Water, Water by Bob Massey “Water, Water everywhere and not a drop to drink !” Water is essential for our existence. We are made up of 2/3rd water and need constantly topping up. With the establishment of fixed settlements, an adequate, clean and reliable supply of water was key to where villages were situated. The water could come from a river, stream, spring or well. As villages grew, so did the need for more water. Supplies were often polluted and started to dry up, as the streams and rivers were also being used to power mills and later machinery. Areas around the country started to expand rapidly with the industrial revolution and there was often insufficient water to meet the growing needs of the population. The water supply in Burton Joyce was no exception and it soon became apparent that a means of supplying more water was required. Water was available but it was far underground. Too deep for simple wells. In 1880, the Nottingham Corporation Water Department was formed. Marriott Ogle Tarbotton, the borough Engineer, commissioned the building of Papplewick Pumping Station which was completed in 1884. This allowed water to be pumped to reservoirs to feed the growing needs of the city and the surrounding area. Smaller pumping stations using boreholes, rather than the large diameter wells at Papplewick, were built. The first one was at Burton Joyce and was completed in 1898. It had a steam pump fired by coal. This was used to pump water to the reservoirs at Mapperley and Colwick Hill. The three boreholes at Burton Joyce were driven some 500ft to the water table but were only 15” in diameter. The following year, the city of Nottingham asked for tenders to extend the operation at Burton Joyce by adding an engine house along with a cottage to house the engineer who would need to be permanently on site in case of problems. The work was completed in the latter half of 1899 and the engineer now took up residence. Further additions and expansion of the works were made again in 1908 and just before the First World War in 1913, costing £23,633, a considerable sum for the day. In 1926 the steam plant was replaced with three electric and three booster pumps. At maximum operation 3 million gallons of water was now pumped from these small boreholes each day. Just before the Second World War, in June 1939, a party of Swedish engineers visited the site to look at the use of deep small boreholes and the pumping of water. They also visited the Stanton iron works to look at the manufacture of the pipes used to transport this water. This was all in order to see about setting up a similar scheme in parts of Sweden. As a result of the experience with small borewells at Burton Joyce five other similar pumping stations were also built between 1945 and 1969 supplying around 23 million gallons of water a day. Although the buildings are now no longer in operation at Burton Joyce, the pumping station was at the forefront of the technology of its day.
