With lots of indoordining offerings having been closedfor many of the last several months,many restaurants relied solely on takeoutand delivery orders–and even when theywere open to a limited capacity, it wasvery challenging to make a profit.Thankfully, restaurants in our area areopen and ready to see you! But if you’renot ready to venture back out into therestaurant scene, order takeout. One localrestaurant owner told us that, aside fromcoming in, that’s the absolute best thingyou can do to help. But never underestimatetheir need for our support. It not onlyexhibits compassion, it, mostimportantly, exhibits hope.In the coming months, Hometown Madisonwill highlight locally owned restaurants ina new feature we call Neighborhood Eats.Please support this community of businesses.It will take all of us doing our part to makesure we all not only survive–but thrive.PIZZA SHACKMore Than JustPizzaSusan MarquezLike many teenagers, Ryan Patrickgot a job right out of high school tomake extra money. In 2003, he graduated fromMadison Central High School and went to work at Stan’s Pizza with a friendof his. “It was in the old Little Cesar’s location on Highway 51 in Madison,”Ryan recalls. He worked at the pizza restaurant for two years while he attendedHolmes Community College. But for Ryan, it became more than just a job.He learned some valuable lessons about making pizza, and about runninga pizza business.Ryan, along with a business partner, opened his take on a pizza shoparound 2006 on North State Street in Jackson. Pizza Shack became aninstant hit. “I wanted to put my own spin on how pizzas were made,” he says.“I realized that people were always asking for extra cheese or extra pepperoni,so we just went ahead and did that on all our pizzas. I also noticed that whenpeople ate pizza, they left the crust, so we extended our toppings all the wayto the edge. We focused on using the freshest ingredients, which made ourpizzas unique.”When Ryan and his business partner went separate ways, Ryanreturned to his Madison roots and opened a Pizza Shack location onGarden Park Drive in Madison in 2015. “We have seen the city of Madisongrow up around us,” he says.
