Burglaries drop, but pot plant theft up
• By Emily Moorhouse
BURGLARIES IN the eastern
suburbs for the first nine months
of this year have dropped
compared to last year.
Latest data released to
Pegasus Post under the Official
Information Act showed a total
of 787 reported burglaries from
January to September this year,
compared to 855 for the same
period last year.
Sergeant Jim Currie of
the New Brighton police
station said while the Eastern
suburbs weren’t seeing more
burglaries than other suburbs in
Christchurch, there seemed to be
a recent trend of pot plants being
stolen around the area but police
weren’t sure why.
He said police have been
asking their partners in
Community Watch to assist
them with their patrols as well as
getting police staff out and about
where possible.
Currie said if people were
going away it was best to ask
a neighbour, friend or family
member to keep an eye on the
property and to clear the mail
box if possible.
“A cluttered mailbox is a good
sign no-one is home,” he said.
“Don’t leave any tools lying
around as these could be used
to break in and definitely don’t
leave anything valuable in
plain sight.”
Normally police would
expect to see a rise in residential
and commercial burglaries
over the holiday periods with
people going away, but Currie
said with lockdowns and the
new traffic light system,
police weren’t sure if this
would have an effect
on burglaries.
programme. The week-long residency culminated in a community concert, with pupils showcasing their skills. From right to left, year five and six
Community hub to open soon
THE OLD Shirley Boys’ High
School gym, which is being
transformed into a communitybased
sports and recreational
centre will open its doors early
next year.
The North Pde building
became empty when the high
school moved to a new purposebuilt
school in New Brighton
in May 2019. The school was
demolished, leaving only the
gym behind.
A new school
is being built
on the site for
Pareawa Banks
Avenue Primary
School which
will use the
Kate Latimer
sports and recreation
centre,
along with other school. Sports
clubs and community groups
can hire the venue and outdoor
pitches in the evenings.
The gym, function centre and
artificial turf, which is collectively
known as Avon Hub will be
managed by Eastern Community
Sport and Recreation.
ECSR community sport
manager Kate Latimer said
they want as many community
organisations as possible to use
the centre.
When the gym was a part of
the school it was used by hockey,
basketball, volleyball, futsal and
CENTRE: The Avon Hub work site.
badminton clubs.
Latimer said she was looking
forward to welcoming these
clubs back and plans to add
many other activities.
“We are keen to ensure this
valuable local asset, which served
the high school over several dec-
PHOTO: KATE LATIMER
ades, is retained for community
use,” she said.
“We’ve worked alongside
the Ministry of Education and
Pareawa Banks Avenue Primary
School to keep the facility thriving
so we can maximise its use
by local people.”
Latimer said ECSR wanted to
open the doors to everyone in
Shirley and will welcome ideas
from anyone about how they can
best make it work for the community.
With two schools alongside,
there are options for after school
and holiday programmes. Offices
in the building present the
opportunity to sublet, while a
kitchen next to the function
room will be useful for social
events.
Latimer said catering for the
disabled and special needs community
was one of the goals and
the buildings proximity to the
Burwood Spinal Unit meant it
will be opening its doors to this
community.
Avon Hub will also be home to
Canterbury Wheelchair Rugby
and TIMA, which provides intergrated
physical opportunities
for young people with adapted
needs.
Several other local early
childhood centres, primary,
intermediate and secondary
schools which comprise the
Ministry’s Ōtākaro Kāhui Ako
group will also have access to the
facilities.
From a humble start to nationwide
• By Emily Moorhouse
LIFE-LONG NEW Brighton
resident Eleanor Bodger is
committed to helping the older
community.
So much so that she started up
her own business providing the
elderly with important information
to guide them with life
decisions.
Almost 25 years down the
track, the business is thriving
and is run by Eleanor, 69, and
her daughter Esther Perriam, 44.
Eleanor had worked with older
people throughout her career
as a nurse before re-enrolling at
university to become a qualified
social worker.
After 10 years of social work,
specialising in elderly care, she
realised how hard it was to provide
older people with unbiased
information on residential care
specific to each individual.
One afternoon she was talking
to her co-worker about the stress
of helping elderly without having
knowledge on a range of services
to chose from that caters to each
person’s needs.
Her co-worker said he’d heard
of this amazing thing called
the internet that was going to
“change the world”.
With no computer at home, Eleanor
went straight to the library
to study what the worldwide web
was and, with her co-worker,
they decided to start up their
own online directory business
DUMPING
DUO: Eleanor Bodger and daughter Esther Perriam say the idea behind Eldernet is trying
to create a world they would be happy to age in.
dedicated to helping elderly
make informed decisions. They
called it Eldernet.
They knew their idea was going
to be a nationwide project
and talked to DHBs and the
Ministry of Health about their
plans but was told it wouldn’t
work because the internet
“wouldn’t be a thing.”
Determined to bring their
idea to life, the pair kept pitching
their vision until a manager
within the Canterbury District
Health Board gave them support
and requested funding for the
business.
With this tick of approval
Eleanor threw herself into
learning the ins and outs of the
internet and after three years
bought out her co-worker from
the business.
She learned how to do basic
coding and upload it in the
middle of the night over dial up
internet.
She also started working with
graphic designers and programmers
and naturally, the business
began to grow.
Eldernet was born from humble
beginnings, as Eleanor ran
it from a bedroom in her family
home.
After seven years Esther joined
her and the pair moved the business
to a rental property Eleanor
and her husband owned on
Keyes Rd.
After the earthquakes hit,
Eleanor and Esther relocated
to the old South New Brighton
Medical Centre while the rental
property was getting repaired.
After 18 months they were
able to move back to the Keyes
Rd rental property where they
stayed for five years, during that
time welcoming five new staff
members to the team.
With seven employees in one
house and the business expanding,
they quickly outgrew the
space and decided to move to a
commercial building.
“It feels a bit strange going to
an office rather than going to the
house next door,” said Esther.
“It helps the whole team see
the scope that we’ve got for
growth.”
Staying in New Brighton was
important for Eleanor and Esther
as they described themselves
as Brighton people “through and
through” with four generations
having lived in the area.
we are today. Bit of a blur really. Every step in the process has gone into
achieving the result today that exceeded our expectations. The detail and
professionalism has been on point. Staging, photography, the video along
with the marketing campaign all leading to a great property to present to
the market. These aspects all set the scene perfectly for the open homes and
visits leading to today’s outstanding auction result. Quiet night tonight but
sure there will be a few celebratory drinks later in the week.
“New Brighton is a suburb that
has a real sense of community
and spirit,” Esther said.
“For us this is our way of saying
here we are and we’re making a
long-term commitment to the
area.”
Eldernet’s new home has a history
behind it, being the former
Ara Institute building where
the upstairs was used as accommodation
for workers during the
earthquake rebuild.
Now, the building has been
renovated to a working space for
their growing team.
Looking back on the journey
of Eldernet’s growth, Eleanor
was pleased the business was
still continuing on the path she
intended it to be in the first
place.
“Providing help for older
people has always been the goal,”
she said. “It didn’t surprise me
that it got this big, it almost felt
a bit ahead of its time at the
beginning.”
THE REDCLIFFS Residents
Association is “extremely disappointed”
with the decision
against removing the rocks at
Clifton beach.
The group, which has been
advocating for the removal of the
rocks for more than two years,
said the beach is nothing like it
used to be before.
The rocks were brought to the
surface of the beach following
construction along the Coastal
Pathway and Main Rd.
In 2019 the city council sieved
the excess sand and removed
rocks larger than 100mm from
the site, however, the
Redcliffs Residents Association
said there were
still rocks present.
The decision comes
after the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote
Community Board met
with the Christchurch
Coastal Pathway Group
[the group].
Christine
DECISION:
Rocks will
remain
on Clifton
beach near
the Coastal
Pathway.
Residents disappointed
rocks will stay on beach
• By Emily Moorhouse
During the meeting the group
advised the board that the rocks
“are not going to be a problem in
the future and it would be pointless
to remove the rocks and a
waste of council’s funds.”
However, Redcliffs
Residents Association
chairwoman Christine
Toner said the beach can’t
be enjoyed like it was before
as the rocks prevent
people from walking
along it.
“People would sit on
the beach in the sun and
enjoy the smooth sand but
now that’s not possible,” she said.
“It seems they’ve washed their
hands of a problem they’ve
caused.”
CSO music residency a hit with pupils
• By Emily Moorhouse
DRUMS, UKULELES and
to celebrate learning and music.
Bromley School pupils put on
the show after hosting a team
of Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
musicians for a week of
jamming and learning together.
The school joined up with
six musicians as part of the orchestra’s
Karawhiua! Let’s Play!
Residency programme, where
teams of musicians go to different
schools in the South Island to
work with pupils on music-based
projects.
CSO co-ordinator Francesca
Lee said the pupils learn to write
lyrics and new chords and even
create instruments out of found
objects.
The projects are designed to
help pupils’ develop their creativity,
teamwork, confidence, and
enjoyment of the arts.
Year five pupils Phoenix
board to ask
police to target
the area for speeding.
Jones and the board say speeding
cars are contributing to the
noise area for residents living
along the two roads.
But Senior Sergeant Mike Jones
said the area was already actively
patrolled for speeding traffic and
other issues.
“The area is already patrolled
regularly by police and we will
continue to do so,” he said.
Jones said, in her experience,
KEEPING THE RHYTHM: Year four pupils with CSO
principal first violin Jonathan Tanner playing at the
school concert.
“I liked performing in front of
everyone to show how much I
love music,” said Roman.
“I liked learning with everyone
that taught us,” said Phoenix.
Principal Scot Kinley said
it was fantastic the children
were able to express themselves
through music, and the quality
traffic was not keeping within
speed limits.
“What people are doing is not
even five or 10 ks over, there’s
actually some really dangerous
driving going on,” Jones said.
Speeding traffic was a key
cause of the ongoing noise issue
in the area, and she thought
reducing speed would help to
address residents’ concerns about
this.
Low noise asphalt was
scheduled to be installed on the
CNC last month, but the project
was pushed back and is now
expected to be completed by
April 2022.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency said the delay is due to
a hold-up in getting one of the
key ingredients for the top coat,
epoxy resin, shipped from the
United States.
City council data taken in May
shows an average daily traffic
count of 24,741, in Cranford St
between Innes Rd and Knowles
of what they had presented after
a short time of learning was
great.
“The kids are trying things
they haven’t before, which is
fantastic,” he said. “I’m really
excited that this opportunity was
given to them.”
CSO principal bassoon player
St, with an average speed of
42km/h.
NZTA traffic data shows
190,627 vehicles used the CNC
last week, a daily average of
27,232.
The average speed of northbound
traffic was 101.3km/h
and the average speed of
southbound traffic was
98.7km/h.
Jones said the community
board was waiting for more traffic
information but her impression
was still that speed was a
problem.
She questioned the location
point at which speed data was
gathered, saying people were
speeding before reaching the
100km/h zone of the CNC.
“People roar along the motorway
even before the QE II
turn-off.”
Winters Rd resident Alan
Johnson said the noise was stressful
to those who lived in the area,
and the low noise asphalt was
BANG: Year five pupils Phoenix and Roman with CSO
principal percussion Roanna Funcke.
Selena Orwin, who has been a
member of the orchestra since
1987, said they received amazing
feedback from the school.
“The school said the kids have
been very engaged,” she said.
“All round it’s a very worthwhile
project.”
Orwin said Bromley was the
the only solution.
“If they slow [traffic] down I
don’t think it will totally address
the noise issue,” Johnson said.
sixth school they had been to
this year and it was great to see
the children have fun with music
Brighton up your
Christmas
prize pool
Many New Brighton business have
joined together to offer customers a
prize pool opportunity, just in time for
Christmas.
After the success of networking with
the Carnaby Lane Crew of business
owners previously working together
on markets and music events in the
laneway, Donna Stewart, owner of
Switch Café and a long time New
Brighton resident, floated the idea
that more New Brighton businesses
could connect through a collaborative
campaign.
Christmas shopping was the perfect
opportunity to ask them to jump on
board and promote the ‘support local’
businesses contest.
With the worldwide pandemic,
shopping patterns have changed due to
all the revised government systems and
restrictions put in place and shoppers
are moving more and more online for
their shopping experience.
The Brighton Up your Christmas
Prize Pool is about showcasing
local products and services in this
neighbourhood.
Campaign Details: Participating
businesses display a poster in their
window. The poster graphics and design
have been donated by Talya @ kahu_
creative.com who has created a fun and
very “Brighton” inspired poster.
Each participating business has
donated an item or service to the prize
pool, either as a voucher or product.
Example: a gift basket, a bunch of
flowers and so much more.
Several of the participating businesses
include: The Burger Joint, Paper Plus,
The Bin Inn, IT Stuffed, Level One, 105
Collective, Unichem Village Pharmacy
and more...
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.
