Crying to communicate
Whether you’re anew mum, oranew dad
about to experience your first Canterbury
anniversary long weekend, oranold hand
with abit of extra knowledge, being anew
parent is like nothing else you’ll ever do. It
brings joy and surprise as you get to know
your new baby, along with many sleepless
nights, mostly from acrying baby trying to
communicate.
Crying can mean hunger oradirty or wet
nappy, or they may just need acuddle, a
song, awalkoraride to soothe them; as you
get to know them better you will learn what
each cryand sound means.
How you respond to baby’s crying will make
baby feel secure and safe but one of the
hardest times can be when your baby keeps
on crying and youcan’t work out why.
If you find yourself getting upset, it’s OKto
put your baby down gently in asafe place,
walk away and take abreak.
Your babyismorelikely to calm down when
youare feeling calm and in control.
Remember to look after your baby well you
need to look after yourself too which means
eating well, getting enough sleep, being
activeand asking forhelp when needed or if
it all becomes toomuch.
Trytosleep or rest when your babydoesand
accept broken sleep and tiredness arepartof
being aparent-especially at the beginning -
but it does get better.
