Borough to sell naming rights
for Mabel Kay Senior Center
The Haddon Fortnightly

“All the
news that
will fit.”
Serving Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, and Haddon Township NJ • April 1, 2022 • #001
HADDONFIELD – Under the guidance of a new director
for senior services, the Mabel Kay Senior Center on Walnut
Street has become a hive of activity.
But what is clearly a good thing has presented the
Borough with a challenge: How to fund the many new
activities and programs the Center plans to offer.
A solution presented itself sooner than expected when
the Mary Kay cosmetics company offered to purchase
naming rights to the building. Terms of the deal have
not been disclosed, but it is known that they include a
provision that the building – originally the Grange Hall, and
still used by Haddon Grange #38 for its monthly meetings –
will be painted the Mary Kay
company’s signature pink.
The question of whether
the company’s iconic color
should be classified as a
“sign” that requires formal
approval will come before
the Historic Preservation
Commission next month.
A rumor that the company
will provide a pink Cadillac
to take seniors on road trips
has not been confirmed.
It is expected, however,
that Mary Kay will provide
a special discount to
local seniors who enter
the code ‘haddon’ when
making purchases from the
company’s online catalog.
The Commissioners are
scheduled to review bids for
painting later this month.

Library brings back card catalog
HEIGHTS – Now that QR codes have become
ubiquitous – thank you, Covid-19 – the Haddon
Heights Public Library has decided to replace almost
all of its “holdings” – books, magazines, CDs, DVDs,
etc. – with cards imprinted with QR codes.
The 3” x 5” cards will be kept in a bank of drawers
– the “card catalog” – near the circulation desk.
There will be three cards for each item, filed
alphabetically: one for title, one for author, and one
for subject. With a Dewey number, of course.
Library patrons will simply “let their fingers do
the walking,” tickling through the cards until
they find the one they want.
Then, by scanning the QR code with
their phone, they will have instant
access to the book, magazine, video,
or music they desire. No need to
check anything out. No late fees!
“This will save an enormous
amount of shelf space,” a Library
spokesperson said. “For example,
War and Peace is two-and-a-half
inches thick. A catalog card is
maybe one hundredth of an inch
thick. That’s a 25,000% saving!”
891.733
1942
INNOVATION: Banks of wooden
drawers will hold thousands of
cards, filed alphabetically. To
download the book of their choice
to their phone, Library patrons
simply scan the QR code on a
card. Fast, free, and space-saving!
War and peace
Tolstoy, Leo
War and peace
New York: Simon & Schuster
1361p; 8.5x6x2.5in. 3lb.
1. War--Fiction.
2. Epic/Saga--Fiction.
When asked what the Library will do with its newfound
shelf space, the spokesperson said that two uses are being considered.
Some shelves could be converted to a mini museum where books, magazines,
and newspapers would be displayed. The Library would host visits by school
children, during which the students would learn about artifacts that members
of previous generations used to communicate ideas, opinions, and information.
Others would be converted to secure Amazon lockers for use by library
patrons who are nervous about having packages left on their doorsteps.
Reader Poll:
According to the US Census
Bureau, Haddonfield’s population
increased a whopping 8.25%
from 2010 to 2020 (11,593 to
12,550 = 957).
Possible reasons?
• The 2010 count was low.
• The 2020 count was high.
• The 2020 number is for the
08033 ZIP (which includes parts
of Barrington and Township).
• The 2020 number was inflated
by the inclusion of college kids,
back at home on Census Day
(April 1), mid-pandemic.
• Political rigging of the 2020
count, to enable an increase in
the number of Commissioners
from 3 to 5 (permitted when the
population exceeds
12,000).

A literacy test for freshomores
TOWNSHIP – Starting in September, incoming
freshomores (formerly “freshmen”) at Haddon
Township High School will be required to pass a
literacy test designed to ascertain their proficiency
in the basics of English grammar.
What types of questions will be on the test?
Here’s one example:
John and his friend Chris went to the Shore on
Saturday. At school on Monday, a classmate asks John
what he and his friend did on the weekend.
Which of the following responses is both culturally
sensitive and grammatically correct?
1. Me and Chris went to the shore.
2. She and I went to the shore.
3. Me and her went to the shore.
4. They and me went to the shore.
5. Chris and I went to the shore.
6. Me and they went to the shore.
7. All of the above.
8. None of the above.
9. Last weekend? I can’t remember back that far.

The First Word
New times = a new name:
The Haddon Fortnightly
By David Hunter, Publisher
If the Covid-19 pandemic taught us anything, it was the importance of being able to
adapt to changing circumstances.
During the past two years, our downtown gave us a number of examples of
businesses that did adapt ... and didn’t. King’s Road Brewing Company is one.
The owners moved quickly and creatively, and managed not only to stabilize their
Haddonfield operation, but to open a second location, in Medford, in late 2021.
Julie Beddingfield, the owner of Inkwood Books – and the 2022 Citizen of the Year
– was just getting ready to move her store to new and larger premises when Covid
struck. Hit first by a state-mandated lock-down and then by the reluctance of cautious
shoppers to venture forth, Julie and her staff developed myriad ways to keep their
customers engaged, reading, and buying books.
Publishers of newspapers must take four factors into account whenever they find
they need to adapt to changing times: 1. Audience. 2. Content. 3. Frequency. 4. Title.
Success or failure depends on their ability to get all four right.
When we launched What’s On in Haddonfield, in November 1991, we published it
weekly. Since it was a community calendar, we assumed – correctly, as it turned out
– that there would be enough coming events to publicize, weekly. And since we knew
a number of downtown merchants well, and had hired an experienced newspaper ad
rep, we assumed – incorrectly, it turned out – that there would be enough advertising
revenue to keep the presses rolling, weekly.
Two problems: First, the country was in the middle of a recession in 1991. (We knew
that, but figured if we could make it through, we’d be well positioned on the other
side.) Second: Advertising tanked immediately after the holidays. (We understand why
now, but we were new to the business then, so that was a painful surprise.)
We kept publishing weekly, but to trim our expenses we stopped mailing townwide.
That didn’t sit well with advertisers. Then, with Valentine’s Day 1992 looming, we
made two key decisions: 1. To resume mailing. 2. To change the frequency of
publication to once every two weeks (or, as we say in Australia, “fortnightly”).
Speaking of Australia … From the 1930s through the ’80s, that country’s most
popular magazine was The Australian Women’s Weekly. One in every five households
subscribed, giving it the highest per-capita penetration of any magazine in the world.
It was also one of the most influential. The Weekly molded readers’ views not only of
motherhood and child-rearing, but of Australian culture generally. It was read by men
almost as loyally as by women, and by all classes (in a relatively egalitarian society).
In 1982, the Weekly shocked the country, and the publishing world, by changing its
frequency to once a month. The publishers cited cost pressures. They brushed aside
concerns that the name no longer reflected the magazine’s frequency of publication.
They calculated – correctly – that the title was embedded in the Australian psyche.
And, prudently, they dismissed The Australian Women’s Monthly out of hand.
Because changing the name of an established publication should not be undertaken
lightly, we thought very carefully about the potential implications of changing the
name of our flagship publication from What’s On Haddonfield to Haddonfield Today.
One thing that made it easier, in 2017, was that we changed the format at the same
time, from tabloid to magazine.
In January 2021, for various reasons (including Covid), we changed our publication
frequency from every two weeks to every four weeks. Then, as the economy
rebounded, we pivoted again, and established a three-weekly schedule in September.
Now, we’ve concluded that it makes sense to publish once every two weeks (or
“fortnightly”), to expand our catchment to include Haddon Heights and Haddon
Township, and to change our name to reflect both frequency and reach.
So today – April 1, 2022 – we introduce you to The Haddon Fortnightly. New name.
Expanded content. Wider circulation. And a renewed dedication to providing the most
complete coverage of coming events in Haddonfield and beyond.

Alumni advocate for ‘Dawgs Woods’
HADDONFIELD – During a recent meeting of the
Alumni Society, a proposal was floated to change
the name of Crows Woods to “Dawgs Woods.”
“Thousands of Memorial High students have
vivid and fond memories of wayward adventures in
Crows Woods,” a spokesperson for the Society said.
“Many spent many hours practicing and playing
on the Crows Woods fields. It just makes sense to
memorialize those memories by changing the name
to one that is much more meaningful.”
The origin on the name “Crows Woods” is not known. A spokesperson for
the Historical Society said it could have been named for an early resident
with the surname of Crow, “Or it’s possible that the area was once home to
a large flock of warm-blooded black vertebrates constituting the class Aves /
‘eIvi z/, characterized by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hardshelled
eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a strong yet
lightweight skeleton.”
The name “Dawgs Woods,” the Alumni Society says, would bestow several
other benefits on the community. “First, the Borough would be able to repeal
the ordinance banning off-leash dogs from the playing fields. You can’t very
well have a place called ‘Dawgs Woods’ and not allow both Dawgs and dogs to
roam free,” she said. And secondly, the perimeter of the fields could be planted
with dogwood trees. “They would look spectacular in the spring, just like the
cherry trees on Chapel Avenue in Cherry Hill.”
The Alumni Society believes that Dawgs Wood could become a huge tourist
attraction. “Instead of the dog days of summer, we could have ‘Dawg Days of
Spring,’ with dogwood trees in full bloom.” Whatever.
Plan ‘B’ for cellphone tower
HADDONFIELD – When plans to erect a 120-foot
tall cell-phone tower at the Borough’s Public Works
facility on Centre Street became widely known, early
in 2021, the reaction from neighbors was fast and
furious: “Not in our back yard!”
More than 600 residents signed a petition, and it
wasn’t long before the Borough scuttled the plan.
The need for better cellphone reception in
Haddonfield remains, however, without any obvious
solution at hand. Until ...
In February, the Borough embarked on an
innovative Dead TREE (Tree Rapid Execution Event)
Program that will see the partial removal of 150
trees in just three months. “Partial” because the
stumps will be left standing for subsequent removal by a contractor.
At least, that was the plan. But then a student at Memorial High School
contacted the Borough with a suggestion: Leave the tree stumps in place and
use them as mini cellphone towers. The feasibility of the suggestion was tested
with ten trial towers throughout the town. The results were impressive. Most
residents in the vicinity of the “tree towers” reported an increase in the number
of bars on their phones from two to four, and in some cases from one to four.
“We are excited about the potential of this plan to not only solve the problem
of poor cellphone service in Haddonfield,” a cellular company spokesperson
said, “but to boost reception to an unexpectedly high level all over town.”
Some 200 “tree towers” will be required, to ensure that all residents receive
the same high level of connectivity. The Borough plans to manufacture and
“plant” about 50 fake tree stumps to supplement the 150 real ones, and will
purchase an extra-large 3-D printer, so the work can be undertaken in-house.

Citizen of the Year 2022
During the Mayor’s Breakfast
on Saturday, March 19,
Julie Beddingfield
was named Haddonfield’s
Citizen of the Year for 2022.
After moving to Haddonfield in 2006, Julie
Beddingfield put the knowledge and experience
she gained as an environmental and land-use
lawyer to use, for the benefit of our community,
as a member (2009-16) and chair (2012-16) of
the Haddonfield Environmental Commission. A
variety of new projects led to the formation of
Sustainable Haddonfield, which Julie also served on (2010-18) and chaired (2010-16).
She oversaw the work necessary to attain silver-level certification from Sustainable
Jersey and receive a $10,000 grant to develop a Green Building and Sustainability
Element for Haddonfield’s Master Plan. Additional projects included a municipal energy
audit, the addition of bicycle lanes to a portion of Grove Street, and a multi-faceted
water conservation education campaign. In recognition of her work, Julie was named
Sustainable Jersey’s first Sustainability Hero in 2014.
Julie has been a member of the Haddonfield Civic Association’s board of governors
since 2012 and has served as the Association’s treasurer since 2016.
As the owner of Inkwood Books since 2015, Julie has used her store and social media
presence as a platform for a diversity of ideas and perspectives. The store supports
numerous literacy initiatives in Haddonfield and throughout the region. During the
early days of the Covid-19 pandemic – the outbreak of which coincided with her
decision to move to larger premises – she inspired other Haddonfield business owners
with her ability to pivot, adapt, and find creative solutions to the many challenges and
obstacles that the pandemic placed before the owners of small businesses.
The author of one of the letters submitted in support of Julie’s nomination wrote: “In
all of these ways and so many more, Julie truly embodies the best of Haddonfield. She
understands that Haddonfield is a stronger community when we work together, listen
to each other and support those who need help. And her contributions to our town have
made it a more sustainable and more welcoming place to live.”
MADELINE CASH receives the
William G. Hansen Youth of the Year
Award for 2022.
The president of the Leo Club at Memorial High School,
Maddie has organized numerous activities to raise money
and help people in the community, while providing volunteer
opportunities for more than 300 Leos in the school.
Sponsored by the Haddonfield Area Lions Club, the Mayor’s Breakfast
is held annually in the Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Citizen of the Year Award.

Tech help for seniors
Beginning in April – on the first and third Tuesdays – Public Library staff
will be at the Mabel Kay Senior Center from 11am to 12n to help seniors tackle
technology challenges. Interested seniors may sign-up for one-on-one, half-hour
sessions (four sessions per day) here: surveymonkey.com/r/youngerseniors or
scan the QR code n in the margin.
When you sign up, you will be asked to describe the kind of help you need
and specify the device you use (cell phone, tablet, laptop, for example), so the
instructors can be better prepared to answer your questions.
To scan the QR code, open the camera on your phone and aim the camera at

Last Man’s Dinner: April 5
On April 22, 1940, during a gathering to celebrate
the 21st anniversary of the formation of Haddonfield
American Legion Post 38, 108 veterans of the Great
War organized themselves into a Last Man’s Club.
They identified four purposes:
• To preserve our memories of 1917-18
• To pay fitting tribute to our departed comrades
• To foster and perpetuate good comradeship
• To eat drink and be merry.
The charter called for “a bottle of rare brandy ...
to remain unopened until our ranks have thinned to
the last three men,” at which time “the bottle shall
be opened and a toast offered to those comrades
who have gone before.”
The 81st Last Man’s Dinner will be held at the
Tavistock Country Club on Tue Apr 5, at 6pm
(social hour) and 7pm (dinner). All are welcome.
The event honors local veterans of all American
wars, in particular those who are members of the
various “Last Man” clubs established by Post 38 in
the wake of various conflicts.
Three members of the World War II Last Man’s
Club remain: Don Beck, John Brownwell, and Tom
Reilly.
Tickets are $50 and include valet parking. To
purchase tickets, call David Tarditi at 609-437-6347
or email drtarditi@verizon.net. (On the double!)

The Revolution: Hear all about it
The Haddonfield Skirmish Committee is
partnering with Camden County College to present
a series of lectures about the American Revolution,
from the perspective of our communities.
The series is part of the build-up for the Sat Jun 4
Skirmish on Kings Highway.
Doug Rauschenberger will present the second
lecture in the series, “Close to Home: Haddonfield
in the American Revolution,” in the Borough Hall at
7pm on Wed Apr 6,
This talk will cover the military history of the
Haddonfield area during the American Revolution.
It will include Von Donop’s stay on his way to Red
Bank, and the British route through Haddonfield
on the way back to New York. It will also touch on
the role of the Quaker Meeting, and how divisive
the war was for the local community. (A number
of people were “read out” of the Meeting for
participation in the war.)
Doug Rauschenberger has a BA in history and
an MS in library science. He is co-historian of
Haddonfield, a former director of the Public Library,
and a former president of the Historical Society of
Haddonfield. He is the co-author of Lost Haddonfield
and of Haddonfield: Images of America.
Details about the Skirmish, and the lecture
series in particular, may be found here n, or on the
website of the Friends of the Indian King Tavern

or pots. And it seems
that they bloom forever!
“Welcome the warm
weather with a bit of
color in your life, and
buy some fabulous

That’s the message
from members of The
Haddon Fortnightly,
whose geranium sale is
blooming once again.
Untouched by inflation,
prices remain the same
as last year’s.
Available colors are
red, white, pink, and
rose. Sizes are 4.5-inch
pot for $5, 8-inch
hanging basket for $12,
and 10-inch hanging
basket for $16.
To order flowers, or
if you have questions,
call Pat at 856-429-9123.
Make checks payable to

Celebrating Charles Sayre
The life of The Rev Dr Charles A. Sayre, who passed away in August 2020, a
few months after his 100th birthday, will be celebrated at the United Methodist
Church on Sat Apr 9, starting at 11am.
Dr Sayre served as the senior pastor for the church for 25 years, from 1965 to

and served as chair of its board of directors for decades.
Dr Sayre was an active member of the Rotary Club of Haddonfield for 55
years, and served as its president in 1983-84. Rotary District 7640 recognized
his many contributions with its Vocational Service Award in 2009.
The service in the church’s sanctuary will be live-streamed. A reception with
light lunch will follow, in Propert Hall. Those interested in attending are asked

Celebrate with the Symphony: 70!
Symphony in C will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Sun Apr 24 from 5 to
9pm at Tavistock Country Club.
The Symphony was founded as a community orchestra – the Haddonfield
Symphony – in 1952. Over time, its mission evolved into that of a training
orchestra for young professionals and a comprehensive music education
organization serving people of all ages throughout the region.
Symphony in C performs at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts and other
venues, and contributes to the quality of life we enjoy in Greater South Jersey.
The 70th Anniversary Gala will be chaired by Penny and Stephen E. Ryan of
Marlton and Rosie Hymerling of Haddonfield. Emcee will be former Haddonfield
mayor and Symphony in C board chair, Jack Tarditi.
Guests will enjoy cocktails, gourmet dinner with wine, and entertainment by
pianist David Zipse and the Elegance Electric String Quartet. Tavistock Country
Club’s Covid protocols in effect at the time of the event will be observed.
The gala will honor Charles (Chuck) Heuisler and C. Carney (Chick) Savery,
both of whom were instrumental in guiding the former Haddonfield Symphony
from community orchestra to the music education powerhouse it is today.
The event will also remember former board chairs and Archer Law attorneys
Robert R. Kugler and Lee Hymerling, who passed away in 2021.
Proceeds from the gala will support the Symphony’s Summer Camp, Youth
Orchestra, concerts for young people, and after-school instrumental music
programs in Camden and the region.
For Gala reservations and information, including details of sponsorship
opportunities, call Denise Stuart, vice president of development, at
856-240-1503 or email her at dstuart@symphonyinc.org.
Symphony in C is a New Jersey 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so direct
donations are tax-deductible, as are substantial portions of ticket costs and
sponsorships for the gala.

Leaves, yard waste, and “stuff”
April is Clean-Out Month in Haddonfield, which
means that the Borough relaxes the rules with
respect to the amount of “stuff” that can be placed
for pick-up on trash day. Details: Scan the QR n.
After a hiatus of some weeks during which Public
Works Department crews were fully occupied
taking down 150+ trees, the chipper will return
during the weeks of Mon Apr 4 and Mon Apr 18.
Leaves can be raked to the curb – but NOT in the
street! – the weeks of Mon Apr 11 and Mon Apr 25.
Vegetative waste pick-up will resume on trash
days from Mon Apr 4.
