My Kaywa QR-Code w.valuecarswarehouse.co.nz Last week’s article Big brother is watching you highlights how CCTV is a tool for police to help solve crimes. It also poses how a surveillance society has “. . . a chilling effect on their (people’s) freedom to live their lives.’’ Some say only criminals have something to fear from cameras, yet I look at “supersurveilled London’’ with all their cameras, they are unable to prevent crime and make London safe. Governments using facial recognition cameras with a social credit system, control their citizen’s every move. Some people question if we are taking the first steps towards a social credit system through having our steps tracked through bluetooth, QR codes and vaccine passes. Is this is a conspiracy theory? I only know that I feel a little less free every time I scan in. – D Downward, Bryndwr Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Drownings I am totally saddened by the 35 drownings over the holiday period. I agree with Alan Roberts letter (The Star, January 20), that removal of teaching swimming in our primary schools, plus removal of school swimming pools,by the fifth Labour Government has to be one of the dumbest of political decisions for our country. Learning to swim is an essential ‘life skill’ for all New Zealanders, and as such is just as important in life as is teaching reading and writing at school . . . all three of which are key survival skills. It would be great to again see full governmental support for the teaching of swimming in our primary schools. My logic is this has to be an essential survival skill for all young New Zealanders. – A White, Wigram Vaccinations If I was going to hospital, unlike D Downward I would want the staff to be fully vaxed. If it was the case that things got so bad that Covid-positive nurses had to work the fact they were vaccinated would mean they were not as sick as the unvaxed. There are only 35 GP doctors who are unvaccinated and about two per cent of nurses showing most in the medical profession are in support of vaccinations. Personal freedom must be guarded but it should not be above personal responsibility to support the most vulnerable . – Trevor Sennitt, Avonhead We want to hear your views on the issues affecting life in Canterbury Send emails to: barry@starmedia.kiwi LETTERS 23 CCTV is more than a tool to solve crime Letters may be edited or rejected at Star Media’s discretion.
