Three businesses hit
by ‘ratbag’ burglars
• By Andy Brew
BURGLARS WHO ransacked
three Ferrymead businesses
have been branded “ratbags”.
Two men forced their way
into the T-Sushi and Dubba
Delux restaurants and the Caci
Clinic next door, stealing cash
and thousands of dollars of
equipment.
CCTV footage from the
T-Sushi break-in shows one of
the offenders at work, while
his co-offender stays outside,
potentially as a lookout.
To watch the video go to wwwstarnews.co.nz
Jo Nielsen
from Caci, a
beauty treatment
centre,
said the thieves
stole more
Jo Nielsen
than $13,000 of
beauty products.
“It’s just
horrible. They are ratbags, they
just don’t care who they hurt,”
she said.
Nielsen said because the
burglars had taken all of
their stock, the clinic couldn’t
operate the following day and
had to cancel all of the day’s
appointments.
The break-ins happened in
BREAK-IN: A CCTV image of a burglar stealing items from the T-Sushi restaurant in Ferrymead, and the style of
sailing jacket he was wearing.
the early hours of Thursday.
“We were fully-booked but
couldn’t open. It doesn’t just
affect our business, it affects our
clients too.”
Tiny Xu of T-Sushi said
the offenders stole the Eftpos
machine, an iPad, a laptop and
about $700.
He is hoping CCTV footage
will help identify those
responsible.
“One can be seen wearing
a very expensive Zhik sailing
jacket, so I’m hoping some
within the yachting community
will recognise the man,” Xu said.
Lyttelton police Sergeant
John Moody said that while
there was no forensic evidence
left at the scene, inquiries were
continuing.
Police were reviewing the
CCTV footage.
Smallest team member suits up for duty
• By John Cosgrove
THE SMALLEST member of the
Christchurch South Community
Patrol has received his uniform,
courtesy of the time bankers at
Manuka House, Addington.
“Ed has been a wonderful addition
to the team,” said patrol team
leader Ken Bye. “We were looking
for a different mascot and Ed fitted
right in with our plans.”
The large teddy bear is often
seen on patrol with Ken and also
appears at special occasions.
“It’s all about having fun and
reaching out to the community,”
Bye said.
But fun is far from normal
when the patrol is on duty.
“Our role is to support the
police, the council and the community.
We are there to observe,
record and report,” he said.
The Christchurch South Community
Patrol is one of seven
located in the metropolitan area.
It is the largest, with more than
60 active members, covering an
area stretching from Halswell to
Ferrymead.
Bye said they usually have
two teams out, six days a week.
Each patrol varies, as does their
tasking, which can come from
the police, the city council or
themselves.
“We all know the roads we are
driving on, so we know when
something is odd or out of place.
Bye said those little, out-ofthe-ordinary
things were often
what the patrol reported into the
police or the council.
“It could be rubbish or graffiti
– we use the snap app to inform
the council about any we see – or
it could be a tasking from the
police to keep an eye out for this
or that, to watch a particular
intersection or observe any activity
in a specific area.
“But we are not police.
Although we often have police
recruits accompanying us, it
gives them valuable comms
experience working the radios
and phones when reporting
incidents,” Bye said.
Some of those incidents can
be bizarre or dangerous, like an
individual doing push-ups in
the middle of a busy intersection
then fighting the traffic signs,
or an intoxicated man smoking
while leaning up against a
petrol pump.
Bye, a retired school teacher,
said he is rostered on patrol duty
for 12 hours a month.
“We are all volunteers, some
retirees, some young people and
others with time on their hands,
but we all want to serve our
communities.”
He said the police paid for
their fuel costs, but the rest they
had to fundraise themselves.
“And that’s where Ed comes
in, to make a connection with
the public at events to help us
fundraise and promote the
service,” Bye said.
almost 30 a October decade. Her - work 23 is November in hot demand, 2021 her serene and
meditative paintings sent all over the world.
‘This collection of paintings has been inspired by a seven day
boat trip in Fiordland that I went on last October 2020. This Kotare watching the incoming tide
complete contrast of landscape to most of the rest of New Zealand,
has started my journey of exploration into these paintings.
The wild Southern Ocean acts as a protective barrier to the rugged
land of the fiords.
A vast place of vertical steep land, dense forest and huge volumes
of precipitation and very few landing spots have saved this extensive
area from exploitation.’
At the Main exhibition Rd, opening Little River October | 030 325 at 11.30am, 1944 ‘Eye of the Calm’
Sports funding award
for Bromley School
• By John Cosgrove
DETAILING HOW Bromley
School pupils would benefit
from an injection of cash
won the school a major sports
funding award.
When principal Scot Kinley
called a selection of pupils
from the school into a special
assembly there was first a sense
of anticipation then plenty of
excitement.
‘‘They entered to find a
videographer standing there in
front of the TV,” Kinley said.
“They soon got pretty excited
when they discovered they were
being filmed for an online presentation.”
The children soon discovered
their school had won a $10,000
sports grant as the first ever
South Island winner of AA Insurance’s
Big Little Sponsorship.
“It was a big surprise for the
children, and everyone was
further surprised when teacher
Cathy Baker was selected for
a tour of Eden Park at a later
date,” he said.
Because Auckland is in Level
3, AA Insurance had to make
the announcement a virtual one.
The children gathered in
their bubbles for the reveal
party that began with a prerecorded
video from Campaign
PEDAL POWER: Bromley School principal Scot Kinley
makes a smoothie on stage during the revel party held
at the school to announce that they had won a $10,000
sports funding grant.
Ambassador former All
Black Keven Mealamu, AA
Insurance’s head of brand and
marketing Melodie Vickars, and
Eden Park chief executive, Nick
Sautner.
Organisers said they received
over 3200 nominations from
771 school nationwide and were
impressed at how the Bromley
nominations talked about
providing more opportunities
for students by upgrading
sports equipment and using the
funding to get teams to regional
events.
“Some very excited children
talked about how the money
could be used and then we all
went outside for the reveal party
which was held for the whole
school during the morning tea
break.
“They had smoothie bikes
on a stage and everyone had
the chance make smoothies by
human power and enjoying the
party,” McKinley said.
Anzac Fronds
back in place
for unveiling
With only weeks to go before their official unveiling, the
large metal fronds located at the intersection of Anzac Drive
and New Brighton Rd are attracting interest from passing
motorists. Repurposed to honour the Anzac story, the
new-look fronds will align with the Poppies over Gallipoli
sculpture on the corner of Anzac Drive and Travis Rd. The
Anzac Fronds were originally installed on Anzac Bridge light
poles, and have been in storage for several years.
Mountain bikers off to Europe to
compete against world’s best
• By John Cosgrove
EUROPE BECKONS for
two Cashmere High School
mountain bikers.
Annabel Bligh, 16, and Amelie
MacKay, 17, will swap the
classroom for the Alps next year
when they travel to Europe to
compete in a number of world
cup and local mountain bike
races there.
Travelling as part of the Team
Talley’s – Kiwi MTB Collective,
they will spend up to three
months competing in cross
country races in Germany, the
Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland,
Andorra, France and
Italy.
However, both are under no
illusions about their chances of
success.
“I’ll be racing in the highly
competitive under 23 women’s
class over there,” said Amelie.
“It’s huge in Europe with all
the top riders in the world competing
in it, but I will go over
and do the best I can and I am
looking forward to the challenge.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to
see how the UCI world cup series
works and to experience life on
the road, competing in so many
top-level races in such a short
time,” she said.
Annabel agreed it would be
an awesome adventure and a
wonderful opportunity. She
will compete in the under 19
women’s grade races.
“I was so lucky to be selected
by the collective and Scott Wood
for this chance to see how international
racing works and I will
be working hard to keep up with
the other girls,” she said.
While it will be a ‘gap year’
of sorts for Amelie before she
thinks about university, Annabel
will have a heavy schedule
of online classes to keep up with
while she travels.
“I’m only going for two
months, the school has been very
supportive and helped arrange
all the online classes I need to
study while I’m on the road, to
keep up with the subjects for
NCEA,” Annabel said.
Both are supported on this
self-funded trip by parents who
are keen mountain bikers themselves.
Amelie’s mother Tania Mac-
Kay said her daughter had been
around bikes all her life,
“Amelie used to be a serious
competitive dancer until
about three years ago when
she swapped to training for
mountain bike racing.”
series in Europe.
MacKay said they were out
looking for a new bike for
Amelie when they met cycling
coach Craig Sharratt and “he has
done a wonderful job” training
her.
“We are so proud of her and
the success she has had so far,
here and in Australia, has been
because of her hard work and
determination,” MacKay said.
Team manager Scott
Wood said the team has been set
up to take U19 and U23 riders to
Europe as a development squad.
“They will race in the UCI
MTB XCO race series from
May to September and will
also enter a number of national
and regional races as well for
experience,” Wood said.
