Keeping our beaches safe
FAMILY: Kirsty Cullen on patrol at New Brighton Beach last weekend with daughter Phie and husband Andy.
Surf lifesavers are
a vital part of the
community. Reporter
Emily Moorhouse
catches up with the
‘Cullen patrol’
KIRSTY CULLEN has been a
member of the New Brighton
Surf Life Saving Club for a
decade and is yet to face a dull
day.
Since joining she has tried
her hand at several different
roles, helped more than 20 people
to become lifeguards and
won two awards for her efforts.
Kirsty joined the club along
with her husband Andy and
two daughters Ashley and Phie
in 2012 in a bid to give her girls
more knowledge on safety in
the water as they were learning
to surf.
“At the time they were budding
young little surfers following
us,” Kirsty said.
“We thought heck they’re really
out there in the water and
they don’t really know much
except for on their surf boards.”
Kirsty loved the club from
the beginning and it wasn’t
long before regular Sunday
sessions turned into taking on
a volunteer lifeguard role, also
gaining her inflatable rescue
boat qualifications.
Kirsty’s family followed
suit with Andy and her eldest
daughter Ashley qualifying as
lifeguards in 2015.
Soon, the whole family was
on patrol together when youngest
daughter Phie became a
lifeguard in 2018.
The family became known as
the “Cullen patrol” and Kirsty
said it sometimes felt like they
were just hanging out at the
beach together.
“I was really proud,” she said.
“It is a nice combo having the
family at the beach.”
Maintenance
schedule
closes
QE II pools
during
holidays
FINAL STAGES of maintenance
has meant the Taiora QE II pools
will be closed for two weeks from
Monday.
The city council said the work
was planned to “minimise the
impact on customers including
Swimsmsart lessons and group
bookings” with pools closed from
January 17-30.
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox
said the work is part of the city
council’s regular maintenance
schedule.
“We did as much as we could
during the level 3 Covid-19 restrictions
last year, when the pools
were closed to the public and
contractors were able to restart
working,” he said.
“However, we need to finish this
final bit so all the maintenance is
up-to-date.”
Work will include maintenance
of circulation pumps, filters, heating
systems and pool tanks as well
as installation of an automatic
door between the pool change
rooms and the reception to cut
down draughts coming from
reception through to the pool.
The city council is encouraging
people to use other facilities during
the closure period.
The rest of the facility, including
the gym and group fitness classes,
will remain open with pools set to
reopen January 31.
Fun run breathes life into Brighton
• Emily Moorhouse
KICK-STARTING the
revitalisation of New Brighton
is what the City2Surf will bring
when the fun run returns to its
original course, says Coastal
Ward city councillor Celeste
Donovan.
Donovan, along with New
Brighton Residents’ Association
members
and Coastal-
Burwood
Community
Board member
Jo Zervos
has been
advocating for
Celeste
Donovan
the event to be
brought back to
the suburb for
almost three years.
Donovan said there was
“behind-the-scenes lobbying”
to encourage organisers to bring
the event back to New Brighton
after the finish line was moved
to Ferrymead following the 2011
earthquake.
“Originally, the course was
moved back to QE II, then they
decided to end it at Rawhiti
Domain, which is great, because
it means the course itself is going
back to where it was originally,”
said Donovan.
The event, which takes place
on March 20, will start at
Cathedral Square and end at
Rawhiti Domain, near the beach,
to allow for a post-run dip.
“I think (New Brighton is) just
the perfect end point for a lot of
recreational events because we’ve
got the right infrastructure and
community support for these
types of events,” said Donovan.
“People really get behind
them.”
NBRA member Brian
Donovan said the association
worked with sponsors and is
pleased the event has finally
been moved back to its original
location.
“We put a lot of work into
that,” he said.
Donovan said it was great to
see the NBRA involved with
advocating for the event to be
moved. He said the organisers
were also committed to restoring
it.
“The next step is making
sure we can work together and
support it.”
• Entries are available
online and cost $35 for an
adult (12+ years), $20 for
children (aged 5-11). Infants
(0-4) are free.
In Brief
NEW RESIDENTS’
ASSOCIATION CHAIR
The New Brighton Residents’
Association is set to appoint
a new chairperson at its next
meeting in February. The new
chairperson will replace former
chairwoman and Coastal Ward
city councillor Celeste Donovan.
The association will also discuss
ideas to make the role more
manageable.
TOILETS TO BE
LOCKED AT NIGHT
Complaints about people being
abused and threatened at the
Rawhiti Domain toilet block has
led to the toilets being locked at
night. The toilet block near the
St John Training Centre will be
open from 5.30am to 7.30pm
over summer and until 5.30pm
in winter. Coastal-Burwood
Community Board member
Jo Zervos said the night-time
closure will “limit that kind of
behaviour and look after the
public.”
Youth worker
joins bike
repair project
• By Emily Moorhouse
FUNDING FROM the city
council has meant a group that
restores bikes for the community
will be able to bring a youth
worker on board.
The Aranui Bike Fixup project
will be welcoming a youth worker
to the team to help out with mentoring
and building relationships
with youth.
Project founder Steven Muir
said this will allow for more opportunities
to grow the project
and plan for more activities.
“We’ve really struggled for
people to participate on a regular
basis so having the youth worker
as a regular person will be a big
benefit in terms of what we can
do,” he said.
The project will receive $10,000
of funding from the city council
for taking community action to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions
and live more sustainably.
Muir said the funding has
also helped with a new holiday
programme starting next week
from Monday to Friday. It has 20
kids lined up already and includes
teaching maintenance skills,
learning mountain biking and
BMX riding skills, and a variety
of day trips to adventure parks
and biking tracks.
The programme is free except
for a deposit that will be refunded
once the week has concluded.
‘In it for life’ – surf lifesaving tagline
• From page 1
During 2018 she tried her hand
at a few roles, gaining patrol
captain and surf official qualifications
as well as becoming a
lifeguard instructor when the
club needed one.
She noticed the club was
stretched and didn’t have enough
people to get lifeguards qualified
so she was more than happy to
fill the gap.
“For me it just became a nobrainer
because there were these
juniors coming through who
were so excited about wanting
to become a lifeguard so I guess
I just showed some interest in
wanting to do that,” she said.
Kirsty proved successful in her
position as an instructor, helping
more than 20 lifeguards qualify
before taking up boarding and
becoming the junior board
coach.
At the beginning of the 2018/19
summer season she moved on
to the role of junior surf coordinator,
a role that she said was
pretty big but very fulfilling.
And if that wasn’t enough,
Kirsty also became a patrol
captain for one of the five patrol
groups at the club.
“I didn’t do it alone, but it was
my job to run and oversee the
whole junior programme,” she
said.
“I’m definitely not the only one
who gives up a lot of time. There
are people out there just like me.”
While she said it was a team
effort to run a patrol group, each
lifeguard was responsible for
themselves.
“At the end of the day, every
single lifeguard no matter what
age or experience are still trained
to spot a person in trouble and to
be able to rescue and resuscitate
RECOGNITION:
Life Saving New
Zealand Southern
Region Awards of
Excellence.
if necessary.”
In 2019 Kirsty took up surf row
boating, a skill that she said took
a bit of getting the hang of.
“I’ll love my crew forever for
being so patient and tolerant,”
she said.
That was the same crew that
went on to compete in the 2020
Surf Life Saving Nationals in
Gisborne, medalling in masters,
and making semis and finals for
the short and long courses.
“I think we surprised a lot of
people,” Kirsty said.
“Out of 11 crews we were the
only one from the South Island.”
Throughout her time with the
club she has won district instructor
of the year award in 2020
and volunteer of the year award
in 2021 but for her it was never
about prizes.
“I’ve never done anything
I’ve done to gain recognition or
awards,” she said.
“I’ve only done it to gain competence.”
Kirsty’s favourite part of the
job was seeing people achieve
their goals and overcome obstacles.
“You might have a seven-yearold
who at the start of the summer
was way too scared to put
their head under or even go out
past ankle depth and here they
are diving under waves quite
happily, I mean that’s massive.”
Kirsty said she feels very lucky
to be part of such a great crew
and even when they’re all tired
and a bit overstretched it’s reassuring
to know that they’ve got
each other’s backs.
“The tagline that goes with surf
lifesaving is ‘in it for life’ well I
may have started late, but the
phrase is so true. I’ve joined an
amazing crew. “
In 2022, parents and caregivers will
be able to get their 5 to 11-year-olds
immunised against COVID-19
Some tamariki get very ill from catching
COVID-19 and immunisation is one of
the best ways to protect them.
Immunisation is an important way we keep tamariki safe,
like being sun smart or wearing a seatbelt.
It protects your tamariki from many serious diseases
and stops disease spreading within your whānau and the
community. In Aotearoa, tamariki get free vaccinations
against 12 diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis),
measles and polio.
Safety of the COVID-19 vaccine
The child (paediatric) Pfizer vaccine has gone through
the same rigorous approval process as other routine
childhood immunisations. No clinical trials were skipped
and no corners were cut in the testing of its safety.
The Pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds has been through
clinical trials with children in this age group. In general,
the side effects that were reported were mild, didn’t last
long, and were similar to side effects from other routine
immunisations.
BEAUTIFUL: Community pride garden awards judge
Ron Andrew and his wife Glyn.
A NEAT garden that stands
out from the rest is a winning
formula when it comes to
the community pride garden
awards.
The awards, which are being
held for the 32nd year in a row,
aim to celebrate and recognise
beautiful gardens.
Christchurch Beautifying
Association president Ron
Andrew is one of 20 judges
who will be making the rounds
through neighbourhoods from
Saturday in search of the best
looking gardens visible from the
street.
Andrew said one of the main
things the judges look for is
community pride.
He said a lot of people get
involved in gardening each year,
particularly the elderly and the
effort they put in is amazing.
Andrew also said the benefits
of gardening make the hard
work worthwhile.
“It’s healthy, it gets rid of
stress, it’s enjoyable and the end
results are rewarding . . . it’s
the most popular past time of
anything.”
Partnering with the city
council, community boards and
the Christchurch Beautifying
Association, the awards aim
to encourage civic pride and
recognise people who help
maintain Christchurch’s
reputation as the Garden City.
“Many people in our
communities put time and effort
into their gardens each week,
planting, mulching, weeding
and mowing,” said city council
head of community support,
John Filsell.
“We also have commercial
property owners who go the
extra mile with their public
gardens.
“It really makes a difference
to how our streets look and
how people feel about their
community so we want to
recognise that hard work
through these awards.”
Volunteer judges from the
association will be judging the
gardens from January 15 to
February 6.
Last year 682 awards were
given out for outstanding
gardens.
The gardens will be
judged on the amount of
effort put into creating and
maintaining it, overall tidiness
and the impact of the garden on
the street.
Gardeners that meet these
standards will receive a prize
card in their mailbox, with all
gardens visible from the street
being eligible, both residential
and commercial.
Six community boards
are involved in the awards:
Coastal-Burwood, Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood,
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton,
Linwood-Central-Heathcote,
Papanui-Innes and Spreydon-
Cashmere.
Any garden within these areas
and visible from the street is
eligible for an award.
