North Canterbury economy impacted at Red
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The North Canterbury economy
will take ahit from the Covid19
Red traffic light setting, with a
myriad of events cancelled
across the region as omicron
makesits presence felt in New
Zealand.
Heather Warwick chief
executive of EnterpriseNorth
Canterbury, the regions
economic and development
agency, saysthe impact of the
loss of eventswill be
‘‘devastating’’ for all event
organisers, and North
Canterbury.
Events playamajor roleinthe
region bringing visitor spend,
and enjoymentand pride for
residents, shesays.
‘‘They have been on edge
waiting for any changeintraffic
light levels,and now it has
happened. Worst of all, it has
happened at the heightofevent
season.’’
Agricultural and Pastoral
shows, festivals, rallies and
sports events tumbled one after
another this week, because
organisers could notsee away
through the red tape to runtheir
events. Withnoend in sight for a
setting change, they were left
withfew options but to cancel or
postpone.All wouldhave brought
in valuable dollarsto
communities, and the region,as
visitors andlocals,starved of
events, welcomedthe
opportunity to enjoy country
hospitalityand entertainment.
All North Canterbury A&P
shows have been cancelled. The
Kaikoura,Cheviot,Hawarden,
Oxfordand Amuri A&P
committees were leftwith no
choicebut to abandon plans for
the traditionalannual gatherings
showcasing their districts. But
organiserscould not finda
feasible, or economic way of
staging an event for their
communitiesand visitors with
just 100 people allowedthrough
the gates.
At Orange, the shows may have
been possible, but aheavy weight
would have fallen on the
shoulders of volunteers charged
with verifying vaccine passes at
entrances.
OAS multimillion upgrade soon
By ADAM BURNS
LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER
Long awaited multimillion dollar
upgrades to OxfordArea School may
finally be set in motionafter the
prospect of aburgeoning school roll
forced arethink.
PrincipalMike Hart said
construction on the project,whichwas
firstconfirmed fouryears ago by the
Ministry of Education, was earmarked
for the end of 2022,although this was a
‘‘best case scenario’’.
The $10 million redevelopment
includes thereplacement of 11
prefabricated classrooms, anew
library and administrationblockand
upgrades to other facilities.
The past few years, following the
2018 announcement by Minister of
Education Chris Hipkins, have been
marked by rebuild scopes,
development of an education brief and
the completion of along term master
plan lastyear.
It was previously hoped thatthe
construction would begin early this
year.
However, the end of 2022 is now
considered more realistic.
Mr Hart sayscatering to the
potentialgrowth of pupils duringthe
planning phase had possibly slowed
the project.
‘‘A positiveprojection of the school
From Page 1
It is the second time in five years the
Kaikoura A&P show has been cancelled —
once due to the 2016 earthquakeand once
because of the pandemic.
Secretary Laura Page says it was a
difficult decision.
‘‘We’vegone back and forth for weeks,
but we just couldn’t see away to run it
safely.’’
‘‘It’sgutting for us becausewebring
peopleinto the area, which our businesses
so badlyneed.’’
It is also the secondtime the Oxford
show has been cancelled due to the
pandemic.
Show presidentLeititia Schroeder says
it is ‘‘gutting’’ for the committee,
exhibitors,community, and local
businessesthat the show has had to be
cancelled,but the committee could not
find an economicway of runningthe
annualeventwith alimit of 100 spectators.
The committee wants to thank its loyal
sponsors, and the many volunteerswho
support to the show.
It was now focused on looking forward to
2023.
The Hanmer SpringsPools and Spa,
however, is bringing some welcome news
for people wanting to chill out and enjoy
getting away from home.
The complex will remain open from
rollmade us think about the size and
perhapshaving something abit bigger
thanweoriginally thought,’’ he says.
The predicted school roll for 2022 is
545,but the master plan
accommodates 800pupils.
Detailed design is now the focus for
school leaders as headway is sought on
the project.
‘‘About threequarters of the year
willbespent on (detailed design),’’ Mr
Hartsays.
He said he was hopefulofthe build
getting underway before the end of
the year.
‘‘Whether it is some demolition
taking place becausewehave to
remove some buildingstocreatethe
space,’’MrHart says.
‘‘Hopefully someconstruction will
takeplace by the endofthis year.
‘‘There's lotsoffactors that
However, mostofthe school's
existing infrastructure dated back to
the site’s previous incarnation.
Mr Hart agreessome of the buildings
are now outofdate.
‘‘They're really old and costour
school alot of money to updatethem,
and to keep them as freshaswecan,’’
Mr Hart says.
10am to 7pm. Vaccine passes are required,
along with scanningin, social distancing
and masks indoors.
However, it may have to close up shop if
case numbers and hospitalisations grow in
Canterbury.
At this stage there no bookingsare
required, but check the website as this
may change for certain days.
The inaugural Waimakariri Country
Music Festival, due to be held from
February 11 to 13 at the Rangiora
Showgrounds, is another victim.
The organisers have now turned their
attention to bringing the event to Rangiora
next February.
All TogetherKaiapoi has cancelled its
WaitangiDay FamilyCelebration, but coordinatorLinda
Dunbar says the Kaiapoi
Garden Competitionjudging will go ahead
tomorrow(Friday, January 28) as planned.
The Waitangi Day race meeting at
Rangiora, hosted by the Amberley Trotting
Club, has also had the brakes put on its
meeting due to the cost of runninga
meeting with alimit on spectators to help
pay the bills.
North Canterburyathletes training for
the twoday CoasttoCoast, held annually
the second week of the school holidays.
Peoplewho have alreadybought tickets
will have them transferred over to the new
Big Brothers and Sisters programme
disappointing to have to postpone the
event, ‘‘but obviously we want to followthe
Rescue time ... The group at work capturing the trapped tuna/eels for relocation.
Slipperyrescue fromabasin
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Wrestling eels and chasing whitebait is
all in adays work for Makarini Rupene.
Environment Canterbury’s northern
Pou Matai Ko (cultural land
management advisor), led the recent
relocation of about 20 tuna/eels, and
some whitebait trapped in aKaiapoi
subdivision retention basin after heavy
rain.
The rescue of the longfin and shortfin
eels, some of which are believed to up to
40 yearsold, came after some were
found dead in the basin at anew housing
development, after creeks overflowed
and spilled in to it during the heavy rain.
Mr Rupene says the remainder would
have also died as the retention pond
dried up, requiring him and ECan
volunteers to intervene.
The group used large, specialised nets
to sweep the basin, capturing any
stranded ka ika (fish). They were
transferred to buckets, carried to the
edge of the Kaiapoi River, and set free.
It was slippery work at times, with
some of the eels jumping out of the net
or bucket, requiring abit of wrestling to
get them back in.
Four of the six whitebait species in
Aotearoa New Zealand are classified as
either threatened or at risk. The longfin
eel is also at risk.
Mr Rupene says moving them back to
their proper habitat was anobrainer, as
they would not have stood achance if the
had been left in the retention basin.
‘‘It was important for us to step in and
relocate them. It was because of human
activity that they ended up there, so we
have aresponsibility to help them out,’’
he says.
‘‘Saving these taonga means we
continue to support and protect them,
sustaining mahinga kai and biodiversity
values into the future for our children,
and their children too.’’
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Mr Rupene says land development
and land use change of old swamps,
streams or wetlands, can be problematic
for aquatic life.
‘‘The waterways can end up being
diverted or pushed back under
springhead streams, disrupting the flow
and connectivity of the species, ‘‘ Mr
Rupene says..
‘‘It’s crucial that developers
understand what's underground, which
springs are about and which waterways
have been there.
‘‘That can include putting up fish
screens or changing the way the land is
developed, perhaps including
constructed wetlands.’’
He warns that until preventive action
is taken at sites such as in Kaiapoi, the
problem may keep happening.
Developers can get information or
advice by contacting the region’s Pou
Matai Ko (cultural land management
advisor). Call 0800324636.
Back to School Safety
It’s back to school time! Help keep each other
safe byfollowing some simple tips:
• Children and young people
get distracted and may
forget to look for traffic –
be alert
• Stop if aschool patrol sign
is extended –nomatter
which side it’s on
• Children often don’t
accurately judge the speed
and distance of cars –
slow down
• Either way it’s 20k –this is the legal speed when passing a
Age is no barrier to Dynamic Vanessa in the grading stakes
By TIM CRONSHAW
ACanterbury cow has earned an excellent
grading for the sixth time at agrand old
age.
The 20yearoldHolsteinFriesian,
Belbrook DynamicVanessa, is believed to
be the only cow to have achieved asixth
EX classification in the country.
OwnedbyJohn and Robbie Wakelin of
Belbrook Holsteins, in Rangiora,Vanessa
was the only HolsteinFriesian to get an
EX5 in 2019.
Robbie Wakelinsaid her longevityand
consistent calving had contributed more
thananythingelse.
‘‘She’s onlystartedtolook older
recently. She’s agood old cow.She runs
through the herd, she’scarefree, and at 19
she’s still going strong.’’
Eachyear,HolsteinFriesian New
Zealand members submittheirregistered
inmilk heifers and cowsfor classification.
The system aims to improve the breed’s
overall standard by recognising each cow’s
strengthsand weaknesses.
All cowsclassified are alsoscoredfor
nonproductiontraits.
To achieve an excellentgrading, acow
must have calved at least threetimes.
Born in 2001, Vanessa had come from a
long line of Canterburycentred genetics,
Mr Wakelin said.
‘‘Her sire,Bellview WM Dynamic, was
bred by Johnand I.
‘‘He was an outstanding bull, producing
17 daughters who classified excellent.’’
Vanessa’s dam was Belbrook LP Valda.
The cow got herfirst excellent mark in
2009,with her milkproduction peaking at
513kgofmilk solids in 2013. She had
produced13calvesduring 15 lactations in
her lifetime, and two of her daughters
have classifiedexcellent twice.
Holstein Friesian New Zealand
president DougCourtman saidthe
achievement was evidence of the longevity
of the breed, and the breeding skills of
families such as the Wakelins. Mr Wakelin
said they had never shied awayfrom
breedingwith older cows,and longevity
was atrait his father bred for specifically.
Positive despite the threat of Omicron
Kaikoura tourism operators are feeling
positive, amid the uncertainty of Covid
19.
Destination Kaikoura chairperson
Lynette Buurman says operators
enjoyed aChristmas boost, as the
Omicron variant threatens to cause
disruption.
‘‘It’s not crazy busy, but we had agreat
peak holiday period,’’ she says. ‘‘It has
quietened off now to just ticking along,
but we expected that.’’
While New Zealand has been moved
into the red traffic light, Mrs Buurman
says operators will have taken some
relief from last week’s government
announcement, where it all but ruled
out lockdowns and regional borders.
Kaikoura’s tourism operators are able
to continue operating under the red
traffic light under the existing rules.
‘‘For us it’s about reducing the loading
on our vehicles, which is no biggie
because we have plenty of vehicles,
encouraging social distancing and it will
involve extra cleaning,’’ says Mrs
Buurman, who is also Encounter
Kaikoura business manager.
The big unknown is whether people
will be willing to travel with Omicron
looming.
‘‘This is new ground for all of us,’’ she
says.
‘‘The vaccine pass gives us the
opportunity to keep the doors open, but
the big question is how many people
realistically will be travelling around
when it’s red.
‘‘It’s about learning to live with the
risk of sickness, but as long as people
are careful and take precautions they
can still travel.’’
Being able to hire enough staff
remains the biggest challenging.
‘‘Staffing is an ongoing challenge and
we really do need to get abit more
support.’’
Kaikoura Deputy Mayor Julie Howden
wonders if domestic tourism has lost its
‘‘oomph’’.
She says Kaikoura, like other parts of
New Zealand, received alarge influx of
visitors following the first Covid19
lockdown in 2020. ‘‘Kiwis have done
their domestic tourism and they seem to
be more hesitant to travel now.’’
But she says her bed and breakfast did
welcome several visitors from Auckland
and Wellington keen for an escape
during the Christmas holiday period.
‘‘We always get the Christmas rush,
but the operators are saying it’s like the
lights have gone out once everyone went
back to work,’’ Mrs Howden says.
Kaikoura’s White Morph Motor Inn
experienced abusy three weeks, but has
plenty of vacancies now that the
Christmas rush is over.
With the Kaikoura A&P Show
cancelled next month, Mrs Buurman
says the next busy period is likely to be
Easter and the April school holidays.
Out on the water ... Kaikoura tourism
operators are planning to keep their doors
open under the red traffic light Covid19
framework.
Food on the mind after record breaking run
By SHELLEYTOPP
On the last leg of her recordbreaking
Ultimate Challenge
Run NZ, Kaiapoi endurance
athlete Emma Timmis picked
up the pace to the finish line.
Even though every part of her
body was sore, after running
100km for 20 days, and she had
huge blisters on the little toe
and ball of her right foot, the
looming finish line proved a
powerful incentive.
She ran 133km that day
because ‘‘I just wanted to stop.’’
Then, after crossing the
finish line she wanted food.
After being restricted to a
carefully planned caloriedense
diet, including cheese,
peanut butter, yoghurt, nuts,
seeds and high energy drinks,
during her run, Emma had a
huge appetite for more
substantial meals of regular
food.
‘‘I wanted to eat constantly,’’
she says.
Emma, who was born in
England, began the 2100km run
at Cape Reinga on December 18
and finished at Bluff’s Stirling
Point at around 11pm on
January 7.
Her goal was to complete the
run in 21 days, set anew world
record and raise funds for two
mental health charities
Youthline in New Zealand and
Young Minds in the United
Kingdom.
It was an ambitious goal, but
she smashed it, running the
2100km in 20 days, 17 hours and
17 minutes, beating the
previous record of 35 days and
27 minutes, set by Welsh woman
Menna Evans in 2020.
In 2014 Emma ran across
Africa completing 3974km from
Namibia to Mozambique in 89
days, but says the New Zealand
challenge was tougher.
‘‘The African race was amuch
longer race, but Iwas only
running 50 kilometres aday,’’
she says.
The New Zealand run was
‘‘way more intense’’ because
the route on State Highway 1
had busy traffic and constant
noise.
Since finishing her recordbreaking
New Zealand run,
Emma’s focus has been rest.
She plans to eventually write
achildren’s book about the
challenge and is working to
increase the awareness of her
run to raise more money for
Youthline and Young Minds
UK.
So far $24,000 has been raised
for Youthline and $NZ6000 for
Young Minds UK.
Another priority is to prepare
the documentation required by
the Guinness Book of Records to
authenticate her world record.
Emma spent between 12 and
14 hours running daily during
the challenge and was
supported by many Kiwis along
the route, who were following
her progress.
She went through five pairs of
running shoes and she had to
wear alarger shoe size for the
South Island section because
15
recuperating at home after breaking the world record for running the length of New Zealand earlier this
month.
her feet were badly swollen.
She also had asupport team,
including her partner Tristan
Phipps, travelling in a
campervan, with her for the
run.
‘‘I couldn’t have done the run
without my sponsors and
support crew. They did
everything for me,’’ Emma says.
Tristan was cycling with
Emma during her run, but on
Christmas Day he was badly
injured after being knocked off
his bicycle by amotor vehicle.
He is still recovering from his
injuries in what was alow point
of the run. The high points were
finishing the run, raising funds
for the charities and receiving
support along the way.

NEWS
16 North Canterbury News, January 27, 2022
On the beat ... Senior constable Tony Maw chats to Rangiora patrol leader Chris Barker.
Patrols extra ‘eyes and ears’
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Community patrols continue to play an
important part in crime prevention in
North Canterbury.
Senior constable Tony Maw says
Community Patrols are valued partners
of the police, providing extra ‘‘eyes and
ears’’ in communities.
‘‘We really support their role, and
value the assistance they give us,’’ he
says.
Volunteers for patrols were always
being sought.
‘‘The more volunteers, the more
patrols we can put out there,’’ he says.
When patrols began, traditionally they
were out on Friday and Saturday nights.
But that had now changed, particularly
as more volunteers are available and the
North Canterbury areas continue to
grow.
‘‘It is about patrolling to demand. Quite
often crimes are happening in the early
hours of the morning, any day of the
week.
‘‘We need to be flexible, and work
patrols around the demand,’’ he says.
Constable Maw says Neighbourhood
Support was another valued partner of
the police, with neighbours looking out
for each other, taking notes of any
suspicious behaviour, and car number
plates, and calling police in atimely
manner to alert them to any activity that
was causing concern.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
‘‘Call 111 if it is happening now, and
that includes suspicious vehicles.
‘‘I am abig advocate of calling 111. Our
call takers are experienced people, and
can screen calls and maybe divert some
calls to the 105 nonemergency line.
‘‘We would much rather hear about it
(suspicious activity), at that time, rather
than have aburglar slip through the net.’’
Constable Maw says putting concerns
up on Facebook pages was great in
alerting the community to unusual
activity, but the police were also part of
the community and needed to be alerted
at the same time.
‘‘Don’t just put it on Facebook. Alert
the police.’’
Arecent raffle run by the Rangiora
Community Patrol to help fund
resources, had huge support from the
community.
Rangiora patrol leader Chris Barker
says the patrol was really grateful to the
community for its support. The raffle
prizes included petrol and Mitre 10
vouchers.
Dial 111 if something is happening
‘‘now’’, and 105 if it has already
happened. People can also file reports
online at: police.govt.nz/105support.
‘‘That includes anything down to minor
property damage or aperson acting
suspiciously,’’ Constable Maw says.
To express an interest in joining a
community patrol go to the Community
Patrols NZ website.
Families enjoying sun, surf and sand
By DAVID HILL
Waikuku Beach might lack the glamour
of Baywatch, but life guards have been
out in force this summer.
Week day patrols have been keeping an
eye on ‘‘wellbehaved’’ swimmers at the
Waikuku, Pegasus and Woodend
beaches, Surf Life Saving New Zealand
southern regional manager Stu Bryce
says.
‘‘It’s good to see so many families out
there together and enjoying themselves,’’
he says.
‘‘We’ve had people asking questions
and children listening to the life guards,
which is good because if people can
understand the surf better then they
know how to be safe when the life guards
aren’t around.’’
Ocean conditions have been good and,
aside from the usual ‘‘minor first aids
and afew assists’’, there have been no
issues to report.
‘‘People have been swimming between
the flags and looking after each other,’’
he says.
While there have been no major
incidents on the patrolled beaches in
North Canterbury, the life guards joined
the Coastguard in the search for a
missing swimmer who drowned on the
Waimakariri River last month.
‘‘It’s gutting. My thoughts go out to the
family,’’ Mr Bryce says.
Outside of patrolling the beaches, the
region’s surf life saving clubs have been
recognising the efforts of young life
guards.
Mr Bryce says Waikuku Beach is one of
the strongest clubs in the South Island,
with alarge family membership.
‘‘They have great numbers and they do
it really well with their family model,’’ he
says.
‘‘They have mums and dads out on
patrol with their kids and they have the
learn to swim classes which brings in the
younger ones.’’
Paid weekday patrols were in action
for four weeks at the Pegasus and
Woodend beaches, while at Waikuku
Beach the weekly patrols complete their
sixweek stint tomorrow (January 28).
Volunteer weekend patrols will
continue to operate at Waikuku Beach
until midMarch.
New sign adds character
Visitors dropping in to enjoy some sun at
Waikuku Beach are being greeted by a
new welcome sign.
The sign is the first of several welcome
signs commissioned by the Woodend
Sefton Community Board, chairperson
Shona Powell says.
‘‘It’s something the board decided a
few years ago that we wanted to work on
to give the local area some identity.
‘‘And it’s so people realise they are
coming into atown, so it prompts them to
slow down.
‘‘It’s something abit different. We
decided to do it ourselves as it gives the
community more input into it, rather
than just putting it on to the council.’’
The sign incorporates elements which
relate to Waikuku Beach, including the
ocean and local birdlife.
Next up is aWoodend Beach welcome
sign, followed by three signs for Woodend
itself.
WOODEND TO PEGASUS FEATURE
The North Canterbury News, January 27, 2022
Focus on community facilities
By DAVID HILL
Community facilities in Pegasus are high
on the radar for WoodendSefton
Community Board chairperson Shona
Powell in 2022.
She says progressing the Pegasus
Community Centre development and
exploring the possibilities of ayouth
space in the town are top priorities for
the board in the year ahead.
‘‘We want to make sure we make some
progress on the community centre
because it’s been promised and we need
to ensure that it happens,’’ Ms Powell
says.
Anew Pegasus Community Centre was
signalled in last year’s 2021/31
Waimakariri Long Term Plan, with
council staff given the goahead to
acquire land in Pegasus and Ravenswood
for the future development of community
facilities.
Asum of $4.5 million has been set aside
for the purchase of land and the
construction of a385 square metre
community centre in Pegasus, with work
expected to begin in 2024.
Afurther $4.3 million was set aside to
purchase land in Ravenswood, with the
council to consider building an 800
square metre facility in its next LTP
deliberations in 2024.
For now Pegasus has atemporary
community centre, which comprises two
leased shops in the town centre.
While council funding for ayouth
facility in Pegasus has been set aside for
several years, making progress has
proven to be achallenge, Ms Powell says.
‘‘It’s abit of achicken and egg situation
because we don’t know what the youth
want. Do we put it beside the community
centre or do we do something completely
different?
‘‘It’s definitely time that we started
listening to the youth, but sometimes you
ask them what they want and say skate
park, but for some young people skate
parks aren’t particularly engaging.’’
The Pegasus lake appears to be a
particular attraction for local youth, but
engaging with them is achallenge as they
leave the area for high school either in
Kaiapoi or in Christchurch.
New community facilities for the area
is essential to meet the demands of rapid
growth in Woodend, Ravenswood and
Pegasus, Ms Powell says.
Last year there were 214 consents
issued for new houses in Woodend
including Ravenswood, the highest for
any town in the district, and 147 for
Pegasus, out of atotal of 928.
In 2020 there were 319 consents issued
for new houses in Woodend, Ravenswood
and Pegasus.
Woodend and Pegasus both of
populations of around 4000 people.
‘‘It’s pretty amazing. It’s areally high
growth area, which means the planning
has to be happening now to cope with
that growth and that’s abig focus for the
board,’’ Ms Powell says.
Finding lasting solutions for State
Boom town ... Pegasus continues to grow.
PHOTOS: FILE
Time to deliver ... Shona Powell will be
making sure Mayor Dan Gordon and his
fellow councillors keep to their commitments
to build community facilities.
Highway 1issues, pedestrian safety,
cycle ways and algal blooms in Lake
Pegasus are also priorities as the board
looks to the future.
‘‘One of the challenges for us is that
Woodend, Ravenswood and Pegasus are
treated as separate entities and we don’t
really have adefined town centre like
Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Oxford.’’
Another concern is aperceived lack of
representation for Woodend,
Ravenswood, Pegasus and Pegasus
around the council table.
Last year’s Waimakariri District
Council representation review opted to
stick with the status quo, with four
councillors elected from across the
KaiapoiWoodend ward.
For now Kaiapoi has the larger
population, with 12,000 people, but Ms
Powell says it is up to residents to put
their hands up ahead of October’s local
body elections.
Astronomers move online
By DAVID HILL
The Oxford Observatory is moving
online as it looks to extend its
reach.
After the disruptions of the last
two years due to Covid19, the
observatory’s regular coursesare
now beingoffered via Zoom.
‘‘We havepeoplewho come from
all over the region, so getting to
Oxford eachweek can be a
challenge for some people,’’
Observatoryvolunteer Erik
Vermaatsays.
‘‘Because of Covid Iendeddoing
it on Zoom last year. Ihad areally
enthusiastic group for the whole
year and for some people it
worked betteronZoom thanatthe
observatory.’’
All lectureswill be recorded and
available online for course
participants in case aclass is
missed.
Enrolment is open for the first
course,‘‘exploring the solar
system’’, which starts on February
15.
The course explores the sun, the
planets, dwarf planets, moons,
asteroids,cometsand even
recently discovered extrasolar
visitors, Erik says.
‘‘Because there is so much to
choose from, each year this course
is different and we will makea
selection of contemporary topics.’’
Mars will feature along withthe
own moon and the
‘‘groundbreaking’’ Juno mission
around Jupiter.
In termtwo the course‘‘leaving
the solar system’’ will explore
space out to 7000 light years,
including the search for
exoplanets.
Don’t forget to look up ... Erik Vermaat’s astronomy classes are now
online.
PHOTO: FILE
The remaining courses are
‘‘exploringthe Milky Way’’ and
‘‘going deep’’, which attempts to
explore out to the edge of the
observable universe.
Volunteers are considering a
practical astronomy course at the
observatory during terms two and
three, while astrophotographyis
alsoapossibility.
Withthe James Webb Space
Telescope being launched on
Christmas Day, on amission to
lookout into deep space,
astronomy is likely to be in focus
thisyear, volunteer Raul Elias
Drago says.
After the excitementof
installing abrand new 12inch
telescope, just one open nightwas
heldlast year.
‘‘Hopefully we have agreatyear
coming up,’’Raul says.
‘‘Wehad such alet downwith
weather last year and then we had
lockdown.
‘‘But it has given us timefor
development, become familiar
with the new telescope and we’ve
done some maintenance and
upgrades.’’
The software with the 12inch
telescope is designed to identify
the ‘‘brightest targets’’onany
givendate. The operator simply
selects the objectand the targeting
software does the rest.
Raul says Uranus can be viewed
in the nightsky along with Mars
and Venus, whileJupiter and
Saturnwill be visible later in the
year.
Eventsare also being plannedto
coincide with OxfordArea
River bird safety in spotlight
Dog owners are being reminded to keep
their dogs under control to protect
braided river birds.
Last year’s collapse of ablackbilled
gull colony in the upper Waimakariri
River is asobering reminder of the
fragility of braided river birds,
Environment Canterbury (ECan) says.
The collapse is thought to have been
prompted by adog attack and
demonstrates the need to advocate for
and protect these birds and their habitat,
ECan says.
Around 25 species of native birds make
their home on the beds of braided rivers,
including the blackbilled gull, wrybill
(the only bird in the world with a
sideways beak), banded dotterel and the
blackfronted tern.
Many face arisk of decline and
sometimes extinction.
Species can quickly become
threatened if conservation management
reduces, or new threats arise.
ECan senior scientist Jean Jack says
each part of the river network has arole
in supporting birdlife and needs to be
respected and protected.
While the larger, alpine fed rivers
provide the most extensive habitat, the
smaller, hillfed rivers offer essential
alternative sites when the larger ones are
in flood.
Braided river birds and their eggs can
be very hard to see, which means
disturbance is amajor threat to them.
Often out in the open, the nests are
camouflaged among stones, so it’s
important to steer clear of known or
suspecting nesting areas.
If abird is swooping, circling, or calling
loudly, chances are there’s anest nearby.
ECan and DOC’s work to protect
braided river birds includes pest
trapping, weed control, camera
installation and public awareness
measures.
‘‘We can all do our bit by keeping dogs
under control, sticking to already formed
tracks, removing rubbish from rivers and
coastal areas, avoiding nesting sites,
obeying speed rules when jet boating,
and respecting signage that may be
present.’’ an ECan spokeperson says.
‘‘In the meantime, simply telling others
about these unique birds and why they
need protecting, is agreat start to
helping them survive and thrive for years
to come.’’
Community groups such as BRaid and
the Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group,
and volunteers such as filmmaker and
artist Gaylene Barnes, play acrucial role
in helping to protect bird species, ECan
says.
Youth keen toplayrole
amid Covid uncertainty
By DAVID HILL
Waimakariri’s youth leaders are keen
to play arole in their communityin
uncertain times.
Members of the WaimakaririYouth
Council and WaiYouthgathered at the
Woodend Christian CamponFridayfor
On the agenda was writing
submissions, recruitment and howto
engage with other young people and
the widercommunity.
The move to Covid19 red traffic light
restrictions will causearethink
around eventplanning, Waimakariri
DistrictCouncil youth development
facilitator Emily Belton says.
But she is optimistic the youth can
rise to theoccasion.
‘‘It’s an exciting time for youth
counciltohave avoice in the various
areasaround the district and not just
Rangiora,’’ she says.
‘‘There was some really positive stuff
out of the whole day.’’
The participantsidentified youth
spaces, connectivitytothe local
community, public transport, and
youth employment and training as
issuesthey are keen to engage in this
year, Ms Belton says.
Grant Stephens, fromthe council’s
greenspace team, joined in for a
session on youthspaces and council
parks.
Ms Belton saysthe youth provided
some ideas on how to engage with youth
in Pegasus, as the councillooks to
develop ayouthspace in the town.
She says the youth counciland
WaiYouth will supportthe Youth
Futures Careers Expo, planned in
June, as they looktohelp otheryoung
peopleinto training andlocal
employment.
In the meantime, Ms Belton says the
two groups willlook their first
meetings of the yearonline.
WaiYouth will lookatrunning
smaller events, ratherthan big events
like the All Night Party, as it looks to
complywith the traffic light
regulations.‘‘It’s somethingweare
going to have to live with over the
comingmonths and years, but we know
what red looks like and we can lookat
how we can work around that.’’
Protecting native taonga species
with predator control in Arthur’s Pass.
To protect orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka from local extinction in
Arthur’s Pass and Lake Sumner area the Department of Conservation (DOC),
Rangiora District intends to carry out predator control over approximately 53,765
hectares of public conservation land. (Refer to the application area on map)
Description of the area
The Arthur’s Pass project area includes the Crawford, Polar, Poulter and Savannah
ranges, as well as the western endsofthe Dampier and Studleighranges.
The southern boundary runs from near Binser Saddle in awesterly direction toapoint
just past Douglas Stream. The western boundary then more or less follows the ridge
onto the Polar Range to Walker Pass, Mt Hunt and Worsley Pass towards MtKoeti
before droppingdown to the Minchin Bivouac and backuptoMtByrne.
The northern boundary runs from Mt Byrne along the Crawford Range tothe Lake
Mason Hut.The eastern boundary runs from Binser Saddletothe head ofLower Farm
Stream, follows the Poulter River East Branch across to Bull Creek and up onto the
Dampierand Studleigh ranges then down to near LakeMason Hut.
The Arthur’s Passand LakeSumner areaispredominately beech forestwith open and
steepsided river valleysthat extendtotussock lands and exposed mountain tops. It is
home toorange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka, great spotted kiwi/roroa, rock wren/
pīwauwau and yellowhead/mohua.
Why we are doing predator control.
Predation by rodents and stoats causes orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka and
otherthreatened native species to declineand, in somecases, theyfacelocal extinction.
DOC has worked closely with its Treaty partnerTeNgāi Tūāhuriri Rūnunga on desired
outcomes and consulted with stakeholders andthe community.
Predator control works
In 2019 asimilar predator control operation was undertaken. Since then, the wild
population of orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka in Arthur’s Pass and Lake
Sumner has grown from approximately 150-200 to justover 300 birds.
Method of predator control
This is arepublication of earlier notices for the Arthur’s Pass operation which advised
that workwould begin from the 2nd of December2021.
The public are advised that helicopters will begin the aerialapplication of baits containing
biodegradable 1080 over the area shown onthe map at the first suitable opportunity.
Non-toxic prefeed bait will be applied 5-7 days beforehand toentice the rodents to eat
the pellets.
Non-toxic pre-feed baits are cylindrical cerealpellets,approximately 2cminlengthand
sandy coloured (notdyed).Prefeedcontains acinnamon lure to attract rodents.
Toxic baits are cylindrical cereal pellets, approximately 2cminlength. They are dyed
green todeter birds and contain acinnamon lure to attract rodents. Each toxic bait
contains 0.15% of sodium fluoroacetate(1080).
The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology toensure
bait dropsinthe designated area. Please see map attached.
The pesticideispoisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember:
• DO NOT touch or eat the bait
• WATCH CHILDREN at all times
• DO NOTEAT animals from this area
•Toxicbaitsand carcasses are DEADLYtoDOGS
Observe theserules whenever you see warningsigns placedat the public accessways
in the above areas. Warning signs indicate that pesticide residues may remain inbaits
andcarcasses,possibly formorethan six months.
Allwork is weatherdependent andpeople intendingtovisit the affectedarea before
31/03/2022 are advised to check the VFML and DOC websites for the status of the
operation, and/orseek up-to-date information from the DOC office in Rangiora.
If you suspect poisoning
Always contact: Your local doctor or local hospital orthe National Poisons Centre:
JESUS CHRIST -
ACOMING NEW KING
Alarge percentage of the world recently celebrated
Christmas. Many carols sing of a king being
the circumstances that lead up to anew King and
