Hockey award
WANT TO BE PART OF SOMETHING AMAZING?
Mid Canterbury Hockey’s
treasurer David Fisher was
awarded the Hockey NZ Gold
Service Award at the club’s
AGM on Tuesday.
Recipients of the award have
contributed more than 25 years
of service to hockey in avariety
of ways.
Mid Canterbury Hockey
nominated David for the award
in recognition of his valuable
contribution to hockey.
In aletter announcing the
award, Hockey NZ chief
executive Anthony Crummy said
‘‘We at Hockey New Zealand
very much appreciate the
service David has given to our
sport.’’
David has had over 50 years
involvement with hockey, first
picking up astick when he was
10yearsold in Gisborne. He
moved around with his family
living in the West Coast, Timaru
and University in Christchurch
before settling in Ashburton in
1983.
David has since held positions
on the Ashburton hockey
executive, and in 1993 he took
on the role of treasurer and has
been in that role for 27 years.
The biggest change in hockey
David has witnessed over the
years is the switch from grass to
turf when Ashburton’s hockey
turf was built in 1987.
‘‘The turf was abig one for me,
it became afaster game, amore
skilful game, it’s just so quick,’’
he said.
There had been adrop in club
membership because of covid,
but numbers are on the increase
again.
To help get the sport more
exposure in the community, the
club is looking for anew
coaching and development
officer, after the previous
person left around ayear ago.
‘‘It’snot afulltime job, but we
are looking at getting some
funding to make the position
full time, and that gets the sport
into the schools and helps
representative coaches.’’
This season the senior mens
team competed in the
Christchurch competition,
holding their own against stiff
opposition and making it to the
final.
‘‘We did well, we punch above
our weight,’’ David said.
