Rev. DavidNewhartTHE CHAPLAIN’S STUDY“Joseph went to be registered in Bethlehem with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was withchild. Mary gave birth to her firstborn and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.” Luke 2:5-7It must be almost twenty years ago that I first came across an interesting piece of advertising writtenby a committed Christian, perhaps you also saw the same billboard. This billboard showed a picture ofjolly ole St. Nicholas and alongside of it was a picture of Jesus. The headline above the two pictures read,“Whose birthday is it anyway?” It was a very simple yet striking way of getting across the point. I haveheard children answer the question, “Whose birthday is it?” with “Santa Claus.” Not often but every oncein a while, it happens.Every Christmas, pastors rail against the continued commercialism of Christmas by the secular society.Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when so many merchants begin to make more money than therest of the entire fiscal year. Black Friday is the day they either make or break their financial year. It is thetime when people seriously begin to buy their gifts for Christmas. I have no problem with merchants making a living at selling gifts, even selling gifts for Christmas. I have overcome my urge to rail against that any longer, as it is like blowing in the wind. You willnot read that in this letter.I will take umbrage with the fact that so many Christians have allowed themselves to be so taken up in the whole idea of giftgiving that they forget what the season is really meant to commemorate. This is the birth of the Son of God, Emmanuel, “God WithUs.” When buying gifts and arranging parties and running from one so called “Christmas party” to another so consumes your life, then you have lost your sight on the goal, celebrating Jesus as God’s gift to us.Our gifts could never compare to what God has already given to us, so we need not try, however we should be ever mindful of theneeds of others. Remember that while gift giving to family and friends is certainly part of this season, there is also a remembranceof the gifts we should be returning to God for the gift of his only begotten Son.The season of Advent is here to be a reminder to us, as well as a guide through the secular world that so easily carries us awayto its whims and wiles. Take the time to worship and celebrate with us here at Trinity and prepare yourself. Prepare yourself for thetrue meaning of Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel. God’s only Son is born to be our Savior.CEREMONIALSaturday December 11, 2021At theRajah Shrine ComplexRegistration of Candidates8:30-9:30 AMCeremonial Program StartsAt 9:45 AMClosed Ceremonial for Shriners and NewCandidates OnlyDress for Ceremonial will be coat, tie, fez, and your 2021 Rajah ShrineDues card.Independently Owned and OperatedMatt Murrell, Store ManagerRED WING SHOE STORE2350 LINCOLN HWY EAST, SUITE 860 LANCASTER, PA 17602In Mill Creek Square between the two large outlet centersNext to Red Robin in front of Kohl’s along the highwaywww.redwingshoes.com Phone: 717-869-5147Email: rwss591@redwingshoes.comCheck out our Facebook Page under Red Wing Store, LancasterHandcrafted Leather Footwear & Accessories.
