Sunflowers standing tall
BLOOMING GOOD: Jimina Weir with her sunflowers, including her 2.4m plant which was named the tallest plant in a
competition by the Hei Hei Broomfield Community Development Trust.
JIMINA WEIR spent the
summer nurturing her
sunflowers with plenty of
water, but the Hei Hei resident
was still surprised to be
awarded the tallest sunflower
in a community competition
for her 2.4m plant.
She was one of about 60 to
take part in the sunflower growing
competition run by the Hei
Hei Broomfield Community
Development Trust, also known
as “126 On The Corner.”
Seeds were given away in November
and on Saturday community
development worker
Tracey Buunk spent the day
visiting people in their gardens
to judge the results with Henk
Biking and
walking
preferred
to taking
the bus
• By Fiona Ellis
WALKING AND biking are
common transport methods, but
taking the bus is not, a Halswell
Residents’ Association survey has
revealed.
Association
co-secretary David
Hawke said more
than 300 people
had taken part in
the survey, which
focused on community
activities,
use of facilities
and transportation
habits.
David
Hawke
Hawke said the most important
discovery from the survey was
the importance of biking and
walking.
“We expected cars would
dominate, which they do, but
actually walking and biking to
community facilities is right up
there,” Hawke said.
“The importance of active
transport really surprised us.”
People were asked to select
which method of transport they
used and could select multiple options.
Car was selected 264 times,
walking 109 times and biking 45
times. Just 24 people selected bus
as a mode of transport.
“Public transport is only of
minor importance to access
recreation and community
facilities,” Hawke said.
Speed being monitored after
residents share safety concerns
• By Fiona Ellis
AN INVESTIGATION is under
way to see if a Wigram road is
safe.
Traffic data is being collected
by the city council following two
residents of Awatea Gardens raising
safety concerns.
Devices for collecting speed
data were installed last month,
and the issue was also raised
by the residents at a Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board meeting.
There had been multiple
near-misses between traffic and
pedestrians with traffic not keeping
to the 40km/h speed limit,
the pair told the board.
“There’s near misses every day.
it’s got to the point where we’re
just waiting for an accident,” one
resident said.
The pair said Awatea Gardens
had increasingly more traffic,
and a way to prevent traffic from
speeding was needed.
Speed bumps were the solution
they supported, showing the
board four locations on a map
where they believed these would
be most effective.
City council acting transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said information from
the Awatea Gardens devices
were not yet available, as data on
vehicle speed and volume was
still being collected.
“Once this is complete we will
analyse the data and report back
to the board. This will likely be
within the next three months,”
Wright said.
Physical traffic calming
features, including speed bumps,
could be warranted depending
on the traffic analysis.
SPEED LIMITS: The city council is investigating traffic
speed and volumes in Awatea Gardens following residents’
concerns.
In Brief
WOULD YOU SHOP IN THE
CBD MORE IF PARKING
COST LESS?
The Greater Hornby Residents
Association is asking people to fill
in a survey about whether they
would shop in the central city
more if the city council reduced
parking to $2 per hour. The idea
was considered at a city council
meeting last week. The survey link
can be found on the association’s
Facebook page and feedback will
impact the stance taken by the
association when presenting to
the council on the issue.
Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to
the Hornby High School community.
What a fabulous start to the year at Te
Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka Hornby High School.
It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome
back all of our students and whānau, and to
welcome many new students and whānau into
our community.
We continue to experience significant roll
growth (26 per cent over the past five years),
and we are now at our build capacity, with
thinking turning to how we will accommodate
the predicted future growth. A key question for
the community is how large you want your kura
to become.
We continue to celebrate great NCEA
achievements from our senior students. In 2020
we saw a near doubling of Merit and Excellence
endorsements across all three NCEA levels.
It has been gratifying to see those levels of
endorsement hold up in 2021.
Of special note are the two scholarship
examination successes gained by 2021 head
student Cameron (statistics), and Year 12
student Nathan (English). These two amazing
successes are the leading edge of a wave of
success that we see building throughout the
kura.
Not only are we proud of these two students,
we are proud of all of our akonga. Students are
encouraged to follow their own individualised
pathway, and for some that means gaining that
apprenticeship that they have always sought,
for others it lies in academic success, or sporting
or cultural recognition. Whatever their choice,
we celebrate with them and whānau the ability
of our young people to find meaning in life, to
find ways to forge great lives for themselves
with a strong values base of commitment,
achievement, resilience, and respect, our four
school values. Despite the pall that Covid places
across us all, we are excited about what 2022
holds.
Students dig
deep to support
Tongan relief
After the devastating
earthquake
and tsunami
hit Tonga
earlier this year,
communities
have rallied
to support the
islands in any
way they can, and
Hornby High School is no exception.
We held a mufti day last week with all funds
raised going to Red Cross Tonga.
Having the theme of red and white to resonate
with the Tongan flag, the school was a sea of
red and white on Friday as a show of support.
Raising almost $900, it was the biggest
collection at a mufti day for a number of years,
proving once again the support our students
wished to show the people of Tonga.
Top academic students continue to flourish
at Hornby High School with news of two
scholarship examination successes. 2021
Head Student Cameron gained a scholarship
in statistics, while Nathan (Year 12 last year)
gained a scholarship in English.
Scholarships are awarded to students who
score in the top 1.5 to 2.5 per cent of their
entire national year group.
Nathan’s scholarship is especially
commendable because he was in Year 12
when he sat the examination. Scholarships are
more usually attempted by students in their
last year of secondary school – Year 13.
This comes on the back of the school’s second
successive year with high Merit and Excellence
endorsements across all three levels of NCEA.
By Nadia
Theatre has always been one of the biggest
passions in my life.
From creating two-minute plays at preschool,
to performing 40-minute Shakespearean
pieces in Wellington, drama has always been
who I am.
I began my journey as an actor in 2016
when I joined Hornby High School’s
Regional Shakespeare Festival team for the
Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand
(SGCNZ), University of Otago Sheilah Winn
Shakespeare Festival (UOSWSF). The passion
of both my teacher, Mrs Joanne Clark, and
my peers, excited me, and I made a promise
to continue acting in the Shakespeare
Festival all the way to Year 13.
Seven years later and we’re still going strong!
However, in my sixth year at Hornby High
School, I was given the privilege of being
chosen for the annual SGCNZ National
Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP)
event after performing in the regional
festival in Christchurch. This meant I went
to Wellington for nine days in October 2021
to participate in a journey where we worked
alongside 49 other New Zealand youths to
create a 40-minute performance piece. My
piece was Measure for Measure, directed by
Tom McRory.
During NSSP there is a selection process to
To my amazement, I received a call from the
This was an incredible surprise to me and I
am so so grateful to have been chosen. The
plan for London is to go mid-July, so together
with Hornby High School we are figuring out
ways to source the $10,000 needed to get
Successes like these are the result of
they are the result of the entire six or seven
incredibly dedicated teaching staff. Every
member of our staff team contributes,
whether it is the regular cheery “Mōrena, my
deeper conversations with a student’s Dean,
Call for help for trip to The Globe
Even though the start of the year
is an incredibly busy time and the
prefects are new to their roles, they
wanted to make the most of the first
event of the year.
Valentine’s Day presented as the
perfect opportunity to spread some
prefects, pictured at right, promoted
the day by helping students to show
they cared about their friends by
sending them an anonymous note,
The day was a great success as the
cupid-themed prefects delivered the
Biking over taking
the bus – survey
• From page 1
“Public transport is only of
minor importance to access
recreation and community
facilities,” Hawke said.
Although the number seven
bus had a direct route to the city
along the main road, large parts
of Halswell were not served by
public transport, he said.
The purpose of the survey
was to help the association in
advocating for the community.
“One of the real concerns that
we have is how [Environment
Canterbury] and the city council
can work together to boost public
transport.”
Also in the top three finds were
the importance of playgrounds
and skate parks for socialising.
A minority of 126 people stated
they rarely or never used such
facilities and those that did often
met others there.
Lastly, the survey showed some
people were seeking facilities
further afield than those offered
in Halswell.
“People travel quite long
distances, whether to swim or
walk their dog. They’re travelling
out of the Halswell area to do
either of those things,” Hawke
said.
For example, 65 people
sometimes swam at Pioneer
Recreation & Sport Centre in
Somerfield, whereas 88 people
sometimes swam at Halswell
Pool in summer.
The survey is still open and can
be filled out via the association’s
Facebook page.
On a mission to keep community hall
At 109-years-old, the
Halswell Community Hall
is busier than ever. It is
overseen by a committee
of seven members,
including Judith Penney
for whom the hall is
particularly close to
home. Fiona Ellis reports
MOVING HOUSES in 2017,
Judith Penney did not expect to
find a sense of purpose alongside
her new home.
However, that is what she
chanced upon when she moved
next door to the Halswell Community
Hall.
Now hall committee secretarytreasurer,
booking officer and
caretaker, Judith is one of the
volunteer team keeping the
109-year-old community venue
running.
“I think I was just being neighbourly,
I popped in to say hello,”
Judith said.
She began chatting with a
committee member who later
told her they were on the lookout
for a new volunteer to act as
treasurer.
“I have been on committees
most of my life, I’ve been treasurer
most of the time, so I said: ‘I
can do that’.”
“What I found there were
some lovely, lovely people.”
She believed the 200-person
capacity hall was busier now
VOLUNTEERS: Halswell Hall committee chairwoman Brenda Newton (left) and secretarytreasurer
hall running.
than it had ever been before,
with about seven more groups
using it as a base than this time
last year.
“At the moment we have 25
groups who come for mostly one
hour each week.”
These ranged from active clubs
offering activities such as tai-chi
and zumba, to social and artistic
groups.
Combined with those attending
private events such as
birthdays celebrations, over
25,000 visits were paid to the hall
each year.
“It’s all about binding the community
together and creating
that support for people.”
The committee aimed to provide
an affordable community
meeting place, she said.
Discounted rates for struggling
small groups were sometimes
charged, to support them while
they got started.
This approach meant finding
funds to make improvements to
the building could be challenging.
“The hall is reliant on [grants].
We make enough to cover running
costs and that’s great, but it
doesn’t cover upgrades.”
Opened in 1913 by MP and
postmaster-general Heaton Rhodes,
committee meeting minutes
dating back to 1939 gave a feel
for times past.
“It was the old typical country
hall. It’s pretty much been the
focal point of whatever was going
on in the community,” Judith
said.
There were frequent discussions
about buying firewood in
the minutes, and pianos were
also in hot demand.
The need to find a new instrument
or have a current one tuned
was a recurring theme in the
minutes.
Nowadays people preferred to
organise their own DJs or bring
along their own sound system
when music was called for, she
said.
Before the front of the building
contained Forget Me Knots
craft shop, it used to be a police
station, and before that a bank,
she said.
The records also show the history
of repair work at the hall, an
ongoing issue the committee was
tackling.
“There was some major damage
following the earthquake,
but it really only affected part of
the hall.
“Those bits were replaced, but
the rest of it is still old.
The committee was on a mission
to future-proof the building
with work that would last a long
time, she said.
Upgrades could also be longterm
money-savers, such as replacing
the old clay pipes rather
than having a maintenance
worker coming to repair them
year after year.
“As treasurer, that didn’t sit
well with me.”
The front and back wall of the
hall was in line for repair, as was
the storage section.
“We’re redoing the whole site
storage area, hopefully, this
year.”
Next June would mark the
110th anniversary since the hall
celebrated its official opening,
and the committee planned to
mark the occasion.
“We’ll have a big party next
year.”
The seven people on the committee
all played a part in the
success of the hall, but would
welcome new members, she said.
Finding volunteers was a
struggle, and short term and
one-off contributions were
welcome to contribute what they
could.
For Judith, a self-described
people-person with a
background in real estate,
connecting with others was
the most rewarding part of the
role.
“Working with people . . .
there’s so much buzz.”
Her last house in Halswell had
been 500m from the hall, and it
had not been on her radar at all.
“We had no involvement with
the community. It was quite
isolated.”
She had so far missed just one
meeting in her entire time on
the committee-the very first, as
she did not realise what time it
was held.
Her work created a sense of
belonging for herself and others.
“Most of our guys that are
there are community-minded.
It’s wonderful, it really is.”
Fewer issues unresolved
• By Fiona Ellis
THOSE LIVING in the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board area are
increasingly likely to have
problems resolved when reaching
out to the city council, a report
shows.
A ticket report for the board’s
Tuesday meeting shows less than
22 per cent of tickets – or issues
the public contacted the city
council about – were left unresolved
in December.
Of 2586 tickets, 2026 were
closed and 560 were open by the
end of the month.
This is an improvement on the
number of unresolved issues for
the previous month, October 20
to November 19, in which 824
tickets out of 2684 were unresolved,
more than 30 per cent.
It is also an improvement on
the ticket report from September
20 to October 19, in which 2270
tickets were completed but 761
were left unresolved, a total of
25.11 percent.
In the most recent report, tickets
fell in a range of categories,
including wheelie bins, transport,
three waters council assets
and property information.
Bin-related problems continued
to be a major issue for the
area in December.
Uncollected bins were the top
reason for a resident to contact
the council, with 261 tickets,
and damaged bins came third
BINS: Uncollected bins continue to top the list of issues
reported to the city council in the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board area.
with 213 tickets.
The previous month uncollected
bins were also the top
issue, with 266 tickets issued,
while damaged bins were the
third most frequent issue with
239 tickets.
The December report shows
an increase in road litter being
reported, with 227 tickets issued,
up from 184 the previous month.
A total 1921 tickets remain
open for the area, with the
average unresolved ticket open
for 95 days, the latest report
shows.
Fifty per cent of open tickets
are less than 32 days old, but 25
per cent are more than 104
days old.
Charity founder runs for cause
• By Kristie Boland
DRIVEN: Cameron Haylock is the founder of the Thanks Foundation, which helps improve the well-being of young
people. He plans to do more endurance running after the Port Hills Ultra. PHOTOS: ALEX GRIMSHAW & JOE LEEPER
CAMERON Haylock discovered
the ‘runners high’ during
lockdown – and used that high
to run 100km to raise $5500 for
Christchurch youth.
The Thanks Foundation
founder from Sumner has added
endurance running to his list of
sports.
He’s also a surfer, snowboarder
and skater and his not-for-profit
organisation helps young people
in Christchurch access these
sports.
“I just see how many young
people would want to be a part of
these sports,” he said.
Haylock, along with others
from the Thanks Foundation,
have started taking young people
on weekly skating trips and hope
to do the same with surfing and
snowboarding.
The 30-year-old recently ran
the Port Hills Ultra. Leading up
to the race, he set up a Givealittle
page with a goal of raising $5000.
The money will go towards
surf equipment to give young
people around the city.
“We all know the benefit of
surfing on your well-being so
we want to make sure more and
more young people get the opportunity
to get out there,” said
Haylock.
After the lockdown last year,
he decided he needed to do
something different to “just surfing
or drinking coffee” and took
up running.
“I actually managed to get that
thing they call the runners high
and then I started educating
myself around the endurance
and trail-running. I got curious
about how far I could push
myself physically and mentally,”
said Haylock.
He pushed himself to his limits
three weeks ago in torrential ran
and fierce wind.
It took him 17 hours and 15
minutes to complete 90km of
the 100km ultra run through the
Port Hills, but due to freezing
and dangerous conditions he had
to stop there.
“At the end of the day, I was
pretty stoked to go that far, it
just wasn’t worth it carrying on.
I still had the ability to process
and analyse what was going on
with my body and everything
else around me,” said Haylock.
He went back last Wednesday
to complete the final 10km.
The Givealittle page has now
raised more than $5500 for
the equipment and Haylock is
“stoked” with the outcome.
He said he sees young people
challenging themselves all the
time to learn new things and he
wants to do the same.
“Being the founder of a non for
profit I always want to be seen
challenging myself mentally,
physically, spiritually or emotionally,”
he said.
Haylock said Thanks Foundation
exists to share the power of
continuously saying thanks.
“Thanks Foundation
creates opportunities for
young people of all abilities to
build stories collectively and
individually, intentionally
focusing on their mental health
and well-being, while having
fun,” said Haylock.
Serial volunteer says it’s all about people
• By Emily Moorhouse
A FULL-TIME worker who
juggles five volunteer roles says
it’s all about helping others.
Sanjeewa Thanushka, who
goes by the name AK, moved
here from Dubai 15 years ago,
although he is originally from Sri
Lanka.
He came to New Zealand to
study specialisation in retail
management before becoming
a full-time assistant manager at
Look Sharp.
Back in Dubai, AK worked
long hours so when he arrived
here he was surprised at how
much spare time he had, in spite
of working five days a week.
So he decided to volunteer on
his days off, starting at Community
Patrols of New Zealand. He
now volunteers for Red Cross,
The Salvation Army, Age Concern
and Gap Filler.
“I believe time is really precious,
this time will never come
back to you,” he said. “I love to
work with people, I am a people
oriented person. I don’t accept
money or anything. I do it for
free but I do the good thing, the
right thing.”
AK, of Sydenham, has been
separated from his wife and
daughter for more than three
years now due to border restrictions.
They are in Sri Lanka, and
he said the volunteer work has
helped him with missing them.
“It’s really tough you know, so
I have to keep my mind [busy]
PATROL: AK with City Park’s CPNZ police liasion officer Senior Constable John Way.
you know, have to have the
proper mindset to work.”
AK joined the Christchurch
City Park Patrollers three years
ago and has since developed a
simplified “in car” communication
system to make recording
and reporting to the police
easier.
Last year he was learning
about the patrollers’ reporting
structure when he thought to
himself the system could not
only be simplified to make it
easier to operate, but it could also
be cheaper. It would just be a task
that took a lot of time.
So AK took it upon himself
to organise a meeting with the
developers of the current system
and propose his idea.
“I thought okay I can do it, I
just took the risk and asked them
if it was okay,” he said.
Once the test runs were done,
AK’s new system was put in
place and has saved the patrollers
a lot of time and money, said
City Park CPNZ treasurer John
Hammond.
“That’s made things a lot easier
for us because we used to write
in the car and when you’re writing
in the car you can imagine
there’s a whole lot of scribbles,”
Hammond said. “So he managed
to streamline that for us so it can
be read.”
Aside from being a “wiz” with
IT, Hammond said AK was a
great person to be around.
“He’s an awesome guy, he
would do anything for you. It’s
just the sort of guy he is, he’s
very generous with his time,”
Hammond said. “He’s constantly
always very reliable for patrol,
I don’t think he’s ever missed a
night with us.”
City Park CPNZ acting chairwoman
Lynda Cameron also
praised AK for the work he’s
done with the patrollers.
“He’s our observer and he’s
good at it, he often sees things
that I don’t see when we’re driving
around,” Cameron said.
“He’s so helpful and he knows
so much about IT and just about
people, he understands people
which is great. He’s just lovely to
have around.”
AK said volunteering is a way
of sharing knowledge with others
as well as getting involved
with your community.
“I feel if you can contribute
then it will be very helpful and
taking off the burden from
someone else.”
HOME & HEATING
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when it
comes to choosing the perfect heat pump or
air conditioning system for their home or
office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home
both in Winter and Summer. This can be
achieved by using ducted systems or multi
systems and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community
Services Card, a SuperGold combo card or
who live in a low-income area as determined
by deciles 8-10 on the New Zealand
Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
it’s time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
What makes a great
Heat Transfer System?
There are a number of Heat Transfer
systems on the market. Smooth-Air
ventilation specialists offer a range of HTU
Heat Transfer Units with carefully selected
components to optimise the system:
They use insulated duct to transfer the
heated air with as little heat loss as possible.
The fan moves sufficient air for the distance
and number of rooms, without being noisy.
The diffusers send the heat to the floor,
not to skim the across the ceilings. All
components are good quality - designed to
operate for years without problems.
Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range
of options: One to four rooms, with or
without thermostat and with a choice
of grilles and diffusers. HTUs improve
energy efficiency in your house, as you
are using excess heat. They have low
power consumption - only 80watts for
the three room system. Circulating air
through the house also reduces the risk
of damp.
You can also choose the HTU
version with downjet diffusers, which
throw the warm air downwards to the
floor. These downjet diffusers can also
be adjusted to regulate which room
receives the most warm air.
An average size living room requires
2-4 kw of heating, yet appliances such
as log burners generate heat in the
region of 10 -20kw. This leaves an
excess of 8 -16kw of heat which sits at
high level in the heated room, usually
above door level.
Heat transfer units work best where
very hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer
near the ceiling. So heat pumps, which
circulate warm air around the room with
no layering, are not suitable as a heat source
by themselves. However, if you have both
log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer
systems with thermostat can work very
well: The heat pump stops operating once
the heat from the fire has heated the room,
and the heat transfer kicks in above this
point, once there is a layer of hot air at the
ceiling.
The Ihutai-Estuary and Coastal
Stormwater Management Plan
A stormwater management plan sets out the ways
in which Christchurch City Council will meet the
requirements of its stormwater resource consent,
which was granted by Environment Canterbury
in 2019 – the Comprehensive Stormwater
Network Discharge Consent (CSNDC). Its purpose
is to improve surface and groundwater quality
and address problems caused by the nature
of stormwater discharged into waterways. It
promotes water quality improvements over time
in order to meet targets in the Land and Water
Regional Plan. This is one of seven plans being
prepared over the period 2020 to 2023.
We want to hear your thoughts on the Ihutai-
Estuary and Coastal Stormwater Management
Plan. Feedback is open from 28 February to 26
April 2022. You can read the plan and have your
Hearing Care How It Should Be
When it comes to caring for your senses, you want to know you are
in good hands. So, when you, or your loved ones start to have
problems with your ears or your hearing, there is a team of
passionate professionals who will give you the very best service.
Hear Again have been delighting the Hornby community from their
bright, purpose made clinic at the Hub, for the past 4 years.
Offering everything from Ear Wax removal by gentle microsuction,
through to the fitting of the most advanced hearing aids offered by
the world’s leading manufacturers, the team are happy to help.
Neil Hardisty, NZAS
Audiometrist, has been
expertly overcoming hearing
difficulties for residents of
Christchurch since 2009.
Neil is frequently praised for
his limitless patience,
wonderful caring nature and
ability to solve all manner of
hearing and hearing aid
problems. Neil is never
satisfied until you are.
In New Zealand, one in six people have some degree of hearing
difficulty. Over the age of 60, more than half the population are
living with a significant hearing reduction. This invisible condition
can be incredibly frustrating, as conversation on a one to one basis
can be ok, but social situations become very uncomfortable indeed.
Background noise can make conversation almost impossible to
follow causing some sufferers to remove themselves from the
conversation, or even avoid going to the social function completely.
Other early signs of hearing difficulty are a creeping up of the
volume control on the TV, frequently asking family and friends to
repeat themselves, or accusing people of mumbling when they
speak. With hearing loss recently being linked to the early onset of
Dementia in studies throughout the world, these early signs are not
to be ignored. Early detection of this is paramount.
Hear Again are the highest rated hearing clinic in Christchurch,
offering FREE no obligation 30 minute initial hearing assessments.
If you, or any of your loved ones have noticed any difficulties with
your hearing, this can be quickly and professionally checked for you
at The Hub, 418 Main South Road, Hornby. If you already have
hearing aids from any manufacturer, they will give them a FREE
clean and check to ensure they are in tip top condition for you.
Are your ears feeling blocked?
Ear wax and other blockages can be safely and easily
removed using the very latest microsuction techniques.
Ear wax production varies hugely from person to person,
some ears keep themselves very clean, but others are
like little wax production factories!
For only $50 you can get quick, instant relief and
get back to enjoying the sounds of life again!
Wow, need help quickly, and Hear Again provided quick service. The team were very friendly and Neil
was very conscientious. Great job!
Happy to recommend. Friendly, professional service from Neil and team. Will definitely be returning
for any future requirements.
I can HEAR AGAIN ! I popped in to see Neil and his team on the way to the pharmacy to get an ear
cleaning product as it sounded like I was underwater. The Hear Again team saw me on the spot as
they had a free appointment. Ears 100% clear. Many many thanks Neil, will see (and hear) you again
