Around40peoplecame together in theSinclair Centre to nibble on sandwiches andcake and to enjoy eachothers company overacup of tea. The treats at theposh afternoon tea werefunded by adonation from St Andrew’sChurch, Matamata, which tookupacollection to support churchpeople here caughtupinthe flooding event at the end of May. Those attending thehigh tea were entertained by musicians from the South Celtic FiddleOrchestra. Community backs campaign Geraldineisreally getting behind the Geraldine Domain Redevelopment project, Geraldine Combined Sports Association chairmanAaron McCulloughsays. The fundraising campaign is seeking to raise $100,000 before Christmas. ‘‘We were thrilled to reach the $20kmilestone over the weekend and it’sjust been going fromstrength to strength since then,” he said. The projectwas requotedin September as preparations were made to start the work, following the successful raising of $950,000for the project. ‘‘A small shortfall was identified due to cost increases since Covid19, so thegroup has nowturned to the community for help. “Our fundraising team have done a brilliant job of raising90 percent of the $1.05m needed for the redevelopment and nowweare coming to the community to ask for everyone’s help to get the last little bit so the project can be fully completed.” The group hasset up aGivealittle page and is making direct appeals to the community via their Facebook page, as well as holdingstalls at the local Fresh Choice supermarketand weeklyfarmers market. There are alsoplans for agiant dressup day in early December where all theschoolsand businesses in Geraldinehavebeenencouraged to dressup in sporting attire and there are plans for atext message to be sent, as well as posters andsigns around the town. The project, which will have benefits rightacross the sporting community of Geraldine, is backed by the Timaru District Council, as well as theclubs and users of the Domain,and is set to include a floodlit allweather multisport artificial turf surfaceoverlaidon four of the existing sixcourts to cater for awider range of sporting and recreational users, anetwork of lit pathways, moreprominent signage at all entrances,improved car parkingprovisions and lighting, improved storagefacilities for key sport and recreation hub users,and landscaping aroundthe area. Donations can be made anonymously or be recognised through atieredrecognition structure withnames displayed on a planned community supporters board for donations over $1000.
