Mystery book
giveaway to
encourage
new
readers
• By Fiona Ellis
YOU CAN’T judge a book
by its cover, especially if that
cover is wrapped in brown
paper.
Sneha Pardeshi, 23, aims
to extend the lifespan of old
books by finding new readers
intrigued by the mystery of
what lies behind their plain
packaging.
She began book giveaway
initiative The Mysterious
Novel with co-founders Manish
Dogra and Hinal Gala in
March.
Pardeshi and Dogra both
live in Riccarton.
A self-described book-lover,
Pardeshi volunteers at St Vincent
de Paul’s second-hand
shop in Hornby.
“I saw that we used to have
so many books but we didn’t
have space for storage,” Pardeshi
said.
They would sometimes have
to turn down people who
wanted to donate books.
The idea of using mystery
to encourage reading was inspired
by friends in India who
ran a ‘blind book date’ group.
The Mysterious Novel
sourced old books from
second-hand shops, online
sales and giveaways, and their
own bookshelves.
Love of carting rolls on
MALCOLM Johnson is keeping
the wheels turning on a hobby
that has interested him since
childhood.
The Kevin Hickman Retirement
Village resident supplies
charities with handmade racing
carts for kids.
He has already built 17 of
them in the past five years, the
more recent models made in the
garage of his retirement village
townhouse.
In Taranaki, where Johnson
grew up, he remembers every
kid had access to a cart.
Races were a regular feature
in a youngster’s summer, and
also a hobby encouraged by
the scouting movement, which
both he and wife Margaret were
involved in.
“All country kids had carts,
even though they were depleted
looking structures,” Johnson
said.
“We couldn’t get wheels
. . . we used to pinch the
wheels off lawnmowers and
later put them back on.”
Now his search for
modern-day equivalent
parts usually takes place in
secondhand goods stores,
such as the EcoShop on
Blenheim Rd.
He buys pushchairs and
toddler’s buggies, so he can
utilise the wheels and frames
with other components to
make a quality cart.
Charities that have benefited
from his work include the Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre
and the Women’s Refuge, as
well as children’s fund-raising
efforts.
To help pay for the ongoing
projects, Johnson relies on supporters,
such as fellow members
of the Pegasus Daylight Lodge,
which he belongs to.
The completed carts, painted
by a friend, Jimmy Roscoe, are
brightly coloured and solid.
However, given the enthusiastic
play of
HANDMADE: Malcolm
Johnson is keeping the
wheels turning on a hobby
that has interested him
since childhood.
youngsters, sometimes repairs
are necessary.
Johnson is enthused about life
and helping others, and one of
his retirement projects has been
to assist those less fortunate.
Overall, he feels sorry that
society is divided into haves
and have-nots.
“I’ve always wanted
fairness for all
people, coupled
with absolute
enthusiasm for
anything
I’ve believed
FATE OF WAR MEMORIAL
LIBRARY TO BE DECIDED
THe city council is likely to
make a decision on the future
of the Upper Riccarton War
Memorial Library in February,
head of facilities, property and
planning Bruce Rendall says.
The council may revoke the
reserve status of the site and
return it to the crown, although
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board has objected
to this. Demolition of the library
buildings is likely to be in the
first half of 2022, Rendall said.
PLAYGROUND
SUBMISSIONS
Sixty-six submissions have been
made by those keen to have
their say on the future of four
playgrounds in Halswell. Public
feedback closed on Monday
for opinions on Westbrooke
Park, Shamrock Reserve, Wales
Reserve and Ridder Reserve. A
city council plan will go to the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board for approval
next May.
TREE FELLED
A 21m tree in Burnside’s
Crosdale Pl has been axed
following a push to remove it by
residents. The eucalyptus tree,
which dropped branches on the
sidewalk and posed a risk to
pedestrians, was removed by the
city council on Tuesday.
We were so impressed with Cameron and his team, we knew we were in
great hands with their professionalism and amazing organisational skills.
Everything ran so smoothly and efficiently. Cameron certainly knows what
was happening with the market at the time we had our house listed and
this was a huge part of us selling our home with him and our successful sale.
A huge thank you to Cameron and his amazing team Sam and Lisa, I would
certainly recommend them to everyone thinking of selling their home.
Growing number of issues
reported going unresolved
Council approves
stormwater plans
5
MORE THAN 30 per cent of the
issues the public reached out to
the city council about have not
been resolved, a report shows.
This number has risen, according
to a monthly ticket report for
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board.
In the most recent breakdown
from October 20 to November 19,
2684 tickets – or jobs for the city
council to attend to – were reported
by those who lived in the
community board area. Of these,
1860 were completed, leaving 824
unresolved.
In the ticket report from September
20 to October 19, 2270
tickets were completed but 761
were left unresolved, a total of
25.11 per cent.
In the most recent report, tickets
fell in a range of categories,
including wheelie bins, transport,
three waters council assets and
property information.
Bins continue to be a big issue
for the area.
Uncollected bins were the top
reason for a resident to contact
the city council, with 266 tickets,
and damaged bins came second
with 239 tickets.
In the report from a month
earlier, damaged bins came out
on top with 240 tickets, while
missed bin collections placed
second with 189 tickets.
BINS: Uncollected and damaged bins continue to be a big
issue for the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton area.
However, in the most recent
report the third most common
issue was road litter, with 186
tickets, an issue which placed
fifth a month earlier with 133
tickets.
A total 1689 tickets remain
open for the area, with the
average unresolved ticket open
for 85 days, the latest report
shows.
Fifty per cent of open tickets
are less than 17 days old, but 25
per cent are more than 94
days old.
Number of tickets (issues)
reported in the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
area between October 20 and
November 19:
1. Bin not collected: 266
2. Damaged bin: 239
3. Litter (road): 184
4. Residential LIM: 178
5. Leak (water supply): 171
6. Residential water connection:
136
7. Residential property files: 89
8. Graffiti: 88
9. Missing bin: 85
10. Road asset (footpath, road,
furniture, etc): 71.
The city council has approved
the Halswell River and Heathcote
River stormwater management
plans.
These are the first of seven plans
being prepared between 2020 and
2023 for the district’s stormwater
catchments as the council plans
to improve the way it manages the
city’s stormwater.
Public consultation on the
two plans ran from July 5 until
August 30.
A combined 32 submissions
were received – 15 from
individuals and 17 from
organisations, including the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board.
Head of three waters and waste
Helen Beaumont said the final
plans will play an important
role in improving the city’s
stormwater discharges and
waterways over time.
“Stormwater affects everybody
because it’s literally any water that
falls onto roads, paths and other
hard surfaces,” Beaumont said.
“The water picks up pollution
from these surfaces and then
flows via drains and channels into
local waterways, which affects the
water quality and health of local
streams and rivers.”
“That’s why it’s important
our stormwater network is
continually maintained and
improved over time – to make the
city a safer and healthier place to
live.”
The stormwater management
plans set out the ways in which
the city council will meet the
requirements of its 25-year
comprehensive stormwater
network discharge consent, which
was granted by Environment
Canterbury in 2019.
They were developed in
consultation with parties
specified in the conditions of
the consent: Te Ngai Tūahuriri
Rūnanga, local community
boards, Christchurch-West
Melton and Selwyn-Waihora zone
committees, the department of
conservation, the Canterbury
regional council regional
engineer, and Halswell River
rating district representatives.
In approving the final plans,
the city council also requested
advice on further work to
address surface water quality
improvement for consideration
during its annual and long-term
planning processes.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel will
also write to the minister for the
environment Hon David Parker
about reducing surface water
contaminants from building
materials and vehicles.
Year 8 Camp @ Glentui!
Read on to find out what the year 8’s got up to at Glentui camp!
Day 1
We arrived at camp about mid morning and a group of us got ourselves ready for the
Mount Richardson walk. WOW. What a walk. It was a steep, unforgiving incline for pretty
much the whole way up but the kids, teachers and parent helpers did SO well! This took us
through until dinner time where we had a much needed feed! The plan was to play a game
outside at night but it began to rain so we bunkered down and played games inside and
got an ‘early night’ ready for the big day of activities on our second day.
Highlights (or struggles) of Day 1:
Charlie - I enjoyed the challenge of the walk up. Even though it was hard it was still fun.
It was worth making it to the top.
Holly B - I really enjoyed going up Mt Richardson. It was really difficult but I made it back
down!
Eden - Mt Richardson was my favourite activity because it was hard but it was pretty
and challenging but worth the challenge. I felt like I really accomplished it when I
got to the top.
Zubia - Although the walk was really hard I still enjoyed it because the view at the top
was amazing!
Day 2
With lots of students up at 6:30 and out of their bunk rooms into the games room they
began the day with lots of energy! We had a rotation of 5 different activities. They were:
Archery, Bubble Soccer, Team Building, Rogaine and Abseiling. We had 2 rotations before
lunch and 3 after lunch! Then some much needed dinner and an awesome camp fire with
toasted marshmallows! After the sun went down we played spotlight - which is definitely a
highlight of mine! Thanks to Miss P for coming out for a visit!
Highlights from the activities:
Luke M - Bubble soccer was my favourite activity on camp because we got to roll down the
hills while inside the bubbles.
Winston - I enjoyed the instructors that taught us abseiling and the parent helper that was
at the bottom cheering us on!
Steven - Archery tag was my favourite as it was my first time doing it. It was fun to hang
out with my friends.
Arsh - I loved archery tag because it was active and we ran around shooting...
We could work as a team in this one game and got to show our archery skills.
Day 3
Well, well, well! No sound of children even at 7am! Must have been a tiring day! Luckily
Mr Brown had Cotton Eye Joe all lined up ready
to play over the loud speakers to wake up those
sleepy heads. We split the group into two and one
did Bivvy Building first while the other did a river
walk right up to the waterfall. This was great fun
seeing where the flood carved out more of the river
bank and what was left of the waterfall compared
to when we were jumping off it with the year 7’s
at the beginning of the year. The students made
some awesome and.... questionable bivvys that
were good to take a picture in but might not have
survived the hypothetical situation we gave them!
None the less they all tried really hard! The sun was
trying to shine and by the afternoon the students
were outdoors again with a whole bunch playing
volleyball for about 4 hours straight! Many chilled
in the games room or their bunkrooms and rested
from the busy few days! Another riveting and tricky
game of spotlight was played under the cover of a
full moon as well!
Day 4 - Hometime!
Thanks to our amazing parent help for doing a large amount of cleaning up on the
morning of our last day! How interesting it is watching students trying to find lost socks,
rogue clothes and struggling to fit everything they packed before they left back into the
same bag... The weather was so beautiful we had another hit with the volleyball for a few
hours, played some more games and lay in the sun listening to some music before we
had a filled roll for lunch and packed up the bus!
THANK YOU
A massive thank you to the
parent help for everything you
did to support the teachers
and students on camp. We
appreciated the hard work
you put in and the laughs and
memories we have made with
you. Thank you to Mr Brown
for planning an awesome
camp! I think everyone can say
they had such a fun time and
enjoyed your wake ups and
scary stories!
Our new logo as voted in by our school community
The logo is in shape of the hull of the waka to represent the journey of a
waka to its future. The designs on the waka represent perseverance and
resilience when approaching waves which can be seen as challenges
to overcome. The outer koru represent whānau as well as the kura that
have supported the students. The figure at the top centre symbolises the
student and the goal to achieve the pae tawhiti known as the ultimate
goal in the distant horizon. Overall the shape was created to create the
shape of an acorn.
Swimming @ Te Hapua with Year 7/8!
Kōmingo
The year 7/8 hub has been walking to Te Hapua to have
swimming lessons led by some fabulous instructors.
While the rest of the school has lessons in the school pool
the year 7/8 hub is lucky enough to go to Te Hapua to
have our lessons.
We have enjoyed a quick walk down and despite the
dreary weather, the students participation is great and
they got in the (warmish) pool!
They have been tested and grouped into skill level and
from there, learn skills for water safety. It is important
students are involved in this as NZ is surrounded by water
and every parent can breath a little easier knowing their
child has the skills to survive should they find themselves
in a tricky situation in the water.
Wednesday is “Pyjama Day” where students practice
water safety while wearing clothes. This is helpful should
they find themselves in the water with their clothes on.
Have a look at what
our students have to
say about integrated
learning this term.
During term 4, our integrated
learning focus is the ‘world’.
Students have been researching
about a selected country from
each continent of the world. They were to research about a variety of countries, cultural clothing, dances,
tradition, myths/legend, flora, and fauna. During this research, students have been developing their skills in
‘wearable arts’. They have been given a brief and a limited time to create a piece. Moving forwards, students
will be combining their knowledge of a selected country to create a wearable arts piece, this will include a
dance or movement to represent their chosen country.
Reading: Students have been working extremely hard in reading, working on their individual goals. They
have enjoyed seeing their teacher for their reading session and then taking responsibility for completing their
follow-ups independently.
Writing: The first few weeks back at school students have been diving straight into recount writing. We
have been impressed to see what students are able to remember, plan for and write about.
Maths: In Maths we have been continuing with number knowledge including addition, subtraction, skip
counting, word problems, and so on. Aswell we as this we have been learning about time. Students have
shown a lot of interest in this as they can apply their new knowledge throughout the day.
Art: In teams we have been completing a range of Art
including drawing, colouring, cutting, gluing, painting and
folding. This has not only been super fun and shown some
amazing results but students have also worked on some
skills such as folding and cutting that have proven to be on
the tricky side.
Physical Education: With the sun being present, more
often classes have been getting outside playing games and
doing fitness. We are very excited to start swimming next
week! Don’t forget to pack your togs on your set day.
Huatau Athletics 2021
This term Huatau’s Physical Education programme
has focused on athletics and swimming. At the
beginning of the term the students focused on
learning and developing the skills of shot put,
discus, long jump and high jump. We then ran
our field events competition over two afternoons,
where the students all participated in discus,
shot put, high jump and long jump. This week
we concluded our 2021 athletics with our track
events, the sprints. The students have enjoyed
the opportunity to learn and explore the different
athletic skills and look forward to developing these
even further next year.

‘Absolute legend’ receives
e-bike for volunteer work
IAN MORRIS has been looking
after Victoria Park’s visitor
centre gardens for more than 20
years as a volunteer ranger.
Three days a week Ian slogs up
Dyers Pass Rd on his push bike
to tend to the gardens and his
efforts have been recognised by
his fellow park rangers.
They surprised Ian with a new
electric bike to help him with his
ride to the park, describing him
as an “absolute legend.”
Delighted by the generosity
of the gift, Ian named the bike
Black Beauty before taking it for
a quick spin.
“I can get rid of all my old
bikes now,’’ he said.
Ranger Nigel Morritt, who
works closely with Ian, told
him the bike was a small thank
you for all his years of hard
work.
“You’re a very important part
of our little family up here,” he
said.
“You are an absolute legend.
We just want to say thanks because
you have done an awful lot
of work for us and you are a very
special person.’’
City council parks programmes
and partnerships
manager Kate Russell said Ian
has special intellectual needs but
he has never let that slow him
down and he’s an inspiration
to the park rangers and other
GENEROSITY: Ian Morris with ranger Nigel Morritt and
other council rangers gifting him his e-bike.
volunteers.
“Like all of us, Ian isn’t getting
any younger and it has been
getting harder for him to make
the ride up to Victoria Park,”
she said. “He loves the routine
of coming to the park and it’s
really good for his well-being, so
we decided it was time Ian went
electric.”
Russell said with an e-bike,
Ian can remain part of the
team at Victoria Park and
stay connected to the cycling
community on the Port Hills.
Ian will still be able to ride up
Dyers Pass Rd, but it will be
gentler on his body.
Russell said the park rangers
set up a Givealittle page to
raise money for the e-bike and
persuaded Ecoquip NZ Ltd to
donate an accessory package to
go with it.
Bid to get people
reading NZ authors
• From page 1
“We wrap the books up, we
write three clues about it on the
front. You just know those clues
but you can’t see anything else,
not even the author’s name.”
Sometimes they had books
by famous authors such as Dan
Brown or Khaled Hosseini, but
they focused more on lesserknown
authors.
A lot of New Zealand authors
were not getting the love they
deserved, she said.
The group had held public
giveaways at three locations this
year: St Vincent de Paul’s Hornby,
Lincoln University and New
Brighton’s Karma Free Cafe.
A total of around 70 books
found new owners, with the initiative
proving especially popular
in Lincoln, where more than 30
books were all given away within
one and a half hours.
Although Hinal Gala has
moved to Auckland, the others
plan to hold more giveaways in
the New Year.
The Mysterious Novel also operates
online. People could request a
book through their Facebook page
and arrange to collect it, Gala
said.
Books were not priced, but
people could give donations. They
had received amounts ranging
from 50 cents to $20.
“If you want to take a book for
CO-FOUNDER: The
Mysterious Novel cofounder
Hinal Gala
who recently moved to
Auckland.
free, that’s fine as well.”
She hoped the initiative was
encouraging people to shun technology
for a book.
“A lot of people from my
generation do not prefer reading
at all, they prefer Netflix . . . and
even if they prefer books, it’s on
their kindles.”
Reading helped people to
become more imaginative and
creative, she said.
“We think of it as an initiative
to help people and the community.”
Delivering more than
just houses this Christmas
Grant Laing (Laings), Myles Laing (Laings), Gill Waugh (Salvation Army) and Jenny Henricksen (Laings)
Laing Properties is a 3rd generation owned family business that
has been delivering building relocation and construction services
throughout Canterbury and the South Island for over 30 years.
Good old fashioned family values and a sense of
community spirit are at the heart of everything they do.
“For the last two years we have seen the impact of
the Covid-19 pandemic on families and the community
and especially at Christmas” says Myles Laing, Managing
Director. “We wanted to do something meaningful and what
better way than to bring some joy to children this Christmas”
Laing Properties reached out to the local Hornby Salvation
Army branch to understand the needs in the community.
The Salvation Army Community Ministries staff and
volunteers at the Hornby centre, work tirelessly to assist
throughout the year by providing a number of services.
Financial Mentoring, Positive Lifestyle Programme, Social
Events for the whole family, Community Cuppa each week with
free bread available, Advocacy, Support and Welfare Needs,
Life related Bible Study each week and Sunday gatherings for
the whole family.
During the month of December, they receive hundreds of
requests from families hoping for some help with Christmas
presents for their children. In 2020 they helped between
50-60 families provide gifts for their children and to enjoy a
Christmas dinner.
Major Gill Waugh, Director & Pastor at Hornby Community
Ministries says “The outcomes of two years of Covid-19 and
its ripple effect means we are seeing a steadily increasing
demand for the services of The Salvation Army, as are many
other organisations and agencies. The outcomes being seen
are not only financial, with loss of jobs and decrease in hours
of work, but also issues with housing and the impacts on
physical and mental wellbeing. This amazing and generous
gift from Laings will be such a boost to many families in our
community and will help create positive memories and a fun
day for children and families with gifts and food”
Laing Properties is absolutely overjoyed, in conjunction with
their staff, friends and family and valued subcontractors to be
able to provide a substantial toy and gift voucher donation to
The Salvation Army this Christmas.
And it’s not too late for you to be a part. The Salvation
Army will be accepting toy donations right up until Friday 17th
December. You can drop off your unwrapped toys to Hornby
Community Ministries, 23 Manurere Street, HeiHei.
“Laing Properties want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas
and Happy Holiday Season. We look forward to 2022 and helping
to establish the new Hornby Community Menzshed”.
No rest for Santa’s helpers
• By Fiona Ellis
CHRISTMAS is fast
approaching, but the elves in
Santa’s Workshop are reluctant
to down tools for the holidays.
Martin Thompson leads
volunteers handcrafting wooden
toys for donation to children
who might not otherwise
receive a gift from Santa from
the technology block at Shirley
Intermediate school.
With around 1000 toys now
awaiting the big day, Santa Claus
Workshop Charitable Trust is
officially taking a break until the
school opens again on January
31.
However, Thompson planned
to keep working at home.
“I’ve probably got 10 boxes of
toys to be painted. I’m doing it
over the holidays, and some of
the other guys will be doing the
same,” the 70 year-old said.
In addition to several off-site
workers, the group has a core
of 10 regulars who attend the
workshop twice a week, mostly
retirees.
“All these guys are keen to
come back, they would come all
over the holidays if we let them.”
The toys will be distributed to
families by organisations such as
the Mayor’s Welfare Fund and
children’s charity Pillars.
From trains to tractors and
from penguins to gorillas, a wide
range of toys are crafted using
top quality pine, he said.
Plastics and metals were avoided,
and dowelling rods were
used to turn wheels. The quality
evoked toys from Thompson’s
own childhood.
Even if left outside, the toys
would still last 10 years.
A builder by trade, Thompson
said his involvement in Santa’s
Workshop felt like coming full
circle.
“I love playing with wood,
but it didn’t end up that way – I
ended up playing with concrete.
SATISFYING: Martin Thompson
leads the Santa Claus
Workshop Charitable Trust at
Shirley Intermediate School.
It makes toys to donate to
children.
PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
Now I’m back to playing with
wood.”
Thompson is taking over the
reins from Malcolm Westgarth,
“a good man” who passed away
last month after 18 years with
Santa’s Workshop.
Thompson has been involved
in Santa’s Workshop for eight
years.
“I got involved because my
wife decided that I needed
something to do in early parts of
retirement.
“I came along here with a
Thermos flask one day and they
just got me painting.”
Creating toys from scratch
could be a complicated process,
as it took weeks to craft small details
and perfect the paintwork.
This was especially so in the
case of the toys that moved, such
as a rolling gorilla.
“There’s lots of moving parts.
We’ve got a leg, we’ve got a
shoulder, we’ve got three wheels.”
Woodwork came as second
nature to him, but painting the
toys was more difficult, requiring
time and precision.
The Covid-19 pandemic also
posed a difficulty to the volunteers.
“When I came here in 2014, I
think we were making close to
1400 [toys], but of course with
Covid-19 we were shut for five
weeks this year. Last year was
similar, we were cut down a lot.”
Lockdown happened so
quickly they were unable to take
unfinished toys with them to
continue working from home.
The toys the group were
currently crafting were all for
next Christmas.
Heart-warming feedback from children
WORKSHOP: Movable wooden gorillas are assembled by Sandy Foster, who
has been involved in the Santa Claus Workshop Charitable Trust for the past
eight years.
ACTION: Andrew Grant saws a piece of
pine that will make a toy plough.
• From page 11
Toys for this Christmas were collected
from the workshop in November by
Lions Club members, who then coordinated
the donations.
This meant the volunteers did not
often see the responses of the children,
but they had received heart-warming
feedback in the past, Thompson said.
He had been told of a boy who was
overwhelmed to learn he could keep his
toy and said he had never been given a
present before.
Another time, he gave a toy truck to a
family with a boy and a girl.
The girl sent him a thank you letter
containing three M&Ms.
“I’d given it to her little brother, but
she said: ‘Thank you very much for the
toy, I will get the most use out of it’.”
All toys were popular, but the
volunteers tweaked their range each
year.
The intricate toy sewing machines
would not be made next year.
However, he had a new design for
SKILLS: Neil Pugh, 85, was awarded a QSM in 2020 for his work with
Lions recycling spectacles to the Pacific region. Today he is part of a
group of people who handmake wooden toys to donate at Christmas.
PHOTOS: JOHN COSGROVE
“gorgeous” stacking tower blocks, and
toy boats were also being made.
New volunteers were welcome and no
background in woodwork was necessary,
although those involved tended to
be good with their hands.
Santa’s other volunteers ranged from
Alistair McDonald, a former woodwork
teacher who joined six months ago because
he enjoyed the sense of purpose,
to Sandy Foster, who had worked in
farming and in the army but always
enjoyed DIY.
“There’s a lot of satisfaction when
you see a toy finished . . . it’s worth it,”
Thompson said.

Helping each
other through
COVID-19
With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau
will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or
someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate.
Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to
isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house
tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate.
Make a plan
If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will
get home or self isolate where you are.
While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and
necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church
or any community or private events or gatherings. No one
outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home.
Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have
a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.
Who can help out
Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with
a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could
need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help
with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people,
conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your
whānau and community can help each other when needed.
Support while isolating
It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.
You’ll have a support person who will contact you often
to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported
– even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also
get a telephone number for 24-hour health support.
If you need more help or support to manage at home,
you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.
What you’ll need
To help you get through, you will need to have food,
medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed
checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare
Check what support is available for self-isolating at home
and find more preparation tips at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare

Hearing Care How It Should Be
When it comes to caring for your senses, you want to know you are
in good hands. So, when you, or your loved ones start to have
problems with your ears or your hearing, there is a team of
passionate professionals who will give you the very best service.
Hear Again have been delighting the Hornby community from their
bright, purpose made clinic at the Hub, for the past 4 years.
Offering everything from Ear Wax removal by gentle microsuction,
through to the fitting of the most advanced hearing aids offered by
the world’s leading manufacturers, the team are happy to help.
Neil Hardisty, NZAS
Audiometrist, has been
expertly overcoming hearing
difficulties for residents of
Christchurch since 2009.
Neil is frequently praised for
his limitless patience,
wonderful caring nature and
ability to solve all manner of
hearing and hearing aid
problems. Neil is never
satisfied until you are.
In New Zealand, one in six people have some degree of hearing
difficulty. Over the age of 60, more than half the population are
living with a significant hearing reduction. This invisible condition
can be incredibly frustrating, as conversation on a one to one basis
can be ok, but social situations become very uncomfortable indeed.
Background noise can make conversation almost impossible to
follow causing some sufferers to remove themselves from the
conversation, or even avoid going to the social function completely.
Other early signs of hearing difficulty are a creeping up of the
volume control on the TV, frequently asking family and friends to
repeat themselves, or accusing people of mumbling when they
speak. With hearing loss recently being linked to the early onset of
Dementia in studies throughout the world, these early signs are not
to be ignored. Early detection of this is paramount.
Hear Again are the highest rated hearing clinic in Christchurch,
offering FREE no obligation 30 minute initial hearing assessments.
If you, or any of your loved ones have noticed any difficulties with
your hearing, this can be quickly and professionally checked for you
at The Hub, 418 Main South Road, Hornby. If you already have
hearing aids from any manufacturer, they will give them a FREE
clean and check to ensure they are in tip top condition for you.
Shop 125, The Hub, Hornby www.hearagain.co.nz 03 9741658
Are your ears feeling blocked?
Ear wax and other blockages can be safely and easily
removed using the very latest microsuction techniques.
Ear wax production varies hugely from person to person,
some ears keep themselves very clean, but others are
like little wax production factories!
For only $50 you can get quick, instant relief and
get back to enjoying the sounds of life again!
Come visit the highest rated hearing clinic in Christchurch
Check out all of our 5 Star Google reviews. Here is a small selection:
Wow, need help quickly, and Hear Again provided quick service. The team were very friendly and Neil
was very conscientious. Great job!
Happy to recommend. Friendly, professional service from Neil and team. Will definitely be returning
for any future requirements.
I can HEAR AGAIN ! I popped in to see Neil and his team on the way to the pharmacy to get an ear
cleaning product as it sounded like I was underwater. The Hear Again team saw me on the spot as
they had a free appointment. Ears 100% clear. Many many thanks Neil, will see (and hear) you again

Merry Christmas
Dear Wigram Resident,
We are nearly there! For many, 2021 has been a challenging year. Thank you to
everyone for continuing to care for each other and our communities. None of
us can do this alone. I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand, so many of our
businesses, community groups and people pulling out all the stops to make sure
we all had opportunities to be vaccinated. Thank you to everyone who has been
on the front-line of these efforts to get people protected.
Here’s looking forward to a great 2022. See you there. Xx
