Senior sergeant Leigh Jenkinsgave
apolicingupdate to Ashburton
District councillors at ameeting last
week.
He said he wassatisfiedwiththe
level of police he had to staff the
requirements of the district.
‘‘I am grateful for the level of
staffingIhavenow compared to when
Ifirst arrived and we are managing
quite well,’’ he said.
Mr Jenkins saidthere was arecent
spike in volumecrime and in ashort
spreewerefive cars were taken and
11 broken into.
Two offenders, who were from out
of town, wereapprehended andwere
Young musicians rock online
From Page1
Music teacher Wayne Pannett has
taught The Ultimate Noodlers
individually andasaband for thepast
couple of years. The four boys are
agedaroundnine or 10.
And the five musicians in Herding
Catsaged about eight and nine for
about 18 months.
‘‘They are all very,very keen
musicians, enthusiastic,’’ he said.
‘‘They run to practice (twiceaweek)
theyjustcan’t wait.’’
Mr Pannett has five bands under his
wingspanning primaryand secondary
schoolaged, which bode well for
future competitions online and, the
perferred way, live in front of an
audience.
Bandquest organiserGlenn
Common said the online video
platform worked well, as it did for
Smokefree Rockquest regionally in
2020,and as it hadfor regionally
isolated RockshopBandquest acts
since 2012.
‘‘Prior to lockdown, we had arecord
264 entriesfor 2021,’’ he said.
Already more than 85 per cent of the
actsfrom the upper North Island had
submitted video footage for the
Auckland regionals.
‘‘Ideally, much of thisevent is about
givingstudents experience
performing to audiences on
professional stages, but where that
hasn’tbeen possible,video
Currently it was business as usual,
he said.
Mr Jenkins said his biggest
challenge was staff retention.
The policewere going througha
transition where older members
were going into retirement andthe
force was being boostedbynew
recruits.
‘‘The averagebirth date of apolice
The Ultimate Noodlers band made up of Isaac Phimister (vocals, guitar), Max
McKay (lead guitar), Kaylum Davis (bass) and Clarry Hooker (drums) got
second place in the online regional competition.
PHOTO SUPPLIED
submission has been aworkable
alternative,’’ he said.
‘‘Although it is disappointing forus
to have to move away from live events,
as it will be for theyoung musicians
involved, we are glad that they have
had the chance to grow their
musicianship, performance,
teamworkand communication skills
already in their preparation forthe
event,’’ he said.
