Shedding sheep fetch high prices<br />

The firstshedding sheep sale at the<br />
Hawarden Saleyards provedtobea<br />
roaring success last week.<br />

says ‘‘crazy money’’ was paid for the<br />
stockwhich included Wiltshire,<br />
Australianwhites, Dorper, Damara<br />
and crossbred‘‘hairsheep’’.<br />
The day’stop pricewas $560 for apen<br />
of 13 Australian white ewe lambs<br />
entered by Belborough Holdings, of<br />
West Melton.<br />
‘‘We had acomplete clearance of<br />
stockand it was met with good<br />
demand,’’MrJarman says.<br />
‘‘It was something abit different and<br />
people could have agood look and buy<br />
what they liked.’’<br />
The sale was heldonWednesday,<br />
<strong>January</strong> 19, to coincide with the Mt<br />
Cass onfarm saleofWiltshire sheep<br />
held earlierinthe day.<br />
With the Hawarden Ewe Fair due to<br />
be held tomorrow, Mr Jarman is not<br />
expectingtomatchthe shedding sheep<br />
sale prices.<br />
‘‘We really didn’tknow how it was<br />
goingtogoand it went betterthan<br />
expected.<br />
‘‘Mt Cass hasgot agoodreputation<br />
and they getgood demand, whereasour<br />
sale was awholelot of bits and pieces<br />
and we had afew farmers who wanted<br />
to have agoand they were well<br />
rewarded.’’<br />
‘‘We’re hoping to get afew more<br />
alongnext yearsowecan grow the<br />
sale.’’<br />
Mr Jarmansays there wassomething<br />
for everyone,from farmers ‘‘looking for<br />
something abit different’’ to<br />
lifestylers.<br />
O’CarrollFarming Ltd, of Parnassus,<br />
received$320 each for two pens of twotoothWiltshire<br />
ewes and $340for for<br />
thirdpen.<br />
Avendorfrom Wakefield sold two<br />
pens of annualdraftWiltshire ewes for<br />
$230 each and athird pen for $300.<br />
ChrisEnsor,ofCust, sold apen of<br />
mixedaged Wiltshire ewesfor $280.<br />
Wiltshire ewe lambs sold for between<br />
$95 and $175.<br />
In the rams,Daniel Wheeler, of<br />
Amberley,sold his collectionof<br />
‘‘Meatmaster’’ rams for between $500<br />
and $750.<br />
Belborough Holdings sold atwotoothAustralian<br />
white ram for $800<br />
and eight ram lambs for between$350<br />
and $525. Buyers were from as far north<br />
as Kaitaia and from Southland in the<br />
south.<br />

second annualWiltshire Sheep Sale.<br />
‘‘Buyers were prepared to pay agood<br />
premium for any goodshedding type<br />
sheep,’’ he says.<br />
Twotoothewes soldfor between<br />
$220 to $380, whileannualdraft ewes<br />
fetched between $190 and$350 and ewe<br />
lambssold for up to $325.<br />
The top price for atwotooth ram was<br />
$4600.<br />
Mr Orchard saysthere werearound<br />
50 registeredbuyers at the sale, with<br />
another 12 registeredvia the BIDR<br />
online bidding system. Buyers<br />
travelledfrom as far north as Kerikeri<br />
and from as far south as Gore.<br />

the Hawarden Ewe Fair split over<br />
two days.<br />
Stockagentshad initially<br />
predicted there would be around<br />
18,000 sheep entered for sale,which<br />
is the capacityfor the Hawarden<br />
Saleyards.<br />
But Hazlett Livestock auctioneer<br />
Allister Orchard says capital stock<br />
linesfrom recent farm sales has seen<br />
the ewe numbers swell to morethan<br />
20,000.<br />
‘‘Oneminute you don’t think<br />
there’sgoingtobetoo many, but it’s<br />
amazing wherethey all comefrom.’’<br />
Recent maintenance at the<br />
Hawarden Saleyards has not helped,<br />
with timberstilltoarrivetoreplace<br />
some of the pens.<br />
The first day of the salewill be on<br />
Friday, <strong>January</strong> 28, with up to 15,000<br />
ewesexpected to go under the<br />
hammer. Viewing will be available<br />
from9am, with the auction from<br />
11am. Around 8000 ewes willbeup<br />
for sale the following Friday,<br />
