PHOTOS: NEWSLINE ‘Absolute legend’ receives e-bike for volunteer work IAN MORRIS has been looking after Victoria Park’s visitor centre gardens for more than 20 years as a volunteer ranger. Three days a week Ian slogs up Dyers Pass Rd on his push bike to tend to the gardens and his efforts have been recognised by his fellow park rangers. They surprised Ian with a new electric bike to help him with his ride to the park, describing him as an “absolute legend.” Delighted by the generosity of the gift, Ian named the bike Black Beauty before taking it for a quick spin. “I can get rid of all my old bikes now,’’ he said. Ranger Nigel Morritt, who works closely with Ian, told him the bike was a small thank you for all his years of hard work. “You’re a very important part of our little family up here,” he said. “You are an absolute legend. We just want to say thanks because you have done an awful lot of work for us and you are a very special person.’’ City council parks programmes and partnerships manager Kate Russell said Ian has special intellectual needs but he has never let that slow him down and he’s an inspiration to the park rangers and other volunteers. “Like all of us, Ian isn’t getting any younger and it has been getting harder for him to make the ride up to Victoria Park,” she said. “He loves the routine of coming to the park and it’s really good for his well-being, so we decided it was time Ian went electric.” Russell said with an e-bike, Ian can remain part of the team at Victoria Park and stay connected to the cycling community on the Port Hills. Ian will still be able to ride up Dyers Pass Rd, but it will be gentler on his body. “The bike is Ian’s gateway to the world so having an e-bike will also make his day-to-day life easier and help him stay connected with his family,” said Russell. Russell said the park rangers set up a Givealittle page to raise money for the e-bike and persuaded Ecoquip NZ Ltd to donate an accessory package to go with it. A significant number of the donations received through the Givealittle page came from the mountain biking community who shared the campaign link on their social media networks.
