World Animal Day is<br />

globally celebrated<br />

on <strong>October</strong> 4 as <strong>the</strong><br />

Francis of Assisi,<br />

<strong>the</strong> patron sa<strong>in</strong>t of animals. It is a<br />

global social movement that seeks<br />

to raise <strong>the</strong> status of animals to<br />

improve welfare standards. Animal<br />

lovers from across <strong>the</strong> world show<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir compassion on <strong>the</strong> day for<br />

<strong>the</strong> animals who cannot speak for<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves by giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m a voice.<br />

Celebrat<strong>in</strong>g world animal day<br />

embraces <strong>the</strong> animals’ welfare<br />

movement, and makes <strong>the</strong><br />

world a better place for <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

survive. Increased education and<br />

awareness can create a change<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world where animals are<br />

recognized as sensitive be<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and full respect and love is always<br />

paid to <strong>the</strong>ir welfare. It is dedicated<br />

to educat<strong>in</strong>g humans on how <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

actions make an impact on <strong>the</strong><br />

animals and create awareness on<br />

World animal day<br />

was first celebrated<br />

by cytologist He<strong>in</strong>rich<br />

people and <strong>the</strong> planet.<br />

Animals help us to keep a natural<br />

both work and play. By <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

awareness and education we can<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> standards of animal<br />

All animals play an important<br />

Organizations and supporters<br />

connect and organize events to<br />

1. Donate anyth<strong>in</strong>g for animals to<br />

non-profit organizations<br />

2. Make your time at a local shelter<br />

or animal sanctuary.<br />

Nature <strong>in</strong><br />

art<br />

By Elyasaf Maymon<br />

“Our creations are <strong>in</strong>fluential, so keep<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g,” says Elyasaf Maymon<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

Elyasaf Maymon is an<br />

artist based <strong>in</strong> Israel who<br />

specializes <strong>in</strong> realistic<br />

acrylic pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs. His<br />

work aims to exam<strong>in</strong>e our<br />

relationship with nature. Nature <strong>in</strong><br />

art can take many visual forms,<br />

from photorealism to abstraction.<br />

Art can mimic nature, by seek<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to visually replicate objects as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y actually appear <strong>in</strong> real life.<br />

There are many different ways to<br />

approach <strong>the</strong> subject of nature <strong>in</strong><br />

art. Art can open our eyes to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tricacy and beauty of <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

world. It can be a challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

His greatest <strong>in</strong>spiration<br />

is nature that he f<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

around <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Currently he is work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on a series of beautiful<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs from India<br />

and Nepal where he<br />

has toured.<br />

piece express<strong>in</strong>g our complex<br />

human connection to nature but<br />

that is <strong>the</strong> beauty of it.<br />

In <strong>the</strong>se hyperreal, digital times,<br />

it is easy to forget that we are<br />

susceptible to natural forces.<br />

Art can help us become more<br />

conscious of our true relationship<br />

with nature. Elyasaf studied for a<br />

period of time at Bezalel <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />

but his big development began<br />

from his own <strong>in</strong>dependent learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and research.<br />

His greatest <strong>in</strong>spiration is nature<br />

that he f<strong>in</strong>ds around <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Currently he is work<strong>in</strong>g on a series<br />

of beautiful pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs from India<br />

and Nepal where he has toured.<br />

Elyasaf is most proud of <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

that he is able to touch people<br />

with his art. Creat<strong>in</strong>g art requires<br />

us to open our own hearts, be<br />

vulnerable and share <strong>the</strong> truth of<br />

who we are but once someone<br />

connects to this art, <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

immensely reward<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Most of us know <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g moved by a work of art,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r it is a song, a play, a<br />

poem, a novel or a pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. When<br />

we are touched, we are moved; we<br />

are transported to a new place that<br />

is, never<strong>the</strong>less, strongly rooted<br />

<strong>in</strong> a physical experience, <strong>in</strong> our<br />

bodies. Elyasaf’s message to o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

artist is that “our creations are<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluential, so keep creat<strong>in</strong>g”.<br />

his leadership, Shams has become <strong>the</strong> quickest grow<strong>in</strong>g media free zone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE.<br />

They also provide support and opportunities across 120 bus<strong>in</strong>ess license activities<br />

with facilities, legal framework, general and logistical services to <strong>in</strong>vestors. Here is<br />

H.E. Dr. Khalid Omar Al Midfa’s <strong>in</strong>terview with <strong>Magzoid</strong> where he talks about <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives of Shams and what all we can look out for from <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

You have prom<strong>in</strong>ently<br />

established yourself as a<br />

successful executive. We<br />

would like to know about<br />

your very first step <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

corporate world.<br />

As an entrepreneur, I tried many<br />

different ventures of which some of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m succeeded and some didn’t.<br />

But it was only after complet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

my studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK that I got a<br />

lot of ideas that could be applied<br />

to <strong>the</strong> UAE. It was <strong>the</strong> time that <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternet had started to boom and<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were a lot of new companies<br />

which were succeed<strong>in</strong>g and gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

good publicity. From <strong>the</strong>re, I came<br />

back to <strong>the</strong> UAE and tried to venture<br />

<strong>in</strong>to bus<strong>in</strong>esses but it was also <strong>the</strong><br />

time f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis hit us due to<br />

which I had to move to Abu Dhabi<br />

to jo<strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r company. While I<br />

was <strong>the</strong>re, I was approached by<br />

Sharjah to head <strong>the</strong> Sharjah TV<br />

Station under <strong>the</strong> Sharjah Media<br />

Corporation. So I returned and got<br />

my ideas implemented. Sharjah<br />

TV got a lot of support from <strong>the</strong><br />

leadership and <strong>the</strong> teams work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sharjah Media Corporation. While<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re, I met new people and<br />

new companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> media and<br />

creative sector and learned about<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. That’s when I realized that we<br />

need to create a platform <strong>in</strong> Sharjah<br />

for companies who have ideas and<br />

abilities for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. This took<br />

me back to my entrepreneurial<br />

ambitions where I wanted to create<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g new for <strong>the</strong> people.<br />

The risk tak<strong>in</strong>g spirit has helped<br />

me come so far, and now I am <strong>in</strong>to<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g more calculated risks.<br />

Would you like to talk a bit about<br />

your educational background?<br />

I got my Ph.D. <strong>in</strong><br />

and a Master’s degree <strong>in</strong><br />

also obta<strong>in</strong>ed my Bachelor’s degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> Telecommunications Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from Khalifa University <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE.<br />

What k<strong>in</strong>d of companies do you<br />

plan on host<strong>in</strong>g with Shams?<br />

When we started, we were look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> necessary<br />

our ma<strong>in</strong> focus. For <strong>the</strong> creative and<br />

hardwork<strong>in</strong>g people, we wanted to<br />

create a platform. Jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g hands<br />

with people from different fields<br />

who don’t have to start from scratch<br />

and become <strong>the</strong> launch<strong>in</strong>g platform<br />

What are <strong>the</strong> new <strong>in</strong>itiatives and<br />

projects com<strong>in</strong>g up from Shams<br />

to boost <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g wave of<br />

entrepreneurship?<br />

Our goals at Shams have<br />

always revolved around mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aim to be a catalyst for <strong>the</strong> success<br />

SHAMS INTRODUCED<br />

A GROUND-BREAKING<br />

SERVICE IN THE<br />

BUSINESS SECTOR – THE<br />

VIRTUAL OFFICE, WHICH<br />

ALLOWS STARTUPS AND<br />

SMALL AND MEDIUM<br />

TO LAUNCH THEIR<br />

BUSINESSES WITHOUT<br />

NEEDING TO RENT A<br />

– with a particular focus on media<br />

and creative <strong>in</strong>dustries, but also<br />

beyond. We have seen <strong>the</strong> vast<br />

potential and tremendous room for<br />

growth that entrepreneurs have <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Emirate of Sharjah. Indeed, our<br />

own member companies <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

many ambitious ventures that<br />

were set up by new entrepreneurs<br />

and bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners, supported<br />

by <strong>the</strong> affordable, efficient, and<br />

model we have created. Shams<br />

offers aspir<strong>in</strong>g entrepreneurs<br />

affordable company setup options;<br />

Tak<strong>in</strong>g it a step fur<strong>the</strong>r, Shams<br />

<strong>the</strong> Virtual Office, which allows<br />

startups and small and medium<br />

allows for cutt<strong>in</strong>g costs significantly,<br />

encourag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novators and<br />

creators to provide <strong>the</strong>ir service and<br />

easily operate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> market.<br />

What challenges do you feel is<br />

<strong>the</strong> current SME segment fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and how is Shams committed to<br />

facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m?<br />

As with every sector, <strong>the</strong><br />

COVID-19 pandemic accounts for<br />

a large portion of <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />

fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> startup and SMEs<br />

sector. The pandemic has brought<br />

restrictions on everyth<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

travel and network<strong>in</strong>g, to fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> some cases. And now as <strong>the</strong><br />

world emerges from <strong>the</strong> crisis and<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs slowly get back to normal,<br />

a new normal has taken shape,<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g it necessary for all of us to<br />

adapt – and startups and SMEs<br />

are uniquely agile and equipped to<br />

handle change. For <strong>the</strong> media and<br />

creative <strong>in</strong>dustries, <strong>in</strong> particular, <strong>the</strong><br />

pandemic has pushed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a direction where digital media<br />

is dom<strong>in</strong>ant.<br />

How does Shams facilitate and<br />

plan of promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> creative<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries of arts, culture, music,<br />

film<strong>in</strong>g, etc?<br />

Shams has launched many<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives over <strong>the</strong> years that<br />

sought to support <strong>the</strong> creative<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> emirate. Our<br />

most notable partnerships and<br />

collaborations <strong>in</strong> that regard <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

our sponsorship of Sharjah Art<br />

Foundation’s Sharjah Film Platform,<br />

which Shams supported as <strong>the</strong> film<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry partner. Our partnership<br />

with <strong>the</strong> platform aims to provide<br />

opportunities for Emirati youth to<br />

nurture <strong>the</strong>ir creative talents and<br />

skills. We also took part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Sharjah International Film Festival<br />

for Children and Youth to support<br />

young and budd<strong>in</strong>g talents with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> media <strong>in</strong>dustry. On a different<br />

note, Shams has launched bold<br />

and often ground-break<strong>in</strong>g creative<br />

and media projects, most recent of<br />

which was <strong>the</strong> film ‘218’, produced<br />

as part of <strong>the</strong> UAE Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

Experience <strong>in</strong>itiative, which<br />

allowed <strong>the</strong> audience to take part<br />

<strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> film. ‘218’ is <strong>the</strong> first<br />

crowdsourced film <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arab<br />

world.<br />

Would you like to comment upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> technological <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />

and Shams’s <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

<strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong><br />

technology?<br />

There is no doubt that technology<br />

plays a prom<strong>in</strong>ent role <strong>in</strong> various<br />

sectors, and this is especially true<br />

Architecture is an art form<br />

that reflects how we<br />

present ourselves across<br />

<strong>the</strong> earth’s landscape,<br />

and, like o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

expressive mediums, it changes<br />

with styles, technologies, and<br />

cultural adaptations. Architecture<br />

not only provides worldly needs of<br />

shelter, workspace, and storage<br />

but also represents human ideals<br />

Jess Bell is an American<br />

artist who follows <strong>the</strong><br />

trends of photo realistic<br />

art. She enjoys pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

realistic seascapes and<br />

has been practic<strong>in</strong>g art s<strong>in</strong>ce she<br />

could remember.<br />

Jess took every art class <strong>in</strong> high<br />

school that built her foundation<br />

and propelled her to go on to a<br />

university specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> art. It<br />

was <strong>in</strong> her f<strong>in</strong>al year of graduation<br />

that she was able to rediscover<br />

her passion through oil pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Later, she decided to become<br />

a teacher and only got <strong>the</strong><br />

time to pa<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> her free time.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g years art had<br />

“It always makes me<br />

feel extremely proud<br />

very young children. However, <strong>in</strong><br />

2019 she f<strong>in</strong>ally decided to get<br />

back to her passion and started<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>. She presented her<br />

artwork <strong>in</strong> two art walks <strong>in</strong> shore<br />

towns which was a pleasant new<br />

experience. Now her work hangs<br />

<strong>in</strong> a beautifully curated shore<br />

town gallery that has many local<br />

Jess loves <strong>the</strong> fact that people<br />

choose her art to hang <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

she says.<br />

Art has a lot<br />

of scientific<br />

elements of<br />

cause and<br />

effect. Jess<br />

specifically<br />

observes<br />

this as she<br />

watches her<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ds it<br />

amaz<strong>in</strong>g how<br />

with <strong>the</strong> same <strong>the</strong>me or tools. It's<br />

truly phenomenal how <strong>the</strong> same<br />

It is vital to f<strong>in</strong>d an audience that<br />

genu<strong>in</strong>ely enjoys your artwork.<br />

Her greatest <strong>in</strong>spiration is her<br />

ART FOR CHILDREN<br />

How important<br />

is Art for<br />

CHILDREN'S education?<br />

Society functions <strong>in</strong> such a<br />

way now, that majority of<br />

<strong>the</strong> manual and technical<br />

jobs that were done<br />

by people before can<br />

be done by mach<strong>in</strong>es. The ma<strong>in</strong><br />

demand nowadays lies <strong>in</strong> creativity<br />

and <strong>in</strong>novation which is vital <strong>in</strong><br />

today’s world. Just like ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

or science teaches problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

skills, art teaches children to th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

outside of <strong>the</strong> box.<br />

Art creates different ways for<br />

children to experience <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

It is a way <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

express <strong>the</strong>mselves vibrantly<br />

and colorfully. It helps to process<br />

emotions and experiences. When<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g a piece, <strong>the</strong> decision of<br />

what medium to use or what colors<br />

to mix is entirely upon one’s own<br />

choice and preference. There<br />

is no right and wrong <strong>in</strong> art. Art<br />

education helps improve decisionmak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and boosts self-confidence<br />

which makes children feel more<br />

self-assured as <strong>the</strong>y learn about<br />

what appeals to <strong>the</strong>m which<br />

directly <strong>in</strong>fluences how <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

product looks. It is a way <strong>in</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y can constantly challenge<br />

and understand <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

better lead<strong>in</strong>g to children be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

outstand<strong>in</strong>g self-learners.<br />

There may be a lot of effort and<br />

patience <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g art<br />

which improves <strong>the</strong>ir focus and<br />

perseverance. There are many<br />

<strong>in</strong>stances when quitt<strong>in</strong>g seems<br />

much easier but practic<strong>in</strong>g<br />

art makes <strong>the</strong>m realize that<br />

perseverance pays off. This<br />

m<strong>in</strong>dset will certa<strong>in</strong>ly matter as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

Art helps<br />

children to develop<br />

knowledge, skills,<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>the</strong> basics, through<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y can extend<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir imag<strong>in</strong>ation and<br />

<strong>in</strong>novatively create <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretation of <strong>the</strong><br />

world.<br />

grow, especially while develop<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

career where <strong>the</strong>y are more likely to<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ually develop new skills and<br />

work through difficult projects.<br />

Study<strong>in</strong>g arts also helps<br />

improve academic performance,<br />

not just through creativity, but<br />

improves learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> areas like<br />

math and science as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

literary field. Art helps children to<br />

develop knowledge, skills, and<br />

an understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> basics,<br />

through which <strong>the</strong>y can extend<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir imag<strong>in</strong>ation and <strong>in</strong>novatively<br />

create <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terpretation of <strong>the</strong><br />

world. Art <strong>in</strong>deed helps children<br />

with <strong>the</strong> development of motor<br />

skills, language skills, social skills,<br />

decision mak<strong>in</strong>g, risk-tak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

creativity and so much more<br />

which positively impacts <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

development.<br />

Art education also fosters<br />

collaboration and group learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

As students work toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

learn to understand differences and<br />

diversity and realize <strong>the</strong> ways that<br />

teamwork contributes to a great<br />

performance. By also teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

students how to live and work<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r, art contributes to mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

schools safer and a more peaceful<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g environment.<br />

Arts <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>in</strong> schools can<br />

revive <strong>the</strong> golden learn<strong>in</strong>g era<br />

and improve students’ lives for<br />

<strong>the</strong> better as <strong>the</strong>y develop a much<br />

stronger sense of self-identity and<br />

confidence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ability to grow <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world around <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Pop Art<br />

Movement<br />

Pop art is an art<br />

movement that emerged<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom and<br />

<strong>the</strong> United States dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1950s. The movement<br />

presented a challenge to traditions<br />

of f<strong>in</strong>e art by <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g visuals<br />

from popular and mass culture, such<br />

as comic books, advertis<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

mundane mass-produced objects.<br />

One of its aims is to use images of<br />

popular culture <strong>in</strong> art, emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> banal or kitschy elements of<br />

any culture, most often through <strong>the</strong><br />

use of irony. It is also associated<br />

with <strong>the</strong> artists' use of mechanical<br />

means of reproduction or render<strong>in</strong>g<br />

techniques.<br />

The importance of pop art is that it<br />

made art accessible to <strong>the</strong> masses,<br />

not just to <strong>the</strong> elite. As <strong>the</strong> style<br />

drew <strong>in</strong>spiration from commercial<br />

figures and cultural moments, <strong>the</strong><br />

work was recognized and respected<br />

among <strong>the</strong> general public. F<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was an art form that felt not<br />

only pert<strong>in</strong>ent but accessible to<br />

everyone. In some respects, Pop Art<br />

was ‘art for <strong>the</strong> people’.<br />

Pop art is widely <strong>in</strong>terpreted as<br />

a reaction to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n-dom<strong>in</strong>ant<br />

ideas of abstract expressionism,<br />

as well as an expansion of those<br />

ideas. Pop art and m<strong>in</strong>imalism are<br />

considered to be art movements<br />

that precede postmodern art, or are<br />

some of <strong>the</strong> earliest examples of<br />

postmodern art <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> popularity of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Abstract Expressionists, Pop's<br />

re<strong>in</strong>troduction of identifiable imagery<br />

was a major shift for <strong>the</strong> direction<br />

of modernism. The subject matter<br />

became far from traditional "high<br />

and classic history; ra<strong>the</strong>r, Pop<br />

objects and people of everyday<br />

popular culture to <strong>the</strong> level of<br />

f<strong>in</strong>e art. Perhaps ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>corporation of commercial images,<br />

Pop art has become one of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

recognizable styles of modern art.<br />

Pop Art is often characterized<br />

by bold colours, particularly <strong>the</strong><br />

primary colours: red, blue and<br />

yellow. The colours were usually<br />

bright and similar to your typical<br />

comic strip palette. These colours<br />

weren’t used to represent <strong>the</strong> artist’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>ner world or self as <strong>the</strong>y so often<br />

did <strong>in</strong> previous, classical art forms,<br />

but reflected <strong>the</strong> vibrant, popular<br />

culture around <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs that made Pop<br />

Art so unique was <strong>the</strong> fact that it<br />

chose to focus on such ‘real’ and<br />

relevant subject matter, a decision<br />

which Modernist critics openly<br />

abhorred. Pop Artists blurred <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>es between ‘low’ and ‘high’ art by<br />

bridg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gap between popular<br />

culture and classical art, redef<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> traditional parameters of what<br />

constitutes art and what it means to<br />

be an artist.<br />

Popular Pop artists today <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

<strong>the</strong> likes of Neo-Pop artist Jeff<br />

Koons, <strong>the</strong> iconic Alex Katz and <strong>the</strong><br />

immersive, Japanese visual artist<br />

Yayoi Kusama. Many contemporary<br />

Pop Artists cont<strong>in</strong>ue to keep <strong>the</strong><br />

movement not just alive but<br />

The colour wheel predates<br />

<strong>the</strong> United States<br />

Consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> US is<br />

one of <strong>the</strong> oldest modern<br />

democracies, this is<br />

pretty amaz<strong>in</strong>g. Sir Isaac<br />

Newton <strong>in</strong>vented <strong>the</strong><br />

colour wheel <strong>in</strong> 1706 by<br />

refract<strong>in</strong>g white sunlight<br />

<strong>in</strong>to its six colours. The<br />

realisation that light<br />

alone was responsible for<br />

colour was radical, and <strong>the</strong><br />

wheel proved especially<br />

useful for artists, who<br />

could now easily observe<br />

<strong>the</strong> most effective colour<br />

complementation.<br />

Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks is<br />

based on an all-night coffee stand.<br />

“I simplified <strong>the</strong> scene a great deal<br />

and made <strong>the</strong> restaurant bigger,”<br />

he said. “Unconsciously, probably,<br />

I was pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lonel<strong>in</strong>ess of a<br />

large city.”<br />

The Lover’s eye accessory was<br />

popular dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 18th and 19th<br />

considered a secret romantic gesture<br />

that orig<strong>in</strong>ated from Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Wales<br />

who fell <strong>in</strong> love with a widow. He<br />

proposed by giv<strong>in</strong>g her a locket with<br />

a pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g of his eye <strong>in</strong>side. Wear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this locket would symbolize <strong>the</strong> love<br />

sold at <strong>the</strong> time. Warhol never<br />

World's largest astronomy<br />

museum opens <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

The Shanghai Astronomy<br />

Museum, <strong>the</strong> world's<br />

largest astronomy<br />

museum, has opened<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. The museum<br />

is designed by <strong>the</strong> U.S. firm<br />

Ennead Architects and boasts<br />

an observatory, a planetarium,<br />

and a 78-foot-tall solar telescope.<br />

<strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g span over an area of<br />

420000 square feet and yet <strong>the</strong><br />

visitors won't f<strong>in</strong>d any straight l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

or right angles <strong>in</strong> it.<br />

From certa<strong>in</strong> angles on <strong>the</strong><br />

ground, <strong>the</strong> venue resembles<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g like a deconstructed<br />

spaceship. The entrance opens<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a broad oculus that doubles<br />

as a sundial, project<strong>in</strong>g shapes of<br />

natural light across <strong>the</strong> ground to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>the</strong> time and season.<br />

Pathways <strong>the</strong>n lead viewers<br />

across <strong>the</strong> campus to a<br />

gigantic suspended sphere: <strong>the</strong><br />

planetarium. F<strong>in</strong>ally, museumgoers<br />

are brought to <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g, where an <strong>in</strong>verted glass<br />

dome opens up to <strong>the</strong> night sky.<br />

The museum looks more like<br />

a swirl<strong>in</strong>g celestial vortex from<br />

above. It was <strong>in</strong>spired by <strong>the</strong><br />

organic geometry of <strong>the</strong> universe<br />

and <strong>the</strong> “three-body problem,” an<br />

unsolved ma<strong>the</strong>matical mystery<br />

about how to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> orbital<br />

paths of planets and o<strong>the</strong>r galactic<br />

bodies <strong>in</strong> relation to one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The oculus, sphere, and <strong>in</strong>verted<br />

dome take on new symbolic<br />

relevance from a bird’s eye view,<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, museumgoers<br />

are brought<br />

to <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g, where an<br />

opens up to <strong>the</strong><br />

BRAND LOGOS<br />

Amazon<br />

was first founded <strong>in</strong> Bellevue,<br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, <strong>in</strong> July 1994 by Jeff<br />

Bezos. The journey from a regular<br />

onl<strong>in</strong>e bookstore to one of <strong>the</strong><br />

world’s biggest onl<strong>in</strong>e stores where<br />

you can buy absolutely everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was long and not easy. Amazon has<br />

used several logos over <strong>the</strong> years.<br />

The current Amazon logo depicts<br />

<strong>the</strong> absolute message that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

sell everyth<strong>in</strong>g. The orange smile<br />

connected to <strong>the</strong> letters “A” and<br />

“Z”, implies that you can f<strong>in</strong>d all<br />

<strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs you need on Amazon –<br />

from A to Z. The smile added more<br />

confidence to <strong>the</strong> brand. If you look<br />

at <strong>the</strong> bit deformed “Z”, you may<br />

see a cheek. It was a confident yet<br />

warm smile, welcom<strong>in</strong>g customers.<br />

Or, you may consider it a smirk of a<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ner or a satisfied smirk of a glad<br />

customer who has found whatever<br />

<strong>the</strong>y needed. The logo has become<br />

so synonymous with Amazon that<br />

<strong>the</strong> company feels comfortable<br />

enough putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> smile (or smirk)<br />

by itself on some of <strong>the</strong> sides of its<br />

packages.<br />

Google<br />

is famous for frequently chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> logo on <strong>the</strong> website’s<br />

homepage to reflect current events<br />

and important days <strong>in</strong> history, <strong>the</strong><br />

web giant’s primary Google logo<br />

has changed very little over <strong>the</strong><br />

years. With its simple but brightly<br />

colored letters, <strong>the</strong> colorful Google<br />

logo is one of <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>stantly<br />

recognizable symbols anywhere<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. And after <strong>the</strong> 2015<br />

rebrand<strong>in</strong>g effort, Google’s brand<br />

image now feels more polished<br />

and user-friendly than ever before.<br />

Google’s current logo uses its<br />

traditional and familiar colors: red,<br />

yellow, blue, and green. “Google”,<br />

a misspell<strong>in</strong>g of "googol" is a Lat<strong>in</strong><br />

term that means 10 to <strong>the</strong> 100th<br />

power. The whole idea beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

name was that <strong>the</strong> search eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

could serve up to 100s of results, or<br />

googols, for <strong>the</strong>ir search terms.<br />
