The community will be encouraged and assisted to do right by the environment by reusingold tshirts to make bags, swap and share seedsand repair clothing that might otherwise be thrownaway. Environment educatorLesleyOttey, who is contracted to run Ashburton District Council’s water and waste education contract, says there is nothing more satisfyingthan diverting items from landfill and also growingyour fruit and vegetables. Grantsare to help clear flood debris from farm paddocks,such as shingle, boulders, trees, and silt, enabling landtobebrought back into production as quickly as possible. The fund means that MPI will contribute up to half of the cleanup cost for uninsurable works. It’s important to note that industry representative bodies(Beef +Lamb, DairyNZ, Federated Farmers and Deer Industry NZ) helped set the criteria for the fund focusing on greatest need, and how the funding could havethe greatest impact. Grant applicationsare being considered by an independent panel made up of people with knowledgeof farming and our local Ashburton October 14, 15, 18, 19, 20 communities. Sector groups and localMayors helpedto select the panel members. They’re localexpertsand community leaders who will helpensureafair and equitable distribution of funds. At thisstage, 82 farmers and growers havebeen offered agrant for cleanup costs. About 50 applications are pending, with these either withthe panel for assessment, or backwith the applicant to providefurther information. 38 applications did not meet the criteria. Fourhave come backwith additionalinformation currentlybeing considered by the panel. Once grants are GREAT RATES confirmed, these will be paid out after the work has been completed.
