SUMMER 2021 PREVIEW
You look at a picture,
such as this invitingly
groomed piste, and
think: This is how it
should be – the sun is shining,
the fresh snow gently lines the
edge of the piste, the pointed
peaks are lined up on the horizon.
And there are probably
very few winter athletes who
wouldn’t wish for this descent.
The southernmost valley in
Vorarlberg is famous for it. But
the Montafon winter offers
much more than “just” enjoyable
swoops down the pistes.
Beautiful toboggan runs and an
enjoyable picnic snowshoe hike
make for special winter experiences.
Or you can take your first
steps on touring skis during the
ski touring try-out-day. The possibilities
are endless and always
involve personal encounters.
Because with its people, villages
and cultural heritage, the Montafon
promises one thing above all
else: to be real. Really personal,
in fact.

in the Montafon
19. – 21. February 2021
The bonfire is one of the oldest
traditions in the valley. On the
first Sunday after Fasching
(Carnival), an artistically layered
wooden tower of up to 30 metres
in height is set alight after dusk.
MOUNTAIN CULTURE –
AN ALPINE VALLEY FULL
OF TRADITIONS
Whether consciously or subconsciously, you
are sure to encounter one or two Montafon
specialities during your time here. Perhaps
it will be the Montafon Sura Kees, which
is served at breakfast. Perhaps you will see
women in the Montafon festival costume in
front of church on a Sunday. Or maybe you’ll
hike past the grazing meadows of the Montafon
Steinschaf (stone sheep), a very special
breed of animal.
The historic costume of the Montafon’s
residents has its origins in the Baroque
period
In June, the entire valley celebrates the
longest day of the year with impressive
solstice bonfires
The Alpine pasture landscapes in the
Montafon are virtually unique throughout
the Alps
Committed breeders ensure the continued
existence of the rare Montafon
In summer, 12 Alpine dairy farms produce
the traditional Montafon Sura Kees
cheese with love and care
The burning of the spark is an ancient
spring custom dating back to pre-Christian
times
SKIING & SNOWBOARDING
298 superbly prepared kilometres of pistes
await you in the Montafon and ensure
incomparable variety. Skiers and snowboarders
can find just what they’re looking
for, from easy slopes to steep racing
pistes. Families have a particularly good
time on the many blue pistes, while racers
explore the black runs.
SNOWSHOE HIKING
Snowshoes are a wonderful invention:
They allow winter hikers to reach destinations
that are difficult to reach on foot or
on skis – it would require far too much effort
on foot and skiing is virtually impossible
there. Such as in forests with heavy
snow, whose wintry secrets are explained
to you on various tours by the Montafon
hiking guides.
THE NEW VALLEY RUN IN GASCHURN
The community of Gaschurn and
the Silvretta Montafon tried
for almost 30 years to establish
a snow-covered downhill run.
The desired extension to the existing ski
run to create snow-covered Slope 60 finally
came to pass in summer 2020. It leads from
the Versettla Bahn summit station past the
middle station and to the valley station in
Gaschurn.
Not only are the waiting times at the middle
station of the Versettla Bahn a thing of
the past during the descent, but the new
piste is also an attractive bad weather option
due to its routing. Thanks to the forest,
the route is protected from the weather and
is also accessible when wind and weather
further up the mountain don’t play along.
The new piste has the clear aim of revitalising
the catering and accommodation facilities on
the valley run and in the whole of Gaschurn –
and perhaps even creating new ones. A pleasant
side effect: “Ski In – Ski Out”, i.e. strapping
on your skis or snowboard directly in front of
your accommodation is now possible for all
guests at the Gundalatscher Berg. This in turn
leads to a reduction in traffic, as winter sports
enthusiasts no longer need a car.
12 13
STOPOVER
With outstanding food and good music,
the new stopover at the old base station lets
you end a great day of skiing on a high note
– at the eight-metre-long Vallüla Bar or out
on the sun deck. P
PREMIUM BASIS
A
unique ski tour between Austria and Switzerland, where
you can even travel on the Rhaetian Railway: this is the
Madrisa circuit. Skiers in good physical condition Premium appreciate
the offer, as Hanno Dönz knows: “The ratio between
8/35/83/17
ascent and descent is very good. With an ascent of almost 350 metres,
we can enjoy around 2,500 metres of descents including over
2,000 metres of off-piste,” says the state-certified mountain and ski
guide. The tour also gives participants the opportunity to observe
ibexes, chamois and eagles in their natural habitat. With noticeable
enthusiasm, Hanno tells us about this skiing day and goes through
the tour for us chronologically.
8:15 AM, SCHAFBERGBAHN
VALLEY STATION
The group of a maximum six participants
gets to know each other. I check the equipment
before we go up the mountain together.
At the top we continue to the Kristallbahn
for one or two test and observation
runs. This way, I can get an exact idea of
the skiing skills of each individual. Then it’s
down into the valley. There we pull on our
skins and I give tips on walking techniques.
The ascent can begin.
10:20 AM, ST. ANTÖNIER JOCH
We cross the border into the neighbouring
country. The clear view to the Western
Alps and down to St. Antönien almost always
gets a resounding “Ooooh” from the
guests. Time for a break with snacks and
especially drinks. While we stow our skins,
I talk about earlier times, when smugglers
and refugees were still on the move in this
area. What many people don’t know is that
until the 1990s, there were still regular border
controls on both sides.”
11:30 AM, ST. ANTÖNIEN
With a long descent in open terrain behind
us, the mood is correspondingly relaxed.
Now we continue by post bus or taxi before
we take the famous Rhaetian Railway. Two
train lines are even listed as UNESCO
World Heritage Sites. Crossing the border
comes as a bit of a shock: many participants
hardly understand a word the locals are
saying. By the way, train rides are common
during a day of skiing in Switzerland, but
not in Austria. F
MADRISA CIRCUIT
12:30 PM, KLOSTERS TRAIN STATION
Some participants are quite laid back during the
trip to Klosters on the Rhaetian Railway. Others
talk cheerfully, ask me about all sorts of things
or swap information with each other. We return to
the ski area on the Madrisa cable car. The practical
aspect: our Montafon ski passes are also valid here.
1:20 PM, MADRISA LIFT SUMMIT STATION
Arrival at the highest point of the tour at 2,600
metres above sea level. We often take a group
photo here. But actually everyone wants to get
away from the piste and the lift again. Everyone’s
eager for the next descent.
2:30 PM, SCHLAPPINER JOCH
Our last ascent of the day only involves about
100 vertical metres. The route runs exclusively
along the south side. So it can get correspondingly
warm. We always keep the avalanche danger in
mind. The important thing is not to just blindly
follow the existing tracks but to find a good route
ourselves and keep a safe distance apart. Through
the Valzifenz valley, after another descent of 500
vertical metres, we reach Vergalden and thus “back
to civilisation” and the starting point of the tour.
3:00 PM, STOP FOR REFRESHMENTS
The skiing day is over and there’s usually a stop
for refreshments. We go through our intense
impressions at the same time. Some people may
have overestimated their powers of endurance a
little and are now really pooped. But most of them
are happy, and pleased with the way the day went.
You see many of them again on another tour within
the next year. P

aspect,” says BergAktiv hiking guide Romy
Pichler. She accompanies the groups in alternation
with Christl Tschuggmel. F
PICNIC SNOWSHOE HIKE
TIME TO SLOW DOWN AND RELAX
On their way through the forest, aside from
the crunching of the snow beneath their
tranquillity and silence. Only a few
animal tracks left by the forest dwellers can
be made out in the deep snow.
Once they arrive at the viewpoint, the snowshoe
hikers are already looking forward to
their well-deserved snack. And for them to
enjoy it properly, a table and bench are quickly
carved out using shovels. Heavy work
with a rumbling stomach? Not at all, says
Romy, “It’s something quite special for the
TOBOGGANING IN THE MONTAFON
A CONVERSATION WITH
MANFRED, HOST OF
THE LINDAUER HÜTTE
WHO IS MANFRED SPRUNG?
Oh, that’s a long story. Originally I did
an apprenticeship in catering and also
worked in that sector. However, after
starting a family and building a house in
Schruns, we both left the catering business.
I then worked for 14 summers in
wild river and avalanche control and as a
mountain guide. For 14 winters, I was a
ski and snowboard instructor and blasting
expert. I was also in mountain rescue for
15 years. Then I spent six years as a product
developer at Silvretta Montafon. And
now, since October 2019, I’ve been the
new host of the Lindauer Hütte.
HOW AND WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
My wife and I have always dreamed of
running a chalet. And all of a sudden
the Lindauer Hütte came up, at just the
right time. We seized the opportunity
and are happy.
HOW IS LIFE
AT THE LINDAUER HÜTTE?
Exhausting, but fulfilling. Actually, we
work around the clock. We have a shelter
chalet with 200 beds, a restaurant, an
alpine garden in summer and toboggan
rental in winter, plus all the work that goes
on around the house. The job has so many
aspects! From bookings and cancellations,
service, food, rubbish collection, material
transport to preparing the toboggan run –
everything in fact.
AND YET I HEAR
HAPPINESS IN YOUR VOICE?
Yes, definitely. The guests on the mountain
are so relaxed and friendly, the scenery is
breathtaking and when the regulars’ table
in front of the tiled stove that we’ve reintroduced
is full, all’s well with the world.

TOBOGGANING IN GAUERTAL
A special natural toboggan run leads from
the Lindauer Hütte to Latschau. At 6.5
kilometres in length and superbly prepared,
it is suitable for young and old alike.
What’s the first special feature? You’d have
to say the descent. It takes a leisurely twoand-a-half
hours or so on foot reach the
Lindauer Hütte. At 1,744 metres above sea
level and surrounded by the Sulzfluh, the
Drei Türme and the Drusenfluh, it stands
on a rocky crag and offers a magnificent
view. And the next special thing? Hungry
tobogganers are served regional delicacies
in the Lindauer Hütte, where the homely
atmosphere quickly thaws cold fingers
and noses. And another plus point? The
host Manfred Sprung has 60 luges in
stock, ready to rent to tobogganing fans.
And then we’re off. The descent is very
fast and takes about 30 minutes. Those
who prefer a more comfortable ride or
are out with children can toboggan for
about an hour. The toboggan ride takes
you through forests, wide clearings and
over small wooden bridges, past gnarled
old trees and groups of corn stalks to the
final tobogganing meeting point. The toboggans
can be conveniently dropped off
here. Manfred Sprung collects his toboggans
regularly.
The conclusion? A toboggan run is an
experience that not only makes children’s
hearts beat faster but also brings back
long-forgotten feelings of childhood for
the grown-ups. P

To experience a day together in the Montafon mountains
with my Instagram followers has long been a major goal of
mine. What could be better than a ski touring try-out-day
with mountain guide Lukas on the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe.
So the idea was born and at the beginning of March, the time finally
came. Our day started in Partenen. Admittedly, I was a little nervous,
because I didn’t know exactly what to expect. For me, it’s always very
exciting to see who I’ve got in front of me. A step into the unknown.
You usually know a lot about me, but I know nothing about you.
But when I entered the ski rental I immediately realised: this will
be a wonderful day with lots of “Muntafu”, lots of laughs and hospitality.
The fitting and adjustment of the ski touring equipment provided
to each participant was already in full swing and was carried
out with lots of fun and energy by the team at Sport Stöckl. Touring
ski boot buckles clicked, bindings were adjusted, suitable skis were
selected, the probe, shovel and avalanche transceiver were stowed
away in backpacks – equipment and people were becoming one.
Excitement and joy were in the air. I introduced everyone to Lukas,
our mountain guide, and with bag and baggage we finally set off for
the Vermuntbahn. F
SKI TOURING TRY-OUT-DAY
ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY
At the top we took the adventurous tunnel bus to the Madlenerhaus
on the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe. For me, it’s always like a gateway
to another world. You get on board, it gets pitch dark, the little bus
whistles around the curves, past rock faces and dimly lit protrusions
until bright light greets us at the end of the tunnel. “Grüaß
Di” to the Montafon snow paradise at 2,032 metres! A deeply
snow-covered landscape, the impressive dam and the rocky mountains
welcome us. It wasn’t perfect weather but it almost made the
mountain scenery look even more impressive.
We gathered in front of the Madlenerhaus and got going.
Lukas, a mountain guide with heart and soul, started by explaining
the subject of planning a ski tour. From the avalanche report to the
risk check in open terrain. For most people, these were completely
new impressions and everyone listened attentively. The fresh cold
mountain air whistled lightly around our ears and every now and
then a small white flake whirled past us.
From listening and planning, we quickly moved on to action. The
avalanche equipment was checked and tested. Then it was “three,
two, one, go” and we practised the emergency. Everyone was
focused and practised the procedure step by step several times.
From the reporting of the avalanche to digging people out. With
all the adrenaline and the bustle around us, we almost forgot the
time. It was time to take a break and have lunch. We were expected
at the Madlenerhaus and enjoyed some sensationally good
Montafoner Keesknöpfli with nine different kinds of cheese. We’d
earned them, after all!
32
THE FIRST STEPS
After lunch, warmed and fortified, we went back into the fresh
mountain air and finally onto the touring skis. Lukas explained
and showed us how to get started with the different bindings
and how to use our touring skis. The running function, the correct
securing of the binding for the descent and the adjustment
of the poles.
It soon became clear to the participants that skiing on touring skis
is quite different from skiing on normal skis. Still a little shaky, we
went to the first, easy descent. Between low hillocks and arolla
pines along a small stream into the surrounding terrain. Until the
first uphill stretches when the skins came out. Unpack the skins,
put them on, set the boots to walking mode, change the binding
and off we went. The first steps on touring skis. The loud laughter
and giggling could not be missed and everyone had a good time.
Through the hilly landscape we went towards the dam, past the
ice climbing garden and the first few metres uphill.
After the first few hundred metres, it was time for the “king’s
discipline”: making hairpin bends. The first shaky attempts were
not easy, but after a while everyone finally mastered it. Once at the
dam, we were rewarded with a view of the impressive turquoise
blue Silvretta reservoir. We finished off with a last powdery descent
past a chapel and we all arrived at the Madlenerhaus healthy
and happy, and with a grin on our faces. A wonderful day in the
fresh air came to an end and the participants had their first successful
attempt at ski touring tucked away in their backpacks.
Since last winter, the Hochjoch in
the Silvretta Montafon has offered
a new central gathering place for
freeriders and fans of deep snow.
Simon Wohlgenannt (36) is the founder and
operator of the Freeride Station. The former
freeride professional sums up his concept
in three words: ride, connect, learn. “We’re
geared towards all those who love riding in
deep snow with a passion, from beginners
to pros. With or without an ascent, specially
suited offers and mountain experiences can be
booked by anyone,” says Simon. Equally important
is the opportunity to meet like-minded
people on site (“connect”) and, last but not
least, to get reliable, up-to-date information,
such as the avalanche danger level. F
Safety first: the Freeride Safety
Area at the Grasjoch Bahn summit
station is used to check avalanche
transceivers. “And on our permanent
avalanche transceiver training
field, participants can improve their
skills in case of an emergency.” For
all those who enjoy off-piste skiing,
there is a mountain experience for
freeride beginners once a week. They
learn and practise the basics of skiing
technique to be able to ski off-piste
with skill and fun. Advanced freeriders
book the freeride adventure day,
while even sportier candidates book
special three-day camps.

CAPTIVATING LANDSCAPES
The entire Silvretta Montafon, including the
“Nova” area, is well known on the freeriding
scene. Professionals love the varied terrain,
which ranges from easy to steep slopes. The
ski area cuts a fine figure as well on Instagram
– no wonder with this panorama.
SNOW SURE HOCHJOCH
Simon Wohlgenannt feels very comfortable on
the Hochjoch: “Together with the Grasjoch,
it’s a super playground for short and exciting
freeride runs. It often snows a few centimetres
more here than elsewhere. It is also fairly well
protected from the wind, and the Zamangspitze
is simply a great ascent with plenty of options
for the descent. It’s this combination that
makes it special.” On freeriding and skiing in
general, he appreciates the experience of nature,
which can change daily depending on the
snow conditions: “One day this line is perfect
and just one day later another one is. You never
get bored because there’s always something
new to discover.” F
One or two motivated friends, a little fresh snow and
favourable avalanche conditions. We start in the
morning with two or three cool runs in the Silvretta
THE MONTAFON DIALECT
THE MONTAFON DIALECT – A UNESCO CULTURAL HERITAGE
GUATA MARGAT,
(GOOD MORNING, HOW CAN I HELP YOU?)
KA-N-I DR HELFA?
A dialect consists of many layers of language. And
the Montafon dialect of quite a few. And all these linguistic
influences have left relic words that make the Montafon
dialect something special. But what is really behind
words like Mara, Dörgütsch and Heem? Where do they
come from and why is a living dialect so important?
42
43
Hennatschätter
Goshawk
THE DIALECT
WITH SPECIAL FEATURES
Mara, Heem or etschas. Dialect expert Franz
Rüdisser explains why Montafon dialect
sounds so completely different. This is due
to the fact that the dialect is characterised by
many pure and clear vowels and that hardly
any double or triple sounds are used. In addition,
words that are left over from Romansh
are emphasised on the second or last syllable.
Of course, there are also some linguistic nuances
within the Montafon dialect. And the
people of the Montafon attach great importance
to their linguistic differences, which
can be clearly heard among the inhabitants
of the “Innerfratte” (St. Gallenkirch with
Gargellen and Gortipohl, Gaschurn-Partenen)
and the “Außerfratte” (Schruns-Tschagguns,
Bartholomäberg, Silbertal, Vandans,
St. Anton). Franz arranges events and brief
“language courses in Muntafunerisch” for
newcomers and anyone else interested. It is
important for him to keep the dialect alive
and to pass on this special cultural legacy.
A DIALECT AS
UNESCO CULTURAL HERITAGE
In 2017, the Austrian UNESCO Commission
declared the Montafon dialect a valuable
intangible cultural heritage. Why? Michael
Kasper, the director of the Montafon museums
explains: “In addition to its unusual
history and pronunciation, the dialect in
the Montafon has a very clear meaning for
the identity of the locals. It is cultivated,
researched and, above all, lived. This was
particularly emphasised by UNESCO. There
are countless poems and stories written
in the dialect. Modern music groups like
Krauthobel or Barfuaß ida Söck sing highly
successful dialect songs. Events, projects
and collaborations with schools, children
and young adults, and language courses for
refugees bring the Muntafunerisch language
closer to everyone. In short, the people of
the Montafon are proud of their dialect and
want to continue speaking it. And that’s been
rewarded. F
Quattapätsch
Alpine salamander
(in Romansch: quator = four,
pédes= feet)
And anyone wanting to delve
deeper into the Montafon dialect
will greatly enjoy the song
“Muntafu – mi Dahem bischt Du”
(at montafon.at/musik) and the
following text:
“MUNTAFUNER WART”
IN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE
Happily, we seldom have
Brenta (fog) in the Montafon.
Fifarlat means that very fine snow is
falling. But bischat means that not
only are there bigger flakes but that
the Loft (wind) is driving the snow
in front of it. In this case, you’d better
stay indoors with a good
Marend (snack).
If dr Loft subsides, the high Bischana
(snowdrifts) are sometimes a sign of
a windy night. When a strong wind
blows behind the ridges,
Geewinda (snow plumes) can be seen
from the valley. But it’s all over again
until Langsa (spring).
FAVOURITE DIALECT WORDS
MONTAFONERS TELL
Bifôldera
It’s not hard to guess where the word comes from and
that it means “having two wings”. I find Bifôldera
(butterfly) much more appropriate than Schmetterling (literally,
little smasher). What is being smashed? Bifôldera is much
gentler and softer and is more suitable for such a graceful,
beautiful insect. Roland Haas
An Ei ifella
Fry an egg. I love it because you have to pronounce it exactly
and my granddad always said it. Sabine Grohs
Pfulfa
The cushion “of am warma Kuschbank” (on the oven bench)
brings comfort in winter. Most Montafoners have their
“favourite Pfulfa”. Georg Stampfer
Klöberli
When I visit my dad and ask him “wia goht’s dr, Schatzi?”, he
usually says “joooo, so klöberli – wäsch eh”. That’s why my favourite
word is “klöberli” (in this context, sort of “fine”), because
I love this moment so much. Christine Versell
Moramenta
For me, not only is the word unique and beautiful but so is the
story behind it. In addition, for me the marmot – just like the
mountains – belongs to the Montafon and therefore to our beloved
homeland. Magdalena Maier P
This is how the words are pronounced.

(WELCOME TO THE MONTAFON)
Allow us to introduce ourselves briefly:
Those of us who live in the Montafon are generally
straightforward and appreciative of every single
guest. We are true to ourselves and live out our
fundamental beliefs.
That’s what real closeness is. That’s what defines
personal relationships in the Montafon. A symbolic
sign of this is the informal yet respectful
form of address (DU), which is keenly adopted
by many people.
