PHOTO:SUPPLIED Xmas market defies Covid The grinchmay have struck Santaparades and Christmas parties off the list this year, but he won’t be touching the Sefton Christmas Harvest Market. Organisers Cam and Melissa Booker have confirmed the event will be going aheadonChristmas Eve. Held annually, the Sefton Christmas Harvest Market invites attendees to dig theirown potatoes and pick theirown peas from the crops at the Grown market garden at Sefton. Localfood and beverage producers will also attendsocustomers can snapuplast minute goodies for the Christmasdinner table. ‘‘TheSefton Christmas Harvest Market is an annual tradition for alot of families,’’ Mr Booker says. ‘‘It’s areally fun community day and we’restoked that we can hold the eventthis year,when so many other things have been cancelled.’’ The outdoor event can go ahead under both Alert Level 2rulesand under the new ‘trafficlight system’, withvaccine certification requirements in place if necessary. ‘‘If this year has shown us anything, it’s that thingscould completely change between now and Christmas Eve,’’Mr Booker says. ‘‘Butwehave decided that as it stands rightnow, we are goingahead and we are confident it willhappen.’’ The Bookers started the Sefton Christmas Harvest Market in 2013and it has been held every Christmas Eve since. The venue,Grown, is amarket garden ownedbythe Bookerfamily. The Bookers sell freshproduce at selected farmersmarkets throughout Canterbury and have found aniche in homedelivered fruit and vegetableboxes, whichtook off duringlast year’s lockdown. The 2021 Sefton Christmas Harvest Market runs from8am to 12pmonFriday, December24, at 783 MarshmansRoad, Sefton, NorthCanterbury. Entrance is by goldcoin donation, with proceeds to support the SeftonSchool PTA. Attendeesshould bringtheir own garden forksand buckets. North Canterbury zonemanager AndrewArps saidthe meetingswere a goodopportunity to meetwith arange of residents,businessowners and councillors. ‘‘Wesharedupdatesonkey work programmes thatwere relevant for each zone–focusing on localriverworks and catchment approaches foreachzone,’’ he said. ‘‘The catchment approach is amuch moreconnectedway of looking at the workbeing undertaken in each zone, so it was great to be able to discusssome of the currentcatchment projectswiththe community. ‘‘We’ve gotaway to go,but there’s opportunity allaround fortaking an integratedcatchment approach to regeneration work.’’ Akey discussion point at the Kaikoura event was theWaiauToa Clarencecatchment. ‘‘There’s work being undertakenby us, Land InformationNew Zealand, a local trapping project supported by Te RunangaoKaikouraand by local landowners,’’ Kaikoura zone delivery leadKevin Heays said. ‘‘Different projects focusingon different thingsindifferent areas of the catchment,all combining to achievethe catchment approach. ‘‘The WaiaToa /Clarenceproject is a catchment of land, water,and people.’’ Mr Heays saysthe project illustrates whatcan be achieved whendifferent groups work together. ‘‘MiddleCreek, another catchment project, has some great research behind it, so we’relooking at how we can support that community in thatspace Easy Storage EasilyFodsAway Folds Effective Workout over the nextsix monthsorso, ultimately,tocreate acatchment approachacross the Kaikoura Flats.’’ TheWaiaueventsaw lots of discussionwith thecommunity around willow removal workand howthis fits in with the regional river works programme. He said thereisstillasignificant way to go in terms of weedmanagement in thearea. ‘‘Beingable to putamapupwith dots alloveritshowingthe widerangeof projectshappening in thecatchment wasreally helpful in illustrating howa catchmentapproach works. ‘‘Thewillows remain oneofthe biggestconcernsfor the community, anditwas great to heartheirthoughts about some alternativemethods for control. ‘‘As plansdevelopfor the removal of willow, we’ll be sharing these withthe community.’’ TheWaimakariri event happened the same dayEnvironmentCanterbury adopted therecommendationsfrom the independenthearingcommissioners on Plan Change 7tothe Land andWater Regional Plan and PlanChange2tothe Waimakariri River Regional Plan. Crs ClaireMcKay andGrant Edge attendedthe meeting to update attendees directly. ‘‘Thesechangesfurthercontribute to havingcatchmentbasedapproachesfor water management in Canterbury,’’ Waimakaririand HurunuiWaiau zone deliveryleadMarcoCataloni said.
