Brothers,
rugby and
books
• By Kristie Boland
BRENDAN NOLAN was
watching his 5-year-old son
reading last year when he had
a realisation: Wouldn’t it be
good if more kids this age were
reading instead of playing
PlayStation?
So he created the coaching
programme ‘Bread and Butter’,
which he’s now looking to
expand into other rugby and
sports clubs in Canterbury.
www.starnews.co.nz
SKILLS: Brothers Odin and Rikard Hanekom are part of a new rugby coaching programme ‘Bread and Butter’,
designed to encourage reading.
Police deny
claim they
are not
patrolling
busy roads
• By Fiona Ellis
POLICE REFUTE a claim they
are not adequately patrolling the
Christchurch Northern Corridor
and Cranford St.
The finger has been pointed
by Papanui-Innes Community
Board member Ali Jones, which
prompted the board to ask police
to target the area for speeding.
Jones and the board say speeding
cars are contributing to the
noise area for residents living
along the two
roads.
But Senior
Sergeant Mike
Jones said the
area was already
actively patrolled
for speeding
traffic and other
issues.
Ali Jones
“The area is already patrolled
regularly by police and we will
continue to do so,” he said.
Jones said, in her experience,
traffic was not keeping within
speed limits.
“What people are doing is not
even five or 10 ks over, there’s
actually some really dangerous
driving going on,” Jones said.
Speeding traffic was a key
cause of the ongoing noise issue
in the area, and she thought
reducing speed would help to
address residents’ concerns about
this.
Submissions support cycleway
• By Fiona Ellis
THE MAJORITY of 424
submissions support the third
and final section of the Nor’west
Arc Cycleway, a city council
analysis has revealed.
Just 12 per cent of submitters
opposed the construction of
the cycleway, which would link
Canterbury University to Jellie
Park and Harewood Rd, and
a further 23 per cent were
neutral.
However, design details
divided the submitters on the
project, which has received $10.5
million in funding as part of
the Government ‘shovel ready’
projects.
Safety and parking were frequent
concerns.
Submitters were split on the
two proposed designs for Ilam
Rd.
A one-way cycleway on each
side of the road was favoured
by 55 per cent of submitters
who selected an option, while
45 per cent preferred a two-way
cycleway on the west side of the
road.
Of those who supported the
first option, safety was a common
reason, cited by 32 submitters.
Ilam Rd residents W and PJ
Gilroy said it was obviously the
safer option.
“We will only have to look one
way for approaching cyclists as
we exit our drive and we will
have a clear view of vehicles
approaching from the right. At
present, our view is obstructed
by vehicles parked close to the
exit from our garage and drive.”
University lecturer Mads
Thomsen, who said he cycled to
the university every day, called
the first option “1000 times
better, safer, and more efficient”
as it would reduce the need for
cyclists to cross the road.
The need to retain parking
spaces was a popular reason
among those who favoured the
second option, cited by 25 submitters.
Mortlocks Lawyers Partner
Guy Mortlock favoured a twoway
cycleway, stating there was
already a shortage of parking
in the area, especially with high
demand from students.
“It is important to retain as
much parking as possible, while
still making cycling safer than it
currently is,” he said.
Safety was also cited as a factor
by 12 submitters who preferred
the second option.
Bellbird Hearing Clinic
Manager Sam Sloane stated he
was afraid a cycleway in front
of the clinic, located on the east
side of Ilam Rd would create an
increased risk of car accidents
with his elderly clients and
supported a two-way cycleway
instead.
Submitters were also split on
the proposed design options for
Aorangi Rd from the intersection
of Ilam Rd to them the
intersection of Brookside Tce.
A two-way cycleway on
the west side of the road was
preferred by 62 per cent of submitters
who selected an option,
while 38 per cent preferred a
shared path on the west side of
the road.
Safety was a top concern by
those who preferred the first option,
cited by 40 submitters.
For example, submitter Paul
Ainsworth said a shared path
would be disastrous.
“Having scooters, cycles etc
travelling at 30km/h in the same
area as pedestrians will only lead
to serious accidents,” he said.
Fourteen submitters who
chose this option also wanted to
avoid poor user behaviour they
believed would be an issue with a
shared path.
Submitter Richard Ibbitt said
his experience with shared pathways
had not been good.
“The pedestrian usually has
to give way to cyclists, not all of
whom seem to appreciate that a
shared space means that all parties
using the pathways have to
be equally considerate.”
Although the second option of
a shared path was less popular
overall, all of those who lived
along this section of the route
and made a choice between the
two designs selected this option.
Maintaining on-road car
parking was the reason cited by
30 submitters who chose this
option.
Jayne and I would like to thank you for the work you’ve done to get us where
we are today. Bit of a blur really. Every step in the process has gone into
achieving the result today that exceeded our expectations. The detail and
professionalism has been on point. Staging, photography, the video along
with the marketing campaign all leading to a great property to present to
the market. These aspects all set the scene perfectly for the open homes and
Final decision expected next year
• From page 1
Aorangi Rd resident Emma
King stated loss of car parking
was a concern.
However, safety was also cited
by five submitters who prefer
this option, including student
Aestival Britten, who travelled on
Aorangi Rd most days.
“Shared paths provide a good
option as there’s enough space
for cyclists to pass slower scooter
users and scooter users to pass
slower pedestrians without jostling
for space,” Britten said.
The planned design for the
intersection of Aorangi and
Wairakei Rds also caused a
divide among the 53 submitters
who shared their opinions.
The design put to the public
would stop through traffic and
right turns for cars travelling in
either direction along Aorangi
Rd.
Twenty-one submitters supported
the design, citing safety
benefits.
Kathy Beswick said she liked to
cycle but that the current intersection
was horrendous and she
avoided using it
“I fully support this aspect of
the plan,” Beswick said.
However, more submitters opposed
the design, with 25 people
objecting due to access issues and
predicting traffic on side roads
would increase.
Submitter Alastair Christie
said strongly opposed the blocking
off through traffic and traffic
turning right.
“This intersection as this will
make it much more difficult for
me to access a large part of my
city,” Christie said.
The cycleway section has
received $10.5 million in funding
as part of the Government ‘shovel
ready’ projects.
The cycleway hearing panel is
set to make its recommendation
to the urban development and
transport committee early next
year, with the committee to make
the final decision.
A report included in the
agenda of the hearings panel by
city council senior engagement
adviser Tessa Zant requested the
panel to recommend a one-way
cycleway is installed on each side
of Ilam Rd, varying between 1.8
and 2m wide.
It also requested a 4m shared
path from the corner of Jellie
Park up to Truman Rd, and from
there a 3m two-way cycleway
along Aorangi Rd to the intersection
with Wairakei Rd.
The report recommended the
intersection remain closed to
through traffic and right-turning
traffic.
If the project is approved, work
is expected to begin in mid to late
Low noise asphalt was
scheduled to be installed on the
was pushed back and is now
expected to be completed by
April 2022.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency said the delay is due to
a hold-up in getting one of the
key ingredients for the top coat,
epoxy resin, shipped from the
United States.
City council data taken in May
shows an average daily traffic
count of 24,741, in Cranford St
between Innes Rd and Knowles
42km/h.
NZTA traffic data shows
190,627 vehicles used the CNC
Teaching kids life principles with B.R.E.A.D.
• From page 1
What began as having the team
read for 15 minutes before training
morphed into a new way of coaching,
connecting and teaching kids
some important life lessons.
With Bread and Butter, Nolan
endeavours to go beyond just
coaching rugby skills. It’s about
teaching kids the foundations of
being a good person – the ‘bread
and butter’ of life.
The C Pups, who all attend
Heathcote Valley School, spend
15 minutes before training
reading a book of their choice
with their parents and
caregivers.
After every game, the player
of the day is presented with the
B.R.E.A.D book, which they can
take home and write a story in it
about their experiences of rugby
so far. They present it to the team
the following week and then pass
the book onto the next player of
the day.
“It’s something that keeps them
involved longer than say just half
an hour after the game, something
to be proud of,” Nolan,
who works for the Lyttelton Port
Company, said.
Bread and Butter is not just for
rugby.
“It’s just the principles of being
good people. In rugby, they say
good people make good rugby
players. But don’t wait until
they’re 20, why don’t we start
putting this to the kids when
they’re young.”
“If they get their bread and
butter right, they can go from
there. It’s giving them the
opportunity from a young age.”
The programme isn’t just for
the kids – it also connects parents
and caregivers.
Jenna Timoti’s six year-old
son Mason Boyd has played two
seasons for the C Pups. Timoti
said Mason is a very capable
reader, but getting him to read
was a chore. Bread and Butter
helped Mason see reading as
something that’s just part of
training.
Timoti said she has seen a
difference in her son’s behaviour
since he has been coached by
Nolan.
“Mason is someone who is
easily distracted and needs
structure. I can see a difference
in his confidence, he’s so
determined and the values he
has learned have made him
more empathetic. He’s a lot more
caring,” she said.
Similarly, Heathcote Valley
School principal Bruce Ellison
said he has seen a change in
the kids since they have been
coached by Nolan.
“I’ve seen them grow as
people and I’ve seen their
relationships with each other
AVID: The C Pups under-6
team reading the B.R.E.A.D
book together, and their
coach Brendan Nolan.
Nolan also coaches the
Christchurch seniors, the
seniors sevens and Waitaha
Matua, the Canterbury
Maori men’s team.
grow,” said Ellison.
“It’s a no brainer, why haven’t
we been doing something like
this all along?”
Nolan said a programme like
this would have made him look
at rugby differently.
“When I was playing, it was
just about showing up and
playing the game, but I think this
is more of a deeper connection.”
THE C PUPS: Before training sessions, both children and
parents spend 15 minutes reading.
• From page 7
Nolan wants that connection to
be fostered.
“It teaches kids to care for the
area, the grounds, care for the
opposition and each other. It’s
contagious and its something
that needs to be nurtured,” he
said.
Nolan wants to break down the
club versus club mentality, and
connect coaches as well.
Mainland Football interim
chief executive Martin Dodgson
loves the idea of Bread and Butter
and believes most sports face the
same challenges.
“We love the concept and the
story behind it . . . The concept of
giving kids ownership over what
they do,” he said.
Dodgson thinks Bread and
Butter captures the essence of
sport.
“Sport teaches us lessons and
those lessons can be hidden
deep but [Brendan] brings these
lessons to the surface,” he said.
“The scoreboard would suggest
who the winner or loser is, but
this teaches kids what a real
‘winner’ is and what success
looks like.”
Nolan now hopes to take
the coaching programme
Canterbury-wide and has had
positive feedback from clubs and
other sports organisations.
FIRST PLACE: Marty and Naomi with their Hospitality New Zealand award for best local
bar and eatery.
Strowan bar and eatery
takes out top NZ award
• By Fiona Ellis
A NATIONAL competition has
found the country’s best local bar
and eatery, located in the heart of
Strowan.
The Elmwood Trading Company
took the award during a
virtual Hospitality New Zealand
Awards for Excellence 2021
prizegiving event.
Owner Marty Fuller said he
was “absolutely wrapt” with the
result.
“Given that it’s a national event
and it had a record number of
entries, even to be shortlisted
is significant. To win is exceptional,”
Fuller said.
He and wife Naomi had owned
the business for three-and-a-half
years and aimed to create a place
with good food and drink options,
and events such as quizzes.
“We don’t get any tourists,
we’re completely reliant on people
from the area.
“We have a great bunch
of regulars.”
With over 40 years in hospitality,
the win was a culmination of
his and others’ experience.
A national awards dinner
was originally set to be held in
Auckland in September, but was
rescheduled due to Covid-19.
The prizegiving was then
made into a virtual event
attended by about 70 people
from Christchurch, including
Elmwood staff and Fuller’s
family.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.
RAY WHITE PAPANUI NEWS
Ray White Papanui & Little Ray of Giving
Ray White Papanui is extremely proud
to partner with the Christchurch
Kidney Society for our Little Ray of
Giving campaign this Christmas.
The Christchurch Kidney Society
(CKS) was formed in 1973, initially
as the New Zealand Kidney, Dialysis
and Transplant Society. Their aim is
to provide support for Christchurch
patients and families of patients who
are either approaching or have already
reached end-stage renal failure.
This year the Christchurch Kidney Society
would greatly appreciate your donation of:
• Gifts for teenagers
• Gifts for adults
• Gifts for families
• Gifts for children
Please add a wee note on the donation
Privacy Commission Laws & Property Management
The Privacy Commission recently
released guidelines around what
information a landlord can legally
request from a tenant when they are
applying for a rental property and on
the surface this can look like a scary
prospect. However, as in most of the
changes in legislation we come across
in our industry, when you dig a little
deeper and have processes in place, it is
in fact not quite what you first thought.
Discrimination has of course, and
rightly so, never been allowed when
choosing your tenants and this includes
anything from what race, religion,
sexual orientation or anything else
which will of course not actually affect
the tenancy.
The ethos of the new legislation is
essentially that landlords are only
permitted to collect information
needed for a lawful purpose connected
to finding tenants and managing
tenancies.
The major change which has got
landlords up in arms is that we
are no longer allowed to request
employment status at the first part
of the application process. This of
course upset landlords as it does seem
reasonable and not in breach of privacy
or any human rights to ascertain
whether a tenant can pay the rent each
week.
However, as I mentioned when you
Feature Properties
as to who the gift would be appropriate
for so they can make sure it gets to the
right person.
Stuck on ideas?
Something to read, nice toiletries, a
small puzzle or game, a gift card for
Apple or similar, treats (in boxes and
labelled in case of food allergies), toys
for children, crossword, sudoku and
word find books, as well as anything
else you think would be lovely for
someone who is receiving dialysis.
Please deliver your gifts to Ray White
Papanui, Level 1, 7 Winston Avenue,
Papanui (above Black & White Coffee
Cartel).
The last day for gifts to be delivered is
5.30pm, Monday 20 December 2021.
Thank you for your kind support.
look further into the legislation and
weigh up when it is reasonable to
collect essential information, at a later
point it can be done. What this means
is that a tenant application process will
become a four step process, as opposed
to collecting all of the information on
the initial application form it will have
to be staggered.
It should look something like this:
Step one – tenant arranges to view the
property. At this stage they can offer
to submit an application, however this
cannot be requested by the landlord.
You can only collect their name and
contact information.
Step two – the tenant completes an
application form with their basic
personal information, i.e. name &
contact information, proof of identity,
whether they are over 18 (but not their
age), contact details for referees and
consent to contact them and how many
people would be living at the property,
plus other details.
Step three - when you vet a shortlist
before deciding who the property will
be offered to. This is where we can ask
questions in regards to affordability of
the rent. This could include a payslip
or letter from an employer or work
and income and evidence of rental
payments from a previous tenancy.
Be careful here however as you are not
allowed to ask for evidence of spending
habits, bank statements etc.
Step four comes into effect once the
tenant has been offered the property
and you are completing the tenancy
agreement. Now it is permitted to
ask things like vehicle details, an
address for service and other similar
information.
So what is already a thorough due
diligence process can continue, it is
just a longer process. Of course a
tenant is able to provide you with any
information they would like to, we can
just not ask for it!
The Privacy Commission announced
that they are setting up a dedicated
phone line in March 2022 where
tenants can call and report any
breaches of The Privacy Act and The
Human Rights Act and I have a feeling
they may be rather busy given what
I often read in some rental property
advertising.
It is quite a complex process so if you
have any questions to ensure you don’t
get it wrong, please feel free to give
me a call. As I always say, training and
knowledge are the key to successfully
owning an investment property.
