“We are two people working as one, with 

a single vision — something no one else is 

doing in art,” says Gillie and Marc

Creating some of the 

world’s most innovative 

public sculptures, 

Gillie and Marc are 

redesigning what public 

art should be, spreading messages 

of love, equality, and conservation 

around the world. Referred to by the 

media as “the world’s most loving 

artists”, this artistic duo has worked 

side by side for over 28 years. 

The artists are best known 

for their beloved characters, 

Rabbitwoman and Dogman, who 

tell the autobiographical tale of 

two opposites coming together 

to become best friends and soul 

mates. Gillie and Marc believe that 

art is a powerful platform to speak 

about love and diversity, and hence, 

the Rabbit and the Dog, which is 

an unlikely relationship, stand for 

diversity and acceptance through 

love. Their art is multi-disciplinary, 

paying homage to the importance 

of togetherness, as well as the 

magnificence of the natural world, 

and the necessity of preserving it – 

for we are it, and it is us. 

They are eco-warriors 

and use their artistic 

creativity and carvedout 

sculptures to raise 

awareness and promote 

conservation for the wellbeing 

of the environment 

around us.

largest animal sculptures of some

their international project Statues For 

Equality, they increased the number 

of female faces in public sculptures 

around the world, elevating the 

success of these women and 

creating tangible change for gender 

equality. 

Their magnificent sculptures 

and paintings are present in art 

galleries and public sites in over 

250 cities. They have won the 

Allens People’s Choice Award 

at Sydney’s iconic Sculpture by 

the Sea on two occasions as well 

as the Kids’ Choice Award in the 

same year. They’re Archibald Prize 

finalists and have won the Biennale 

di Chianciano in Italy, among other 

notable awards and accolades.

Abu Dhabi Art launches 

an initiative to support the evolving 

UAE art scene 

Abu Dhabi Art 

announced the 

establishment of the 

Friends of Abu Dhabi 

Arts-an initiative to 

promote a new model of public 

cultural philanthropy and help 

support the vibrant arts ecosystem 

of the UAE through Abu Dhabi 

Arts. The Friends of Abu Dhabi 

Art, the first group of more than 40 

professional art enthusiasts started 

this year and will support the 

Abu Dhabi Art Beyond: Emerging 

Artists, which is curated by guest 

curators Sam Bardaouil and Till 

Fellrath. 

Anyone looking to actively 

support artists and the art 

ecosystem in the UAE can 

apply to join the initiative via the 

webpage as well. All members 

are required to pay an annual fee 

for membership, with funds raised 

enabling the commissioning of new 

artworks through Abu Dhabi Art. 

Keystone members will act as an 

advisory group for Friends of Abu 

Dhabi Art, overseen by co-heads, 

Nadine Maalouf, Co-Founder of 81 

Designs and Nadia Sehweil, CEO 

of Bodytree Wellness. 

Benefits for membership include 

opportunities to attend private talks 

by appointed curators and artists, 

as well as artist studio visits and 

events, private tours at the Abu 

Dhabi Art Fair in November and the 

commissioning of new work in Abu 

Dhabi. 

Abu Dhabi Art announced that 

Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath 

will commission emerging UAE 

artists to create three new works; 

Hashel Al Lamki, Maitha Abdalla 

and Christopher Benton’s Beyond: 

Emerging Artists will be exhibited 

at the exhibition in November.

World Animal Day is 

globally celebrated 

on October 4 as the 

celebration day of 

Francis of Assisi, 

the patron saint of animals. It is a 

global social movement that seeks 

to raise the status of animals to 

improve welfare standards. Animal 

lovers from across the world show 

their compassion on the day for 

the animals who cannot speak for 

themselves by giving them a voice. 

Celebrating world animal day 

embraces the animals’ welfare 

movement, and makes the 

world a better place for them to 

survive. Increased education and 

awareness can create a change 

in the world where animals are 

recognized as sensitive beings 

and full respect and love is always 

paid to their welfare. It is dedicated 

to educating humans on how their 

actions make an impact on the 

animals and create awareness on

"I want my pieces 

to be bold, capable 

of celebrating the 

incredible beauty of 

the natural world,” says 

Amber Tyldesley 

Amber Tyldesley is a 

27-year-old wildlife artist 

from Warrington in the 

UK. She graduated from 

the University of Liverpool in 2015 

with first-class honours in English, 

and has since begun to pursue her 

passion for the arts professionally. 

Working predominantly in acrylics, 

her artwork derives from a 

fascination with the intricate details, 

textures and colours found within 

the natural world. 

Having received no formal art 

training, her work has evolved 

in an entirely self-taught manner 

since launching her career. Her 

high-impact sections highlight a 

surprising level of detail and show 

a special interest in the interaction 

between light and dark. Amber 

often incorporates high-gloss resin 

into her work as the final step in 

her process. She finds that resin 

heightens the colours and contrasts 

of the artwork in addition to giving a

distinctive contemporary finish. 

“Acrylics are my chosen medium. 

Despite remaining curious and 

experimenting with new techniques, 

I have yet to find another medium 

that lends itself quite as well to the 

detailed, layered approach to my 

wildlife work. The animal kingdom 

offers unlimited inspiration. From 

familiar favourites such as tigers and 

lions to less-represented species 

like pangolins and okapis, I find 

every species has a story to tell 

and intriguing set of behaviours 

to reveal. Whatever the subject 

may be, I want my pieces to be 

bold- capable of celebrating the 

incredible beauty of the natural 

world,” says Amber. 

Amber has been a finalist in 

the David Shepherd Wildlife 

Foundation ‘Wildlife Artist of the 

Year’ competition for the past

July 2020, with sales raising over 

£2000.00 for the charity during 

this time. 

Supporting conservation efforts 

remains at the heart of her work, 

and over the past three years 

artwork sales have raised over 

£9000.00 for projects across Africa 

and Asia. She views her art as a 

way to connect with unfamiliar and 

endangered species, and to in turn 

raise awareness for their precarious 

position within the world.

Elyasaf Maymon is an 

artist based in Israel who 

specializes in realistic 

acrylic paintings. His 

work aims to examine our 

relationship with nature. Nature in 

art can take many visual forms, 

from photorealism to abstraction. 

Art can mimic nature, by seeking 

to visually replicate objects as 

they actually appear in real life. 

There are many different ways to 

approach the subject of nature in 

art. Art can open our eyes to the 

intricacy and beauty of the natural 

world. It can be a challenging

period of time at Bezalel institution 

but his big development began 

from his own independent learning 

and research. 

His greatest inspiration is nature 

that he finds around the world. 

Currently he is working on a series 

of beautiful paintings from India 

and Nepal where he has toured. 

Elyasaf is most proud of the fact 

that he is able to touch people 

with his art. Creating art requires 

us to open our own hearts, be 

vulnerable and share the truth of 

who we are but once someone 

connects to this art, the feeling is 

immensely rewarding. 

Most of us know the feeling of 

being moved by a work of art, 

whether it is a song, a play, a 

poem, a novel or a painting. When 

we are touched, we are moved; we 

are transported to a new place that 

is, nevertheless, strongly rooted 

in a physical experience, in our 

bodies. Elyasaf’s message to other 

artist is that “our creations are 

influential, so keep creating”.

Chairman of Sharjah Media City (Shams) 

has targeted at creating Sharjah as the first media hub for innovative facilities and 

services and to help small businesses set up in a very cost-efficient manner. Under 

his leadership, Shams has become the quickest growing media free zone in the UAE. 

They also provide support and opportunities across 120 business license activities 

with facilities, legal framework, general and logistical services to investors. Here is 

H.E. Dr. Khalid Omar Al Midfa’s interview with Magzoid where he talks about the 

initiatives of Shams and what all we can look out for from them. 


You have prominently 

established yourself as a 

successful executive. We 

would like to know about 

your very first step in the 

corporate world. 

As an entrepreneur, I tried many 

different ventures of which some of 

them succeeded and some didn’t. 

But it was only after completing 

my studies in the UK that I got a 

lot of ideas that could be applied 

to the UAE. It was the time that the 

internet had started to boom and 

there were a lot of new companies 

which were succeeding and getting 

good publicity. From there, I came 

back to the UAE and tried to venture 

into businesses but it was also the 

time financial crisis hit us due to 

which I had to move to Abu Dhabi 

to join another company. While I 

was there, I was approached by 

Sharjah to head the Sharjah TV 

Station under the Sharjah Media 

Corporation. So I returned and got 

my ideas implemented. Sharjah 

TV got a lot of support from the 

leadership and the teams working 

in Sharjah Media Corporation. While 

working there, I met new people and 

new companies in the media and 

creative sector and learned about 

them. That’s when I realized that we 

need to create a platform in Sharjah 

for companies who have ideas and 

abilities for the industry. This took 

me back to my entrepreneurial 

ambitions where I wanted to create 

something new for the people. 

The risk taking spirit has helped 

me come so far, and now I am into 

taking more calculated risks. 

Would you like to talk a bit about 

your educational background? 

I got my Ph.D. in 

Telecommunications Engineering 

and a Master’s degree in 

Communication Systems and Signal 

Processing from the University of 

Bristol in the United Kingdom and 

also obtained my Bachelor’s degree 

in Telecommunications Engineering 

from Khalifa University in the UAE. 

What kind of companies do you 

plan on hosting with Shams? 

When we started, we were looking 

into how technology has affected 

the industry. We never thought about 

having anchor tenants; we wanted 

to target the individual and creative 



person. A person can be a good 

talker but not a good marketer, and 

supporting them with the necessary 

services so that they can excel was 

our main focus. For the creative and 

hardworking people, we wanted to 

create a platform. Joining hands 

with people from different fields 

who don’t have to start from scratch 

and become the launching platform 

for the companies was our main 

goal. As we always promoted 

going digital, we were ready for 

the pandemic before it came. By 

being adaptive we didn’t face many 

issues in 2020. Since the rise in 

competition, thinking differently was 

our prime focus 

What are the new initiatives and 

projects coming up from Shams 

to boost the incoming wave of 

entrepreneurship? 

Our goals at Shams have 

always revolved around making 

entrepreneurship accessible and 

inspire business development. We 

aim to be a catalyst for the success 

of business ventures in the emirate

were set up by new entrepreneurs 

and business owners, supported 

by the affordable, efficient, and 

sustainability-driven licensing 

model we have created. Shams 

offers aspiring entrepreneurs 

affordable company setup options; 

a streamlined, quick, and simple 

online registration process; 100% 

foreign ownership; 100% repatriation 

of capital and profits; and 0% 

corporate or personal income tax. 

Taking it a step further, Shams 

introduced a ground-breaking 

service in the business sector – 

the Virtual Office, which allows 

startups and small and medium 

enterprises (SMEs) to launch their 

businesses without needing to rent 

a physical office. The new service 

allows for cutting costs significantly, 

encouraging innovators and 

creators to provide their service and 

easily operate in the market. 

What challenges do you feel is 

the current SME segment facing 

and how is Shams committed to 

facilitating them? 

As with every sector, the 

COVID-19 pandemic accounts for 

a large portion of the challenges 

facing the startup and SMEs 

sector. The pandemic has brought 

restrictions on everything from 

travel and networking, to funding 

in some cases. And now as the 

world emerges from the crisis and 

things slowly get back to normal, 

a new normal has taken shape, 

making it necessary for all of us to 

adapt – and startups and SMEs 

are uniquely agile and equipped to 

handle change. For the media and 

creative industries, in particular, the 

pandemic has pushed the industry 

into a direction where digital media 

is dominant. 

How does Shams facilitate and 

plan of promoting the creative 

industries of arts, culture, music, 

filming, etc? 

Shams has launched many 

initiatives over the years that 

sought to support the creative 

industries in the emirate. Our 

most notable partnerships and 

collaborations in that regard include 

our sponsorship of Sharjah Art 

Foundation’s Sharjah Film Platform, 

which Shams supported as the film 

industry partner. Our partnership

In the past, architects were 

always seen as the ultimate artists, 

visualizing imaginary buildings and 

places deep within the recesses 

of their imagination and teasing 

them out in paint or pencil. Only 

then could they begin the process 

of drawing how the building 

could be assembled and brought 

to reality through an elaborate 

collaboration with craftsmen. They 

drew upon their visual experiences, 

knowledge of human nature, and 

understanding of physics to bring 

to fruition wondrous places: places 

that impacted not only the way we 

lived our daily lives but the very 

development of our culture—and 

ultimately our civilization.

Jess Bell is an American 

artist who follows the 

trends of photo realistic 

art. She enjoys painting 

realistic seascapes and 

has been practicing art since she 

could remember. 

Jess took every art class in high 

school that built her foundation 

and propelled her to go on to a 

university specializing in art. It 

was in her final year of graduation 

that she was able to rediscover 

her passion through oil painting. 

Later, she decided to become 

a teacher and only got the 

time to paint in her free time.

she says.

of the most influential artists on the 

planet and a beautiful live orchestra, 

a sensory overload of powerful 

visuals was beamed across Al Wasl 

Plaza’s dome, the world’s largest 

360-degree projection screen. More 

than 3,000 lighting fixtures, 1,000 

speakers, 1,300 costumes and 

buckets of passion and emotion 

from every one of the 1,000-plus 

participating performers and 

volunteers also contributed to a 

one-of-a-kind spectacle of masterful 

artistic collaboration. 

The flags of Expo’s 192 

participating nations, revealed via a 

domino effect as flags were opened 

one by one, was a proud and 

visually stunning moment that also 

signified a reawakening of the world. 

It was celebrated tenor Andrea 

Bocelli who brought the house 

down, rounding off the night’s 

electrifying proceedings with one 

of his all-time classics, The Prayer, 

its lyrics of human connection 

crescendoing into the grand finale. 

Before that, chart-topping British 

vocalist Ellie Goulding belted out 

a resounding, uplifting version of 

Anything Can Happen; Andra Day 

enraptured the audience with Rise

composer A.R. Rahman’s all-women 

ensemble, the Firdaus Orchestra,

a pivotal part of the ceremony’s 

inspiring journey. 

A feeling of warmth, respect, 

togetherness and camaraderie was 

palpable throughout the celebration, 

which also demonstrated that 

the world is primed and ready to 

re-embrace live events. The stage is 

now set for Expo 2020 Dubai to host 

the biggest cultural gathering in the

and emotionally inspiring 182 days, 

as more than 200 participants

Manasse Rampino is 

an Italian artist based 

in the UAE who 

specializes in Pop 

artistry. Pop art got its 

name from Lawrence Alloway, who 

was a British critic in the 1950s. The 

form was well-liked for its daring 

easy appearance and its bright and 

vivacious colors. 

Manasse developed his artistic 

career in Dubai with an exhibition 

which was a turning point in his 

career. The exhibition led him 

to receive some proposals for 

galleries, collaborations with clubs 

and restaurants, master classes, live 

performances, and commissions. 

The appreciation and love he 

received from the people were his 

push to not give up and motivated 

him to keep going further. 

It all started during the pandemic 

or rather restarted during the 

pandemic. He wanted to create 

something funny and so changed 

his style and started creating pop 

art with vibrant and fluorescent 

colors. “I like to take inspiration 

from classical art. I love the plastic 

and theatrical poses of renaissance 

painting; I find them fascinating 

and mysterious. I try to explore the 

different themes in my paintings, 

which range from fashion, cartoon, 

cinema, nature and classic icons,” 

he says. 

His paintings portray a pleasant 

nostalgia. Through his artworks, he 

wishes to remind people that we 

can be happy and carefree just like 

how were during our childhood. He 

feels most exhilarated when he sees 

people happy and satisfied with his 

works.

Movement 

Pop art is an art 

movement that emerged 

in the United Kingdom and 

the United States during 

the 1950s. The movement 

presented a challenge to traditions 

of fine art by including visuals 

from popular and mass culture, such 

as comic books, advertising and 

mundane mass-produced objects. 

One of its aims is to use images of 

popular culture in art, emphasizing 

the banal or kitschy elements of 

any culture, most often through the 

use of irony. It is also associated 

with the artists' use of mechanical 

means of reproduction or rendering 

techniques. 

The importance of pop art is that it 

made art accessible to the masses, 

not just to the elite. As the style 

drew inspiration from commercial 

figures and cultural moments, the 

work was recognized and respected 

among the general public. Finally, 

there was an art form that felt not 

only pertinent but accessible to 

everyone. In some respects, Pop Art 

was ‘art for the people’. 

Pop art is widely interpreted as 

a reaction to the then-dominant 

ideas of abstract expressionism,

Tarsila Schubert is a 

Brazilian-born street 

artist who has committed 

her life to art, drawing

structured framework, that

Tarsila was the first woman to 

paint a wall in Amman, Jordan, in

Catherine Nunez is

self-expression,” says Anastasia Trusova 


“In nature, each branch, 

each leaf, each flower 

is unique. It is very 

interesting to examine 

their bends and then try 

to paint on the sheet,” 

Anastasia Trusova is an 

artist who specializes 

in acrylic painting 

which revolves around 

her main theme of 

nature. She has chosen to work 

with acrylic colors as she feels it is 

a real treasure for those who like to 

experiment and there are no limits to 

it due to its quick drying time. 

Always being surrounded by 

trees, fields, and forests, watching 

the dawn, inhaling the smell of wet 

grass, and listening to the sound 

of the wind is what she considers 

as real happiness. “In nature, each 

branch, each leaf, each flower 

is unique. It is very interesting to 

examine their bends and then try to 

paint on the sheet,” says Anastasia. 

She has been painting for as 

long as she can remember. Always 

knowing that she wanted to be 

an artist, she received her higher 

education in art. Anastasia also 

believes that creativity is freedom 

as well as a way of self-expression. 

“I love graphics, sculpture, and 

painting. I could not refuse anything 

and so began to paint as I liked, 

and named my style texture-graphic 

impressionism,” she says. 

Anastasia’s message to other 

artists is “I think everyone should 

have the right to free education! I 

can't help everyone, but I'm 

trying really hard! I would advise 

everyone not to lose heart. Life is an 

adventure and an interesting road, 

so be happy!” She even organizes 

art marathons and records training 

videos for free access to other artists 

wanting to learn. She is happy to be 

supporting other artists.

Exhibition (ADIHEX 2021) 

held under the patronage 

of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al

Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of 

the Emirates Falconers’ Club (EFC) 

took place from 27 September 2021 

to 3 October 2021 at Abu Dhabi 

National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) 

which saw the participation of 680 

companies and brands from 44 

countries. 

Held under the theme 

"Sustainability and Heritage... A 

Reborn Aspiration", this year's 

edition featured 319 local exhibitors; 

as well as, 32 governmental and 

official entities, and more than 20 

local and international falconry 

clubs, associations, and institutions, 

across 11 sections covering an area 

of approximately 50,000 square 

meters, the largest in the history of 

the event. 

The richness and 

comprehensiveness of Adihex 

were represented through 11 

different sectors, including arts 

and crafts, equestrian, falconry,

hunting and safari trips, hunting 

and camping equipment, hunting 

weapons, projects to enhance 

and preserve cultural heritage,

of ADIHEX's Supreme Organising 

Committee and Secretary-General 

of the EFC, welcomed the event’s

the UAE, which included heads of

worldwide. In his speech, he 

stressed that the event’s 18th edition 

took place as part of the club’s 

support for the UAE’s strategy to 

plan for the next 50 years. 

The live performances arena 

was the heart of the event which 

included musical and heritage 

equestrian shows, horse training 

workshops, Arabian camel auctions, 

archery with a bow and arrow on 

horseback, and workshops on 

the basics of driving in the land 

and adventures, as well as an 

educational journey about the 

roots of Arabian falconry and its 

unique characteristics presented by 

Mohammed bin Zayed Falconry and 

Desert Physiognomy School.

Mindful Making | Punch Needle 

Embroidery at Art Jameel 

Jameel Arts Centre’s Mindful Making sessions are 

designed to bring to the forefront the art of oldfashioned 

hands-on making, with benefits ranging 

from a slow-down in pace and the single pointed 

concentration characteristic of meditation, to the 

creative and now-rare sensory stimulation our daily 

lives often lack. Inspired by Pacita Abad’s work, 

specifically her vibrant underwater abstract scenes, 

the session taking place on Saturday October 16, 

is centered around the meditative craft and art form 

of punch needle embroidery, offering participants 

the opportunity to experiment and create a study 

of colour using an Oxford punch needle tool and a 

variety of colourful yarns.

Luminous Letters by 

Mohammed Mandi at Sharjah 

Calligraphy Museum 

A solo exhibition by Emirati artist and 

calligrapher Mohammed Mandi is being 

showcased at Sharjah Calligraphy 

Museum. The show titled Luminous 

Letters presents more than 60 artworks by 

Mandi, including a work wherein the artist 

inscribed the word "Sharjah" in 42 different 

forms. The show traces Mandi’s decadeslong 

career, from his studies at the Arabic 

Calligraphy Improvement School in Cairo 

to his training under renowned Turkish 

calligrapher Hassan Chalabi in the 1970s.

“Draw beyond the norm,” says 

Mignon Zakuga 


Mignon Zakuga is a 

Russian artist based 

in the United States 

who specializes 

in anatomy and 

landscapes through mainly digital 

art. Although, she still prefers 

traditional mediums and has done 

a number of paintings in gouache 

and sketches with charcoal, she 

finds digital art to be most costeffective. 

Mignon wants her artwork to be 

powerful and impactful and asks 

other artists to draw to create an 

impact. When you put your work 

out there in the world, there is an 

inherent vulnerability, but that’s 

what makes you more satisfied 

with the outcome. Mignon, 

through her efforts in painting, has 

exceeded in creating dark and 

powerful art. During the pandemic, 

she has begun working on a comic 

which she aims to release. She 

hopes for it to give some insight to 

the mind of a child going through 

abuse and just trying to exist with 

it. She aims to open a charity one 

day for long term mental health 

to aid children who have suffered 

extreme abuse. 

In recent years, she has 

been drawing even more which 

has undoubtedly sided in 

strengthening her art skills. Her 

favourite artist who she absolutely 

adores is Iumazark and her 

greatest inspiration is Vash the 

stampede who is one of the 

characters from a manga series, 

Trigun. Another favourite artist is 

Artimisia, who has been relevant 

thought history as the greatest 

female artist of the baroque age. 

Art helps people make sense of 

their world and engage in activities 

that encompass many aspects 

of their inquisitive motivation to 

develop meaning. Drawing what 

we truly connect with helps shape 

our growth and find purpose. 

“You don’t always have to do 

Meta. Draw beyond the norm,” 

says Mignon. She believes that 

we must experiment with different 

shapes and designs that go 

for all genders. Every person is 

unique with diverse anatomy. It is 

important to learn more than what 

is common. That is how you grow 

as an artist.

Tiffany's campaign shows 

Beyoncé and Jay-Z posing with a Basquiat painting 

Tiffany & Co. has launched 

a campaign about 

modern love featuring 

Beyoncé and Jay-Z with 

a Basquiat painting as 

a backdrop. The long-unseen 

painting titled Equals Pi (1982) is 

meant to recall the luxury retailer’s 

signature shade of blue. 

The painting features the artist’s 

recognizable skulls and scrawled 

text with phrases such as such 

as “AMORITE”, “TEN YEN” and 

“DUNCE”. Before appearing in the 

new Tiffany campaign, the painting 

was previously owned by two other 

jewelry moguls: Italian designers 

Alberto and Stefania Sabbadini. It

World's largest astronomy 

museum opens in China 

The Shanghai Astronomy 

Museum, the world's 

largest astronomy 

museum, has opened 

in China. The museum 

is designed by the U.S. firm 

Ennead Architects and boasts 

an observatory, a planetarium, 

and a 78-foot-tall solar telescope. 

the building span over an area of 

420000 square feet and yet the 

visitors won't find any straight lines 

or right angles in it. 

From certain angles on the 

ground, the venue resembles 

something like a deconstructed 

spaceship. The entrance opens 

into a broad oculus that doubles 

as a sundial, projecting shapes of 

natural light across the ground to 

indicate the time and season. 

Pathways then lead viewers 

across the campus to a 

gigantic suspended sphere: the 

planetarium. Finally, museumgoers 

are brought to the top of the 

building, where an inverted glass 

dome opens up to the night sky. 

The museum looks more like 

a swirling celestial vortex from 

above. It was inspired by the 

organic geometry of the universe 

and the “three-body problem,” an 

unsolved mathematical mystery 

about how to determine the orbital 

paths of planets and other galactic 

bodies in relation to one another.

is famous for frequently changing
