Row erupts over Wigram Skies’
inclusion in ward boundary
• By Fiona Ellis
WIGRAM SKIES is struggling
to find its home territory, with
residents’ associations in Hornby
and Halswell arguing against
including the subdivision within
their ward boundaries.
Currently, the area is earmarked
to stay in the Halswell
Ward, but this could change
in the coming weeks, with the
city council yet to make a final
decision.
Halswell
Residents’
Association
co-secretary
David Hawke
contested the
inclusion at a
local government
commis-
David Hawke
sion hearing on the city council’s
final representation review
proposal.
The city council need to look
at the situation in the long term,
he said.
The ward population in the final
proposal was already higher
than average.
“Halswell is a rapidly growing
area so sooner or later Wigram
is going to have to move,” Hawke
said.
Call for better access to board meetings
THE CENTRAL Riccarton
Residents’ Association is backing
calls for better public access to
community board meetings.
Secretary Garth Wilson said
the association had been trying
for years to get Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
meetings audio recorded for the
public record and more recently
to have them video recorded.
It comes after The Star reported
last week that board member
Andrei Moore was pushing to
provide video recordings of
board meetings to the public,
who can not attend in person
under Covid-19 alert level 2.
Wilson congratulated Moore
for his stand.
“As Mr Moore says there have
to be basic levels of transparency
in place,” he said.
Community support for using Southern Motorway as border
• From page 1
“We think you need to set
boundaries so that people can
actually build up a sense of
belonging.”
He would prefer that the
Halswell Ward expands
towards the south-east, where
future houses were set to come
under the Banks Peninsula
Ward.
“There are 700 houses not yet
constructed, 400 are consented,
another 300 planned, on that
south-east corner of Halswell.
Why not start bringing them
in?”
The association believed that
the Southern Motorway should
be the western border of its
ward, and Hawke said there was
community support for setting
this boundary.
Greater Hornby Residents
Association chairman Marc Duff
argued against passing the area
to the Hornby Ward, telling the
commission the association had
“strong feedback” that people
living there wanted to stay with
Halswell.
Moore requested that board staff
be allowed to record the board’s
Zoom meetings and post them
on the city council website, as occurred
with city council meetings.
City council head of community
support, governance and
partnerships John Filsell said
there was no mandate, budget
or other resources to make a
recording of the appropriate
quality, but that publicly available
meeting minutes provided
transparency.
Wilson said Filsell was being
forced to justify a wasteful and
effectively broken city council
system.
to take on the area because they
wanted the Hornby Ward to
encompass more of Sockburn
and Yaldhurst instead.
Hornby was closely connected
to these areas, and had a
community of interest with
Yaldhurst because of the quarries
located in the area.
He argued that Springs Rd,
rather than the motorway, was
the natural boundary between
Minutes were “basically useless”
because they did not record
comments made by board members
or staff, he said.
“There is no public accountability,
therefore, on elected
board members for what they say
or for the reasons they give on
how they vote.”
“Many of the instances of
less than desirable actions that
have occurred at board meetings
in the past would not have
happened if meetings had been
recorded and those unedited
recordings been made available
to the public.”
Ratepayers had the right to
hear and see the way public
submissions were treated, as city
council managers were their
servants, not their overlords, he
said.
the wards.
Acknowledging that
population was an issue in
Halswell, Duff said the
Halswell Residents’ Association
needed to be realistic about its
future.
“What we’d like to see is
maybe a Halswell South, or a
new ward, because there is going
to be that much growth in that
area.”
Quilters’ work on show at exhibition
• By Fiona Ellis
THE COVID-19 pandemic has
caused a surge of people reaching
for a sewing machine to try their
hand at the craft of quilt-making.
Christchurch Quilters president
Maria Rohs said the club’s
biennial exhibition this week has
more than 200 entries.
“We used to struggle to get
100,” Rohs said.
“We’ve got a lot more quilts in
the show than we usually do because
people have had two lockdowns,
this year and last year, so
everyone’s had more time.
“People are keener on getting
back into traditional things.”
The exhibition will run in the
Papanui High School hall until
Sunday. This year the theme is
“vivid.”
A wide range of styles from
traditional to modern would be
on show, with three non-members
selecting prize-winners.
Roh is among the exhibitors,
although she had been to busy
organising the event to enter any
major works.
However, her handiwork
earned her a national award in
the Aotearoa Quilters’ Great
New Zealand Quilt Show earlier
this year.
She was thrilled when her
piece, Night View at Sunset, won
the small quilt section.
The piece was inspired by
the view from her home, and she
captured the intense light by using
metallic thread.
In over three decades of the
craft, she had only ever made one
quilt for herself, she said.
“I’ve only ever had one of my
own, when I had my 60th birthday
I got some floral fabric and
got everyone to make a block
each.’’
Several sewing machines
were set up as around 50 people
pitched in with their contributions,
and each person also
signed their fabric.
This favourite quilt of the
many she had made, and received
a lot of use, she said.
She first discovered quilting 35
years ago after hearing that her
local church ran craft sessions,
charging just $1 to cover cups of
tea.
A keen sewer since her
school days, her curiosity was
aroused.
“I’d heard about it and I
thought: ‘That sounds interesting,
I’ll go along and try it’.”
Three years later, she became
one of the earliest members of
the Christchurch Quilters.
Scraps of old, handmade
clothes, as well as specially
bought fabric, were used to
make her first piece, a “pretty
basic” bed quilt for one of her
daughters.
Over three decades later, she
had much more material to
hand.
“You see lovely fabric that you
like and then you buy it and
gradually you build up quite a
collection.”
Her current stash included
pieces from the early days when
she was just starting, as well as
fabric from her family’s native
Austria, and hand-customised
fabric she had worked on during
craft classes.
Most were cotton, the standard
quilting fabric because of its
longevity.
The creativity of the craft was
her favourite thing about it
“It’s an artistic outlet. I’ve got
more into art quilts and I’m not
making so many bed quilts now.”
This was common for quilters
who had worked their way
through all of their family members,
she said.
All her grandchildren were
equipped with personalised
quilts, so she had turned to make
smaller, ornamental works of her
own design.
Nature was a constant inspiration.
A forest scene depicting
kōwhai and kererū was currently
under way, and she had recently
finished a piece based on fallen
winter leaves.
Another quilt she had recently
finished was based on leaves
she noticed on the ground over
winter.
“I don’t think it is hard, you
just need to decide you want to
do it and find out how.”
Learning the craft was easier
than ever these days, especially
because of online tutorials on
sites such as YouTube, she said.
However, it was a time-intensive
hobby.
“Only once did I actually take
a note of all the hours. It was a
queen-sized quilt that I made
for a friend. It was 90 hours, and
that . . . was just making the top
of it.”
electronic problems in most makes and
models of vehicle and repair them, saving
time for the technicians and cost for the
customer.
roses Auto electrical offer a full range
programming and coding. Depending
on the model of the vehicle, it reads
and clears all Diagnostic trouble codes
(Dtcs) to identify the faults. it also
reads live vehicle data such as engine
temperature, engine speed, vehicle
speed and suspension height data. Plus,
roses Auto electrical have the back-up a
worldwide european support base.
The Autologic european Diagnostics
machine covers vehicles from 1995
onwards, so for owners of out-of-warranty
Hearing Care How It Should Be
When it comes to caring for your senses, you want to know you are
in good hands. So, when you, or your loved ones start to have
problems with your ears or your hearing, there is a team of
passionate professionals who will give you the very best service.
Hear Again have been delighting the Hornby community from their
bright, purpose made clinic at the Hub, for the past 4 years.
Offering everything from Ear Wax removal by gentle microsuction,
through to the fitting of the most advanced hearing aids offered by
the world’s leading manufacturers, the team are happy to help.
Neil Hardisty, NZAS
Audiometrist, has been
expertly overcoming hearing
difficulties for residents of
Christchurch since 2009.
Neil is frequently praised for
his limitless patience,
wonderful caring nature and
ability to solve all manner of
hearing and hearing aid
problems. Neil is never
satisfied until you are.
In New Zealand, one in six people have some degree of hearing
difficulty. Over the age of 60, more than half the population are
living with a significant hearing reduction. This invisible condition
can be incredibly frustrating, as conversation on a one to one basis
can be ok, but social situations become very uncomfortable indeed.
Background noise can make conversation almost impossible to
follow causing some sufferers to remove themselves from the
conversation, or even avoid going to the social function completely.
Other early signs of hearing difficulty are a creeping up of the
volume control on the TV, frequently asking family and friends to
repeat themselves, or accusing people of mumbling when they
speak. With hearing loss recently being linked to the early onset of
Dementia in studies throughout the world, these early signs are not
to be ignored. Early detection of this is paramount.
Hear Again are the highest rated hearing clinic in Christchurch,
offering FREE no obligation 30 minute initial hearing assessments.
If you, or any of your loved ones have noticed any difficulties with
your hearing, this can be quickly and professionally checked for you
at The Hub, 418 Main South Road, Hornby. If you already have
hearing aids from any manufacturer, they will give them a FREE
clean and check to ensure they are in tip top condition for you.
Are your ears feeling blocked?
Ear wax and other blockages can be safely and easily
removed using the very latest microsuction techniques.
Ear wax production varies hugely from person to person,
some ears keep themselves very clean, but others are
like little wax production factories!
For only $50 you can get quick, instant relief and
get back to enjoying the sounds of life again!
Come visit the highest rated hearing clinic in Christchurch
Check out all of our 5 Star Google reviews. Here is a small selection:
Wow, need help quickly, and Hear Again provided quick service. The team were very friendly and Neil
was very conscientious. Great job!
Happy to recommend. Friendly, professional service from Neil and team. Will definitely be returning
for any future requirements.
I can HEAR AGAIN ! I popped in to see Neil and his team on the way to the pharmacy to get an ear
cleaning product as it sounded like I was underwater. The Hear Again team saw me on the spot as
they had a free appointment. Ears 100% clear. Many many thanks Neil, will see (and hear) you again
