It was ahard decisionto make but made in line with the cancellation of many other nationwide events, including the Methven A&P Show. Mayfield A&P Association president Suzy King was ‘‘absolutely gutted’’ butsaid it was necessary to cancel now to prevent further financial losses if the show could not go ahead because of the Redtraffic light system. Theassociation had already incurred costs of printing their schedule, which was not reusable. It is better to cut losses now before welose too much more, she said. Alot of work has gone on behind the scenes by the committee, so to get to this stage is ‘‘absolutely devastating’’, shesaid. ‘‘Wehavenot made this decision lightly, and are devastated at the impactthis will have on our community.’’ Theassociation will still run their gift lamb competition on March 9, and thespud in a bucket competition on March 11, andalso the onfarm heifer and winter feed competitions, which would be announced on their Facebook page. ‘‘Amassivethank you to all our sponsors, exhibitors, site holders, volunteers, judges and committee we look forward to seeing youall again next year,’’ she said. Mayfield's cancellation follows on from the earlier cancellation of theMethven A&P Show, duetorun on March 19. TheMethven A&P Association are also still running standalone community competitions and auctions. But cancelling the show was aheartbreaking decision which had gutted committee members,said association secretary Pip Ivey. However with the printing of their show schedule looming, and no ‘‘bright line on the horizon’’ over amovefrom the Red traffic light system, the call was made,she said. Thecommittee hadbeenvery stringent with spending and kept costs low for as long as possible, shesaid. But had to commit to the print now, if it was going to go ahead. Show president Ben McIntoshadvised members and stallholdersbefore making a public announcement. He said it was ‘‘with regret the Methven A&P Committee wishes to advise thatunder the current traffic light status the decision hasbeenmade to cancelthe 2022 show. In keeping with the spirit of the show, thechildrens spud in a bucket and colouring competitions, gift calf and gift lambauctions and competitions, wheat competitions and the tertiary scholarship will all continue,’’ he said. Mid Canterbury Children’s DaytrusteeWarren Janettsaid insteadofcancelling for the third year in arow, committee members opted to postpone it and, depending onthe covid traffic light level, holdfun mini sessions throughout theyear. Hesaid watch this spacefor details on future Sunday afternoon sessions which would include individual fun activities usually run on Children’s Day such as Pedalmania biking fun or paintball target sessions. Mr Janett said it was sad the full event would not be run, but theminisessions would give children family fun throughout theyearsotheydid not miss out.
