Pressure goes on to
change flyover site
CONTROVERSY: The proposed flyover will connect residential Rolleston (left of State Highway 1) with the industrial
area, bridging across the highway from Rolleston Drive North to Jones Rd north of the Hoskyns Rd intersection.
MANY ROLLESTON residents
want the town’s proposed
flyover shifted to a different area
of the highway.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency design team members
are facing key challenges as they
consider community feedback on
their Rolleston flyover project.
It is proposed that the flyover
bridge across State Highway
1 would connect residential
Rolleston, from Rolleston Drive
North, with the industrial
hub, at Jones Rd north of the
Hoskyns Rd intersection.
However, newly collated
feedback shows many believe
the bridge needs to be relocated.
Suggested areas include some
distance down the highway,
at Rolleston Drive South or
Tennyson St, while another
suggestion is it be part of the
highway, rather than go across it.
Teenagers
charged
over car
ramming
• By Susan Sandys
TWO TEENAGERS are
appearing before the youth court
in relation to incidents of parked
cars being rammed in Lincoln
earlier this year.
Senior Sergeant Steph McDaniel
said a 14 and a 15-year-old, a male
and a female, were “still going
through the court system”.
Four youths, including the pair,
all from the Selwyn area, were
initially referred to Youth Aid.
There was a spate of car thefts in
the district involving more than
10 vehicles, some of which were
used to ram parked vehicles on the
roadside for fun. In August, police
reported speaking to a number of
youths who were assisting them
with their investigation.
The Selwyn Times understands
the teenagers were copycatting a
social media trend in other parts
of New Zealand, where groups of
youths target cars, steal them and
then brag about their exploits.
In May, Taranaki police said a
group of 30 teenagers had stolen
more than 100 Mazdas, apparently
inspired by the trend.
At the time, police were working
with Netsafe and the censor’s
office to take down the content
posted by teenagers, mostly to
Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.
THE LINCOLN Maternity
Hospital building could
continue meeting the health
Canterbury
Board executive
planning,
funding and
decision support,
Tracey
the board was
yet to make a decision on potential
disposal of the property.
Thirty submissions received
from the public consultation
process were considered at a
recent meeting of the board’s
quality, finance, audit and risk
committee.
“Management were asked to
review the previous modelling
and assumptions to ascertain
whether there are any future
health requirements that could
make use of the property in the
future,” Maisey said.
“Those investigations will be
presented to the board for consideration
at the next meeting
in February, where we expect a
decision on the property.”
Maisey would not elaborate
further on what potential future
health requirements were being
investigated, as the report would
not be presented to the full
board until its next meeting in
February.
In the case of a decision being
made to dispose of the property,
this would have to be done in
accordance with the statutory
disposal process, involving approval
of the Minister of Health.
rights of first refusal must be
could possibly be offered as part
of a public sale process.
As well as the 1926 maternity
building, the 5401 m sq
property contains the Lincoln
Community Garden and a 2011
dental building, which may be
relocated to another CDHB site.
Many Lincoln residents want
the Lincoln Community Garden
on site to be retained if the site is
repurposed or sold. The CDHB
allowed Lincoln Envirotown to
establish the community garden
at the site in 2008.
investigating if
there are other
health services
they could
offer from
the Lincoln
Maternity
Hospital site
once its services
are relocated.
Many also want to see the maternity
building retained, due to
its historic nature and sentimental
value to the community.
However, it is unknown now
many of the submitters are
seeking these outcomes, as the
summary of submissions could
not be made public until after
the February meeting.
The maternity and dental services
currently operating from
Lincoln will move to the health
board’s new Oromairaki maternity
facility being established at
Selwyn Health Hub, expected to
be in April.
ENJOY VILLAGE LIFE
Thirty million dollar care complex
for Rolleston
The Boulevard Lifestyle Village is excited about the new care
facility they plan to build mid next year.
Owner and village manager Karen Harris says it has taken quite
some time in the design stage, working closely with Ikon architects
to ensure facility meets all the needs of the community now and in
the future.
There will be 50 beds for hospital and rest home care plus a 10-bed
memory impaired unit along with two palliative care suites and
lounge. There will also be 20 care suites for hospital and rest home
level care and 10 fully serviced apartments.
The build will take anything from 18 months to two years and Karen
says it cannot come soon enough. Grant from GE Construction will
complete the build as he has done with all the villas.
“This is a big project but exciting to think we are finally getting
closer to commencement,” says Karen and adds, “along with the
build there will be a new 800m 2 lodge for the villa residents. “
This will provide enough capacity for the village villa residents on
completion and provide bar, restaurant and café facilities along with
a swim spa and gymnasium. There will be access to a hairdresser
and beautician as well.
The Boulevard Boutique Lifestyle Village
The Boulevard now has 34 villas complete with four
more in the building stages. The New Year will see the
commencement of another 10 villas, which are all under
contract, along with a further six as consents come
through.
The village will take possession of the adjoining five
acres of land at the end of January and plan to start
work on that property straight away.
”We had a big waiting list for two-bedroom double
garage villas and three-bedroom villas so will be building
26 villas on that land,” says Karen. “All villas in that
immediate build stage are under contract.”
‘Pipe dream’ of turning historic hall into
a museum gets a much-needed boost
• By Susan Sandys
HORORATA Historical Society
members are closer to making
their dream of relocating the
society’s museum into reality.
Currently, the museum is closed
as borer and dampness have
resulted in dangerous holes in its
tongue-and-groove flooring.
Chairman Robby Wilson said
he welcomed the $20,000 allocation
the district council had
decided on this month, which
would go towards a $50,000
feasibility study on the cost of
developing the 1896 Hororata
Hall to house the museum.
“It’s all a bit of a pipe dream in
a way – trying to do something
without any money, but if you
don’t try, you don’t know,”
Wilson said.
The society has community
support behind it. Go Hororata,
a collective of community groups
including the society, wrote a
letter to Mayor Sam Broughton
asking that the Hororata Hall
and its land be put back into
community ownership.
Go Hororata chairman Craig
Blackburn said in the letter
residents had made it clear
they wanted the building, once
flagged for demolition, retained
as part of the village’s cultural
heritage.
“Go Hororata will commit to
improving this facility and giving
it a new purpose,” Blackburn said.
The $20,000 allocation was
subsequently granted, from $1
million set aside for the Hororata
Community Centre project in
the Long Term Plan.
The society is applying for
grants from other organisations
in the hope of securing the
remaining $30,000.
Wilson said the Hororata Hall
would make an ideal museum
site, as it was in a busy part of the
village, on its main road.
“Every time you go through
Hororata, you go past the hall,”
Wilson said.
Made of weatherboards, the
hall has later additions which
could be removed to reveal the
original structure.
“The hall is in pretty good
shape, it just hasn’t been updated.
Everything is older, but
it’s very sound, even with the
earthquake the floors are all
good. The tongue-and-groove
ceiling is magnificent.”
The new site would allow the
HISTORIC: The Hororata Hall was built in 1896. Today it is
destined to house the village’s museum.
society to do justice to its displays
and stories, including those
featuring the area’s early high
profile residents such as former
New Zealand Premier John Hall
and 19th-century politician
Samuel Bealey.
Hororata was once a thriving
town serving three large farming
runs, with shops, pubs, joiners,
undertakers and builders.
Currently, the museum is
located on a paper road in a
relocated former racecourse
totalisator building, next to the
historic Cotons’ Cottage. The
museum generally opens each
summer season from September,
but could not this year due to the
floor damage.
At its meeting this month, the
district council agreed to discuss
with Go Hororata its suggestion
of placing the hall and its land
back into community ownership.
It will also discuss with the group
its hopes of funding and running
its own community centre, with
the council contributing to the
operation costs.
Go Hororata members were
disappointed with a scaled-down
$3 million community centre
proposal, which the district
council included in its Long
Term Plan earlier this year.
only minor injuries.
Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade members
cut out the driver, believed to be in his 20s.
The driver’s refrigerated milk delivery
vehicle had gone off the side of Springs
Rd while travelling towards Christchurch
about 5am on Thursday, into a low ditch
and a large hedge.
Deputy chief Roger McLenaghen said
it appeared the hedge had cushioned the
impact.
St John treated the driver at the scene for
a minor injury.
“It was still enough force to crush the
cab back onto him,” McLenaghen said.
The man’s right foot was trapped,
preventing him from getting out of the
vehicle on his own, and the steering wheel
was touching against his abdomen.
Firefighters spent about 15 minutes
cutting the hedge away so they could gain
access. They were then able to cut into the
A pillar of the cab, so they could pull the
front off, and remove part of the steering
wheel, enabling the man to climb out the
passenger door and be seen by waiting
paramedics.
“I think he was still a bit shocked, he
was quite happy to be out,” McLenaghen
said.
Second round of feedback
sought for flyover proposal
• From page 1
The roading authority last week released
the feedback in a community engagement
report, summarising responses from consultation
undertaken in July and August.
There were 875 online map comments, 28
feedback form submissions and 77 email/
letter submissions.
Concerns from residents highlighted the
key challenges the design team was now
working through, the report said.
These concerns included that State
Highway 1 should remain open at multiple
points at Rolleston and the connection to
Jones Rd should remain for southbound
traffic.
Jones Rd businesses have opposed the
current plan as it reduces accessibility
from the highway. West Rolleston Primary
School has opposed it, concerned about
increased traffic resulting from making
Dunns Crossing Rd a southern entrance
into the town. The district council has also
rung alarm bells, saying it gives rise to new
safety concerns, disadvantages businesses
and does not support growth and prosperity.
“Along with community feedback, we
are taking time to closely examine again
whether we have tested and exhausted all
PLAN: The flyover proposes
improvements to the Jones and
Hoskyns Rds intersection.
the options available to us. This is the value
community engagement brings to the
planning process and the project,” a Waka
Kotahi spokesperson said upon release of
the report.
The next step is offering the community
a second opportunity for feedback,
expected in the first half of 2022.
Waka Kotahi is delivering the project
as part of the New Zealand Upgrade
Programme, an $8.7 billion investment
Helping each
other through
COVID-19
With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau
will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or
someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate.
Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to
isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house
tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate.
Make a plan
If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will
get home or self isolate where you are.
While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and
necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church
or any community or private events or gatherings. No one
outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home.
Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have
a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.
Who can help out
Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with
a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could
need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help
with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people,
conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your
whānau and community can help each other when needed.
Support while isolating
It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.
You’ll have a support person who will contact you often
to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported
– even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also
get a telephone number for 24-hour health support.
If you need more help or support to manage at home,
you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.
What you’ll need
To help you get through, you will need to have food,
medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed
checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare
Check what support is available for self-isolating at home
Wednesday December 22 2021 Selwyn Times
Regarding the article in
the Selwyn Times (Dec 15)
on pokie machines.
The appropriate number
of pokie machines in
Selwyn district is zero.
Pokie machines are
a scourge on society,
particularly for those with
gambling addictions.
Research over the years
has clearly established that
most of the money poured
into pokie machines
comes from those who
can’t afford it, or from the
proceeds of crime.
I acknowledge that a
portion of the proceeds are
given out to sports clubs,
schools and community
projects but it’s not appropriate
for those groups to
receive funding from such
a dirty little secret.
There are more
appropriate methods of
fundraising that can be
used to provide funding
to worthy groups in the
community.
Our district council and
central government need
to step up to the plate and
rid society of these nasty
little machines. – Frank
Dowle, Weedons
Three Waters
It was good to see
pushback by way of
the open letter dated
November 26 from our
district council to Minister
Nanaia Mahuta on Three
Waters, the underlying
issue being one of trust in
that she had made the allin
decision last June while
telling district councils
that they still had choices
to be in or out. Hard to
believe the Government
Cabinet was not complicit
in this ruse.
It was pleasing also that
the district council wrote
direct to the minister rather
than through that now
powerless and conflicted
Local Government NZ
that purport to represent
councils.
I am not sure, however,
I agree with our council’s
claim that it goes to great
lengths to seek ratepayer
participation given latency
of flow of known information
and few if any direct
community discussions
where factual information
could be shared and
debated.
The letter does seem contradictory
in that on one
hand the district council is
saying that all is good with
water within Selwyn and
on the other suggesting yet
another organisation with
all attendant costs.
With local body elections
scheduled for 2022,
LETTERS 11
No place for pokie machines
POLICE ARE hoping a
suspect’s distinctive red
and white hooded jacket
helps identify them, after
about $100 was stolen from
Lincoln Chinese Takeaway
on Gerald St.
“Somebody may know
who that jacket belongs to,”
Constable Ian McKinney
said.
McKinney is appealing
to anyone who may have
information on the identity
of the suspect to get in
touch with police.
The suspect was captured
shortly before 4am on
December 9 on CCTV
at the store. The door
was jemmied open in the
burglary, where the money
was taken from the store’s
till.
We want to hear your views
on the issues affecting life
in the Selwyn district
ratepayers will have this
matter front of mind when
considering who is the best
fit to support ratepayers in
this seemingly cost-plus
environment. – Ian Lees,
Darfield
Freedom of
choice
I think that as a
government-controlled
identity, the district
council is weak.
Just as Jacinda has her
strings pulled, they do too.
There are far more
people than they realise,
who refuse to be jabbed,
because of hearsay.
They are just trying to
take our freedom of choice
away, but in the end it’s the
providers that lose. – Barry
Saunders, Lincoln
Reindeer tops best mailbox
• By Fiona Ellis
SANTA AND his reindeer are almost
postmen, and it is this feeling of
camaraderie that led the RD2 rural
delivery team to their choice for the area’s
best-decorated letterbox.
This year, the Christmas competition
was won by a glitzy Motukarara letterbox
dressed to look like a reindeer, with a pintsized
Santa perched on top.
RD2 Christchurch Rural Delivery
co-owner Sophie Styles said it was the
second year the competition was held, and
this year about 40 letterboxes had been
decorated.
“The letterboxes always put a smile on
SPARKLY: Even a bus
stop, on Duck Pond Rd at
Motukarara, was decorated
for the competition.
my face, every single day,” Styles said.
“Everyone made a lot more of an effort
this year, which is really cool to see.”
The letterboxes had drawn plenty of
comment, she said.
Styles and the five other RD2 team
members struggled to decide on a winner,
as there was strong competition.
“The reason we’ve gone for the winner
. . . is [the reindeer] represents what we do
– we deliver mail.”
Several mailboxes were set to receive a
special delivery – for the winner, a family
voucher for the He Puna Taimoana
Hot Pools in New Brighton, and for
the four runners-up, a big bag of
cookies each.
Bees essential to ecosystem
BEES PROVIDE an
extremely essential
ecosystem service to
humans, pollinating plants
that produce seeds and
fruit.
Honeybees are the
masters of pollination given
their impressive colony
size, ability to work on a
large diversity of flower
species and our ability to
transport their hives where
we want them.
Bumblebees were also
introduced to New Zealand
for red clover and their
large size allows them to
work in cooler and windier
conditions than smaller
bees.
There are 13 introduced
and 28 native bee species in
New Zealand.
A native species
photographed recently
on my raspberries was
identified as the Māori
masked bee, Hylaeus
relegatus.
This bee is almost
completely black apart
from yellow parts of its
face, with the male having
more yellow and the
female. Females are also
slightly larger, with an
average length of 7.8mm,
while males average
6.5mm.
The species is found
throughout New Zealand,
Chatham Islands and Three
Kings Islands.
Most collections of
this species have been in
December to February, but
they have been recorded
from October to April.
Host plants include flax,
cabbage trees, kanuka,
manuka, pohutukawa, rata,
Raoulia, Carmichaelia,
eight species of Hebe and
11 exotic species.
Nests have been recorded
in natural sites such as in
native plants, in holes made
by other insects and in
man-made holes.
Local bee expert Barry
Donovan suggests in his
Fauna of New Zealand
book (issue on bees) that
availability of suitable nest
holes may be a limiting
factor for this species.
Hylaeus relegatus have
been found nesting in 6mm
diameter holes drilled in
wood, so this may be a way
to encourage them into
your backyard.
Easy win for
Darfield
to retain
top position
SODDEN GROUNDS meant
only one match was possible in
Canterbury country’s premier
one-day competition before the
Christmas break, and Darfield took
full advantage of helpful conditions
to consolidate their lead.
Ohoka hosted Darfield at Mandeville,
a traditionally fast drying
ground, but the pitch was still
destined to assist the seam attack,
prompting the visitors to bowl first
after winning the toss on Saturday.
Teenage pace bowler Zac Foulkes
justified the decision immediately,
skittling the competition’s leading
run scorer, former New Zealand
under-19 representative Rhys Mariu
for a golden duck.
Foulkes, 19, dismissed four of
Ohoka’s top-five en route to superb
figures of 5/11 from seven overs.
Ohoka were routed for 47 in 21.3
overs, veteran Paul Miller (19 from
42 balls) provided the only resistance.
Darfield needed just seven overs
to reach 49/1, opener Foulkes
ensured the chase would be brief by
cracking 23 from 17 deliveries.
The competition resumes on
GOALKEEPERS are vocal by
nature and necessity, though
Pieter-Taco Bierema wasn’t
exactly talking up his MVP
award.
The Selwyn United shotstopper
was accorded most
valuable player status following
the Rolleston-based club’s
winless National League –
South Central Series –
campaign, at first glance a
curious call for a team that
conceded 15 goals.
Bierema was between the
sticks in each of United’s five
games and admitted he was
taken aback to be chosen.
“It was a surprise, you
wouldn’t have picked it.
Goalkeepers don’t often get
these awards, especially when
you’re the keeper that’s probably
conceded the most goals in the
competition,” he said.
Actually Wellington
Olympic’s Toby Hunt was
beaten 16 times, although he did
play one extra game, and it was
humbling as Miramar Rangers
blitzed the final 7-2.
of field – the family’s mixed
cropping farm near Ashburton
Goalkeeper surprised at
most valuable player award
MVP A KEEPER: Selwyn United goalkeeper Pieter-Taco
Bierema was surprised to be named named the most
valuable player in the National League – South Central
Series competition.
– was eager to palm off the
achievement to a hard-working
defensive unit in front of him.
“A lot of teams got frustrated,
thinking they should be doing
better against us than they
were,” he said.
“We didn’t have a lot of the
ball to play with, we defended a
lot. I suppose that’s recognition
for that.”
So might the team have
conceded, say, 30 without
him? “I don’t know,” Bierema
laughed.
The high point of Selwyn’s
first foray in a domestic league
competition was a 2-2 draw with
Rangers in their final game, a
result more precious than any
MVP gong for Bierema.
“That was huge for us not to
leave it with a big donut and
zero points, five losses from five
games,” he said.
Selwyn United’s resurgence
throughout 2021 was also a
greater cause for celebration
after the men’s first team diced
with demotion from Mainland
Football’s premiership last
season.
“Last year fighting
relegation, no one probably
expected us to be in the
Southern League, let alone the
South Central Series,” said
Bierema, who is yet to receive a
trophy or certificate from New
Zealand Football.
“Nothing’s turned up in the
mail yet. I’d have thought they
might send out a little trophy,
but I have no idea.”

Tennyson Street Rolleston Drive
intersection upgrade
Major upgrades to the Tennyson Street/Rolleston Drive intersection will begin in the new year to
install traffic signals at the intersection and other upgrades.
This work will require some temporary road closures and one-way lanes while the work is completed.
From Monday 10 January
· Rolleston Drive will be one-way westbound. The one-way restrictions will be in place until these
upgrades are completed, which is expected to be in late April, weather permitting.
· Tennyson Street will be closed either side of the intersection for five weeks. From mid-February –
weather permitting – this section will be open to a one-way system southbound (towards Lincoln).
From Sunday 16 January
· The intersection will be closed from 9pm–6am daily for about two weeks.
Signed detours will be in place and temporary safe access for pedestrians and cyclists will be
maintained throughout works. Temporary bus stops will be in place on Rolleston Drive and Lowes
Road for the affected bus stops for the 820, 85 and 5 bus routes.
Along with the new traffic signals the upgrade will include a new lane layout with right hand
turning traffic lanes and cycle lanes, linking to the pathways recently installed to the north on
Tennyson Street, along with signal crossings for bicycles and for pedestrians.
Rolleston Drive, west of Tennyson Street as far as the Rolleston Community Centre, will be
upgraded to improve access to the future Rolleston town centre.
Thank you for your patience while we carry out this work.
Battery recycling programme
launches in Selwyn
The Council and E-Cycle have partnered up to bring a battery
recycling programme to Selwyn.
It will be the first easily accessible battery recycling programme
across the district covering everything from laptop, smartphone and
tool batteries to batteries for common household devices.
The free recycling programme will divert batteries from landfill – with
batteries previously being either disposed of as rubbish in kerbside
bins, or taken to the Pines Resource Recovery Park for disposal as
hazardous waste.
New World supermarkets are supporting the initiative with drop off
points at New World Rolleston, and New World Lincoln, as well as
at the Darfield Library and Service Centre and the Pines Resource
Recovery Park. The Ministry for the Environment has assisted with
some of the initial set up and processing costs.
Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd says it is another
opportunity to make a difference with our waste and to improve
our environment.
“It’s great to have support from Kiwi companies and to make the
most of international technology to help our community recycle
these batteries and keep them out of landfill.
Thousands of tonnes of batteries are imported into Aotearoa New
Zealand every year.
As the demand for battery-powered devices increases, it is
increasingly important we maximise recycling and recovering these
resources by keeping them out of landfill.”
Improper battery disposal is also a fire risk in kerbside collection
trucks and at the recovery park, he says.
The batteries will be sent for recycling in Australia – where 70-90% of
each battery is recycled into new batteries or ingredients in roading
mixes and fertilisers. Nickel-cadmium and Lithium-ion batteries are
forwarded to a specialist recycling plant in South Korea.
The service accepts household quantities of the following
battery types:
· Lithium-ion (used in laptops, mobile phones, tools)
· Alkaline, drycell and zinc (used in flashlights, radios, remote
controls, smoke detectors)
· Button cell/coin (used in watches, hearing aids)
· Nickel-cadmium (used in portable electronics, tools, toys)
· Nickel-metal hydride (used in digital cameras, laptops,
mobile phones)
Opportunity for more young people to blaze a trail
A Council internship programme to help young people into work is already having an impact just weeks
after the first intake.
The first six interns for the Council’s Trailblazers internship have graduated with two interns already
getting into full-time employment thanks to the programme.
Trailblazers is a collaboration by the Council and Youth Pathways, with support from the Ministry of
Social Development (MSD) for people who are unemployed or working less than 30 hours a week.
It includes 25 hours of placement hours with the Council including working in libraries, the Selwyn
Sports Centre and events planning.
The programme also focuses on fitness and health, cultural wellbeing and exploration, and life skills
development. It includes presentations from a number of guest speakers in local business.
Two of the interns gained full-time employment following the six-week work readiness course
including placement, while others are actively seeking employment in Selwyn.
Council Community Services and Facilities Group Manager Denise Kidd says it was great to see the
success for the first intake and the Council is excited to see the continued impact of the programme
over the next year.
“We’ve tested and refined the programme over this intake and it’s been fantastic to see how the interns
enjoyed their time and how positive they were about the benefits. Local government is a great place to
work and it really does improve community life. Skills and experiences gained through these roles are
also hugely relevant to a wide range of other jobs in the community.”
Applications are now open for Intake 2 which starts on Monday 14 February 2022. Applications close on
Friday 31 December 2021. Information on the programme can be found at selwyn.govt.nz/trailblazers.
Applications can be sent to trailblazers@selwyn.govt.nz or dropped off at any of our service centres.
Businesses interested in knowing more about the graduate interns or who want to be involved in the
programme can email trailblazers@selwyn.govt.nz. MSD is also happy to talk with local businesses and
potential employers about subsidies and benefits that may be available.
I love serving as the Mayor of our incredible district, full of passionate, creative and flexible people and
families who look out for one another.
Although Covid has forced us to cancel or downscale many memory-making opportunities, I’m proud of
the individuals and businesses who continue to achieve great things in Waikirikiri Selwyn.
Next year will bring new challenges and opportunities so let’s be mindful of our own head-space and
how our thoughts and actions are building or hindering ourselves and those around us.
As we come to the start of a new year perhaps we need to stop something that wears us down and
start something that lifts our wellbeing. This year I stopped eating so much sugar and started eating
more fish, I am trying to stop measuring my worth by what others tell me and have started yoga, I have
stopped listening to the radio and started listening to more books.
I am feeling ready for Christmas and summer.
I’m looking forward to cricket, afternoons at
the river, an ice cream or two, food from the
BBQ and sitting in the shade on a hot day and
enjoying time with Liz and Elliott. This Christmas
I hope you can take time to focus on the things
you hold dear, coming together with family and
friends, traveling somewhere new or revisiting
your favourite spot and treating yourself.
Is it time to replace your business
vehicle or machinery? Do you need
freedom of choice to allow you to think
and plan longer-term in your business?
Maintaining a certain level of cash
requires planning and may require
outside money to help preserve your cash
position. MTF Finance Rolleston is a local
business that provides capital to fund
vehicles, machinery, plant and equipment
for personal and business customers.
While many companies are centralising
their operations, MTF Finance has chosen
the opposite and aims to be available
locally. As one of the 48 nationwide MTF
Finance franchises, Dan Groundwater
opened MTF Finance Rolleston in June
2021 at 817 Jones Road. Being available
locally, Dan says, “You can actually walk
in the door and talk to the person making
the decisions.”
With over ten years of banking and
financial experience, including working
in London, Dan is the face behind MTF
Finance Rolleston. As a business owner,
he understands the challenges businesses
face. Dan is down-to-earth and keen to
‘keep things real’ with his professional and
friendly nature. His extensive knowledge
of banking and its processes enables him
to facilitate efficient service to customers
looking for funding. He is personally
invested in each client and builds a
relationship with them to understand
their business needs, with a firm belief
in fairness and tailoring loans to suit
individual circumstances.
With careful consideration of a
customer’s needs and situation, Dan can
usually have the loan approved and funds
forwarded within the day (subject to
responsible lending enquiries and checks).
Dan doesn’t look to make things fit a
specific box but instead looks at the whole
picture and uses lateral thinking to meet
his clients’ needs best.
Dan is available to provide help and
information about funding and accessing
capital to help businesses grow. MTF
Finance Rolleston is about “locals helping
locals”, and Dan is available anytime to
talk about the upcoming plans for your
business and can provide funding for
business vehicles, machinery, plant and
equipment.
To discuss your business needs,
visit Dan at 817 Jones Road, Rolleston
or contact him on 027 503 6104 or
mtf.co.nz/Rolleston. Offer of finance
is subject to terms, conditions, lending
criteria, responsible lending inquiries
and checks. See mtf.co.nz/terms for
MY PRIDE AND JOY
Trillo Metals 32nd
Muscle Car Madness
Rangiora A&P Showgrounds Jan 22nd and 23rd
The Canterbury car scene, along with
the rest of the country, appears to have
become non-existent with most being
cancelled or at best postponed for long
periods. Our own Rolleston Motorfest was
canned along with the Hanmer Springs
and Cromwell events; even the Vintage
Car Club lost its swap meet for another
year. At this stage, Methven is on just after
Xmas.
The good news is that Trillo Metals
Muscle Car Madness is a happening thing
under the passport system, a requirement
of the A&P Association who own the
venue. Public days are Saturday, January
22nd and 23rd from 9am to 4pm. Entry
is $20 per adult with under 16 years free,
and a discount two-day pass (public hours
only) is just $30.
Thousands of cars will be on display,
including over 200 cars from the North
Island. It appears that due to not being
able to jump on a plane and travel
overseas for that long-awaited holiday,
people have been spending up ‘big time’
on new toys. These include motorcycles,
boats and collector cars - including hot
rods and muscle cars.
Large numbers arriving include 53
people from Toy Shed in Rotorua, another
50 or so from Bay Rodders in Tauranga,
Mac’s speed, Rocket speed equipment
and large contingents from Palmy and
Wellington.
Local Rolleston man Ian Paki
debuted his 1963 Pontiac
Catalina at last year’s show.
Recently
finished by
Event
Covid passport will be required for event entry.
32nd YEAR
Pete Schmanski is bringing his eightsecond
nitro-burning 1934 Ford coupe,
Garth Hogan hopes to bring his 1334
roadster salt car along, which ran over 190
mph on Bonneville. This car is believed to
be the world’s fastest flathead V8. A lot of
new top cars will debut at this show.
Trillo Metals Muscle Car Madness is
one of the top three shows in the country
and a major drawcard for Rangiora. The
town was unable to run the A&P show,
the rodeo never went ahead either, and the
great thing about our show is that it brings
over four million dollars into the Rangiora
community.
The rockabilly show is extremely
popular and has classes for all ages,
including the real littlies. This event kicks
off on Saturday at noon, followed by
the Stadium Finance burnout comp at
approximately 1.30 pm, with finals held on
Sunday. At this stage, Greg Murphy will be
a guest judge.
The first official event is the ‘Twin
Towns’ on Thursday night, starting in the
main street of Rangiora and then heading
out to Kaiapoi - Real Steel Riverton
(Invercargill) sponsor the event. Around
300 cars usually attend this run. Friday
is the Classic Cover Insurance Great
Summer Fun run out to Ashley Gorge for
lunch.
The main show is on Saturday and
Sunday. If you have a showable classic,
please put it on display - entry is through
gate one but if the arena is full, go to gate
two.
Mercedes powers
into EV market
THE WINNER of last year’s
New Zealand Motoring
Writers’ Guild Car of the
Year went to Mercedes-
Benz’s EQC 400.
What was most significant
about that mantle is the
EQC is fully electric, it’s a
plug-in.
In the context of things,
nothing about that is
surprising. For one, the
EQC is a worthy winner,
it’s a mighty fine sport
utility vehicle and an
advance in technological
engineering, while for the
other, Mercedes-Benz has
indicated it is expecting all of
its vehicles to be electric by
2030, that’s the direction the
company his heading.
How delays in this
process, caused by the havoc
Covid-19 has created, is
anyone’s guess, but I can
report that the second
full-electric Mercedes-
Benz is now available and
it is a finalist in this year’s
NZMWG Car of the Year.
Voting will be completed
in February and the winner
announced then.
The EQA, as its
nomenclature suggests, is
based on the concept and
size of GLA and it is available
here in just one variation,
that being designated 250.
The EQA 250 drives to the
front wheels only, if you want
another electric motor sitting
at the rear axle so that fourwheel-drive
can be initiated
you’ll have to wait for the
EQA 350 when it lands here
in the second quarter next
year.
For the technically minded
the EQC is driven by a
single electric motor that
sits transversely under the
bonnet. Power is transferred
by a fully automatic
transmission which does
have pre-set steps that can
be manually manipulated
through a steering wheelmounted
paddle shift
system, should you wish
to take command over the
driveline.
Mercedes-Benz rates the
electric motor with 140kW
of power and a healthy
375Nm of torque. Take into
account that both those
figures are available from
zero revolutions, when the
accelerator is pressed you
get all that energy on tap.
Consequently, the EQA feels
strong from a standstill, it
will launch to 100km/h in
8.9sec.
More importantly, the
EQA will travel up to 480km
on a single charge, that
supposing all the conditions
are favourable such as
elevation, load in the car,
wind, and speed at which the
EQA is travelling. I had two
Southern Motorway runs in
the evaluation car and there
was never a point where I
reached range anxiety, with
a sensible driving style I
Wednesday December 22 2021 Selwyn Times 27
MERCEDES-BENZ EQA 250: Fully electric with a
claimed 480km range.
believe Mercedes-Benz’s
claims would be achievable.
The EQA will charge
from low to full capacity
in around 10 hours on a
domestic household charge,
and around 30min at a
designated rapid charging
station to reach 80 per cent
from 10 per cent.
• Price – Mercedes-Benz
EQA 250, $85,500
• Dimensions – Length,
4463mm; width, 1834mm;
height, 1620mm
• Configuration – Electric
motor, front-wheel-drive,
140kW, 375Nm, automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8.9sec
Since plug-ins have
become popular I’ve been a
little hesitant about electric
vehicle charging on the
Kiddie property. However,
after a check and a long chat
with the electrician who
services our home I’ve been
told that it is perfectly safe
to charge an EV’s batteries
on our old wiring. That
is so long as it is a direct
connection to the wall
without using a multi-pack,
double plug or extension
cable. That should also put a
lot more buyers at ease, even
though a wallbox would be
preferable, you don’t have to
have that.
Driving the EQA is little
different from that of the
petrol-powered G-Class
models, and it has all those
subtle Mercedes-Benz quirks
that makes the brand stand
out as a manufacturer, things
such as the door-mounted
seat adjusters and steering
column gear selector (right
side).
However, you can
guarantee that Mercedes-
Benz has loaded the EQA to
be as desirable as possible,
it gets a full suite of kit,
and the test car was loaded
with a few extra goodies
taking the price to almost
$100k. In standard form it
sits at $85,500 which is still
a sizeable outlay, but you
are buying a sport utility
vehicle that is adaptable and
versatile, and if you are a
person who wants to tackle
the luxury EV market, then
this is the car for you. It is
many models in one and
represents luxury and value
all in one package.
I presented the evaluation
car with a few tight corners
in the Selwyn district, and
can report it has all the fine
handling qualities you’d expect
in any Mercedes-Benz model,
it steers directly on its 20in
Michelin tyres and has firm
feedback at the steering wheel.
The suspension is a fully
independent type with
spring and damper rates that
cushion every road ripple
but keep the body tight and
controlled in a corner.
Inside, there is a heavy
digital presence along with
manual controls that have
deliberate haptic feel and
they offer familiarity. The
EQA 250 was also fitted
with Mercedes-Benz’s user
experience innovation
package where you can
request many functions
intuitively controlled by
voice, touch or gestures.
These are all elements that
make Mercedes-Benz stand
out as a brand, you get a lot
of car for the money and one
that will also give you peace
of mind – the batteries are
warranted for eight years or
160,000km.
During that time you will
have a rewarding driving
experience, not only forgoing
all of those bills you get with
petrol-engined cars, but
also the feel you get with
electric power, it is different
but involving and certainly
satisfying.
Electric vehicles are fast
becoming the norm, if
that becomes the case, I’m
worried the national grid
won’t cope with the demand
as drivers arrive home and
get those cables plugged in.
An acquaintance who works
in the power supply industry
has told me it could be a
problem in years to come.
Let’s hope the companies
that generate the power are
switched on to this.

PETS & PAWS
Silly season
hazards for
your pets
It’s that time of the year again when the
Christmas decorations go up, and the
chocolates and decadent food comes out.
This Christmas, SPCA is encouraging
pet owners not to share human food with
their furry family members and to be
mindful of where they leave edible treats
or festive decorations that may be toxic to
pets.
SPCA Scientific Officer Dr Alison
Vaughan says while many pet owners
know chocolate is dangerous for dogs and
cats, there’s also an array of festive foods
that people indulge in over the holiday
period that can be harmful to pets.
“I know it can be hard to resist a pair
of puppy eyes begging for a piece of
Christmas cake or pudding, but your
pet could become seriously ill if they eat
what you’re eating these holidays,” says Dr
Vaughan. “Animals digest food differently
to people, and some foods which are
safe for us can have severe health
consequences if eaten by our pets.”
As well as chocolate, foods such as
macadamia nuts, grapes or raisins in
fruit cake and Christmas pudding, corn
cobs, onions, avocado, turkey skin, pork
crackling, fatty meats, alcohol, caffeine,
and Xylitol (a common ingredient in
sugarless treats and sugarless gum): all
have the potential to be harmful to pets.
Owners need to be extra vigilant at
this time of year, as many will know how
quickly pets can get into food they’re not
supposed to. Gifts under the tree, food left
on tables, in rubbish bags and in handbags
are common places where pets will often
steal foods that can make them sick.
Keep up with the water – but be careful
WATER IS a vital ingredient of
any successful garden.
It is a key element in producing
healthy tasty vegetables, fruits and
for maintaining flowers, pots and
lawns.
Lack of plant performance in
the summer is often a result of
poor or inadequate watering.
Water is the backbone of any successful
crop, whether it be edible,
flowering or ornamental.
In summer, soil can become
dry, hard and repel water. When
you water the dry pots the water
quickly runs down the edges
of the pot and out through the
drainage holes without being
absorbed (wasting the majority of
the water that was applied).
A good trick to re-hydrate
overly dry pots or hanging baskets
is to place them in a bucket
or trough of water and leave them
in there soaking until the water
stops bubbling. This may take a
day or overnight but the root zone
will be refreshed and your plants
will thank you for it.
A smart proactive way to help
your soil hold onto moisture over
the warm months is to add a few
essentials to it to increase its water
holding capacity.
Mulch
A thick layer of mulch helps the
soil hold onto moisture for longer
periods. Before adding mulch to
the gardens, water the area well.
This will trap moisture in the soil
and provide plants a cool moist
root zone.
Pelletised pea straw is about
the easiest mulch to apply, simply
add an even layer over the soil.
When water is applied, it swells
four times its original size making
it very economical, easy and very
tidy to apply — no messy hands
or wheelbarrows required with
this stuff.
Decorative bark and pine
mulches are widely available and
look smart once applied. Sheep
pellets are fabulous mulch as they
feed and retain moisture at the
same time. Sheep pellets are a favorite
with worms too. It’s a good
idea to feed the ‘soil workers’ over
the warmer months too.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Soil wetters
Once applied to the soil they
enable it to hold onto more moisture.
This makes your water go
further and keeps plants healthy
and productive at the same time.
Simply sprinkle onto the soil or
pots and blend in. Reapply each
season to ensure the best water
retention.
Ground covers
Covering the soil with ground
covering plants will limit the
amount of moisture drawn out
of the soil on hot days. In the
vege garden crops like pumpkins,
melons and courgettes cover the
soil and protect crops growing
around them.
WATERING HINTS
• Water roots not foliage.
Plants take in water
through the root zone
so watering the foliage is
unnecessary and can cause
leaf burning. Water in the
morning or early evening
avoiding the heat in the
middle of the day.
• It’s best to water deeply
once or twice a week
rather than a little each
day. It is wasteful to apply
water faster than the soil
can soak it in.
• Check leaking hoses
or taps, they can waste a
GARDENING 29
ESSENTIAL:
Water the
roots of plants
for effective
hydration.
lot of water. A dripping
tap can leak up to
100-litres of water a day.
Water the garden not the
driveway, path or paved
areas.
• Use a soak hose in
garden beds rather than a
sprinkler. When planting,
group plants together with
similar water needs, this
will also help simplify the
design of an automatic
watering system
• Phone a friend — if you
are away over the holiday
season ask a friend or
neighbour to pop in and
water your treasures.
Merry Christmas
from IntellIgro
finishing touches in preparation for Christmas
and the holiday season. If you are searching
From the team at Intelligro, we wish you
Top tips if you are heading
away over summer
• Add mulch to the garden to help conserve
water and keep the weeds down
• Invest in an irrigation system with a timer
to keep your garden watered
• Give everything a good feed and water to
help sustain growth
Exterior renovation
and Landscaping
While renovating the interior of your home
creates a comfortable living environment
and improves its re-sale potential, the
outside of the property is equally important.
Remember, first impressions count!
Creating an attractive outdoor environment
may involve landscaping, plantings, decks,
pergolas, garaging, fencing, paths, entrance
and driveway, in addition to the exterior
decoration of the house itself. However, be
careful not to over-capitalise on elaborate
landscaping, if a simple make-over can
achieve a desirable effect.
Draw up plans and a budget for the areas
you plan to re-develop. Ensure any additional
structures such as garaging, decks,
retaining walls and fences have the required
permits and seek advice on the ideal building
materials and methods.
Planting
Discuss with your local garden centre or
nursery which plants will best suit the size
sun and situation of your section and don’t
design a labour intensive garden if your
lifestyle won’t allow you the time to look
after it!
Fences and Gates
These should provide privacy and security,
while also allowing access to the property
for visitors. Try to choose fence and gate
styles that complement the age and style
of your home. Consider additional aspects
such as light, cost, maintenance, traffic
noise and street appeal when making your
selection.
Entrance
The entrance to your house should be a focal
point to welcome visitors, provide easy access
and visually link the inside and outside
Darfield 11 Killead Avenue
There's nothing like new
This fabulous, brand new 242sqm (more or less)
family home (to be built) will be set on a 809sqm
(more or less) section. It will boast four double
bedrooms (master with walk-in robe), and two
bathrooms (including ensuite off the master) as well
as a separate toilet. A well-appointed kitchen with
modern appliances and walk-in pantry. Open plan
dining/living area and separate lounge as well as a
study/office area. Excellent indoor/outdoor flow to a
sunny space ideal for entertaining. Double glazing, a
log burner, heat pump and triple, internal access
garaging complete this enticing package.
aspects of the property. Whether a traditional
verandah, a glass porch, canvas canopy,
pillared portico or simply an attractive front
door and steps, ensure the colours, shape,
style and surfaces and in keeping with the
original architecture.
Decks, Patios and Courtyards
The New Zealand climate has always
encouraged exterior extensions to the
house whether a colonial verandah, timber
deck, paved patio or European courtyard.
Screened for shelter and privacy they are
attractive “outdoor rooms” for recreation,
entertaining and outdoor dining and a sure
way to enhance the value of almost any
home.
Garages and Carports
Depending on the age of your home, garage
space may be a problem is there is insufficient
access to the side or rear of the house.
It may be possible to construct a garage or
carport close to the street frontage. In order
not to detract from the visual appeal of the
property, it is important that the dimensions,
design and materials be in keeping
with the existing house. Skillful landscaping
and planting can “soften” the impact.

How does country living close to Rolleston sound.!
A 10-minute drive from Rolleston sees you arrive promptly at your 10 plus hectares of Tranquility. Originally part of an
old sheep farm you get a great feel as you meander the driveway. Adding an exotic touch are some of the biggest
Cacti you will ever see in the farm garden. The roughcast 189m2 home with its 3 bedrooms has had some
development since its build back in 1920. The living room diesel fire guarantees a lovely warmth in those winter
months. The farms old raised board woolshed smacks of character with covered yards nearby. Add in the 5 bay hay
shed and the grain store and garage the property has room for you to add your touch. The owners say SELL SELL SELL
