Passed State #6
COS Indiana Vision: To build a strong, engaged army of self-governing activists.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST PASSED STATE!
WEST VIRGINIA #18
West Virginia passed the resolution in both the house and senate in a single day! Thanks
to COS Volunteers showing up in a valiant effort in West Virginia, we now have our 18th
passed state for a Convention of States! Only 16 states to go! Details are listed below in an
official COS statement...
Yesterday morning, the West Virginia State House passed the Convention of States
Resolution on an overwhelming – and bipartisan! – 77-19-4 vote. Then, less than one hour
later, the state Senate passed the Resolution on a voice vote, making West Virginia the 18th
state in history to pass the Convention of States Resolution!
“Today we made history," said West Virginia Delegate Del. Chris Pritt. "The West Virginia
House of Delegates sent a clear message that an ever-expanding federal government is
unacceptable."
Del. Riley Keaton, our lead sponsor, agreed with his colleague. “I’m very pleased to lead
sponsor the Convention of States Resolution in West Virginia and see it finally pass," he
said. "West Virginians know that the hour is late for our republic if the people don’t reassert
their God-Given right to self-governance. The Convention of States will do exactly that."
Our legislative sponsors were amazing, and we couldn't have secured this victory without
their support. But most of the credit, as always, goes to our amazing team of volunteers in
West Virginia. Those patriots have worked tirelessly over the last several years to pass the
Convention of States Resolution. They faced setbacks, especially in the house, but they
never gave up.
"I’m so proud of the grassroots, and the members of the West Virginia House and Senate,
who today made history by making their state the 18th to pass the Convention of States
Resolution," said Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler. "Today, the
Mountaineers stepped up and sent a strong message to Washington, D.C., that the people
are coming and we’re going to take our power back."
Their relentless commitment to liberty should inspire the entire country. These patriots
understand that only a Convention of States can stop the runaway train in Washington,
and their hard work and determination put our country one step closer to liberty.
IDEALS OF SELF–GOVERNANCE
WORDS OF WISDOM
"Leadership is vital to progress. Wisdom, insight, and foresight are indispensable to the
endurance of nations. Civilization is never really jeopardized until able leadership begins
to vanish. And the quantity of such wise leadership has never exceeded one per cent of
the population." – The Urantia Book
LEGISLATIVE REPORT
by COS Indiana Legislative Liaison Marty Woods
HB1134 – passed. Amendment 20 was withdrawn and new Amendment 34 was put up in its
place and it quickly restored some of the original content of the bill that COS supported. A
new version of HB1134 passed and will be going to the Senate floor for a vote. It ended up
much better than it would have been with amendment 20, but was not quite as good as we
had hoped.
HB1041 – passed. Gender definition in sports defines that a male at birth cannot participate
in women's sports in Indiana.
Marty encourages everyone to build strong relationships with their legislators.

ONE NATION UNDER GOD
Aspirational Goal: To bring a Political and Spiritual Awakening to America.
PRAYING FOR PEACE AND OUR FUTURE
Lately, we’ve reached beyond the 50% mark – 18 of 34 states have applied to get the
Convention of States scheduled. The plan that Michael Farris originally started and so many
others have joined is coming closer to fruition every day.
We aren’t there yet, but we know that our goal is good. We are praying about it and working
on it for worthy reasons – not for evil. No one in COS is doing this for personal gain, or for
more power – we are doing it for freedom. Our desire is for all to recognize that freedoms
come from God, not from government, and to return the US to the basic freedoms we were
given. Our forefathers started this country by praying to the Lord for wisdom and success,
just like we do, and He granted that to the United States. Americans have achieved much –
saved millions from evil forces, produced food that feeds millions around the world, and
devised new methods and technology that help millions rise above the poverty they were
born into.
Let’s remember that when America is free, the rest of the world looks at us as that shining
beacon on the hill. They see our freedom, our success, our generosity, and our reverence for
God. It makes them want the same things, and brings glory to Him.
We know what scripture says in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans that I have for you,’
declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” I
think we are seeing that unfold. Let’s keep praying and honoring God and watch what He
will do in the United States.
Join with our powerful Convention of States family in giving thanks, and wishing a
blessed new year of health, peace and joy for everyone. Please join us in praying for
those listed below who are in need of prayers, and for their families:
Michael Baugh – in need of prayers for restoration of relationships.
Our Friends in Ukraine – in need of prayers for peace and humanitarian help.
Barb Bieberich – in need of prayers for healing (cancer diagnosis).
Jennifer Heidenreich – in need of prayers for healing (cancer treatment).
David Trombly – in need of prayers for healing (cancer treatment).
Fred Tiedge – in need of prayers for comfort and healing (memory care).
Please email COS Indiana State Prayer Contact Tim Heidenreich with your prayer requests
CITIZENSHIP and THINKING
An Ordinary Citizen | March 4, 2022
It’s hard to forget the image. Matthew Banta, Antifa’s Commander Red, is crying and lying in a
fetal position on the ground. Why? Because he was scared. His actions had consequences and he
was actually arrested. Caught up in the rhetoric of the BLM/Antifa web, Matthew was a Millennial
who did not know how to reason. How to say "what if?" He had no Plan B. Matthew could not
think for himself.
One over-riding and undergirding tenet of this experiment we call America is that freedom of
thought is the key to wisdom. The right to express those thoughts without fear of reprisal is the
key to a free society. The lack of that right is the key to tyranny. This tenet is the basis for the First
Amendment to the Constitution which guarantees us the right to many things.
But that guarantee comes with an obligation of ownership. Citizens each own a piece of this
country. As a result, we each have a responsibility to carefully identify whether or not we agree
with and support what our country is doing. Not what we hope it’s doing, but what is actually
going on. That’s because the keeping of this republic is a job that belongs to all of us.
But the ability to carefully analyze the actions of our government requires a skill that many of us
have not mastered. That skill is critical thinking and we ignore it at our peril.
What Is Critical Thinking?
First off, critical thinking is not common sense, though the result may seem that way. It is not
intuition, though intuition may start the process. It is not a belief, though it may be overly
influenced by beliefs if we’re not careful.
Critical thinking is a practice, a habit, a mental muscle that we must shape and tone…not just
once, but frequently. Further, we must model it and teach it to our children. No other person, no
government, no institution is going to do that.
The Basics
While critical thinking began getting a lot of play in the 20th century, it’s actually a concept that’s
about 2500 years old. It is a disciplined intellectual process that:
involves conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, or evaluating information.
obtains (or generates) information by observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or
communication.
is based on the intellectual values of clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance,
sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.

Combining these three sets of characteristics, critical thinking becomes a guide to belief and
action.
To boil it down, critical thinking has two major components: skills and habits. The skills involve
the way we obtain and process information, and the habit becomes our commitment to practicing
those skills frequently.
Conversely, it is not about:
information for information’s sake.
having the skills without practicing them.
using the skills without considering the potential consequences.
Getting Closer to the Truth
Remember that this skill is all about the evaluation and application of information as a guide to
belief and action. But information is not always what it appears to be on the surface.
Look at these headlines about the Texas GOP party concerning the teaching of critical thinking in
the public schools.
Texas GOP Rejects Critical Thinking – Really – Washington Post
No More Critical Thinking in Schools! – Education Week
The Terrifying Republican Platform – Forbes magazine
From these headlines, you might believe the Texas legislature was banning teaching public school
children how to think critically. However, if we were to check the Austin Chronicle, we would find
that the articles in the preceding list related to a plank in the GOP platform. Digging deeper we can
visit the GOP website and read the actual party platform. Here’s the real truth – the plank in the
party platform reads like this:
"Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
(values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of
Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and
have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority."
Not exactly the same thing, is it? The plank in the platform is actually about a method of
teaching, Outcome Based Education, and the fear that Outcome Based Education undermines
parental authority. But you wouldn’t know it by the headlines.
Tips for Researching Information
So thinking critically requires us to find information that gets us as close to the source as possible.
Here are some tips for doing that:
Don’t rely on a limited number of sources no matter how noble their intentions.
Start to dig. Google can be a starting point, as long as you remember that the first few
references (or pages of references) from Google will be those that most align with Google’s
algorithms.
Look to find conflicting views of the same information.
Research the authors of reviews or articles to determine their biases, to help you
understand what is really being said.
Remember that sometimes even though the source is openly biased (e.g., the Austin
Chronicle is left-leaning), you may find a clue that will lead you closer to the truth.
SIFT. LogicCheck.net suggests the SIFT method as a kind of mantra to help kickstart your
research.
The SIFT method has these four steps:
S – Stop – don’t accept or reject, check it out.
I – Investigate – this is the initial research process.
F – Find better coverage – check other sources, widen your reach.
T – Trace claims, quotes, and media to the original context. In other words, what was really
said, and in what context was it said.
Why Do We Care?

Why Do We Care?
We are becoming a country of people who do not know how to think. Those who fall into this trap
are not able to foresee potential consequences of their actions. They have not reasoned through
why they believe what they say they believe. Nor do they know how to question. They, like
Matthew Banta, are vulnerable – and, by extension, so is America.
Most of us are products of American public education. Since sometime in the 60s, it has not been
in the interest of public education to encourage true critical thinking. Such thought often flies in
the face of the ideology that permeates our schools and thus, must be discouraged. The lack of
critical thinking practice shows up clearly in graduate level courses, particularly in those fields
(e.g., medicine or law) where students have to think critically.
In an article titled, Undoing the Dis-Education of Millennials, one law school professor summed up
the situation this way: “For several years now my students have been mostly Millennials.
Contrary to stereotype, I have found that the vast majority of them want to learn. But true to
stereotype, I increasingly find that most of them cannot think, don’t know very much, and are
enslaved to their appetites and feelings. Their minds are held hostage in a prison fashioned by
elite culture and their undergraduate professors.”
Some Next Steps
There is certainly no dearth of information to research. Our world is awash in it. But the continual
bombarding of news noise leaves us feeling wrung out. Exhausted. And consuming
unsubstantiated news is like gorging on snack food. We eat it, but it isn’t good for us.
So how do we turn things around? How do we become a people that can logically and respectfully
question authority and accepted values without prejudging or fearing the answers? How do we
value and support the acts of questioning and evaluating information?
We practice.
Here are some suggestions for growing and sharpening our thinking skills:
Identify those sources whose views you usually accept without question. Question them.
Look for evidence. What proof exists to support what is being said.
Question respectfully, and teach your children to do the same thing. Make that a family
habit.
Question things that your children see often – like ads on television or the Internet. Ask
them what the advertiser wants them to do. What images are being used to do so?
Study critical thinking. Start with the resources listed at the end of this article.
Remember that all of us have blind spots – what are yours?
Have clearly stated reasons for what you do, and what you don’t do. Teach your children to
do the same.
Think very carefully before you vote – in the primaries, and in the general election.
Research the candidates. What have they done and what do they stand for?
Practice open and dispassionate discussions of problems around the home. Let your
children see you find practical, workable solutions to those problems…and evaluate or
revise those solutions if needed.
Learn to step back, take a wider – yet deeper – view.
Apply the ability to think critically to every arena of state and local politics from PTA to
school board, city council to mayor, county commissioner to state legislature. They all
matter.
The Bottom Line
America is a great country, but in the course of history such countries come and go. This doesn’t
usually happen in one great flash, but is more likely a fading by degrees.
Critical thinking is not just a nice idea or an intellectual exercise. The obligation to analyze where
we are, what we are facing, and determine what we will do about it, is upon us.
So whether America flourishes or fades is in some part a result of our individual willingness to
meet, face, and act upon that obligation.

DETACHED FROM REALITY?
Insanity is Repeating the Same Mistakes and Expecting Different Results
by Susan Lyon
A lovely young couple we know had to flee from their home in Kyiv last week with their 3 small
children because Russian forces were nearing the city and danger was imminent. My husband
and I are terribly concerned for their safety, heartsick over the hopeless situation they face,
limited on what we can do to help them from a distance, and just left with the feeling that this is
such an unnecessary tragedy and wondering WHY? Why now? What happened? How could we be
flirting with global peace for the first brief moment in history just a little over a year ago, and now
we are straight back to war, death, and the possibility of nuclear destruction? What blew us out of
the water? How did the balance we had painstakingly nurtured on this planet for the past few
years become destabilized?
A video we received from our young friend, an idealistic, gentle, and soft-spoken
Ukrainian gentlemen, expressing his faith and hope for eternal life brought tears to my eyes, and
at the same time, it struck such a chord of disgust in my heart for the aggressors who would bring
such horror to others, and for the world conditions which allowed it to happen. How could I not
put myself in Aton's shoes, or that of his beautiful wife Ekaterina? How could I feel anything but
compassion as they struggle to keep their children safe as they leave their home behind? They
were blessed to be able to leave because they had 3 children, but depending on their current
location, he may still have to fight.
Striking Home
How have we been affected in the United States? I have to believe that most people – maybe 99% –
are like me and wish for a peaceful world. I'm sure they are aghast and heartsick. I hear many
people making suggestions as to what we could do to help the people of Ukraine. Some are actively
donating funds for humanitarian relief, and the government has approved for some weapons to
be sent, but I still shake my head and wonder WHY did the people of Ukraine have to go through
this? Their country is being carpet-bombed and some cities are already in shambles. They have
lost power in many places and the weather is brutally cold. Many who live in cities don't own
cars, so they had to flee on foot.
How does this have anything at all to do with COS you might ask? How does it relate to
government overreach, fiscal irresponsibility, or corruption in the United States – all things we are
trying to correct with a Convention of States? I believe it does, because I believe when we have a
good stable government, that also stabilizes the entire world. Are we responsible for what is
happening in Ukraine? Could it have been avoided? I believe it could have been. That's the most
heartbreaking truth of all. Our choices matter. Our votes matter. Substantive research on key
issues before we vote matters. As "An Ordinary Citizen" explained in an earlier op/ed called
Citizenship and Thinking, critical thinking matters, and we have seen that key breakdowns and
careless choices in America can bring the world to its knees in the blink of an eye.
You might ask, but how can my choices affect the people of Ukraine? What did I do? How am I to
blame?
It's complicated, but not rocket science for the normal American citizen to figure out that our
economy and foreign policy directly affects the rest of the world. We control the international
currency and market. With that goes a certain responsibility to provide stability. With our votes
we determine who makes the important decisions that drive our economy and foreign policy.
Leading with strength stabilizes the world, because it instills confidence in the future, in the
economy, and in the hope for a better world. We won't get into election integrity here, but my
feeling is that the 2020 election was a turning point in the future of our country and the world.
Not only did the current administration present itself to be weak and vulnerable, but deals were
struck that directly compromised the welfare of Americans and the Ukraine people.
Stopping our oil and natural gas production while choosing to purchase energy from Russia was
the single most dangerous decision that has been made in recent history. Not only was it
dangerous, it took the country back to a situation of insecurity, which qualifies as insanity. Giving
up our energy independence guaranteed that the path of peace we were traveling would be carpet
bombed and scorched. It is no longer passable. This decision was not made without someone
profiting. The United States certainly does not profit from the decision. The American people are

profiting. The United States certainly does not profit from the decision. The American people are
paying dearly for the decision, and the Ukranian people are now paying for the decision with their
homes, their lives, and their blood. Who is profiting?
Confidence is at an all-time low in the United States. Every single marker of peace and prosperity
is suffering under the burden of this congress and administration. Dark money has financed the
campaigns of district attorneys who do the bidding of the donors, the 1% who hide in the
shadows, wishing to further destabilize America on Main Street by releasing dangerous criminals
who threaten us with anarchy, and likely they are profiting from war as well. Their
influence has infiltrated our justice system, while attacking our defenders such as the police and
military – another check and balance of our republic has been violated.
I'm not sure 99% understand the gravity of their vote, or the importance of their involvement in
preserving our republic. History proves that our republic not only can be lost, but the odds are that
it will be lost. We are making the same unfortunate errors that ancient Rome made – the first
attempt at a republic. Individually we must become the torchbearers of a future age, with our
values lighting the way for civilization, or we must be prepared to face the possibility of
becoming a subject nation to a greater power aggressive enough to take it from us. I'm not sure
the 99% know how to achieve a peaceful world without taking on the 1%. It will require much
wisdom and discernment to achieve success, but the world will be the beneficiary through
restored peace and prosperity. There has always been an understanding between citizens that the
majority rules because the common sense, logic, and wisdom of the group can be counted upon to
reflect what is best for society as a whole. Fair and honest elections always guaranteed that.
Today, American preoccupation, indifference, complacency, and lack of education has created a
monster. Corruption abounds. The tipping point has come where those who are unwise are
becoming the majority. So few are real thinkers. The power of the lobby has resulted in a group of
modern legislators and government execs who are attempting to please every lobbyist who ever
donated a dollar to place them in office, and appease every victim that has ever lived. They are
also concerned about making their own fortunes while they are in a position to do so. Instead of
doing the one job that they are supposed to do – protect society as a whole – they make hay while
the sun shines and have hijacked our republic. By their poor choices they have placed our country
in a position of weakness and vulnerability.
Have you noticed how pursuing certain policies always bring us back to the same undesirable
results? War. Poverty. Each election cycle we are promised a brighter new day and hope for
tomorrow, but mostly, tomorrow never comes. You have to question – why? We are told the
problems are impossible to solve. We have to live with it, especially if we are patriots it's our duty
and obligation to suffer for the good of everyone. What it really comes down to is we are suffering
to support the 1% who are hiding in the shadows and plotting against us. Why do they do it? The
root of all evil, of course. Wealth and Power. Somebody is making money while the rest of us
suffer. Somebody is always profiting from all of the pain. We think we understand what is going
on because we don't really want to see the darkness that lies beneath the surface. We don't want
to imagine that the 1% that have so much would plot against us. Why would they do that? Faithful
people have an even harder time understanding it, and honestly they are the last to acknowledge
the truth, because they are the most loving and forgiving. People the world over are generally
good, even if lacking in wise leadership. It falls upon us to make a change and bring the world
back on track to peace. We can no longer allow the human cost of war.
What Can We Do?
The time has come for us to wake up. Corruption is preventing us from pursuing our dream
as Americans. We are causing pain in the rest of the world by abandoning our post as
vigilant citizens. We must do things that we have not done for a long time, such as:
Only choose leaders who are people of integrity and full of wisdom.

Only choose leaders who are people of integrity and full of wisdom.
Educate yourself in the US Constitution, and your state constitution.
Take the time to seek the truth and think for yourselves.
Recognize failed policies. Cause and effect – learn from mistakes.
Recognize and repeat successful policies. If it's not broken don't fix it.
Know your history well so mistakes are never repeated.
Stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before. Ask a trusted mentor.
Test the news for truth, especially when it is labeled as having been debunked.
Let your voice be heard. Alert your family and friends to mis/dis/mal information.
Be willing to fight for our freedom and our republic.
Make sure your young people are well-versed in their role as good citizens.
Question the hidden agenda behind any government activities.
Closely follow what's happening in legislature. Let them know you're watching!
Keep track of how your representatives vote on every issue.
Give up blind trust in your representatives. Hold them accountable.
Have a long memory. Never forget when a politician promises but does not deliver.
If representatives fall short, make sure everyone knows about it, including them.
Make sure local and federal budgets are adhered to. It's YOUR money.
Never let a ballot for any office go unchallenged in your county.
Be aware of deadlines that could prevent a candidate from a place on the ballot.
Be discerning. Policy changes always rear their ugly heads just before an election.
Be involved in your local government and school board.
Work your local election precinct as a judge or inspector.
Make sure your county election is compliant with all state law.
Be just, live with kindness, and walk humbly with your God. Be a good leader.
Never miss an opportunity to vote. The world is counting on you to do it right.
