HoYeon Jung
The celebrity under the spotlight is South Korean model &
actress, HoYeon Jung. Commenting on her eclectic looks is
Singapore’s Alex Neo, Director of The Lawn Hairdressing.
Getty Images
HoYeon Jung shot to international stardom earlier this year when she decided to make the transition from modelling to
acting. For a girl keen to become recognised outside her own country of South Korea, the perfect opportunity arose when
she was cast to make her acting debut in the 2021 Netflix K-drama, Squid Game. She plays Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean
defector and pickpocket who needs money to support her younger brother and track down her estranged mother. Before
Squid Game, HoYeon Jung had already enjoyed a successful career as a model. She had become known by designers as the
“red-haired Asian” and was accredited in Vogue magazine as one of Seoul’s top modelling talents of 2015. This year, she
has also become the most-followed South Korean actress on Instagram – the culmination of both her successful modelling
career and the more recent fame that Squid Game has brought to her door. When it comes to her hairstyles and general
appearance, HoYeon Jung does not shy away from experimentation – she is happy to try out an eclectic mix of looks,
ranging from classically chic through to avant-garde.
ALEX NEO, SALON DIRECTOR OF THE LAWN HAIRDRESSING
All the looks here are pretty special in their own ways, but I think the look below left is the best on
HoYeon. She exudes a natural beauty and confidence and most importantly her hair style does not
overshadow her. Her natural style (far left) makes a nice silhouette, but this style makes her face
look more squarish, as there is too much emphasis on the lower jaw. Looking at other images of
her, where there are more looser waves, her face looks gentler, softer and less angular. As for the
colour I would say that being the Asian Redhead is absolutely on point for Ho Yeon, but light brown
also suits her very well as it gives her a very feminine, soft and natural energy. Finally, I would
say that the hairstylists working for Squid Game really knew what they were doing when they cut
her hair that way. It wasn’t at all flattering, so it worked so well for her character in the show!
This year, HoYeon
Jung has also become
the most-followed
South Korean actress
on Instagram, the
platform on which
she is a regular
contributor and
highly-regarded
influencer. To date
she has no fewer
than 23.1 million
Beautiful Brunettes
Move over, blondies! Brunette is the hottest color trend this
season, from cappuccino to ebony and everything in between.
Brunettes are no longer dull or mousey, but rather luxurious and sensual. Just add a touch of dimension
or detail with balayage or other techniques to warm tones like cinnamon, chestnut, and caramel or cool
ones like ash, cacao, and burgundy. Ask your colorist to open up a world of possibilities!
BOHEMIAN PUNK
Raven black hair is perfect for this ecletic Bohemian look with an exotic oriental vibe. A perfect example of less being more. The finish is
smooth with an ever-so-subtle texture for some soft, touchable volume. The idea of the half-open zip accessory being used as a sort of punk
snood for the half-beehive in the back is brilliant. This image is the ultimate example of brunette hair being a highly artistic proposal of
alternative elegance.
SUNSET TO TWILIGHT
The inspiration for this collection moves from Sunset to Twilight, encompassing a Brunette Plum, Melding Copper, Red, Oranges
shaped into a bob with whispers of Violet and Blue hues. The shape of this bob is softer and moves freely with a multi-texture and
asymmetric overlay fringe. What better way to celebrate the winter season than with warmth and sophistication?
TRUE TO YOURSELF
This look from the Go Goldwell Masterbrand Campaign says it all. This espresso brunette is the
ideal base for slightly lighter contours to fame the face. Then from the chin down a grayish-teal
sombre is both subtle and soft. Another enormous advantage is that maintenance is minimum. So
this technique makes it the perfect option for the client on the go who still wants to make a fashionforward
statement. Experiment with different hues, not only blue, but greys, reds, violets and more.
TAKING IT TO NEW HEIGHTS
Not your everyday updo! This look is perfect for any formal occasion. The sleek polished finish enhances
the reflections of light on the dark base. The sculpted interwoven layers lend an artful touch of
sophistication, while the runaway wisps evoke a sense of rebellion. Simplicity and complexity wrapped
up in one magically elegant coif.
WILD AND WISPY
“Brunette is a colour that every colourist loves to work with – it can be filled with warmth, rich and glossy or can
be cool, creative and completely bespoke, all to suit the client, their hair vision and their lifestyle. When creating
this image, I want a colour that would work alongside the models complexion as well as the haircut, and help me
create the statement that I had envisioned. The colour created, worked so well with the lighting on the shoot, that
it showed off the multi-dimensional tones used throughout the look to give a much more creative look.”
EASY DOES IT
“I love how the strong look of this a very on-trend cheekbone grazing bob complements the
beautiful brunette hair colour. Brunettes are always on trend, but for 2021 and 2022 brunettes will
be multidimensional. You will see a number of different brunette tones through the hair, giving
dimension, depth and also a reflective shine. We wanted the brunette tones to stand out and enhance
the cut, yet to look a incredibly healthy, soft, and glossy.
DREAMING WIDE AWAKE
“This collection was inspired by the stillness of water and the reflection of the sky when it hit the water during the morning moon.
One of the directions I was moving towards was simplicity; soft solid hair color, white blonde, blue black, golden dark blondes and
espresso. Haircuts are precision, classic and defined,” explained Lisa Vann. The purity of this rich saturated espresso tone is almost
too perfect, so the touch of the crinkly fly-aways keeps this angelic vision grounded.
KEEPING IT SIMPLE
“Brunette is a gorgeous colour to shoot images with. It’s depth and slight mystery transpires beautifully through your images and
I love working with this hair colour. I wanted to pair the brunette with a classic, simple bob. Movement in the hair was important to
show off not only the colour, but the shape too. Brunette is a colour that suits many different skin tones and complexions due to the
different hues that run through it. Adding warmth to classic brunette works beautifully, too.”
“Inspired by the concept of “NATURAL, SOFT & ESSENTIAL” to embrace the feminine, hair must have movement. The creative
direction is going back to basics for comfort and creating a harmonious balance.” This delicious cinnamon shade and long,
touchable locks gently soften the overall mood of this look.
SMOKING HOT!
“I used Newance Fashion Brown Shades to make different colour placements throughout the hair using the Airtouch technique.
I paid special attention to the shape and structure of the head to create a seamless blend of colour. Also, this technique can
be applied to perfectly blend multiple natural brown shades, such as cool brown and warm brown; it adds translucency and
smokiness to the colour result.”
JUST BE WHO YOU ARE
“This image epitomises our brand; gorgeous, wearable hair, and natural makeup, so the individual
looks and feels like the very best version of themselves. This tone-on-tone effect was achieved using
a soft colour palette that complements the model’s skin-tone, whilst leaving the authenticity of her
natural root intact. To emphasise the beauty of the hair’s natural texture, colour placement was really
important. Ribbons of caramel applied from the mid-section to the tip enhance the hair’s natural
curl and movement, resulting in a sun-kissed goddess vibe - and our vision of modern beauty!”
BLENDING BRUNETTES
“What I love about this image is the way the hair is dressed with the curls and texture, which really
showcases the hair colour. The shape of the hair lets us create extra dimension by layering multiple tones
of brunettes, copper brunettes, mahogany brunette and ash brunette on top of each other in a layered
system and this really created depth and texture so it wasn’t flat and dull.”
From
East toWest
Beauty is in a state of continuous fluidity across the
continents and setting us new goals. Here we make
comparisions that span the entirety of the globe. Daniela Giambrone
Hair Hyunwoo Lee For 198201111959 Korea
Creativity evolves and flows into the collective sensitivity of individuals, wherever they reside. Beauty,
meanwhile, mirrors society while anticipating and summarising its characteristics through time. There’s
no doubt that hairstylists have a huge role in this creative global process, because it is also thanks to their
vision and their work that the concept of contemporary beauty is built up. Here, Estetica compares two
stylists - one from the East, one from the West, who, despite being poles apart demonstrate some very
strong connections. Out of their words a diversity emerges, one which not only characterises them, but
also highlights how universal the language of beauty really is - regardless of space and time. Here are
Korean, Hyunwoo Lee and Belgian, Joeri Rouffa's answers to exactly the same set of questions:
20 artist

What does ‘hair’ mean to you?
HWL: It is my past, present and future. It is everything to me.
JR: What I find really interesting is that hair is always itself. Let me explain: I love the fact of being able
to transform it - sculpt and create the most eccentric and crazy styles - but that it always return to its
natural state of origin.
What is the most interesting aspect of being a hairstylist?
HWL: The current focus of Korean hairstyling has really shifted. When I started this job, I tended to do
research and study overseas designers, I was influenced by them. Today Korean hairstylists have
improved and know how to create really innovative and original looks.
JR: Being able to transform a model for a photoshoot and then bring her back to her original identity at
the end of the session.
What future do you predict for hairdressing?
HWL: Korean hairdressing is not as developed as in Europe or the USA, I expect a continuous
evolution, which will allow us to go on experimenting with how we work.
Avant Garde
Hyunwoo Lee is a hair
artist based in Seoul.
Having discovered
his passion for hair
and beauty at a tender
age, he immediately
started working in
salons and shortly
after in the fashion
world. Encouraged by
this environment and
its experiences, Lee
started working as an
independent artist in
2016. His attentive eye
for the latest trends
and interest in the
people who surround
him are the main tools
of his work: bold and
groundbreaking, but
with a great poetic vein.

JR: There are so many opportunities out there and I feel that we are experiencing an era in which each of us has their
own opinion and wants to do things our own way. When you walk through the streets of Paris or New York you see all
sorts of hair looks, from vintage to punk, from smooth to super textured. I think the future of is heading towards the
individual expression: everyone chooses what is best for them
How are standards of beauty changing?
HWL: I think today’s standards are more oriented towards uniqueness. In the past, the models were selected from
agencies and they were all tall and slim. Today, the great fashion houses seem more interested in focusing on ordinary
people, even if they do not represent the stereotypes of ‘perfection’.
JR: I definitely perceive a change, models now represent the common people more. Consumers must be able to recognize
themselves in images in magazines and fashion shows. I think the iconic models of the past are disappearing. This makes
me think about how to change fashion by using models which encapsulate all interpretations of beauty.
a sense of true passion
that really puts
hairdressing to the
test. Together with a
methodical attention
for quality, detail and
In your opinion, is it possible to create ‘everyday’ Avant Garde?
HWL: This is the problem all hairstylists face. Generally, stylists are forced to stay within certain limits,
and often advertising requires natural hair, so attention is on the product to be sold. However, I believe it
is important to define what is meant by ‘everyday’ people. Only very few people lead cutting-edge lives,
most need to conform to the demands of their daily lives. It only through breaking those ties of
conformity that you can ever think about change.
JR: Of course! Some ‘everyday’ people can carry off an Avant Garde cut very well. I think it immediately
makes them become even more interesting.
W
e at Estetica Asia are
delighted to be able to
publish this exclusive
interview with the
Chairman & C.E.O.
of Takara Belmont,
Hidetaka Yoshikawa.
He discusses past, present and some
very exciting plans for the future!
Estetica: Mr. Yoshikawa, please
remind our readers why this year
has been so exciting and significant
for you all at Takara Belmont?
Hidetaka Yoshikawa: It’s because
we have been celebrating our 100th
anniversary - on October 5 2021, to
be exact! We see this celebration as a
tribute to everyone who has
supported us and used our products
over the years, including of course
our very important customers in the
hairdressing & beauty industry. We
would like to take this opportunity
to extend our sincere appreciation
to everyone concerned.
Please give us an insight into
Takara Belmont’s story so far.
We started off a century ago as a
small foundry with only several
employees in the industrial area
known as the “Manchester of the
East” in Osaka. Over the years the
company moved with the times and
expanded its business under the
motto of “supporting the beauty and
health of people”, going on to make
major inroads into the global
market and the industries of dental
& medical equipment and beauty, as
well as by developing cosmetics.
Today, we have grown into a
company that sells products in more

than 120 countries around the world.
The company now has overseas
subsidiaries in 12 countries, and
sells hairdressing- and medicalrelated
products to hairdressers,
beauticians, nail artists, dentists and
doctors in the world. The products
sold overseas include hair salon
equipment brand-named “Takara
Belmont,” hair salon exclusive
professional cosmetic products
named “LebeL” and “ESTESSiMO,”
and dental and medical equipment
called “Belmont.”
Which was your most recent hair
product launch?
In October we launched LebeL
ONE in Japan. It’s a full hair care
range centred around a shampoo
Horos
innovation based on cutting-edge
stem cell research. The philosophy
behind the range is that a habit
repeated every day has the power
to change the future of your hair.
Through daily home care and
professional salon care, you will
achieve a self-moisturizing scalp
and achieve truly beautiful hair.
Can you be more specific about
how Takara Belmont works with
our industry?
Takara Belmont, which entered the
hairdressing field by producing
barber chairs, has expanded the
scope of its business to manufacture
and sell salon chairs, shampoo units,
hair processors, beauty equipment,
and cosmetic products for hair, skin
and nail care. Moreover, the company
designs hair salons and provides
counselling on the management of
such salons, including technical
instructions for their staffers, thus
supporting the management of hair
salons on various levels.
The last couple of years must
have been quite challenging for
you, as it has been for all the
hair and beauty industry.
The need for society to maintain
social distancing and avoid physical
contact due to the COVID-19
pandemic was of course a major
problem for the hair & beauty
industry. Despite these times of
great uncertainty, our mission is to
ensure the safety and wellbeing of
those people in any workplace
where physical contact is required.
We will also continue to contribute
to all the industries we work with
through tireless efforts and
unlimited resources of creativity.
What about the NEXT 100 years?
"Rise into beauty, Walk into life."
As our centenary commemorations
come to their close, Takara Belmont
has defined in its corporate purpose
how the company should aim to
contribute to society over the next
100 years. It is human beings’
universal goal to get pleasure from
having beauty in their lives. Takara
Belmont sees responding to this
universal desire as its permanent
corporate purpose. Furthermore, all
the Takara Belmont group companies
will join forces and continue to
take on the challenge of further
contributing to the development
of the industries of our customers,
squarely address the realization of
a sustainable society through our
business, and help people everywhere
live a fruitful and beautiful life.
We know Takara Belmont is
always very mindful of the
importance of sustainability and
protecting the environment.
Can you tell us about any special
initiatives on this subject?
We started a project called
“Re:bonis” with the goal of creating
MILK by Ura
new value by eliminating waste
synthetic leather from our own
factory during the manufacturing
process of chairs. This project
utilises approximately 140 types of
waste synthetic leather in various
colours by giving them new usage
and value, both inside and outside
the company. Also from the
perspective of achieving Sustainable
Development Goals, we use
excellent biodegradable cleaning
ingredients for our new shampoo
LebeL ONE to protect precious
water resources. In addition, by
cutting the cleaning component by
30% and shortening the rinsing
time, we can expect to save about
8.8% of water wastage, with a
predicted annual water saving of
4,726 tons.
Finally, Mr. Yoshikawa, please can
you remind us about your very
exciting news for 2022?
Yes! We have decided to hold the
international beauty festival – the
Takara World Business Congress
2022 (TWBC2022) at the Pacifico
Yokohama in Japan. We had
planned to hold “TWBC2021”
in 2021, however, due to the
coronavirus pandemic, it was
inevitably cancelled. After careful
consideration, we have decided
to hold it on November 21st and
22nd 2022. We are planning to
participate not only at the venue
but also online. Please look forward
to it. Further details will be
announced on our website as and
when they become available.
Thank you for talking to us,
AHS 2021
Held on the 9th and 10th October, 2021 Virtual
Alternative Hair Show was a dazzling success, watched
by an audience spanning every corner of the globe.
This year’s Alternative Hair Show was held in a digital format – an excellent decision by the organisers, as it
overrode any problems caused by the ongoing travel restrictions which continue to cause such disruption to
the many international visitors who generally love to participate at the event in-person. The two-day event was
presented by Alternative Hair Founder, Tony Rizzo and Worldwide President, Anthony Mascolo and was
broadcast from the grounds of a quintessential English country house, blending traditional design with
futuristic concepts. As always, all proceed from the show so to support The Alternative Hair Charitable
Foundation and Blood Cancer UK. Sponsors for this year’s Alternative Hair Show were Premier Sponsor:
Wella; Charity Sponsors: TIGI, Infringe, Linda Hair, Sun Sea and AH products.
The digital format did nothing to distract from the anticipation and excitement felt by the thousands industry
professionals who participated; furthermore, the virtual format enabled the participating artistic teams to take
their creativity to an even higher level showing the international audience an incredible level of both
imagination and technical skill.
THE VISIONARY AWARD FINALS
Day One was dedicated to the Visionary Award Finals, which have now become so popular that it was felt
they warranted their own show time. A first this year was also the New Visionaries Video Show, which gave
past finalists and winners of the Visionary Award the opportunity to create their own, amazing show.
Everyone who participated agreed that the Video show was a valuable addition to the event’s proceedings and
that it will doubtless have an exciting future.
AN ARTISTIC MEDIUM
Historically hairstyles have taken on many connotations: from an insignia of social status as in elaborate 17th-century
wigs, to Lady Godiva’s eroticism, to the bobbed feminists of the 1920s, to Hair the Musical of the hippie counterculture and
sexual revolution of the late 1960s. Today’s hairstylists are a new breed who embrace hair as a blank canvas and sculptural
medium, pushing the limits of their creativity, also thanks to innovative products, tools and techniques. A contemporary
reflection of the 21st-century individualism.
W
For the 5 th consecutive year, KMS has been
the hair sponsor of the Redress Design
Award, an event which supports sustainable
activities in the community and which took
place in Hong Kong in September.
ith nature a continuous
source of inspiration for
us all, KMS is dedicated
to promoting and raising
industry awareness on the
importance of environmental
protection. This is just one of
the many reasons why the brand
continues to be so supportive of the
Redress Design Award. KMS Guest
Hairstylist and International
Session Stylist Marco Chan led
KMS Hong Kong Artist Team
Anthony Cheng and Jonas Chan in
the creation of two outstanding
looks entitled ‘Gradients of Reality’,
inspired by the aesthetics of
cyberspace. These striking, yet
simple hairstyles brought the
finalists’ beautiful garments into
crisp focus, highlighted against a
backdrop of gradient light. This
represented the ether of the virtual
world and highlighting the need for
creative solutions towards circular
design, which will help ease the
mounting levels of textile waste
around the globe.
One of the many highlights of the Kao
the Global Creative Awards evening with
the live announcement of the final winners.
(top): Avant Garde Stylist of the Year Gold Winner
• Sean Chiu (Hong Kong)
(bottom): New Talent Colourist of the Year Bronze Winner
• Chloe Ng (China)
T
he success by hair
professionals in Asia at
the Global Creative
Awards was outstanding,
with them scooping
FIVE awards! We have
interviewed the winners:
➤ AVANT GARDE STYLIST
OF THE YEAR GOLD WINNER
• SEAN CHIU (HONG KONG)
Why was it important for you to
enter the Global Creative Awards?
I found it allowed me to expand my
horizons through learning from
different stylists and it was a good
platform for all of us to learn from
each other globally.
Do you think it’s important to
enter international competitions
like this?
Yes, I do. I promise myself to always
try and be the best I can. Also, it
allows more hair professionals to
create, to challenge themselves and
to express what ‘hair’ really means.
How did you feel about this being
a virtual experience?
‘Virtual’ has been the only way to
keep things happening. I felt great,
but if it had been a live event, that
would have been perfect.
What was the inspiration behind
the images in your collection?
It was based on the time being
affected by Covid. Everything has a
cycle we just need to embrace the
present and be patient for the great
times ahead.
Are there any friends or colleagues
that you’d like to thank for helping
support you on this journey?
I would like to thank Goldwell, my
family, my photographer Kenneth
and M PLUS salon for supporting
and helping me with ideas
throughout this journey.
➤ NEW TALENT COLOURIST
OF THE YEAR BRONZE
WINNER • CHLOE NG (CHINA)
What do the Global Creative
Awards mean to you and how do
you felt about winning an award?
This has been an amazing
opportunity to gain some great
recognition for my work as a hair
professional and colourist. When
I heard my name called out at the
awards ceremony, I felt so happy
and excited!
Why do you think international
competitions are important?
Yes, because you can gain
international recognition, be known
by more people and gain more
professional knowledge from being
part of it.
Explain a bit more about your
winning collection and your
inspiration behind it.
Once I saw a picture of a fruit
vendor. The colour combinations on
his stall in the picture gave me an
incredible sensation, so I decided to
include those colours in my work.
What would you say to anyone
thinking of entering in the future?
I hope more people participate and

therefore can learn more about
styling and colouring hair. You
could be the next champion: grasp
the opportunity when you can!
Who would you like to thank?
I really appreciate my colleagues’
support and help all the time. They
also gave me a lot of advice about
finishing off my work. I really also
want to thank Goldwell for
providing such a good competition.
➤ NEW TALENT COLOURIST
OF THE YEAR GOLD WINNER
• HARLEY LIU (TAIWAN)
What did it mean to you to be part
of this amazing global experience?
Entering the Global Creative
Awards has been a great way to push
my boundaries. During the creative
process, I really learned some
special techniques.
What’s your opinion of international
competitions like the Global
Creative Awards ?
They are so important. Entering the
Global Creative Awards is a great
opportunity to review your
inner-self and push your limits.
Also, it is important for stylists from
Taiwan to be recognized on the
global stage.
How did you feel about this being
a virtual experience?
Even though the world is still
suffering from Covid, thanks to
Goldwell’s insistence and
perseverance we were at least able to
go ahead virtually. I’m definitely
looking forward to the 2022 event!
What was the inspiration behind
the images in your collection?
The inspiration came from Covid
times. Humankind had to change
the way it lived. I used the 2021
Pantone Colours - grey and yellow
- for my creation to reflect our
search for hope and balance.
Do you have any advice for future
Global Creative Awards entrants?
Never give up never give in. Keep
working and entering competitions,
the process of creation will help you
to step outside your comfort zone
and think outside the box.
Who would you like to thank?
Thanks of course to Goldwell for
the opportunity and also to Eros
Hairstyling and my bosses for their
support. Thanks also to my model,
for encouragement and allowing me
to use her hair without limits!
➤ AVANT GARDE STYLIST
OF THE YEAR SILVER WINNER
• SHI-HAN ZHOU (TAIWAN)
Why was it important for you to
enter the Global Creative Awards?
To build my self-motivation and
also for the wonderful enjoyment
of being able to create a unique
piece of work on my own. It was an
amazing feeling when I found out I’d
got through to the final 6 and then
to go on to win the Silver award!
How did you feel about this being
a virtual experience and what
about 2022 being live again?
All the arrangements for the virtual
event went so well, it’s also a real
innovation for our industry. I’m
definitely looking forward to next
year. I hope Covid goes away next
year, as I am more than ready for the
next round!
Talk us through the collection
which won you the Silver award?
My inspiration is the change in sky
when different weather fronts move
in. It’s something that changes all
the time - a bit like our moods:
happy, sad or angry.
Anyone you'd like to thank?
Thanks to Eros Hairstyling and also
my bosses for full support. Also
thanks to my bestie Eva He. She
showed her sincere encouragement
whenever I felt frustrated.
➤ SALON TEAM OF THE YEAR
SILVER WINNER • K-HANS
(TAIWAN)
Why was it important for you to
enter the Global Creative Awards?
As a salon owner, it is important to
encourage your team to step out
their comfort zone. Through the
Global Creative Awards journey, my
team could broaden their horizons
and gain unexpected experiences.
Which emotion did you feel when
you realised you’d won?
Personally, it was one of peace and
happiness for my team. They
worked so hard and gained such a
good result: their moment of glory!
Do you think it’s important to
enter international competitions?
Yes, sure. The Competition is more
about creative inspiration than
putting together general commercial
looks. It is a special experience that
you can’t gain in a salon.
Some advice for anyone thinking
of entering in the future?
For young stylists, don’t limit
yourself and try as hard as you
possibly can. For salon owners, give
your team you full support.
Who would you like to thank?
My team, K-Hans Salon and also
my personal close friend Sai, a
well-known director in Taiwan.
