Kaikoura’s slow expansion is continuing,<br />
despite the challenges of Covid19.<br />
The town’stwo mainresidentialsubdivisionshave<br />
survived avariable property<br />
market and the 2016 earthquakeand areset<br />
to expand,despitethe challenges of Covid<br />
19.<br />
Seaview Kaikoura was established in<br />
2007,withplansfor 153sections overthree<br />
stages,whilethe much larger Ocean Ridge<br />
development was established soonafter.<br />

Cretney saysstages oneand two havesold<br />
out and construction of stage three is set to<br />
get under way later this year.<br />
‘‘We had hoped to get away in <strong>March</strong>,but<br />
we had to go for variation in the consent,<br />
whichwe’venow got, so we will get back<br />
into it in the spring.’’<br />
Seaview Kaikoura plans to engage local<br />
tradespeople in theconstruction of 53 new<br />
sections, whichare between 800 and 900<br />
square metres, while the local Kaikoura<br />
Harcourtsoffice is the agent for property<br />
sales.<br />
‘‘There’s been quite abit of interest,so<br />
let’shope that continues. We’ve presold<br />
two sectionsalready,’’ Mr Cretney says.<br />
‘‘A few people havebeen waiting for<br />
more sections to come on the market, so<br />
hopefully we will pick up afew local people<br />
in stagethree.’’<br />
The bulk of the buyersinthe first two<br />
stages were locals,including amix of<br />
retiredfarmers movinginto town, other<br />
Ocean views ... The Seaview Kaikoura subdivision has stunning coastal views.<br />
localretirees and localfamilies working in<br />
the town.<br />
Therewas also asmall percentageof‘‘out<br />
of towners’’,including those buyingholiday<br />
homes.<br />
Seaview Kaikoura is located in Hastings<br />
Street, opposite the Kaikourahospital,<br />
whichis<strong>10</strong>minutes walk from the town<br />
centre and the sections haveviewsofSouth<br />
Bay and the racecourse, Mr Cretneysays.<br />
