Total clean sweep
of titles in grade
• From page 1
“People like that come probably
once a decade, once a generation.
She’s certainly opened a lot of
eyes.”
Fellow coach Hamish Ferguson
said it was very unusual to see a
total clean sweep of the grade.
“Her performance is extraordinary,
especially for somebody
who only started track cycling
in our junior development programme
a few months ago.”
This was especially impressive
given that most of her experience
was on outdoor tracks, he said.
“She’s been training hard and
racing hard at Denton Park, but
to know how to race tactically on
the indoor velodrome
is amazing.”
Shaylah opened a
stunning campaign in
the under-15 division
on day one with victories
in the elimination
race and 500m time
trial.
She also topped
the podium in the
points race, derby and
scratch race before
combining with Lizzy
Thomson to claim the
500m team sprint title
during last Saturday’s
final day of competition.
Her dad, Laurie,
who accompanied Shaylah to
nationals, said it was amazing to
watch her do so well.
“The first one was a bit of a
shock, and she just followed on
from it,” he said.
Although she had only been
track cycling for a short time,
she had been mountain biking
with her father from a young
age, Shaylah told Nor’West News
earlier this month.
Her father also recalled taking
her on bike rides when she was
small, in which she struggled to
keep up.
“Then she got older and she just
took off, now I can’t keep up with
her.”
Ministry initially open to some funding
• From page 1
The ministry initially indicated
that it was open to funding some
costs towards the path although
it was not technically in its remit.
As a public path, the provision
of a redeveloped path would fall
to the city council.
The ministry consulted the
schools, the city council and the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board last year,
Fowler said.
“Following these discussions
and having considered the likely
investment needed and management
challenges of an accessway
alongside these operational
schools as well as the potential
benefits, we have decided not to
pursue the proposal further.”
City council head of transport
and waste management Lynette
Ellis said $180,000 had
been allocated for the
lighting of the path next
year in the draft Annual
Plan, currently out for
consultation.
This was what it had
been asked to fund, she
said.
However, this was on the assumption
the path would be paid
for by the ministry.
The pathway was used by area
residents as well as those walking,
cycling, and riding scooters
to school, Ellis said.
“Cobham Intermediate has
Bridget
Williams
had a relatively high level of active
transport . . . in 2020 40 per
cent of its students either cycled
or scootered to school.”
Community Board chairwoman
Bridget Williams
said the board’s position on
the issue was based on community
feedback.
“What we’ve been hearing
is some of the schools
don’t actually want the
path,” she said.
“For a cost of that amount, we
would hate to say this is something
we could deliver when
financially, the council can’t.”
However, the board would look
at other options if there was a
demand for it.
Turn everyday
essentials into
SuperGold
Since coming into Government,
Labour has worked hard to support
low and middle income Kiwis and
we’ve just taken another step to make
things a bit easier.
The war in Ukraine has caused a
global energy crisis that is being felt
across New Zealand and I know this
price spike has been tough for many
of us here in Christchurch.
While we can’t control global events,
we can control the support we
provide New Zealanders.
That’s why we’ve cut petrol excise
duty by 25 cents a litre for three
months and we’ll shortly announce
equivalent reductions in road user
charges.
Half-price public transport fares will
also be in place for three months,
making getting to and from work
more affordable for many and giving
a great alternative to filling up the
tank.
These initiatives are part of our
broader programme to reduce
cost pressures, which includes a
suite of changes that will lift the
incomes of many Kiwis from 1
April. Improvements to Working for
Families alone will see around 60% of
all families better off by an average of
$20 per week. Students, seniors, and
minimum wage workers will also see
an income boost. The Winter Energy
Payment will also re-start on 1 May
to help with heating costs over winter.
There’s no silver bullet for the current
cost-of-living pressures, but these
measures will make a difference. They
build on actions we’ve taken since
2017 to ensure Kiwi families have
more in their pocket, like the family
tax credit, free school lunches, and
cheaper doctors’ fees.
We’re committed to securing a
recovery from COVID that leaves no
one behind – and supporting families
with the cost of living is just one way
we’re making that a reality.
