The club was founded in 1891 and sails out of Moncks Bay. It is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the country and has produced world-class sailors, including Olympic medal-winners Peter Mander, Jack Cropp and Leslie Egnot. For the start of the sailing season, the club is running ‘learn to sail’ courses over the next six weeks. New members are welcome. Email sailcyc@gmail.com to find out more. Over the weekend, cannons were fired heralding the season’s start. Vice Commodore Kim Clinch said the club is the perfect place to learn how to sail. “It’s a very safe space to learn as it’s shallow and sheltered,” she said. “The club is also very family-orientated with multiple generations competing against each other for fun.” Clinch said her husband Shane and 17-year-old son, Aston, often sail against each other. The club trains in dinghy yachts, which are smaller boats compared to keelers. It has also produced national competition winners, including 13-year-old Will Leech, who is the current New Zealand optimist national champion. Will started sailing when he was six and went on to do the learn to sail programme with the club. “The things I love about sailing are meeting new people who have become some of my best friends, travelling which takes you to new places all the time. Will said the yacht club is his second home during summer. “The culture down there is really cool and all of the senior classes would help out the juniors and it is great. I have been very lucky to have some amazing coaches right through from learn to sail, green fleet to the top end of optimist open fleet,” he said.
