Margaret’s netball coaching success<br />

As anetball coach Margaret<br />

Butler gets abuzz from seeing<br />

players’ confidence and skills<br />

develop. It’s why she does what<br />

she does.<br />

Shehas been coachingoff<br />

and on for the past <strong>30</strong> years, but<br />

has recently taken her netball<br />

coaching up afew notches,<br />

completing both her community<br />

coach award (CCA) levels 1and<br />

2onthe Netball NZ coaching<br />

pathway.<br />

Theawardsare aseries of<br />

online and practical modules to<br />

help coaches develop players at<br />

the community level.<br />

Attaining award level 2isa<br />

pre­requisite for the<br />

PerformanceCoach<br />

Qualification (PCQ), thenext<br />

levelonthe national coaching<br />

pathway.<br />

Margaret began hercourses<br />

in 2019 to gain more ideas for<br />

her coaching. Initially she’d<br />

planned to complete all of the<br />

courses by the end of the2020<br />

season, but covid disrupted<br />

those plans and she completed<br />

thefinaltwo coursesthisyear.<br />

The biggest highlights for her<br />

as acoach were seeingthe<br />

players youwereworkingwith<br />

develop their skills,she said.<br />

“I love seeingplayers’<br />

confidence and skills grow<br />

throughout theseason.Ialso<br />

love seeing ateam begin the<br />

season without really knowing<br />

each other, andending the<br />

season as onetight unitwho<br />

worktogether to achieve<br />

common goals.”<br />

The Netball NZ pathway had<br />

helped her on her netball<br />

coaching journey, she said.<br />

“The pathwayhas meant that<br />

Ihavemet new people from<br />

throughout Canterbury,other<br />

coaches, and beenable to<br />

discuss coaching ideas with<br />

them.<br />

“It has also given memany<br />

resourcestodrawonfor<br />

developing my players. The<br />

resourceshave beenahuge<br />

help for skills and drills to try<br />

with my teams, as wellas<br />

recording sheets andstats.<br />

“Ithas alsobeengreat to<br />

workalongsideother coaches<br />

withinMid Canterbury, and<br />

having alocal coach developer<br />

alwaysonthe hunt for more<br />

coaches and MidCanterbury<br />

Netball provides coaching<br />

courses and resources for all<br />

coaches at FutureFerns(Year<br />

3­4 andYear 5­6) level.<br />

Margaret’s coaching journey<br />

beganasateenager living in<br />

Dunedin, working with age<br />

groupteams, andalthough she<br />

stopped coachingwhen she<br />

wenttouniversity, she<br />

continued to play and later<br />

picked up coaching again.<br />

“I began coachingagain when<br />

Istarted teaching, andcoached<br />

3­4 school teams each year as<br />

we couldn't source coaches for<br />

theschool Iwas working in.<br />

“WhenImoved to <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Istopped coaching as Ihad a<br />

newbaby and wanted to focus<br />

on being amum. Igot back into<br />

coaching in <strong>Ashburton</strong>about<br />

eight or nine years ago when my<br />

daughter (Gianna)started<br />

playing netball.”<br />

She coachedGianna’s teams<br />

through the agegroups.<br />

“My goal has alwaysbeen to<br />

move into coaching apremier<br />

team, andthisyear Imoved to<br />

United in order to achieve<br />

this,” she said.<br />

Heraim was to continue<br />

coaching in premier grades,<br />

ultimately into premier 1, and<br />

pick up more representative<br />

coaching.<br />

She coachedone of Mid<br />

Canterbury’s U16 teams this<br />

year and was keen to coach<br />

more rep teamsinthe future.<br />
