Limits may apply. WDL-4303 FCST<strong>08</strong>12 TWO AUTHORS, alumni and former rural field cadets, whose work helped document the history of Lincoln University, have been recognised. Chancellor Bruce Gemmell presented Bill Harrington, of Christchurch, and Vince Ashworth, of Morrinsville, with Lincoln University medals for “meritorious voluntary service supporting the institution’s cultural fabric and reputation”. Harrington was selected as a rural field cadet for the 1954 intake at Lincoln and graduated with the elite Diploma in Valuation and Farm Management. He pursued a valuation career and he says the course at Lincoln shaped his life. His chosen profession gave him many experiences. He became a visiting lecturer in rural valuation at Otago University, editor of the NZ Valuers’ Journal and was appointed to the land valuation division of the High Court. He was also a trustee and farming director for a large pastoral conglomerate for many years. Harrington’s Lincoln University medal citation refers to two books he has helped compile and edit. Lincoln and Beyond: Memories of Student Days, Lives We Led was published in 2013 and Herbie’s Boys: A History of the Rural Field Cadet Scheme 1941-1971 was published in 2016 by the rural field cadet history group he chaired. The title Herbie’s Boys refers to top public servant Herbert Caselberg, founder of the rural field cadet scheme that seeded New Zealand’s land-based public service departments with Lincoln graduates for three decades. Both are authors, with Harrington’s published work including Herbie’s Boys: A History of the Rural Field Cadet Scheme 1941-1971. Gemmell says he always keeps a copy of Herbie’s Boys close by as an essential reference work about Lincoln and a source of inspiration. Meanwhile, Ashworth’s book, A Full Life, chronicles his personal life and public career and provides an enduring autobiographical record of a notable Lincoln University alumnus, his family, friends and colleagues. The chapters on Vince’s student years at Lincoln in the 1950s, with photos from the time, are a “valuable contribution to the cultural heritage of the university”, said the chancellor. Like Harrington, Ashworth graduated with a Diploma in Valuation and Farm Management in 1955, and was runner-up for the gold medal (dux). In the 1960s he established a farm management consultancy in Morrinsville, the first of its kind in New Zealand. He went on to be heavily involved in international agricultural consultancy work and in 1976 joined the permanent staff of the World Bank as a senior agriculturalist, staying for 11 years and working on projects in some 30 countries, including Afghanistan. Receiving the awards, Ashworth recalled his era at Lincoln when polished shoes, punctuality and discipline were the order of the day, expected by the stern director, professor Eric Hudson. Harrington said the valuation and farm management diploma course was “wonderful” and he felt “very fortunate” to have been selected for it. Sons and a grandson have followed Harrington as students at Lincoln University.
