Families enjoying sun, surf and sand
By DAVID HILL
Waikuku Beach might lack the glamour
of Baywatch, but life guards have been
out in force this summer.
Week day patrols have been keeping an
eye on ‘‘wellbehaved’’ swimmers at the
Waikuku, Pegasus and Woodend
beaches, Surf Life Saving New Zealand
southern regional manager Stu Bryce
says.
‘‘It’s good to see so many families out
there together and enjoying themselves,’’
he says.
‘‘We’ve had people asking questions
and children listening to the life guards,
which is good because if people can
understand the surf better then they
know how to be safe when the life guards
aren’t around.’’
Ocean conditions have been good and,
aside from the usual ‘‘minor first aids
and afew assists’’, there have been no
issues to report.
‘‘People have been swimming between
the flags and looking after each other,’’
he says.
While there have been no major
incidents on the patrolled beaches in
North Canterbury, the life guards joined
the Coastguard in the search for a
missing swimmer who drowned on the
Waimakariri River last month.
‘‘It’s gutting. My thoughts go out to the
family,’’ Mr Bryce says.
Outside of patrolling the beaches, the
region’s surf life saving clubs have been
recognising the efforts of young life
guards.
Among them is Waikuku Beach Surf
Life Saving Club member Lily Gaughan,
Mr Bryce says Waikuku Beach is one of
the strongest clubs in the South Island,
with alarge family membership.
‘‘They have great numbers and they do
it really well with their family model,’’ he
says.
‘‘They have mums and dads out on
patrol with their kids and they have the
learn to swim classes which brings in the
younger ones.’’
Paid weekday patrols were in action
for four weeks at the Pegasus and
Woodend beaches, while at Waikuku
Beach the weekly patrols complete their
sixweek stint tomorrow (January 28).
Volunteer weekend patrols will
continue to operate at Waikuku Beach
until midMarch.
The Waikuku Beach club is the only
surf life saving club in North Canterbury.
New sign adds character
Visitors dropping in to enjoy some sun at
Waikuku Beach are being greeted by a
new welcome sign.
The sign is the first of several welcome
signs commissioned by the Woodend
Sefton Community Board, chairperson
Shona Powell says.
‘‘It’s something the board decided a
few years ago that we wanted to work on
to give the local area some identity.
‘‘And it’s so people realise they are
coming into atown, so it prompts them to
slow down.
‘‘It’s something abit different. We
decided to do it ourselves as it gives the
community more input into it, rather
than just putting it on to the council.’’
The sign incorporates elements which
relate to Waikuku Beach, including the
ocean and local birdlife.
Next up is aWoodend Beach welcome
sign, followed by three signs for Woodend
itself.
