SHUTTERSTOCK There’s never a doubt that the Turks & Caicos Islands are truly “Beautiful by Nature.” It’s hard to imagine as I write this that only four years ago (mid-October 2017), we were celebrating finally getting electricity restored and connected to our rental villa in Chalk Sound. Hurricane Irma had devastated the Turks & Caicos Islands in September and at the time, it felt like nothing would ever be back to normal. I remember feeling the same way after Hurricane Ike in 2008, which was followed by a world-wide economic downturn and a Commission of Inquiry that led to a dismantlement of local government on corruption allegations. And then there was the COVID-19 pandemic. Those long months of staying at home, passing police checkpoints to go grocery shopping and prescribed outdoor exercise times seem like a bad dream. As we watched CNN every day with dread to see what new peril was to be unleashed, it was hard to imagine the Islands would ever welcome visitors again. It just goes to show the limits of our imagination, faith and belief in the resilience of the people, economy and real estate market in the Turks & Caicos Islands. The native Islanders’ ability to survive difficult circumstances should have come as no surprise. These are the descendants of slaves who were left behind after cotton farming and salt raking were no longer profitable for their owners. It still amazes me how the Belongers’ ancestors managed to create a successful living and legacy on these isolated Islands. The economy is resilient as well. The Turks & Caicos Islands are still a U.K. Overseas Territory, utilizing U.S. currency, under the oversight of a British governor and operating under a Crown Land Registry. In times of need, the U.K. has offered invaluable assistance. This has come in the form of necessary supplies and manpower after hurricanes and vaccine doses during the pandemic. The TCI was among the first Caribbean countries to have enough vaccinations for the entire population, and the effect shows to this day. What about the real estate market?
