Thursday January 27 2022 The Star OUR BUSIEST, highest, longest and newest streets revealed – and more. There are almost 4000 roads that are owned by the city council – 3938 to be exact. Combined, they stretch for 2439km. That’s greater than the distance from Cape Reinga to Bluff (which is a mere 2058km). Alphabetically speaking, the first street is Abberley Cres and the last street is Zinnia Way. As well as the public roads there are a number of private right-of-ways that the public are allowed to use, but are not legal roads. Here’s a list of fun facts about our streets, from the widest to the shortest, to the newest, busiest and narrowest. Widest The widest single carriageway road in Christchurch is Whitmore St which is 25m wide. However, Linwood Ave is the widest dual carriageway at 45m. This includes the cycleway and the planted central median. Narrowest At the other end of the scale is Wells Back Rd off Charlton Rd on Banks Peninsula – it’s a petite 2.5m wide. Busiest Christchurch’s busiest street for foot traffic is Cashel Mall. It sees an average 8000–9000 pedestrians per day. For vehicle traffic Moorhouse Ave is the busiest, with an average of 55,000 vehicles a day. Longest Our longest road is Summit Rd, which runs from the top of Evans Pass through to Gebbies Pass – a distance of 28km. Shortest Alcester St off Durham St at the South City Mall entrance clocks in as our shortest legal road at just 35m long. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Bus timetables return to normal METRO BUS services will return to their regular timetables from Monday, just in time for schools starting back, after majority of bus service timetables were changed due to a nationwide driver shortage. The shortage affected an eight-week period where routes across Christchurch ran to a Saturday timetable. Now Environment Canterbury is pleased to see the timetables return to their normal schedules. General manager of public transport Stewart Gibbon said he would like to thank customers for their understanding and patience during this “challenging time”. “While the change to a Saturday schedule was necessary to reduce the number of cancellations and give customers more certainty, we understand the disruption that this has caused for many customers,” he said. “We would also like to thank our operator, who we have been working closely with over the past two months, for their commitment and focus to resume normal services as quickly as possible.” Gibbon said while they are uncertain what the future will bring with the country Record-holding roads revealed LONGEST: A small section of Summit Rd remains closed to vehicles due to earthquake damage. NEWS 3 in brief Tamaki’s coalition bill not paid The city council is considering its next move after a bill to cover traffic management at anti-government protests last year was not settled by the payment deadline. The Freedoms and Rights Coalition, founded by Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki, was sent an invoice for $14,117.47 for costs associated with three gatherings in Cranmer Square and elsewhere in the city in November and December. Payment was due by last Thursday but the bill remained unpaid yesterday. Legal action is now a possibility. “We are discussing the next steps. The bill can be recovered under the district court jurisdiction, as with all debts owed to council,” said infrastructure, planning and regulatory services general manager Jane Davis. Long wait for trial continues A man arrested more than four years ago has been refused release on electronically monitored bail again in the district court, as he waits in custody for his trial – one of the longest waits in the criminal justice system at present. A tentative date has been set for August for the man’s trial on 15 charges, but his counsel told his latest bail hearing that no firm date had been set. After Judge Mark Callaghan refused bail, the man was remanded for pre-trial arguments in March.
