$3m grant in pipeline
for Edgeware Pool
• By Fiona Ellis
EDGEWARE Pool campaigners
are excited they may get a muchneeded
$3 million funding boost.
The funds towards reopening
the pool in St Albans have been
added to the city council’s draft
2022/23 plan.
However, even if this is approved
the St Albans Pavilion
and Pool Group still faces a
fundraising challenge of up to
$700,000.
Member Lynne O’Keefe said
while the price tag for a new pool
was set at $3 million, this was
calculated early last year and she
believed it had risen since.
“You know where building
costs have gone, so we’re probably
thinking there could be another
million on top of it,” O’Keefe
said.
HOPEFUL: St Albans Pavilion and Pool Group member Lynne O’Keefe believes Edgeware Pool
could be reopened within two years if the city council approves its proposed $3 million grant.
Serial volunteer does ‘the right thing’
• By Emily Moorhouse
A FULL-TIME worker who
juggles five volunteer roles says
it’s all about helping others.
Sanjeewa Thanushka, who
goes by the name AK, moved
here from Dubai 15 years ago,
although he is originally from Sri
Lanka.
He came to New Zealand to
study specialisation in retail
management before becoming
a full-time assistant manager at
Look Sharp.
Back in Dubai, AK worked
long hours so when he arrived
here he was surprised at how
much spare time he had, in spite
of working five days a week.
So he decided to volunteer
on his days off, starting at
Community Patrols of New
Zealand. He now volunteers for
Red Cross, The Salvation Army,
Age Concern and Gap Filler.
“I believe time is really
precious, this time will never
come back to you,” he said. “I
love to work with people, I am a
people oriented person. I don’t
accept money or anything. I do it
for free but I do the good thing,
the right thing.”
AK, of Sydenham, has
been separated from his wife
and daughter for more than
three years now due to border
restrictions. They are in Sri
Lanka, and he said the volunteer
work has helped him cope with
missing them.
PATROL: AK with City Park patrol’s police liaison officer Senior Constable John Way.
“It’s really tough you know, so
I have to keep my mind [busy]
you know, have to have the
proper mindset to work.”
AK joined the City Park
patrollers three years ago and
has since developed a simplified
“in car” communication system
to make recording and reporting
to the police easier.
Last year he was learning
about the patrollers’ reporting
structure when he thought to
himself the system could not
only be simplified to make it
easier to operate, but it could also
be cheaper. It would just be a task
that took a lot of time.
So AK took it upon himself
to organise a meeting with the
developers of the system and
propose his idea.
“I thought okay I can do it, I
just took the risk and asked them
if it was okay,” he said.
Once the test runs were done,
AK’s new system was put in
place and has saved the patrollers
a lot of time and money, said
City Park CPNZ treasurer
John Hammond.
“That’s made things a lot
easier for us because we used
to write in the car and when
you’re writing in the car you can
imagine there’s a whole lot of
scribbles,” Hammond said.
“So he managed to streamline
that for us so it can be read.”
Aside from being a “wiz” with
IT, Hammond said AK was a
great person to be around.
“He’s an awesome guy, he
would do anything for you. It’s
just the sort of guy he is, he’s very
generous with his time.”
“He’s constantly always very
reliable for patrol, I don’t think
he’s ever missed a night with us,”
Hammond said.
City Park CPNZ acting
chairwoman Lynda Cameron
also praised AK for the work he’s
done with the patrollers.
“He’s our observer and he’s
good at it, he often sees things
that I don’t see when we’re
driving around,” Cameron
said.
“He’s so helpful and he knows
so much about IT and just about
people, he understands people
which is great. He’s just lovely to
have around.”
AK said volunteering is a
way of sharing knowledge with
others as well as getting involved
with your community.
“I feel if you can contribute
then it will be very helpful and
taking off the burden from
someone else.”
‘Fundraising has been difficult’
•From page 1
The former pool was demolished
in 2007 by the city council,
and the community have been
pushing to get a new one rebuilt
ever since, but funding has
proved difficult.
Currently, the amount raised
was approaching the $300,000
mark, O’Keefe said.
She was delighted with the
proposed funding boost.
“It just means we’ll be able to
do it a whole lot sooner.”
O’Keefe was unsure how
long the building consent
process would take and said
the group was also waiting
on a geotechnical report to be
completed before plans could be
finalised.
However, if granted funding,
it would go “all out” in hopes of
opening the pool in the summer
of 2023/2024.
“It goes a long way to lessen
the pain of the community losing
its pool and we really thank
the council for addressing that
and reaching out to the community.”
She was unable to say when
the pool might reopen without
the proposed funding.
“Fundraising has been difficult
because there are good fundraising
organisations around but
they like to come in when the
community has made a substantial
amount itself.”
Receiving such a large grant
would motivate the community
PLANS: If granted funding, Edgeware Pool campaigners would go “all out” in hopes of
opening the pool in the summer of 2023/2024.
to fundraise for the balance, she
said.
Fundraising had
slowed significantly due
to the Covid-19 pandemic,
which put a stop
to fundraising events
such as quiz nights.
The group recently
launched a website
edgewarepool.co.nz, to
keep the public informed of the
Pauline
Cotter
pool’s progress and enable them
to donate.
“We’re just thrilled that
the council are backing us to
the extent that they’ve put us
into the Annual Plan.”
Although this was still in
the draft phase, she thought
it showed commitment to
the area.
The pool was included
in the Draft Plan in a meeting
Thursday March 3 2022
last week, in which Innes Ward
councillor Pauline Cotter spoke
of the community’s need for the
facility.
“This has been a 16-year
struggle towards the dream of
reinstating their pool,” she said.
The public will be able to
submit their opinions on the
draft plan from March 11 before
a final plan is adopted by the city
council in June.
The instigator of smiles and his garden
• By Fiona Ellis and John
Cosgrove
ALTHOUGH HE gives away
his home-grown fruits and
vegetables to the community,
Mark Leighs does not see himself
as a gardener.
Instead, the St Albans resident
sees himself as an instigator of
smiles. His Dover Courts garden
contains items of whimsy with
which he aims to brighten the
day of passers-by.
“If you can make one person
smile in tough times, that’s not a
bad thing, is it?” Leighs said.
His favourite items were the
superhero-inspired scarecrows,
although they were not as well
made as some of his other installations.
“That’s simply because of
the reactions they get from the
youngsters that go by, and the
parents with their even younger
ones.”
Iron Man and Superman currently
watch over the garden,
with a possible Spider-Man to
join later.
Just the day before, some children
had walked past, and their
eyes had lit up as they pointed
out the scarecrows.
“Big pay cheque right there. It’s
not a monetary pay cheque . . .
but it’s a hell of a pay cheque.”
The garden also contains
poetry by Robert Frost and Spike
Milligan, as well as Leighs’ own
compositions under the pen
EYE-CATCHING: Mark Leighs aims to brighten people’s days with his St Albans garden,
which is a blend of flowers, produce and recycled installations. PHOTO: STAR MEDIA
name Omar Kiam.
Proving the adage that one
person’s trash is another person’s
treasure, Leigh has incorporated
second-hand items into the
displays.
“I go for walks and I do the opshop
circuit and a lot of them have
junk outside the front for free.”
Some junk still had life in
them. For example, he found two
rubber ducks for the garden this
way.
“To be able to create something
that can make at least one
other person in my little community
go ‘oh cool’ well, that’s a
win for me.”
The Covid-19 pandemic has
caused Leighs to spend more
time in the garden.
“When we were all locked
down I got into taking conscious
effort in my garden.”
Until that point, he knew only
a little about gardening, as it was
not a hobby he’d had the time to
cultivate.
He liked the fact it was an activity
that anyone could do that
required little money.
Among the crops were corn,
tomatoes, strawberries, beans,
rhubarb, peas, and cabbages.
“I used to just do veggies but
then I realised that bees don’t eat
veggies as much as humans.”
Now he also grew flowers as
part of a “balanced” garden.
A sign notified people the
home-grown bounty was free
and invited them to help themselves
to items in the garden
fridge.
This was in part a homage to
a man he remembered from his
childhood, who had a market
garden but also gave away snack
items, such as carrots.
“Of course, I have a nice
munch now and then.”
Leighs also has a desire to give
back to the community. This is
because he lives in council housing
subsidised by the public, so
he wants to give something in
return.
People of all walks of life were
struggling due to the Covid-19
pandemic, he said.
A former street kid, he empathised
with people who were
experiencing difficulties.
“Times are tough out there.”
He hoped people would come
away from his garden with
something to eat, a smile, or even
the inspiration to go and create
something themselves.
Charity founder runs for cause
• By Kristie Boland
DRIVEN: Cameron Haylock is the founder of the Thanks Foundation, which helps improve the well-being of young
people. He plans to do more endurance running after the Port Hills Ultra. PHOTOS: ALEX GRIMSHAW & JOE LEEPER
CAMERON Haylock discovered
the ‘runners high’ during
lockdown – and used that high
to run 100km to raise $5500 for
Christchurch youth.
The Thanks Foundation
founder from Sumner has added
endurance running to his list of
sports.
He’s also a surfer, snowboarder
and skater and his not-for-profit
organisation helps young people
in Christchurch access these
sports.
“I just see how many young
people would want to be a part of
these sports,” he said.
Haylock, along with others
from the Thanks Foundation,
have started taking young people
on weekly skating trips and hope
to do the same with surfing and
snowboarding.
The 30-year-old recently ran
the Port Hills Ultra. Leading up
to the race, he set up a Givealittle
page with a goal of raising $5000.
The money will go towards
surf equipment to give young
people around the city.
“We all know the benefit of
surfing on your well-being so
we want to make sure more and
more young people get the opportunity
to get out there,” said
Haylock.
After the lockdown last year,
he decided he needed to do
something different to “just surfing
or drinking coffee” and took
up running.
“I actually managed to get that
thing they call the runners high
and then I started educating
myself around the endurance
and trail-running. I got curious
about how far I could push
myself physically and mentally,”
said Haylock.
He pushed himself to his limits
three weeks ago in torrential ran
and fierce wind.
It took him 17 hours and 15
minutes to complete 90km of
the 100km ultra run through the
Port Hills, but due to freezing
and dangerous conditions he had
to stop there.
“At the end of the day, I was
pretty stoked to go that far, it
just wasn’t worth it carrying on.
I still had the ability to process
and analyse what was going on
with my body and everything
else around me,” said Haylock.
He went back last Wednesday
to complete the final 10km.
The Givealittle page has now
raised more than $5500 for
the equipment and Haylock is
“stoked” with the outcome.
He said he sees young people
challenging themselves all the
time to learn new things and he
wants to do the same.
“Being the founder of a non for
profit I always want to be seen
challenging myself mentally,
physically, spiritually or emotionally,”
he said.
Haylock said Thanks Foundation
exists to share the power of
continuously saying thanks.
“Thanks Foundation
creates opportunities for
young people of all abilities to
build stories collectively and
individually, intentionally
focusing on their mental health
and well-being, while having
fun,” said Haylock.
HOME & HEATING
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
Thursday March 3 2022
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when it
comes to choosing the perfect heat pump or
air conditioning system for their home or
office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home
both in Winter and Summer. This can be
achieved by using ducted systems or multi
systems and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community
Services Card, a SuperGold combo card or
who live in a low-income area as determined
by deciles 8-10 on the New Zealand
Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
it’s time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
What makes a great
Heat Transfer System?
There are a number of Heat Transfer
systems on the market. Smooth-Air
ventilation specialists offer a range of HTU
Heat Transfer Units with carefully selected
components to optimise the system:
They use insulated duct to transfer the
heated air with as little heat loss as possible.
The fan moves sufficient air for the distance
and number of rooms, without being noisy.
The diffusers send the heat to the floor,
not to skim the across the ceilings. All
components are good quality - designed to
operate for years without problems.
Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range
of options: One to four rooms, with or
without thermostat and with a choice
of grilles and diffusers. HTUs improve
energy efficiency in your house, as you
are using excess heat. They have low
power consumption - only 80watts for
the three room system. Circulating air
through the house also reduces the risk
of damp.
You can also choose the HTU
version with downjet diffusers, which
throw the warm air downwards to the
floor. These downjet diffusers can also
be adjusted to regulate which room
receives the most warm air.
An average size living room requires
2-4 kw of heating, yet appliances such
as log burners generate heat in the
region of 10 -20kw. This leaves an
excess of 8 -16kw of heat which sits at
high level in the heated room, usually
above door level.
Heat transfer units work best where
very hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer
near the ceiling. So heat pumps, which
circulate warm air around the room with
no layering, are not suitable as a heat source
by themselves. However, if you have both
log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer
systems with thermostat can work very
well: The heat pump stops operating once
the heat from the fire has heated the room,
and the heat transfer kicks in above this
point, once there is a layer of hot air at the
ceiling.
Stormwater Management Plan
A stormwater management plan sets out the ways
in which Christchurch City Council will meet the
requirements of its stormwater resource consent,
which was granted by Environment Canterbury
in 2019 – the Comprehensive Stormwater
Network Discharge Consent (CSNDC). Its purpose
is to improve surface and groundwater quality
and address problems caused by the nature
of stormwater discharged into waterways. It
promotes water quality improvements over time
in order to meet targets in the Land and Water
Regional Plan. This is one of seven plans being
prepared over the period 2020 to 2023.
We want to hear your thoughts on the Ihutai-
