Wednesday October 6 2021 Bay Harbour News Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Call to remove boneseed • By Samantha Mythen A REDCLIFFS resident is on a mission to rid the Port Hills of a noxious weed, allowing native plants to thrive in its place. Sue Cooke is hoping to raise awareness about a yellow flowering plant called boneseed and encourage Sue Cooke residents to remove it from their properties. She is involved with the “re-greening” Barnett Park group. “We want to remove as much bone seed as possible in the area to allow the native flora and fauna to flourish, and to especially bring back the birds,” she said. The city council and Department of Conservation have been trying to control boneseed in the area for many years. However, the city council was prevented from working in the park after it was closed following the February 22, 2011 earthquake. As a result, Cooke said: “The boneseed, which was largely under control, has gone rampant, and now covers much of the reserve.” “If left unchecked for another five years, it will form a complete cover of the whole area, killing all native vegetation and preventing regeneration, which would otherwise occur quite successfully.” Boneseed is an introduced species and can produce up to 50,000 seeds a year. COLOURFUL PEST: Redcliffs resident Sue Cooke is encouraging people to remove a noxious weed seen all over the Port Hills. “Not many people know but it is a noxious and vivacious weed,” she said. Working bees are being held over the coming two months to tackle the bone seed epidemic in Barnett Park but Cooke wants to encourage people to remove the plant wherever they see it. “Now is the perfect time to get rid of the bone seed plants as you are more aware of it and can see it easily as it is flowering at the moment, just before it seeds and spreads,” she said. Boneseed can be controlled by cutting the stem near the ground and pasting the stump with a suitable herbicide gel and small seedlings can be pulled from the ground. NEWS 11 Plan to start jetty rebuild next year • By Samantha Mythen THE GOVERNORS Bay Jetty Restoration Trust’s new chairwoman is confident work will start next year to rebuild the quake-damaged structure. Miller, a “parttime construction lawyer and fulltime mum,” has lived in Governors Bay since 2015. The Miller family previously lived in Dongguan, China, a “small-town of nine million,” for six years. Miller became involved with the trust in April, helping it to start the tender process. Prue Miller When the previous chair stepped down, she took on the role. Miller said a tender is likely to be chosen for the jetty rebuild within six weeks and then the “middle phase” of fundraising can start. “It will be important to have not only the support of the harbour community but wider Christchurch, too.” •The trust’s next fundraising event will be a vintage fair and tour of the historic Waitahuna homestead in Governors Bay on October 26.
