"Only 91% of the 6,3 billion tons of plastic that humanity has
produced is not recycled – only 99% of them couldn’t get
recycled more than once!"
The human-made polymer named
plastic has so many benefits and so
many usage areas nowadays. [1] You
can read its details of these from here.
In this article, we won’t be talking
about the benefits of plastic or
generally its harms in general, but a
very specific and extreme widespread
lie: The lie that plastics are
materials that are limitlessly
recyclable or as recyclable as other
products. We can give a few simple
statistics to understand that why it’s
an apparent lie:
Between the years 1950-2015, humanity has
produced approx. 8,3 billion tons of plastic (or 8,3
trillion kilograms); 6,3 billons tons (76%) of these
have turned into plastic waste; only 9% of this has
been recycled, only 1% of it has been recycled
more than once.
The entire plastic
produced in the world in
just 2015, 80,5% of them
is not recycled. Instead,
25,5% of it has been
given to the atmosphere
by burning, 55% of it
being used on area filling
– both of which are
factors that accelerate
climate change.
