Thursday January 13 2022 The Star • By Anna Leask THE POLICE investigation into the non-accidental death of a three-month-old baby in Wainoni continues – and they say it may be “some time” before further information can be released. The baby was admitted to Christchurch Hospital on Close call as nail boards pose hidden danger • By Susan Sandys SHARP NAIL boards were found partially submerged under shingle in a stream at a popular walking spot near the Waimakariri River. James Owen was walking his friend’s two dogs at a ford at the end of Intake Rd on Sunday morning when he scraped his toe on “something sharp” after taking off his sandals and following the dogs along the water’s edge. He investigated, and then pulled up a wooden board with several long nails in it. The board had been on the bottom with the sharp ends of the nails pointing upwards. Nearby he found a similar board. He was shocked at the find, and grateful the dogs had not stood on them. He also felt lucky that his own foot had missed pressing down on the sharp nail by millimetres. “If I had stood on that with force that nail was going into my foot,” he said. Owen immediately removed the boards, fearing others visiting the area could stand on them. He said it appeared they may have been deliberately submerged to puncture the tyres December 31 with serious injuries. Police confirmed the infant had died on January 2. A homicide investigation is under way. To date no one has been charged in relation to the death. A police spokesperson said the name of the baby would not be released at this stage. As for the homicide of four-wheel-drive vehicles or quad bikes. However, they were an obvious risk to people and pets at the spot, which is regularly visited by walkers, picnickers and cyclists. “Imagine if a child had stood on it, because it’s a popular spot.” Owen posted about his find on the West Melton Community Page on Facebook. Members were appalled, calling the act nasty and sick, and feared what would happen to a child if they stood on one of the nails. Owen said he reported it to the police. Senior Sergeant Anna Lloyd said the incident was concerning. Police had advised Sicon, which undertook river maintenance. There had not been any previous incidents reported. “Police want to know about any further occurrences of this occurring,” she said. NASTY: James Owen narrowly avoided injury when his toe scraped up against one of these nails, in a wooden board submerged at the side of a Waimakariri River stream. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Baby homicide inquiry could take time investigation she said: “An update is unlikely for some time.” “Investigations are ongoing, however, and when we are in a position to provide any update . . . we will do so proactively.” Police also called for anyone with information to come forward. They said a number of witnesses had been spoken to in relation to the death and had provided critical information to investigators. However, within days police had finished at the scene. – NZ Herald NEWS 3 in brief Okains Bay Waitangi Day event cancelled Canterbury’s traditional Waitangi Day commemorations at Okains Bay have been cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns. The cancellation is part of a wider decision by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu to cancel all of its planned Waitangi Day events in 2022. Waitangi Day is marked on February 6. A commemoration has been held at the Okains Bay Museum, since 1977. The event normally attracts about 2000 people. Impact of sea level rise survey The city council has created a survey for the Lyttelton Harbour and Port Levy area communities it hopes will help inform long-term planning as part of the council’s Coastal Hazards Adaptation Planning programme. Low-lying inland and coastal communities will be increasingly impacted by intense storm events and long-term sea level rise, leading to more frequent and severe coastal flooding, coastal erosion, and rising groundwater. The focus area of the project is between Lyttelton and Port Levy. The survey aims to help understand the risk tolerance of communities in the event of prolonged loss of road access due to the impacts of sea level rise. Concert and family festival announced A free family festival and a concert headlined by local artists will be held at Victoria Square on March 12 and 13. The concert will be held on Saturday evening with the family-orientated festival beginning at noon the next day. Both events will require vaccine passes for people aged 12 and over.
