them all to give to the orchestra members for Christmas.”Each year a legacy scholarship is awarded to a student whohas participated in Sub Debs for all three years. “It is a$500 scholarship to thank them for their work on behalfof the MSO,” says Karen. The scholarship is awarded at theSub Deb ball.The ball, which began in 1967, is the highlight of thesocial season for the Sub Deb participants. “Sub Deb is notabout the ball, it’s about the volunteer efforts put forth allyear,” says Karen. “The ball is their reward.” Those attendingthe ball wear formal gowns and their escorts wear tuxedos.This year’s ball will take place on April 1. Another big eventfor the girls is the annual Mother-Daughter Tea. The girlsassist with plans for the special event.Covid has affected the Sub Deb program, andadjustments have been made to help prevent the spreadof the virus. “All of our events this year have been heldoutdoors,” says Karen, “We usually do our E&T trainingsin the courtyard of Highland Village.
