approved by the KaiapoiTuahiwi Community Board last month. IMAGE: WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICT COUNCIL
By DAVID HILL
Satisfy Food Rescue is ‘‘excited’’ the
proposed KaiapoiCommunityHub is a
step closertobecomingareality.
The KaiapoiSeftonCommunity Board
approved afinal draft concept last month
for the proposedhub, which will be
located between Charters Streetand
Courtenay Drive.
‘‘We are excitedtobepart of a
community collaboration and to get a
dedicated base built for us,’’ SatisfyFood
Rescuemanager Stef van Meer says.
‘‘We are very luckytobe able to
connect with likeminded groups to
develop aspacethat worksfor us and for
the community.’’
Satisfy Food Rescue is one of three
groupsworking with the Waimakariri
District Council to developthe
community hub concept.
The other groups are the Kaiapoi
Croquet Cluband the KaiapoiMenz
Shed, but thereisplenty of room for more
groups, WaimakaririDistrict Council
community and recreation manager
Chris Brown says.
‘‘We are agrowing district and it’s
getting moredifficult for hobby groups to
buy land and set up abase.
‘‘Thisisawaycouncilcan help to
ensurethere’s opportunitiesfor social
wellbeing.’’
DeputyMayor NevilleAtkinsonsays
the community hub will be ‘‘a greatasset
for the community’’.
‘‘The croquet club has beeninalmost
dire circumstances since the
earthquakes and the menzshed needs a
permanent home, as they have been
shifted round afew times, and Satisfy just
keepsgrowing.’’
Mr Brown says the concept planwas
completedfollowing consultation on a
preliminary conceptplan earlier in the
year.
The new conceptplan is out for
consultation until December 13.
Community feedback will determine
whether more consultation is needed
before the council notifies the resource
consent next year.
Mr Brown says all goingwell,the
consent process couldbecompleted by
the middle of next year, allowingwork to
beginonconstructingthe site.
Acharitable trust will be establishto
run the site, own the buildingsand be
responsible for insurance and
maintenance and have an agreement
with the clubs to use the assets.
‘‘We have spoken to external funding
providersand theylike that model, as it
meansthe trust can show them the wider
communitybenefits,’’MrBrown says
Whilethe council willdevelop the site,
including landscapingand installing
walk ways and carparking, the trust and
the clubs will be responsible for securing
funding for buildings.
‘‘Thesite will stillbeanopen
communityspace, although obviously you
won’tbeable to walk on the croquet
greens,’’ Mr Brown says. ‘‘People will be
abletofreely walkaround the rest of the
siteasthey do now for walkingthe dog or
for general exercise.’’
Sitesecurity, lighting, the orientation
of the buildings, building materials and
aesthetics will all be considered as part
of the consent process.
