After closing due to the Christchurch earthquake, Lincoln was identified as a desirable location to open a new restaurant. After a long wait to secure a site, Mughal Kitchen is now open for business. Mughal Kitchen wants its customers to “eat like a king”, and the chef, with over 18 years of experience, is keen for people to have a fantastic dining experience. With both dine-in and takeaway available, menus offer an extensive range of authentic Indian dishes, including the ever-popular butter chicken. Abdul, the owner of Mughal Kitchen, states that a popular dish is the Samba Masala. Dishes are prepared to order using the freshest ingredients sourced from local growers, with vegan, gluten and dairyfree options. At current levels, the restaurant can seat 25 people. In addition, Mughal Kitchen can cater for special events upon request. LETTERS 11 Selwyn Times readers continue to express opinion on the Government’s Three Waters reform proposals 2021 Wednesday October 20 2021 Selwyn Times 5 MARCH LINCOLN NOW SELLING FAST www.selwynsounds.co.nz THank you Margaret Holding (October 13) for verbalising my thoughts on the proposed Three Waters reform. We know that some councils are unable to spend money on infrastructure to the same level as Selwyn, but the proposal to centralise water ownership into one South Island entity is a concern. I cannot help but draw a comparison to when we lived on the North Shore of Auckland during the period when our council was forced by central government to amalgamate into the Super City. North Shore Council was healthy financially (and fostered local input) whereas Auckland was not, and hence we took on their debt. The change was immediately noticeable; for example the local contractors who maintained the parks and reserves were let go and the North Shore became a scruffy poor cousin to Auckland with a much reduced local voice on council. I believe (in spite of the Government’s assurances) that we will all end up paying more for our water in order to upgrade others infrastructure. As Margaret says, specific spending from Government to assist certain councils would be preferable. – Sue Carline-Wright, Kirwee In his newsletter Mayor Sam Broughton refers to the possibility of Selwyn’s water infrastructure being transferred to a new Government “Entity D”. “Entity D” is actually a newly-formed Government agency “Taumata Arowai” which will have a ministerially appointed board comprising 50 per cent Iwi-Maori and 50 per cent unspecified “others”. Under that will be four regional bureaucracies, again, governed by 50 per cent iwi and “others”. It appears that councils will have no say in the matter, including how much we must pay for the water services under this new structure. Central government intends to pay local councils an average of approximately 10 cents in the dollar for their water infrastructure, so this is an asset grab of stella proportions. Of course, the above information was not revealed in those childish taxpayer funded TV advertisements which insinuated that most water in New Zealand was safe, again largely untrue. This would never happen in a proper, decent democracy. – Graham Bethell, Aylesbury Broughton responds: Taumata Arowai is nothing to do with Entity D – it’s a completely separate government department. Taumata Arowai is the new national water regulatory body, which has recently taken over from the Ministry of Health. Taumata Arowai is a separate body to the entities being proposed for the three waters governance reform. Its function is to set the health standards and regulations for drinking water, wastewater and storm water and to ensure that councils – or the new entities if they replace councils – meet the required standards.
