Contractors working on the new
wastewater pipeline from Bridge
Street to Milton Road South are
ahead ofschedule, despite having
to deal with continuing high
groundwater levels.
The pipeline is being laid about five
metres below the ground, requiring
sheet piling to stabilise the trench
during construction and pumps tokeep
groundwaterout of the work area.
Ashburton District Council Infrastructure
Services Group Manager Neil McCann
saidthe $10 million projectwas on target
to be complete bythe end ofMarch and
had been given the tick of approval by
Government engineersrecently.
"We are still encountering high
groundwaterlevelsmorethanakilometre
from the Ashburton River, following the
Mayfloods. But that,andcovid lockdowns,
have not adversely affected the work
timeframe."
The section of thepipeline along Wakanui
Road and Albert Street iscomplete and
both roads have been reinstatedfortraffic,
and the intersection of Beach Road East
and Milton Road South hasalso re-opened
after the pipeline was laid across Beach
Road.
MiltonRoadSouth from theriver to Beach
Road remainsclosed to traffic (exceptfor
go ahead. Masks werewornand numbers
Mr McCann said it was onMilton Road
Ashburton Contracting Ltd (ACL) is
currently laying asectionofpipeline along
"In total, ACL and Seipp Construction
Ashburton District Council Community
Services Manager Steve Fabish said the
history of Women’s Institutes in Mid
Canterbury was on show and he hoped
people wouldpay avisit.
"There’s plenty of memories that are
part of this display and plenty of family
connections. These groups played an
important role in the social fabric of the
district overthe years."
Institute members still meet regularly to
share skills and companionship, while
having funwith drama, musicand crafts.
The museum display also includes
clothing, photographs and the RugbyCup,
which was donatedbytheMid Canterbury
Rugby Union in appreciation ofcatering
services provided by members during the
Britishand Irish Lions Tour of 1950.
"Engineering inspectors from
the Department of Internal
Affairs were onsite recently
because the Government subsidised a
large portion of the project, andtheywere
impressed with the progress of the work
thus far.
"We know the project has caused some
disruption for people, but the new
wastewaterpipeline is needed as thetown
grows and more houses connect toour
wastewaternetwork."
