joy of Christmas
A TOY giveaway has helped
make Christmas a little
brighter for 172 children who
will wake up to the joy of
wrapped presents under their
tree.
Birthright Canterbury’s
annual Toy Day supports the
THAT’S A WRAP: Birthright Canterbury connect and learn volunteer co-ordinator Loraine van der Colff, of
Northwood, helps out at Birthright Canterbury’s annual Toy Day.
co-ordinator Loraine van der
Colff said she loves seeing
the joy the day brings to local
families.
“People are always very
grateful to be able to receive
gifts for their children,” the
Northwood resident said.
“They walk out with
big smiles and are very
appreciative.”
Plans to
upgrade
recreation
area to be
opened for
discussion
• By Fiona Ellis
PLANS TO upgrade a popular
outdoor recreation area are set to
be opened for public feedback in
the new year.
The Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
approved the release of the city
council’s Roto Kohatu Reserve
draft reserve management plan at
a meeting on Monday.
The Sawyers Arms Rd site has
a high number of annual visitors
who use the reserve, which contains
two lakes, for watersports,
swimming and picnics.
Board chairwoman Bridget
Williams said the reserve was
popular but needed to keep pace
with demand.
“It’s a wonderful resource and
well used by the community . . .
but some planning and development
defiantly needs to happen,”
Williams said.
“It’s something that has been on
the board’s radar for a long time.”
From late January 2022 until
late March 2022 the city council
will consult the public on how
the site should be used, with the
draft plan stating increasing usage
means greater competition for
different uses.
Multiple sports facility
buildings are being considered at
locations across the reserve.
Love of carting rolls on
MALCOLM Johnson is keeping
the wheels turning on a hobby
that has interested him since
childhood.
The Kevin Hickman Retirement
Village resident supplies
charities with handmade racing
carts for kids.
He has already built 17 of
them in the past five years, the
more recent models made in the
garage of his retirement village
townhouse.
In Taranaki, where Johnson
grew up, he remembers every
kid had access to a cart.
Races were a regular feature
in a youngster’s summer, and
also a hobby encouraged by
the scouting movement, which
both he and wife Margaret were
involved in.
“All country kids had carts,
even though they were depleted
looking structures,” Johnson
said.
“We couldn’t get wheels
. . . we used to pinch the
wheels off lawnmowers and
later put them back on.”
Now his search for
modern-day equivalent
parts usually takes place in
secondhand goods stores,
such as the EcoShop on
Blenheim Rd.
He buys pushchairs and
toddler’s buggies, so he can
utilise the wheels and frames
with other components to
make a quality cart.
Charities that have benefited
from his work include the Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre
and the Women’s Refuge, as
well as children’s fund-raising
efforts.
To help pay for the ongoing
projects, Johnson relies on supporters,
such as fellow members
of the Pegasus Daylight Lodge,
which he belongs to.
The completed carts, painted
by a friend, Jimmy Roscoe, are
brightly coloured and solid.
However, given the enthusiastic
play of
HANDMADE: Malcolm
Johnson is keeping the
wheels turning on a hobby
that has interested him
since childhood.
youngsters, sometimes repairs
are necessary.
Johnson is enthused about life
and helping others, and one of
his retirement projects has been
to assist those less fortunate.
Overall, he feels sorry that
society is divided into haves
and have-nots.
“I’ve always wanted
fairness for all
people, coupled
with absolute
enthusiasm for
anything
I’ve believed
We were so impressed with Cameron and his team, we knew we were in
great hands with their professionalism and amazing organisational skills.
Everything ran so smoothly and efficiently. Cameron certainly knows what
was happening with the market at the time we had our house listed and
this was a huge part of us selling our home with him and our successful sale.
A huge thank you to Cameron and his amazing team Sam and Lisa, I would
Upgrades could include slipway
• From page 1
“There has been a lack of planning
to accommodate the demand
for club facilities,” the draft plan
stated.
At one of the two lakes – Rua –
rubble may be cleared and a beach
created at the northern end, and a
slipway and jetty may be installed.
Fishing structures around the
lake will be removed although
selected fishing platforms may
remain.
At Lake Tahi, and an extended
canoe polo area and additional
car parking is proposed.
Additional walking tracks, road
upgrades and wildlife planting are
also being considered.
A hearings panel will hear
any submissions that are
received on the management
plan, decide the extent to which
comments are accepted or not,
Baking and
for all ages
• From page 1
In spite of Covid-19 causing
financial difficulties for many this
year, the Toy Day appeal saw Cantabrians
supporting the cause with
hundreds of donated gifts for local
families.
Items were donated from local
businesses and service clubs,
former Birthright children, community
members and charities.
They include presents for all
ages, festive baking, and gift packs
for adults.
In accordance with pandemic
protocols, parents were invited to
visit Christchurch Community
House at appointed times and were
given 30 minutes each to select
gifts for their children.
Birthright Canterbury trust
manager Rhodora Sagles said the
community once again went above
and beyond to give to Birthright
families.
“It just shows the generosity from
the local community,” Sagles said.
“Everybody who donates, or
volunteers, just wants to see a child
happy and smiling on Christmas
Day.”
A recipient said Toy Day meant
so much to her family.
“There are kids in the world who
SANTA’S HELPERS: Martin Thompson leads the Santa
Claus Workshop Charitable Trust in making toys to donate
to children. Above, Andrew Grant (left), Alistair McDonald
and Neil Pugh are already making toys for next Christmas
at the workshop at Shirley Intermediate School.
Keeping the tradition of wooden toys alive
• By Fiona Ellis
CHRISTMAS IS fast
approaching, but the elves in
Santa’s Workshop are reluctant
to down tools for the holidays.
Co-ordinator Martin
Thompson leads volunteers,
handcrafting wooden toys for
donation to children who might
not otherwise receive a gift from
Santa, from the technology block
at Shirley Intermediate school.
With around 1000 toys now
awaiting the big day, Santa Claus
Workshop Charitable Trust is
taking a break until the school
opens again on January 31.
However, Thompson plans to
keep working at home.
“I’ve probably got 10 boxes of
toys to be painted. I’m doing it
over the holidays and some of
the other guys will be doing the
same,” the 70 year-old said.
In addition to several off-site
workers, the group has a core
of 10 regulars who attend the
workshop twice a week, mostly
retirees.
“All these guys are keen to
come back, they would come all
over the holidays if we let them.”
The toys will be distributed to
families by organisations such as
the Mayor’s Welfare Fund and
children’s charity Pillars.
From trains to tractors and
from penguins to gorillas, a wide
range of toys are crafted using
top-quality pine.
Plastics and metals were
avoided, and dowelling rods
were used to turn wheels. The
quality evoked toys from his own
childhood, Thompson said.
Even if left outside, the toys
would still last 10 years.
A builder by trade, Thompson
said his involvement in Santa’s
workshop felt like coming full
circle.
“I love playing with wood,
but it didn’t end up that way – I
ended up playing with concrete.
Now I’m back to playing with
wood.”
Thompson is taking over the
reins from Malcolm Westgarth,
“a good man” who passed away
last month after 18 years with
Santa’s workshop.
Thompson has been a part of
the workshop for eight years.
“I got involved because my
wife decided that I needed
something to do in early parts of
retirement.
“I came along here with a
Thermos flask one day and they
just got me painting.”
Creating toys from scratch
could be a complicated process,
as it took weeks to craft small details
and perfect the paintwork.
This was especially so in the case
of the toys that moved, such as a
rolling gorilla.
“There’s lots of moving parts.
We’ve got a leg, we’ve got a
shoulder, we’ve got three wheels,”
Thompson said.
Woodwork came as second
nature to him, but painting the
toys was more difficult, requiring
time and precision.
“There’s a lot of satisfaction when you see a toy finished
. . . it’s worth it.” – Martin Thompson
The Covid-19 pandemic also
posed a difficulty to the volunteers.
“When I came here in 2014, I
think we were making close to
1400 [toys], but of course with
Covid-19 we were shut for five
weeks this year. Last year was
similar, we were cut down a lot.”
Lockdown happened so
quickly they were unable to take
unfinished toys with them to
continue working from home.
The toys the group were currently
crafting were all for next
Christmas.
Toys for this Christmas were
collected from the workshop in
November by Lions Club members,
who then co-ordinated the
donations.
This meant the volunteers did
not often see the responses of the
children, but they had received
heartwarming feedback in the
past, Thompson said.
He had been told of a boy who
was overwhelmed to learn he
could keep his toy and said he
had never been given a present
before.
Another time, he gave a toy
truck to a family with a boy
and a girl. The girl sent him a
thank-you letter containing three
M&Ms.
“I’d given it to her little
brother, but she said ‘thank you
very much for the toy, I will get
the most use out of it’.”
All toys were popular, but the
volunteers tweaked their range
each year. The intricate toy sewing
machines would not be made
next year.
However, Thompson had a
new design for “gorgeous” stacking
tower blocks, and toy boats
were also being made.
New volunteers were welcome
and no background in woodwork
was necessary, although
those involved tended to be good
with their hands.
Santa’s other volunteers
included Alistair McDonald, a
former woodwork teacher who
joined six months ago because
he enjoyed the sense of purpose,
and Sandy Foster, who had
GENEROSITY: Ian
Morris with ranger
Nigel Morritt and
other council
rangers gifting
him his e-bike.
(Right) – Ian at
work in Victoria
Park, he has
been a volunteer
ranger for over
20 years.
NEWSLINE
‘Absolute legend’ receives e-bike for volunteer work
IAN MORRIS has been looking
after Victoria Park’s visitor
centre gardens for more than 20
years as a volunteer ranger.
Three days a week Ian slogs up
Dyers Pass Rd on his push bike
to tend to the gardens and his efforts
have been recognised by his
fellow park rangers.
They surprised Ian with a new
electric bike to help him with his
ride to the park, describing him
as an “absolute legend.”
Delighted by the generosity
of the gift, Ian named the bike
Black Beauty before taking it for
a quick spin.
“I can get rid of all my old
bikes now,’’ he said.
Ranger Nigel Morritt, who
works closely with Ian, told
him the bike was a small thank
you for all his years of hard
work.
“You’re a very important part
of our little family up here,” he
said.
“You are an absolute legend.
We just want to say thanks because
you have done an awful lot
of work for us and you are a very
special person.’’
City council parks programmes
and partnerships
manager Kate Russell said Ian
has special intellectual needs but
he has never let that slow him
down and he’s an inspiration
to the park rangers and other
volunteers.
“Like all of us, Ian isn’t getting
any younger and it has been
getting harder for him to make
the ride up to Victoria Park,”
she said. “He loves the routine
of coming to the park and it’s
really good for his well-being, so
we decided it was time Ian went
electric.”
Russell said with an e-bike,
Ian can remain part of the
team at Victoria Park and
stay connected to the cycling
community on the Port Hills.
Ian will still be able to ride up
Dyers Pass Rd, but it will be
gentler on his body.
“The bike is Ian’s gateway to
the world so having an e-bike
will also make his day-to-day
life easier and help him stay
connected with his family,” said
Russell.
Russell said the park rangers
set up a Givealittle page to
raise money for the e-bike and
persuaded Ecoquip NZ Ltd to
donate an accessory package to
go with it.
A significant number of the
donations received through the
Givealittle page came from the
mountain biking community
who shared the campaign link
on their social media networks.
“The atmosphere was very
Helping each
other through
COVID-19
With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau
will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or
someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate.
Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to
isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house
tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate.
Make a plan
If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will
get home or self isolate where you are.
While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and
necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church
or any community or private events or gatherings. No one
outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home.
Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have
a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.
Who can help out
Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with
a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could
need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help
with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people,
conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your
whānau and community can help each other when needed.
Support while isolating
It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.
You’ll have a support person who will contact you often
to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported
– even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also
get a telephone number for 24-hour health support.
If you need more help or support to manage at home,
you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.
What you’ll need
To help you get through, you will need to have food,
medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed
checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare
Check what support is available for self-isolating at home
and find more preparation tips at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare

RAY WHITE PAPANUI NEWS
Have you dropped in a gift yet?
Ray White Papanui is extremely proud to partner with
the Christchurch Kidney Society for our Little Ray of
Giving campaign this Christmas.
The Christchurch Kidney Society (CKS) was formed in
1973, initially as the New Zealand Kidney, Dialysis and
Transplant Society. Their aim is to provide support for
Christchurch patients and families of patients who are
either approaching or have already reached end-stage
renal failure.
This year the Christchurch Kidney Society would
greatly appreciate your donation of:
• Gifts for teenagers
• Gifts for adults
