones had formed a band called
The Strand while at school
at Christopher Wren (now
Phoenix High) on the White
City Estate across the road
from Loftus Road; one which
morphed into the legendary
punk band with QPR supporter
Glen Matlock on bass (pre-Sid
Vicious) and, of course, Johnny
Rotten on vocals.
Northern Ireland international
Stewart instigated the two
getting together by asking to
meet Cook, an enthusiastic
amateur footballer and sports
fan, who agreed to see him.
Stewart thought I might be
interested in the fact ‘Cookie’
started to use a new snooker
club called the Starlite in
Rangers finish fifth on their
return to Division One, said:
“Paul told me he wasn’t too
good at snooker, but I think he
was telling me lies!”
But Cook, who, with Jones,
shared adventures with Great
Train robber Ronnie Biggs
in Brazil, played it down and
joked: “I don’t know about
147, more like seven!”
Rangers have a history of
attracting links with musicians.
Mick Jones, best known as
a guitarist with The Clash,
reportedly meeting future
bandmate Joe Strummer
in a Shepherd’s Bush squat,
has been a W12 spectator,
attending with Matlock.
Pete Doherty, leader of The
Libertines and Babyshambles
and known for dating model
Kate Moss, helped produce a
QPR fanzine growing up.
And Bruce Welch, guitarist
with the trail-blazing Shadows
in the late 1950s and early
1960s, has been another
noted follower of the Hoops.
Bill Bailey, the 2020 Strictly
Come Dancing winner and
comedian who has displayed
his prowess as a musician in
his stage act, is another.
To my knowledge, the
musician most loyal to Rangers
is Nick Saloman, who has
supported the club for half a
century, much of the time as a
season-ticket holder.
Saloman has been declared
a ‘cult guitar hero’ by the
estimable music magazine
Mojo while recording 25
albums as The Bevis Frond
(the latest, a double, called
Little Eden is more than worth
checking out).
And he told me a tale that
involved QPR and the late Kurt
Cobain, probably the last rock
legend for what he achieved in
the American band
Nirvana with Dave Grohl,
now leader of the Foo
Fighters, and Kris Novoselic.
Saloman was working
in London with fellow
singer-songwriter Mary Lou
Lord, a girlfriend of Cobain’s
until Courtney Love
happened along.
He suggested to Lord, who
also collaborated with the late
and fabled performer Elliott
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
Smith, they took a break to
attend an FA Cup tie against
Barnsley. It was January 1997
and would be his American
guest’s first experience of a
football match.
It coincided with a bid by
Rangers winger Trevor Sinclair,
who went on to Manchester
City and England, for
immortality in Shepherd’s Bush.
Rangers led 2-1 with
goals from John Spencer
and Gavin Peacock after
Neil Redfearn had put the
visitors ahead in front of
Barnsley-born TV presenter
and journalist Sir Michael
Parkinson when Sinclair
extended the lead with a goal
considered one of the best,
if not the best, seen at the
famous old stadium.
It won him the Match of the
Day ‘Goal of the Season’
accolade in a campaign David
Beckham scored from the
halfway line for Manchester
United at Wimbledon.
Sinclair, sporting dreadlocks,
was on the edge of the
penalty area and tightly
marked. But he launched
himself off the ground and
completed a bicycle kick
from a Spencer cross which
sped into the Barnsley goal at
seemingly the speed of light.
Saloman, along with the rest
of the Rangers’ faithful in
the 14,000 present, went
bananas. Lord turned to him
and said: “Hmmmm, not
bad.” Her escort’s knee-jerk
reaction: “Not f****** bad?!
That’s the best goal I’ve ever
f****** seen!”
Rangers went on to hit the
right note and win 3-2.
WOMEN
ALL CHANGE
It’s been a summer of change for QPR FC
Women, following last season’s promotion
to the FA Women’s National League
Division One South East
An exciting new partnership with
NNR Global Logistics was announced,
strengthening the R’s off the field before
it was announced that Hanwell Town’s
Powerday Stadium would host QPR
Women’s 2021/22 home fixtures.
Steve Quashie’s side also welcomed no less
than seven new arrivals to west London,
ensuring for plenty of strength in depth as
we approached the new season.
Rangers kicked things off with an emphatic
6-0 home victory over Stevenage Ladies,
with goals from Alice Curr, Sue Kumaning,
Danielle Maloney, Brogan Moore and a
double from Demi Edwards wrapping up a
comfortable afternoon for the R’s.
Quashie’s side then faced back-to-back
away trips, against Kent Football United and
Actonians respectively. Rangers won 3-1
against Kent, before a slim 1-0 defeat to our
local side at Rectory Park.
The R’s finished the opening month of their
campaign with a 3-1 home defeat to table
toppers Billericay Town. However, six points
from a possible 12 leaves the R’s in good
stead for what’s to come this year.
FOOTBALL CLUBS TEAM UP TO SAY
‘THANK YOU NHS’
NHS HOSPITALS FROM
PARTNERED UP WITH SOME
OF THE CAPITAL’S FOOTBALL
CLUBS TO TAKE PART IN A
SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT
AS A THANK YOU FOR
THEIR AMAZING WORK
THROUGHOUT THE COVID
PANDEMIC.
To show their support and gratitude to NHS
staff, football charity London United, 14 football
club community organisations from the capital
- including QPR in the Community Trust - and
the 11 Foundation (set up by former professional
footballer Joe Cole and his wife Carly) joined
forces to organise the tournament.
The unique event at Gunnersbury Park on Sunday
5th September saw teams battling it out for the
United for NHS in London trophy.
The R’s, who were represented by a team from the
North Hammersmith and Fulham Primary Care
Network, reached the knock-out stages where
they were defeated by local rivals Brentford.
Cole said: “The NHS is a beacon for our country,
and Carly and I feel proud to help in any small way.
“The 11 Foundation and football clubs across
London are united in wanting to recognise the
sacrifices made by our NHS staff in the most
challenging of circumstances.
“We’ve been inspired by the bravery and spirit
of NHS staff throughout the pandemic and this
initiative was a brilliant way to use the power
of the football to celebrate NHS staff and
champion the vital role our hospitals play in every
community across the capital.”
HOOPS
Columnist
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
A
great day was had by all at Reading.
Royals captain Liam Moore kindly gave
me his executive box for the afternoon,
which allowed me to avoid the scramble for
tickets in the week leading up to the game.
The pork carvery was so good I actually missed
QPR’s opening goal. Luckily for me, that was
merely the start of the day’s entertainment.
I never felt we were down and out even when
Reading edged 3-1 ahead through John Swift’s
fine hat-trick.
I exchanged brief messages with Liam on
the Sunday. I interviewed him when he was at
Leicester and a few years ago before a TV game
for Reading. We’ve stayed in touch.
The picture is myself, two family members and my
former Sky colleague Dean Spencer in Box 24.
Regular readers will have recalled that I had
a large framed print of Gary Bannister, Roy
Wegerle and Les Ferdinand hung on my games
room wall this summer.
I had a strange request this week when respected
Manchester United journalist Andy Mitten
contacted me and asked if he could send a picture
of it to a friend of Gary’s brother.
Andy lives in Barcelona and apparently met
this guy at an airport somewhere. I hope Gary
doesn’t think I’m weird in any way.
Anyway, I’m about to depart with Dean down
to Bournemouth. Stefan Johansen hinted after
Reading that this may well be our toughest test
yet. I’ve been given tickets by former Cherries
captain Simon Francis. Hopefully by the time you
read this, we’ll have added another three points
to our tally.
