Very Successful 2021 Season for
Boys’Hockey1st XI
ManagerJasonVannini outlines the seasonfor us,saying they had fivenew
faces in the squad of sixteen this year, with only oneYear 13 student, but a
solid group of Year 12 students andsomeverypromising Year 11 players.
New coach, Ryan Hampton, who most recently captained the College
team in 2014, had the team responding very well to his enthusiasm and
obvious skill as acoach, and the team prepared themselves for another
season playing in Christchurch on Fridaynights.
Results in Christchurch SecondarySchool League,Division 1
These made forimpressivereading,overtwo rounds.
Round 1
Christ’s College 2nd XI (1-all draw); St Bede’s College 2nd X1 (4-1); St Andrew’s
College 2nd XI (2-0 ); CashmereHigh School 1st XI (3-0); Christchurch Boys’
six Year 12 and 13 students, soadrawwas agreat result.
St Andrew’s College 2nd XI (2-2); Cashmere High School 1st XI (5-0). There
wassomesatisfaction in beating Cashmere’s1st XI twiceinthe same year,as
they normally beatCollege in Christchurch and then at Winter Tournament
Week!!
In the game against Christchurch Boys’High School 2nd XI the score was
reversed to (2-1) from the scorefromthe first game in this, the last game of
the round beforethe final.
Round Robin Position –Second Placed on Table
AshColl finished second on the table as aresult of having only one loss, but
toomanydraws!
Then lockdown intervened, with the thought that the competition may
not come through to finals play-offs. However, Christchurch Hockey came
through with aLevel 2date.
Inter-School Sports Exchange Outcomes
Against Burnside High School 1st XI
Burnside playinthe Premier SecondarySchools’grade, and arealways very
strong.AshColl wasat1–1 at three-quartertimeand they scored late in the
last quartertogiveCollege a2–1 defeat.
This was avery close game and our team really lifted toplay attheir level,
so even though it resulted in aloss it wasthe closest game against them for
anumber of years.
Against RangioraHigh School
This exchange was played inAshburton also, with great support from
parents and other teams. College started well and ended up dominating
much of the matchtorecorda5–0 victory.
By this stage of the season progress being made with skills and structures
wasevident, makingthis averygood victory.
Winfor College in the SecondarySchoolLeague,Division 1
Final,against Christchurch Boys’High School 2nd XI
This was always going to be aclose game with the best two teams inthe
grade both having a2-1 victoryand 2-1 loss to each other in pool play.
This game was played atNgā Puna Wai Turf 1and was streamed live on
Youtube.
Allowed were forty spectators, with College having thirty eight parents
and supporters make the trip up from Ashburton. There was time for two
practices beforethe match.
Congratulations
College startedwell and gained apenaltycorner aftertwo minutes. This was
convertedwith asweet shot by Hamish O’Reilly into the back of the net for
a 1–0 scoreline at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter a great through ball from Henry Wallis found
HenryThomas in spaceonthe rightwing.Heput the ball across the frontof
goal and NicStringer turned it in at the back
post fora2-1 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter Boys’ High got agoal
back halfway through, to set up for atense
final quarter.
Both sides had chances in the final quarter
and Boys’ High had a penalty corner with
WintoCollege.
(Pictured below): NicStringer (Number 4) scoring College’s second goal.
Team Composition
The team was captained this year by Dante Vannini, our sole Year 13
representative. He played at striker and also led the defensive ‘press’,
where you prevent the opposition clearing the ball from their end. The
commentators in the finalnoted thatour press wasthe best in thegrade.
In the midfield, Harry Soal and Hamish O’Reilly held possession and
stopped the opposition coming through the middle and TomRosevear
defended well and put some great balls forward for the strikers. Atstriker,
Cole Aitken used his speed to greateffect, and RileyHarris hadanexcellent
seasonafter having his 2020 season ruined by injury.
(Pictured above): Harry Soal taking ashot at goal.
Henry Wallis led the backs and was ably assisted by
SamOrr, who made greatstrides in his reading of the game and positioning
to keep the opposing strikers at bay.
Archie Glanville had another great year in goal and only conceded 12
goals in 13 games, giving College agreat opportunity towin every game
we played.
